Enculturated chimpanzees imitate rationally

Human infants imitate others' actions ,rationally': they copy a demonstrator's action when that action is freely chosen, but less when it is forced by some constraint (Gergely, Bekkering & Király, 2002). We investigated whether enculturated chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) also imitate rationally. Using Gergely and colleagues' (2002) basic procedure, a human demonstrator operated each of six apparatuses using an unusual body part (he pressed it with his forehead or foot, or sat on it). In the Hands Free condition he used this unusual means even though his hands were free, suggesting a free choice. In the Hands Occupied condition he used the unusual means only because his hands were occupied, suggesting a constrained or forced choice. Like human infants, chimpanzees imitated the modeled action more often in the Hands Free than in the Hands Occupied condition. Enculturated chimpanzees thus have some understanding of the rationality of others' intentional actions, and use this understanding when imitating others. [source]


PRECLINICAL STUDY: FULL ARTICLE: Ghrelin increases intake of rewarding food in rodents

ABSTRACT We investigated whether ghrelin action at the level of the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a key node in the mesolimbic reward system, is important for the rewarding and motivational aspects of the consumption of rewarding/palatable food. Mice with a disrupted gene encoding the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1A) and rats treated peripherally with a GHS-R1A antagonist both show suppressed intake of rewarding food in a free choice (chow/rewarding food) paradigm. Moreover, accumbal dopamine release induced by rewarding food was absent in GHS-R1A knockout mice. Acute bilateral intra-VTA administration of ghrelin increased 1-hour consumption of rewarding food but not standard chow. In comparison with sham rats, VTA-lesioned rats had normal intracerebroventricular ghrelin-induced chow intake, although both intake of and time spent exploring rewarding food was decreased. Finally, the ability of rewarding food to condition a place preference was suppressed by the GHS-R1A antagonist in rats. Our data support the hypothesis that central ghrelin signaling at the level of the VTA is important for the incentive value of rewarding food. [source]


RESEARCH FOCUS ON COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOUR IN ANIMALS: An animal model of compulsive food-taking behaviour

ABSTRACT The increase in the incidence of obesity and eating disorders has promoted research aimed at understanding the aetiology of abnormal eating behaviours. Apart from metabolic factors, obesity is caused by overeating. Clinical reports have led to the suggestion that some individuals may develop addictive-like behaviours when consuming palatable foods, and compulsive eating plays a similar dominant role in obesity as compulsive drug taking does in drug addiction. The progress made in the development of treatment strategies for obesity is limited, in part, because the physiological and neurological causes and consequences of compulsive eating behaviour are not clearly understood and cannot readily be studied in human subjects. We have developed experimental approaches that reflect the functioning of the components of eating control, including compulsive food taking in rats. Rats that are given free choice between standard chow and a palatable, chocolate-containing ,Cafeteria Diet' (CD) develop distinct signs of compulsive food taking that appear at an early stage. These include the inability to adapt intake behaviour in periods of limited or bitter-tasting CD access, continued food intake during resting phases and changes in fine structure of feeding (duration, distribution and recurrence of feeding bouts). The model will help examine the neurobiological underpinnings of compulsive food seeking and food taking and provides a possibility to study the effects of novel anti-obesity compounds on compulsive eating and other components of food-taking behaviour in detail. For future use of genetic models, the possibility of a transfer to a mouse was discussed. [source]


Pleiotropic effect of a locus on chromosome 4 influencing alcohol drinking and emotional reactivity in rats

A QTL search in a segregating F2 intercross between HEP (High-Ethanol Preferring line) and wistar-kyoto (WKY, a low-alcohol consuming strain) rats identified a locus on chromosome 4 linked to the consumption of a 5% alcohol solution offered as a free choice with water (Terenina-Rigaldie et al. submitted). In order to confirm and analyse the influence of this locus, F2 rats were selected according to their genotype at the markers flanking the QTL and bred in order to obtain two groups of rats homozygous HEP/HEP (,HIGH' line) or WKY/WKY (,LOW' line) at the QTL, the rest of the genome being randomly inherited from one or the other founder strain. These two groups of animals displayed large differences in emotional reactivity (open field, elevated-plus maze), sensitivity to taste reinforcers (saccharin, quinine) and alcohol consumption (either forced or as a free choice with water). These results confirm the influence of this locus on alcohol intake and emotional reactivity traits, and suggest a pleiotropic effect of the gene(s) involved. Elasticities of market shares and social health insurance choice in germany: a dynamic panel data approach

