Are there correlates of male Australian Magpie Gymnorhina tibicen reproductive success in a population with high rates of extra-group paternity?

The reproductive success of a male bird is often correlated with measurable traits that predict his intrinsic quality. Females are thought to base their selection of mates on the latter's ,quality' in order to gain their ,good genes'. Male Australian Magpies Gymnorhina tibicen of the white-backed race tyrannica were trapped in two breeding seasons. Measurements were taken of morphometric and other characteristics in order to discover whether particular traits of males were associated with: (1) percentage of offspring sired in the territory, (2) number of fledglings produced in the territory per season and (3) whether females select males for their ,good genes'. There were no consistently significant correlations between any of the measured variables and male Magpie reproductive success within territories. In particular, none of the traits measured had any consistent correlation with the percentage of offspring sired in a territorial group. This was an unexpected result given that the species is strongly territorial but also engages regularly in extra-group copulations. These findings appear contrary to the predictions of the ,good genes' hypothesis. The general lack of correlation between the variables and level of genetic paternity may in fact be due to females engaging in extra-group mating primarily to avoid breeding with a close relative rather than to choose a high-quality male. In this case, males would not have to be ,high quality', but merely genetically different from the female's social mate. [source]


Mate choice in Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca: can females use song to find high-quality males and territories?

High-quality male Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca (defined by brighter plumage, better condition and more experience) have previously been shown to have larger syllable repertoires and greater song versatility than males of inferior quality. Thus, by preferring more complex songs, females could choose a high-quality male. Females may also use song as a cue to find a high-quality territory since early arriving males may obtain the best territories and these males have more complex songs than late-arriving males. We found that males with more complex songs had a greater chance of becoming paired and stayed unpaired for a shorter period than males with less elaborate songs. When controlling for arrival order, however, only strophe versatility was still correlated with pairing order. Males defending popular territories had more complex and longer songs and were also in better body condition than males in less popular territories. A multiple logistic regression showed that song length was important in explaining whether a male defended a popular nestbox or not. Thus, male arrival time seems to be important in deciding the quality of a male's territory, which in turn explains female choice. However, song quality seems to add important information. Thus, females could find both high-quality males and high-quality territories by using song cues during mate choice. [source]


Mating Effort and Cryptic Sperm Choice in Scorpionflies: Male Investment Strategy vs.

In this study, we examined which sex controls sperm transfer during copulation in scorpionflies. Therefore male scorpionflies were doubly mated to females of high and low fecundity to explore whether they allocate sperm according to female quality. While mating order had no effect males transferred sperm at higher rates when mating with low-quality instead of high-quality females. As there is no obvious benefit from providing low-fecundity females with more sperm, we suggest a condition-dependent female ability to counteract sperm transfer. Therefore, we disabled females at the beginning of copulations using the insecticide Propoxur which leads to total paralysis caused by tremors. While the provoked muscle contractions led to significantly smaller numbers of sperm transferred, Propoxur treatment had no effect on males. We suggest female counteracting of sperm transfer to be adaptive by decreasing the relative amount of sperm transferred by low-quality males and increasing the proportion of offspring sired by high-quality males. Within- and between-year variation in the juvenile survival of Common Guillemots Uria aalge

We studied juvenile survival of 20 cohorts of Common Guillemot Uria aalge chicks colour-ringed on the Isle of May, Scotland, using both live observations at the colony and dead recoveries, allowing estimation of fidelity to the colony as well as survival. In this seabird, chicks leave the colony when only partly grown and are cared for by the male parent for several weeks afterwards. First-year survival varied strongly between cohorts, with a mean of 56% (range 30,91%). We did not identify any covariates which could explain this variation, whether relating to climate, population size or prey density. Survival was low during two regime shift episodes in the North Sea (1987,90 and 2000 onwards). Early hatched chicks were substantially more likely to survive than those hatching later in most years, whereas body condition at ringing had no detectable effect. Ringing recoveries indicated that mortality was highest in mid-winter, i.e. well after the cessation of paternal care. These results do not support the hypothesis that variation in prey quantity or energy content before fledging is a primary driver of variation in juvenile survival. Rather, it seems that chicks of high-quality parents are more likely to survive, as high-quality females tend to lay earlier in the season, and high-quality males presumably are better able to prepare their chicks to survive their first winter at sea. Very few (4%) Guillemots emigrated permanently before age 3 years, but from age 5 onwards 25,30% of birds annually left the colony or otherwise became unobservable. [source]
