Host behaviour and exposure risk in an insect,pathogen interaction

Summary 1.,Studies of variability in host resistance to disease generally emphasize variability in susceptibility given exposure, neglecting the possibility that hosts may vary in behaviours that affect the risk of exposure. 2.,In many insects, horizontal transmission of baculoviruses occurs when larvae consume foliage contaminated by the cadavers of virus-infected conspecific larvae; so, host behaviour may have a strong effect on the risk of infection. 3.,We studied variability in the behaviour of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larvae, which are able to detect and avoid virus-contaminated foliage. 4.,Our results show that detection ability can be affected by the family line that larvae originate from, even at some distance from a virus-infected cadaver, and suggest that cadaver-detection ability may be heritable. 5.,There is thus the potential for natural selection to act on cadaver-detection ability, and thereby to affect the dynamics of pathogen-driven cycles in gypsy moth populations. 6. Examples for the importance of radiophysical measurements in clinical phototherapy

Summary Background: Optimal UV therapy requires regular surveillance of the variables that influence therapeutic success. In daily practice, phototherapy equipment is often operated with an attitude of "autocontrol." This implies that thorough control measurements of the emission spectra and calibration of UV fluences are not routinely performed. For both quality control and patient safety, it is essential to regularly check whether a UV source is providing the right target spectrum with the correct dose to the skin. Methods: We have exemplarily taken three UV sources currently used in clinical practice and performed radiophysical measurements, i. e. determined emission spectra, radiation output and correctness of dose calculation. Results: All three sources revealed either a largely inhomogeneous distribution pattern of radiation intensity, variation of radiation intensity over time or insufficient filtering of the UV lamp emission spectrum. Furthermore the dose calculation procedures had to be revised because of significant differences between the estimated and the administered UV doses. Conclusions: Radiophysical measurement of all UV-equipment in clinical use is a simple and effective way to improve the safety and reliability of phototherapy. Such measurements help to uncover technical flaws in radiation sources and prevent unnecessary side effects and UV exposure risks for the patient. [source]


Integrated modeling environment for statewide assessment of groundwater vulnerability from pesticide use in agriculture,

Abstract Atrazine, a herbicide widely used for corn production in the Midwest, has been detected in groundwater of several states, and has been identified as a possible human carcinogen. With the widespread use of pesticides in crop production, and the frequent detection of these chemicals in groundwater, large-scale risk assessments would help water resource managers to identify areas that are more susceptible to contamination and implement practices to ameliorate the problem. This paper presents an integrated, visual and interactive system for predicting potential environmental risks associated with pesticide contamination at spatial scales ranging from fields to landscapes and regions. The interactive system extends the predictive ability of the Pesticide Root Zone Model Release 2.0 (PRZM-2) to a landscape and statewide scale through integration with a geographic information system (GIS), graphical user interface and environmental databases. Predictions of statewide (Iowa) vulnerability of groundwater from atrazine leaching below the unsaturated zone were made to demonstrate the utility of the system, and the results were used in risk assessment. In the example application, atrazine fate and transport were evaluated using long-term climatic data (1980,1989) in combination with several environmental databases (eg STATSGO soils database) and exposure risks were expressed in terms of the probability of the predicted pesticide concentrations exceeding the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for drinking water. The results indicate that the predicted pesticide concentrations were significantly lower than the EPA-established MCL. In addition to providing an interactive environment for landscape-level assessment of potential risks from pesticide leaching, the system significantly reduces the time and resources needed to organize and manipulate data for use with PRZM-2, and provides an analytical framework for evaluating groundwater-leaching impacts of pesticide management practices. Occupational blood exposure among unlicensed home care workers and home care registered nurses: Are they protected?

Abstract Background Little is known about the risk of blood exposure among personnel providing care to individual patients residing at home. The objective of this study was to document and compare blood exposure risks among unlicensed home care personal care assistants (PCAs) and home care registered nurses (RNs). Methods PCAs self-completed surveys regarding blood and body fluid (BBF) contact in group settings (n,=,980), while RNs completed mailed surveys (n,=,794). Results PCAs experience BBF contact in the course of providing care for home-based clients at a rate approximately 1/3 the rate experienced by RNs providing home care (8.1 and 26.7 per 100 full time equivalent (FTE), respectively), and the majority of PCA contact episodes did not involve direct sharps handling. However, for PCAs who performed work activities such as handling sharps and changing wound dressings, activities much more frequently performed by RNs, PCAs were at increased risk of injury when compared with RNs (OR,=,7.4 vs. 1.4) and (OR,=,6.3 vs. 2.5), respectively. Conclusion Both PCAs and RNs reported exposures to sharps, blood, and body fluids in the home setting at rates that warrant additional training, prevention, and protection. PCAs appear to be at increased risk of injury when performing nursing-related activities for which they are inexperienced and/or lack training.
