Verification testing in computational fluid dynamics: an example using Reynolds-averaged Navier,Stokes methods for two-dimensional flow in the near wake of a circular cylinder

Abstract Verification testing was performed for various Reynolds-averaged Navier,Stokes methods for uniform flow past a circular cylinder at Re= 5232. The standard and renormalized group (RNG) versions of the k,, method were examined, along with the Boussinesq, Speziale and Launder constitutive relationships. Wind tunnel experiments for flow past a circular cylinder were also performed to obtain a comparative data set. Preliminary studies demonstrate poor convergence for the Speziale relationship. Verification testing with the standard and RNG k,, models suggests that the simulations exhibit global monotonic convergence for the Boussinesq models. However, the global order of accuracy of the methods was much lower than the expected order of accuracy of 2. For this reason, pointwise convergence ratios and orders of accuracy were computed to show that not all sampling locations had converged (standard k,, model: 19% failed to converge; RNG k,, model: 14% failed to converge). When the non-convergent points were removed from consideration, the average orders of accuracy are closer to the expected value (standard k,, model: 1.41; RNG k,, model: 1.27). Poor iterative and global grid convergence was found for the RNG k,,/Launder model. The standard and RNG k,, models with the Boussinesq relationship were compared with experimental data and yielded results significantly different from the experiments. A Domain-level Approach to Describing Growth in Achievement

Descriptions of growth in educational achievement often rely on the notion that higher-level students can do whatever lower-level students can do, plus at least one more thing. This article presents a method of supporting such descriptions using the data of a subject-area achievement test. Multiple content domains with an expected order of difficulty were defined within the Grade 8 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in mathematics. Teachers were able to reliably classify items into the domains by content. Using expected percentage correct scores on the domains, it was possible to describe each achievement level boundary (Basic, Proficient, and Advanced) on the NAEP scale by patterns of skill that include both mastery and non-mastery, and to show that higher achievement levels are associated with mastery of more skills. We conclude that general achievement tests like NAEP can be used to provide criterion-referenced descriptions of growth in achievement as a sequential mastery of skills. [source]


Loss of tocopherols and formation of degradation compounds at frying temperatures in oils differing in degree of unsaturation and natural antioxidant content

Abstract Samples of oils of different degrees of unsaturation, namely palm olein, olive oil, high-linoleic sunflower oil, high-oleic sunflower oil, rapeseed oil and soybean oil, were heated at 180,°C for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10,h in the presence or absence of their natural antioxidants. Also, tocopherol-stripped oils were supplemented with ,-tocopherol (500,mg,kg,1), ,-tocopherol (500,mg,kg,1) or a mixture of ,-, ,-, ,- and ,-tocopherols (250,mg,kg,1 each) and heated under the same conditions. Losses of tocopherols and formation of polymeric triacylglycerols were followed. Total polar compounds were also evaluated after 10,h of heating. Results demonstrated that tocopherols were lost very rapidly, in the expected order, with ,-tocopherol being the least stable. Polymeric and polar compound formation during heating was inhibited to a variable extent, being more dependent on the natural content and type of tocopherols than on the degree of unsaturation of the oil. For example, polymeric and polar compound contents in soybean oil were significantly lower than those found in high-linoleic sunflower oil. However, the expected influence of the degree of unsaturation was evident when oils were unprotected or possessed identical initial antioxidant contents. Finally, levels of degradation compounds after 10,h of heating were not dependent on the remaining content of antioxidants. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry [source]


Positron Annihilation Lifetimes in Cucurbiturils: Evidence of Internal Inclusion of Gold in CB[7]

Abstract Positron lifetime spectroscopy serves to determine the void volumes of cucurbituril (CB) capsules, which are not amenable to standard gas adsorption methods. In the case of the host,guest complex Au§CB[7], it also provides evidence of the inclusion of gold nanoparticles in the CB cavity (see space-filling model; Au golden, C gray, H cyan, N blue, O red). Positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) measurements are carried out to determine the cavity dimensions of hydrated and dehydrated cucurbiturils (CB[n]; n=5,6,7,8). In the case of hydrated samples, the dimensions of the cavity are unrelated to the number of glycoluril units of the CB, whereas for dehydrated samples the cavity dimensions measured by PAL follow the expected order, although the experimental values obtained by PAL are significantly smaller than the dimensions of each CB determined by crystallography. For a host,guest complex in which colloidal gold nanoparticles are assumed to be included inside CB[7], a significant reduction of the cavity size is measured. This represents an experimental evidence of the inclusion of gold inside CB[7], which complements previous high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. [source]
