Selected AbstractsMolecular evidence-based medicineEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL INVESTIGATION, Issue 5 2007Evolution, integration of information in the genomic era Abstract Evidence-based medicine and molecular medicine have both been influential in biomedical research in the last 15 years. Despite following largely parallel routes to date, the goals and principles of evidence-based and molecular medicine are complementary and they should be converging. I define molecular evidence-based medicine as the study of medical information that makes sense of the advances of molecular biological disciplines and where errors and biases are properly appreciated and placed in context. Biomedical measurement capacity improves very rapidly. The exponentially growing mass of hypotheses being tested requires a new approach to both statistical and biological inference. Multidimensional biology requires careful exact replication of research findings, but indirect corroboration is often all that is achieved at best. Besides random error, bias remains a major threat. It is often difficult to separate bias from the spirit of scientific inquiry to force data into coherent and ,significant' biological stories. Transparency and public availability of protocols, data, analyses and results may be crucial to make sense of the complex biology of human disease and avoid being flooded by spurious research findings. Research efforts should be integrated across teams in an open, sharing environment. Most research in the future may be designed, performed, and integrated in the public cyberspace. [source] Island Biocultural Assemblages , The Case of Kinmen IslandGEOGRAFISKA ANNALER SERIES B: HUMAN GEOGRAPHY, Issue 4 2003Huei-Min Tsai ABSTRACT A growing mass of research contributes to our understanding of how biological and cultural diversity are related in complex and important ways. This paper presents an assembling process of biodiversity and cultural diversity on an island, Kin-men (Quemoy), based on 1600 years of its environmental history. The study shows that the island's biocultural assemblages are a result both of external relations with the island's surrounding environment and internal relations within the island's changing human ecology. Distant political powers and economic forces are the two major external influences that have affected the flow of natural and cultural elements to and from the island, while ,screening effects' and ,isolation effects' are two factors that explain internal interactions. The island's biocultural assembling processes reveal that the openness of the island facilitates increase in the diversity of biocultural elements, while its less disturbed isolated condition fosters natural succession and co-evolution. The study suggests that biocultural assemblages and the associated processes of co-evolution and nature,society interactions are accomplished through the intermittent opportunities purposively provided by or inadvertently found in the openings and closures of boundaries, setting the scene for both boundary crossings and bounded shelter, by intent or chance. [source] Tectonic control of erosion and sedimentation in the Amazon Basin of BoliviaHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 22 2009Patrice Baby Abstract The western Amazon drainage basin, which extends from southern Colombia to northern Bolivia, comprises the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes and its adjacent foreland basin system. In northern Bolivia, the orogenic wedge of the eastern Andes is very large, and its forward propagation controls the morphology of the Madeira drainage basin. We consider here the erosion and sedimentation mass balance in this part of the Amazon Basin, estimated on the basis of recent sediment yield data, within the current tectonic and geomorphic framework. The total suspended sediment (TSS) flux exported from the present orogenic wedge of northern Bolivia has been estimated at 500,600 million t year,1. More than 50% of the total sediment load crossing the Madeira foreland basin system is deposited. The rest of the sediments (less than 46%) reaches the eastern Amazon Basin, bypassing the Brazilian craton to the north. The average mass of sediment that has been deposited from the late Miocene to the present in the Madeira foreland basin sedimentation system is less than that intercepted today, by a factor of about 2·4. These results can be interpreted as an increase in Bolivian foreland basin flexural subsidence over time, associated with crust thickening and orogenic loading, and accentuated by the growing mass of retained sediments. They are consistent with the uplift rates of the Cordillera Oriental, obtained from fission-track dating, which began increasing significantly around 10,15 Ma. [source] Hamartoma of the Breast in a Man: First Case ReportTHE BREAST JOURNAL, Issue 4 2001Keyvan Ravakhah MD Abstract: Mammary hamartomas were reported in 0.7% of all benign tumors of the female breast. Histologically breast hamartomas contain lobular breast tissue with various degrees of fibrous, fibrocystic, and adipose tissue. Rare types include muscular (myoid) and cartilage (chondroid) hamartomas. We report a case of muscular hamartoma in a man. A 36-year-old man was admitted to the psychiatric unit with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. The patient complained of a slowly growing mass in his left breast. He denied any discharge from the nipple, but he complained of itching. A 2 cm × 3 cm nontender mass was palpable. There was no evidence of axillary lymphadenopathy. A needle aspiration was nondiagnostic. The excisional biopsy specimen revealed fatty tissue which was edematous and hemorrhagic. Microscopically it showed multiple bundles of muscles organized randomly. Myoid hamartoma was the diagnosis. Mammary hamartoma is considered a female tumor exclusively. Myoid hamartoma has been reported previously in 25 women. We report a myoid hamartoma in a man and, to our knowledge, it is the first and only such case to be reported. [source] A case of perforating pilomatricomaTHE JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 6 2006Harun CIRALIK ABSTRACT Pilomatricoma is a rare skin neoplasm, most commonly seen in the head and neck region, and occurring in the first two decades of life. It is usually solitary and varies from 0.5 to 2 cm in diameter. Its etiology is unknown. Perforating pilomatricoma is a rare clinical variant that presents as a draining, crusted nodule or ulcer, and is reported to arise faster than the classic pilomatricoma. Herein, we report a case of 35-year-old female, who had a 4-month history of a growing mass on her leg. On physical examination, a 4-cm diameter, asymptomatic, erythematous, ulcerated mass was noted on the left anterio-lateral upper leg. The first histopathological analysis of a punch biopsy from the lesion was reported as basal cell carcinoma. Therefore, the lesion was totally excised. There were shadow cells, squamoid cells, and basaloid aggregations more prominently in the one area in the tumor. In addition, calcification, foreign body giant cells and inflammatory cells were present. Punch or excisional biopsies are preferred as a method of diagnosis for the majority of cutaneous neoplasms. If total excision is not the method of choice, multiple punch biopsies should be made from different areas in large skin tumors for correct diagnosis. [source] |
