Selected AbstractsDevelopment of Mathematics Interest in Adolescence: Influences of Gender, Family, and School ContextJOURNAL OF RESEARCH ON ADOLESCENCE, Issue 2 2010Anne C. Frenzel This study investigated adolescents' developmental trajectories of mathematics interest and explored related effects of gender, family, and school context. Latent growth curve modeling was used to analyze longitudinal data of N=3,193 students (51% female) from grades 5 to 9 from all 3 ability tracks of the German state school system. Annual assessments involved student questionnaires on interest in mathematics, perceptions of classroom characteristics (classroom values for mathematics, mathematics teacher enthusiasm), as well as parent questionnaires regarding family values for mathematics. Results indicated a downward trend of students' mathematics interest that plateaued in later years, with high variability in mean levels, but little variability in the shape of the growth trajectories. Boys reported higher mathematics interest than girls, but similar downward growth trajectories. Students from the lowest ability track showed more favorable interest trajectories than students from the middle and highest tracks. Family values and classroom characteristics were positively related to within-person levels of interest over time and to average individual levels of interest, but not to growth parameters. HENDRY Abstract, Over recent years the rod and net catch of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., on the River Tamar in south-west England has decreased markedly, resulting in a consistent failure to meet the minimum egg deposition target (conservation limit). Compliance with the target is by annual assessment using rod catch as the major input variable. Further analysis suggested a disproportionate deterioration in the rod fishery performance of the Tamar compared with rivers locally, regionally and nationally. A concomitant decrease in rod licence sales and fishing effort, above both national and regional trends was also evident. However, examination of juvenile electric fishing and adult fish counter data revealed a different trend for the past 10 years, indicating a stable fish population, albeit at a lower level of abundance than previously. The analyses suggested that without consideration of changes in effort and rod exploitation rate, rod catch alone is not a reliable indicator of stock abundance and hence should not be used as such in stock assessment. [source] Predictors of severity of behavioral disturbance among community-dwelling elderly individuals with Alzheimer's disease: A 6-year follow-up studyPSYCHIATRY AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCES, Issue 6 2000Takashi Asada MD Abstract To clarify which baseline factors, including apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotyping and caregiver characteristics, predict the future severity of behavioral disturbance among community-dwelling elderly with Alzheimer's disease (AD), we conducted a longitudinal study for up to 6 years. Fourteen kinds of behavioral disturbance were evaluated. Analyses using data from 62 subjects with at least three annual assessments revealed that the baseline severity of behavioral disturbance was the strongest predictor of future severity, followed by baseline stage of dementia or use of support services. However, ApoE ,4 had only a marginal effect at most. The behavioral disturbances examined in the present study appear to be innately determined phenomena rather than merely representing stages of AD. [source] Longitudinal study of airway dimensions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using computed tomographyRESPIROLOGY, Issue 3 2008Tadashi OHARA Background and objective: Chest CT has been widely used for the evaluation of structural changes in lung parenchyma and airways in cross-sectional studies. There has been no report on the annual changes in airway dimensions as assessed by CT in COPD patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the annual changes in airway dimensions and lung attenuation using CT in patients with COPD and to evaluate the correlations among annual changes in CT measurements and pulmonary function. Methods: Eighty-three men with COPD had completed five annual assessments of CT scans and pulmonary function tests over 4 years. Airway dimensions of the basal segment bronchi and lung attenuation on CT images were analysed in 38 subjects in whom the same airway could be measured at least three times, including at entry and at the end of the study. Results: Mean annual decline in FEV1 was 21 mL/year. Annual changes in the percentage of low attenuation areas were not significantly correlated with decline in FEV1. On the other hand, annual changes in the percentage of wall area (WA%/year) were significantly inversely correlated with annual changes in FEV1 (r = ,0.363, P = 0.025), whereas WA%/year did not differ among severity stages at entry and did not correlate with baseline FEV1. Conclusions: The results showing that annual changes in airway thickening correlated with annual decline in air flow limitation suggests the importance of treatment of airway inflammation in COPD. CT is a useful tool for quantitative estimation not only of emphysema but also of airway lesions in longitudinal studies. [source] |
