Selected AbstractsDrying-induced surface roughening of polymeric coating under periodic air blowingAICHE JOURNAL, Issue 7 2009Masato Yamamura Abstract We carried out numerical simulations of drying-induced surface roughening of a moving liquid layer under periodic air blowing conditions. Using spatially non-uniform Biot number profiles along the coating surface, the solutions of coupled diffusion/heat transfer equations reveal a periodic growth and relaxation in concentration gradients in the vicinity of the liquid,gas interface. The resultant interfacial stress variations promote particular asymmetric surface topographies that grow and level in a sequential manner. The unique surface roughness is identified by considering time scales required for the web motion, the stress-induced surface evolution, and the pressure-driven leveling. Predicted drying maps represent the surface roughening behavior as regions in parameter space. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009 [source] Analysis of temperature distribution near the crack tip under constant amplitude loadingFATIGUE & FRACTURE OF ENGINEERING MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES, Issue 5 2008K. N. PANDEY ABSTRACT An analytical/numerical method has been developed to find the temperature rise near the crack tip under fatigue loading. The cyclic plastic zone ahead of the crack tip is assumed to be the shape of the source of heat generation and some fraction of plastic work done in cyclic plastic zone as heat generation. Plastic work during fatigue load was found by obtaining stress and strain distribution within the plastic zone by Hutchinson, Rice and Rosengren (HRR) crack tip singularity fields applied to small scale yielding on the cyclic stress strain curve. A two-dimensional conduction heat transfer equation, in moving co-ordinates, was used to obtain temperature distribution around the crack tip. Temperature rise was found to be a function of frequency of loading, applied stress intensity factor and thermal properties of the material. A power,law relation was found between the rise in temperature at a fixed point near the crack tip and range of stress intensity factor. [source] Three-dimensional ultrasound image-guided robotic system for accurate microwave coagulation of malignant liver tumoursTHE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ROBOTICS AND COMPUTER ASSISTED SURGERY, Issue 3 2010Jing Xu Abstract Background The further application of conventional ultrasound (US) image-guided microwave (MW) ablation of liver cancer is often limited by two-dimensional (2D) imaging, inaccurate needle placement and the resulting skill requirement. The three-dimensional (3D) image-guided robotic-assisted system provides an appealing alternative option, enabling the physician to perform consistent, accurate therapy with improved treatment effectiveness. Methods Our robotic system is constructed by integrating an imaging module, a needle-driven robot, a MW thermal field simulation module, and surgical navigation software in a practical and user-friendly manner. The robot executes precise needle placement based on the 3D model reconstructed from freehand-tracked 2D B-scans. A qualitative slice guidance method for fine registration is introduced to reduce the placement error caused by target motion. By incorporating the 3D MW specific absorption rate (SAR) model into the heat transfer equation, the MW thermal field simulation module determines the MW power level and the coagulation time for improved ablation therapy. Two types of wrists are developed for the robot: a ,remote centre of motion' (RCM) wrist and a non-RCM wrist, which is preferred in real applications. Results The needle placement accuracies were < 3 mm for both wrists in the mechanical phantom experiment. The target accuracy for the robot with the RCM wrist was improved to 1.6 ± 1.0 mm when real-time 2D US feedback was used in the artificial-tissue phantom experiment. By using the slice guidance method, the robot with the non-RCM wrist achieved accuracy of 1.8 ± 0.9 mm in the ex vivo experiment; even target motion was introduced. In the thermal field experiment, a 5.6% relative mean error was observed between the experimental coagulated neurosis volume and the simulation result. Conclusion The proposed robotic system holds promise to enhance the clinical performance of percutaneous MW ablation of malignant liver tumours. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Optimal boundary control of glass cooling processesMATHEMATICAL METHODS IN THE APPLIED SCIENCES, Issue 11 2004René Pinnau Abstract In this paper, an optimal control problem for glass cooling processes is studied. We model glass cooling using the SP1 approximations to the radiative heat transfer equations. The control variable is the temperature at the boundary of the domain. This results in a boundary control problem for a parabolic/elliptic system which is treated by a constrained optimization approach. We consider several cost functionals of tracking-type and formally derive the first-order optimality system. Several numerical methods based on the adjoint variables are investigated. [source] Operation of an industrial steam reformer under severe condition: A simulation studyTHE CANADIAN JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, Issue 4 2008J. Shayegan Abstract A rigorous two-dimensional model is developed for simulating the operation of a less-investigated type steam reformer having a considerably lower operating Reynolds number, higher tube diameter, and non-availability of extra steam in the feed compared with conventional steam reformers. Simulation results show that reasonable predictions can only be achieved when certain correlations for wall to fluid heat transfer equations are applied. In all cases, strong radial temperature gradients inside the reformer tubes have been found. Furthermore, the results show how a certain catalyst loading profile will affect the operation of the reformer. Un modèle bidimensionnel rigoureux est mis au point pour simuler le fonctionnement d'un reformeur à vapeur d'un type qui a été moins étudié, ayant un nombre de Reynolds de fonctionnement bas, un diamètre de tube élevé et une non disponibilité de vapeur excédentaire dans l'alimentation comparativement aux reformeurs de vapeur classiques. Les résultats de simulation montrent que des prédictions raisonnables peuvent être obtenues seulement lorsque certaines corrélations pour les équations de transfert de chaleur de la paroi vers le fluide sont appliquées. Dans tous les cas, de forts gradients de température radiaux dans les tubes de reformeur ont été trouvés. En outre, les résultats montrent comment un certain profil de chargement de catalyseur influe le fonctionnement du reformeur. [source] |