Abstract In 1996, free choice of health insurers was introduced to the German social health insurance system. One objective was to increase efficiency through competition. A crucial precondition for effective competition among health insurers is that consumers search for lower-priced health insurers. We test this hypothesis by estimating the price elasticities of insurers' market shares. We use unique panel data and specify a dynamic panel model to explain changes in market shares. Estimation results suggest that short-run price elasticities are smaller than previously found by other studies. In the long-run, however, estimation results suggest substantial price effects. Regulated competition and citizen participation: lessons from Israel

Objective To investigate the relationship between health system structure and citizen participation, in particular whether increased reliance on competition encourages or depresses citizen involvement. Setting The case of Israel's ongoing health reform, based on regulated competition among sick funds, is examined. Design Interviews with government officials and representatives of consumer groups; analysis of policy documents, judicial rulings, public surveys and journalistic accounts. Results The Israeli reform is based in large measure on a regulated competition model, in which citizens have free choice among highly regulated competing sick funds. At the same time, the reform process has been accompanied by legal, institutional and political frameworks, as well as significant interest group activity, all aimed at increasing public input into processes of health policy making and implementation. The Israeli case, it is argued, lends support to the proposition that citizen participation (voice) and individual choice (exit) are complementary, rather than alternative, modes of ensuring citizen influence over health services. The question is whether the development of multiple avenues for citizen involvement represents disarray or a healthy social learning process regarding the running of the health system. Conclusion This paper expresses cautious optimism that citizen participation is a projection of a healthy social learning process, and suggests directions for public policy to encourage this outcome. The Elements of Rationality and Chance in the Choice of Human Action

The focus in this paper is on deliberate human action. The central questions addressed are: whether purely rational choice is possible; whether choices may be induced by chance alone; or whether there is always a mixture of rationality and chance, as well as other factors such as habit, emotion, imitation and irrationality. The approach is a factualist one, upholding the view that, although human action can be explained by its antecedents, this is not incompatible with the notion of "free choice". It is the actual choosing process that determines the final choice of action. Whatever the sources of the elements involved in the choosing process, the choice of action is a specific outcome created by the acting agent. It is in this choosing process and decision making that both rationality and chance enter. The conclusion is that rationality is the element which links intentionality with goal seeking and attainment, but that the actual choice is determined by a complex interactive process in which both logic and chance play a part. Palatable High-Energy Diet Decreases the Expression of Cannabinoid Type 1 Receptor Messenger RNA in Specific Brain Regions in the Rat

In laboratory rodents, a palatable high-energy diet (PHED) is usually consumed in a higher quantity than a standard laboratory diet, leading to the development of an obese phenotype. The central effects of PHED are not fully understood. Nonetheless, the long-term consumption of PHED can decrease cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) protein density in particular brain regions. However, little is known about the diet-dependent regulation of the brain expression of CB1R mRNA. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the long-term consumption of PHED and short-term (12 h) food deprivation on the brain expression of CB1R mRNA. For 13 weeks, rats were fed a standard laboratory chow or PHED presented as a free choice of chow, shortcake biscuits and pork spread. In total, the food intake of PHED rats was higher than that of chow-fed animals. Expectedly, PHED rats demonstrated higher body weight than chow-fed animals. The difference in body weight between PHED- and chow-fed rats was as result of the fat but not the lean mass. PHED-fed rats had significantly higher plasma levels of leptin and insulin and significantly higher levels of expression of suppressor of cytokine signalling 3 (SOCS-3) in the arcuate hypothalamic nucleus. The long-term consumption of PHED significantly decreased the levels of CB1R mRNA expression in the cingulate (Cg) cortex, ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus and the descending/autonomic divisions of the parvocellular hypothalamic nucleus (PVH), the ventrolateral parvocellular PVH and, to a lesser extent, the dorsomedial parvocellular PVH. Acute food deprivation decreased the levels of CB1R transcript in the Cg and ventrolateral parvocellular PVH. Altogether, the present results demonstrate that long-term PHED leads to an increase in the hypothalamic expression of SOCS-3 mRNA and a decrease in expression of CB1R mRNA in the Cg cortex and specific hypothalamic regions. Birds select conventional over organic wheat when given free choice

