Analytische Herleitung von Anforderungen an den Luftschallschutz zwischen Räumen

Schall; Technische Regelwerke; sound protection and acoustics; technical recommendations Abstract Vor dem Hintergrund der Auseinandersetzungen um die Höhe des Schallschutzes der zurzeit überarbeiteten DIN 4109 "Schallschutz im Hochbau" befasst sich der Autor kritisch mit der bisherigen Art der Festlegung bauakustischer Anforderungen. In Anbetracht der fehlenden physikalischen Legitimation dieser Anforderungen , früher an die Schalldämmwerte, jetzt an die Schallschutzwerte , schlägt der Verfasser die gezielte Berechnung der nachhallzeitbezogenen Schallschutzanforderungen vor, und zwar auf der Basis allgemein bekannter Ausgangsdaten, wie z. B. der Schallleistung der einzelnen Quellen, der Verdeckung durch den Grundpegel etc. Das Verfahren wird ausführlich erläutert und beispielhaft erklärt. Für die Abstufungen Mindestschallschutz, erhöhter Schallschutz, hoher Schallschutz werden Basiswerte vorgeschlagen, die dann in die gezielte Bestimmung der Anforderungsgrößen einfließen. Analytical derivation of requirements for airborne sound insulation between rooms. Against the background of the debate about sound protection levels in the current revision of DIN 4109 "Sound insulation in buildings" the author critically examines the existing methodology for determining acoustic requirements. In view of the lack of physical legitimation of these requirements , previously sound insulation values, now sound protection values , the author proposes targeted calculation of reverberation-related sound protection requirements based on generally known basic data, including the sound power levels of individual sources, masking through background noise, etc. The technique is explained in detail and illustrated by means of examples. Basic values are proposed for minimum sound protection, increased sound protection and high sound protection, which are then used for determining the requirements for individual parameters. The Relationship Between Item Exposure and Test Overlap in Computerized Adaptive Testing

The purpose of this article is to present an analytical derivation for the mathematical form of an average between-test overlap index as a function of the item exposure index, for fixed-length computerized adaptive tests (CATs). This algebraic relationship is used to investigate the simultaneous control of item exposure at both the item and test levels. The results indicate that, in fixed-length CATs, control of the average between-test overlap is achieved via the mean and variance of the item exposure rates of the items that constitute the CAT item pool. The mean of the item exposure rates is easily manipulated. Control over the variance of the item exposure rates can be achieved via the maximum item exposure rate (rmax). Therefore, item exposure control methods which implement a specification of rmax (e.g., Sympson & Hetter, 1985) provide the most direct control at both the item and test levels. [source]


Optimal Stabilization Policy in the Presence of Learning by Doing

This paper analyses the optimal stabilization policy when growth is driven by learning by doing. If benefits of learning by doing are not fully internalized, the optimal policy is to tax labor during expansions and to subsidize it during recessions. The long-term impact of this policy depends critically on initial conditions: If stabilization starts during an expansion, it has a positive effect on long-term production. When stabilization starts during a recession, its long-term effect is negative. The paper makes a methodological contribution in its analytical derivation of the optimal policy along the transition path as well as in the steady state. [source]


Transformations and seasonal adjustment

Abstract., We address the problem of seasonal adjustment of a nonlinear transformation of the original time series, measured on a ratio scale, which aims at enforcing two essential features: additivity and orthogonality of the components. The posterior mean and variance of the seasonally adjusted series admit an analytic finite representation only for particular values of the transformation parameter, e.g. for a fractional Box,Cox transformation parameter. Even if available, the analytical derivation can be tedious and difficult. As an alternative we propose to compute the two conditional moments of the seasonally adjusted series by means of numerical and Monte Carlo integration. The former is both fast and reliable in univariate applications. The latter uses the algorithm known as the ,simulation smoother' and it is most useful in multivariate applications. We present two case studies dealing with robust seasonal adjustment under the square root and the fourth root transformation. Our overall conclusion is that robust seasonal adjustment under transformations is feasible from the computational standpoint and that the possibility of transforming the scale ought to be considered as a further option for improving the quality of seasonal adjustment. Development and validation of a metallic haunch seismic retrofit solution for existing under-designed RC frame buildings

Abstract The feasibility and efficiency of a seismic retrofit solution for existing reinforced concrete frame systems, designed before the introduction of modern seismic-oriented design codes in the mid 1970s, is conceptually presented and experimentally investigated. A diagonal metallic haunch system is introduced at the beam,column connections to protect the joint panel zone from extensive damage and brittle shear mechanisms, while inverting the hierarchy of strength within the beam,column subassemblies and forming a plastic hinge in the beam. A complete step-by-step design procedure is suggested for the proposed retrofit strategy to achieve the desired reversal of strength hierarchy. Analytical formulations of the internal force flow at the beam,column-joint level are derived for the retrofitted joints. The study is particularly focused on exterior beam,column joints, since it is recognized that they are the most vulnerable, due to their lack of a reliable joint shear transfer mechanism. Results from an experimental program carried out to validate the concept and the design procedure are also presented. The program consisted of quasi-static cyclic tests on four exterior, , scaled, beam,column joint subassemblies, typical of pre-1970 construction practice using plain round bars with end-hooks, with limited joint transverse reinforcement and detailed without capacity design considerations. The first (control specimen) emulated the as-built connection while the three others incorporated the proposed retrofitted configurations. The experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed solution for upgrading non-seismically designed RC frames and also confirmed the applicability of the proposed design procedure and of the analytical derivations. Quantitative trait association in parent offspring trios: Extension of case/pseudocontrol method and comparison of prospective and retrospective approaches

Abstract The case/pseudocontrol method provides a convenient framework for family-based association analysis of case-parent trios, incorporating several previously proposed methods such as the transmission/disequilibrium test and log-linear modelling of parent-of-origin effects. The method allows genotype and haplotype analysis at an arbitrary number of linked and unlinked multiallelic loci, as well as modelling of more complex effects such as epistasis, parent-of-origin effects, maternal genotype and mother-child interaction effects, and gene-environment interactions. Here we extend the method for analysis of quantitative as opposed to dichotomous (e.g. disease) traits. The resulting method can be thought of as a retrospective approach, modelling genotype given trait value, in contrast to prospective approaches that model trait given genotype. Through simulations and analytical derivations, we examine the power and properties of our proposed approach, and compare it to several previously proposed single-locus methods for quantitative trait association analysis. We investigate the performance of the different methods when extended to allow analysis of haplotype, maternal genotype and parent-of-origin effects. With randomly ascertained families, with or without population stratification, the prospective approach (modeling trait value given genotype) is found to be generally most effective, although the retrospective approach has some advantages with regard to estimation and interpretability of parameter estimates when applied to selected samples. Light,matter interaction in finite-size plasma systems

Abstract It is well known that electromagnetic waves with frequencies below the plasma frequency cannot propagate inside an electron plasma. For plasmas with infinite extensions, this property can be mathematically described by a Bogoliubov transformation of the photonic operators. More generally, the presence of finite-size electron plasmas such as laser-induced atmospheric light strings or metallic nano structures including metamaterials leads to a modification of the light,matter interaction. It is shown how this geometric property can be fully accounted for with the help of adapted mode functions used for the quantization of the electromagnetic field. In addition to the analytical derivations, numerical results for luminescence spectra out of quasi-two-dimensional, planar plasma sheets are presented. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