Abstract BACKGROUND: Global demand for organic produce is increasing by ,4 billion annually. One key reason why consumers buy organic food is because they consider it to be better for human and animal health. Reviews comparing organic and conventional food have stated that organic food is preferred by birds and mammals in choice tests. RESULTS: This study shows the opposite result,that captive birds in the laboratory and wild garden birds both consumed more conventional than organic wheat when given free choice. There was a lag in preference formation during which time birds learnt to distinguish between the two food types, which is likely to explain why the present results differ from those of previous studies. A further experiment confirmed that, of 16 potential causal factors, detection by birds of consistently higher levels of protein in conventional seeds (a common difference between many organic and conventional foodstuffs) is the likely mechanism behind this pattern. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the current dogma that organic food is preferred to conventional food may not always be true, which is of considerable importance for consumer perceptions of organically grown food. ABSTRACT Informed consent is the practical expression of the doctrine of autonomy. But the very idea of autonomy and conscious free choice is undercut by the view that human beings react as their unconscious brain centres dictate, depending on factors that may or may not be under rational control and reflection. This worry is, however, based on a faulty model of human autonomy and consciousness and needs close neurophilosophical scrutiny. A critique of the ethics implied by the model takes us towards a ,care of the self' view of autonomy and the subject's attunement to the truth as the crux of reasoning rather than the inner mental/neural state views of autonomy and human choice on offer at present. Swedish Women's Interest in Home Birth and In-Hospital Birth Center Care

ABSTRACT:Background: In Sweden, few alternatives to a hospital birth are available, and little is known about consumer interest in alternative birth care. The aim of this study was to determine women's interest in home birth and in-hospital birth center care in Sweden, and to describe the characteristics of these women. Methods: All Swedish-speaking women booked for antenatal care during 3 weeks during 1 year were invited to participate in the study. Three questionnaires, completed after the first booking visit in early pregnancy, at 2 months, and 1 year after the birth, asked about the women's interest in two alternative birth options and a wide range of possible explanatory variables. Results: Consent to participate in the study was given by 3283 women (71% of all women eligible). The rates of response to the three questionnaires were 94, 88, and 88 percent, respectively. One percent of participants consistently expressed an interest in home birth on all three occasions, and 8 percent expressed an interest in birth center care. A regression analysis showed five factors that were associated with an interest in home birth: a wish to have the baby's siblings (OR 20.2; 95% CI 6.2,66.5) and a female friend (OR 15.2; 95% CI 6.2,37.4) present at the birth, not wanting pharmacological pain relief during labor and birth (OR 4.7; 95% CI 1.4,15.3), low level of education (OR 4.5; 95% CI 1.8,11.4), and dissatisfaction with medical aspects of intrapartum care (OR 3.6; 95% CI 1.4,9.2). An interest in birth center care was associated with experience of being in control during labor and birth (OR 8.3; 95% CI 3.2,21.6), not wanting pharmacological pain relief (OR 2.3; 95% CI 1.3,4.1), and a preference to have a known midwife at the birth (OR 2.2; 95% CI 1.6,2.9). Conclusion: If Swedish women were offered free choice of place of birth, the home birth rate would be 10 times higher, and the 20 largest hospitals would need to have a birth center. GENERALIZED QUADRATIC STABILIZATION FOR DISCRETE-TIME SINGULAR SYSTEMS WITH TIME-DELAY AND NONLINEAR PERTURBATION

ABSTRACT This paper discusses a generalized quadratic stabilization problem for a class of discrete-time singular systems with time-delay and nonlinear perturbation (DSSDP), which the satisfies Lipschitz condition. By means of the S-procedure approach, necessary and sufficient conditions are presented via a matrix inequality such that the control system is generalized quadratically stabilizable. An explicit expression of the static state feedback controllers is obtained via some free choices of parameters. It is shown in this paper that generalized quadratic stability also implies exponential stability for linear discrete-time singular systems or more generally, DSSDP. In addition, this new approach for discrete singular systems (DSS) is developed in order to cast the problem as a convex optimization involving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), such that the controller can stabilize the overall system. This approach provides generalized quadratic stabilization for uncertain DSS and also extends the existing robust stabilization results for non-singular discrete systems with perturbation. The approach is illustrated here by means of numerical examples. [source]
