Selected AbstractsA Randomized, Bilateral, Prospective Comparison of Calcium Hydroxylapatite Microspheres versus Human-Based Collagen for the Correction of Nasolabial FoldsDERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 2007STACY SMITH MD BACKGROUND Current soft tissue fillers are a compromise between ease of use, duration of correction, reactivity, and cost. A product utilizing calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is currently being used as a soft tissue filler. OBJECTIVE The objective was to compare the efficacy and safety of CaHA microspheres versus human-based collagen for the correction of nasolabial folds. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four centers enrolled 117 subjects with moderate to deep nasolabial folds. Subjects received CaHA on one side of the face and human collagen on the other. Up to two touch-ups were allowed. A blinded panel of experts evaluated subject photographs from initial and follow-up visits. RESULTS Seventy-nine percent of subjects had superior improvement on the CaHA side through 6 months (p<.0001). For optimal correction, significantly less volume and fewer injections were needed for CaHA than for collagen (p<.0001). Adverse event rates were comparable, with some increase in bruising and edema for CaHA-treated sides. Adverse event duration was similar for both groups and generally resolved within 14 to 21 days. CONCLUSION This CaHA-based product gives significantly longer-lasting correction of nasolabial folds compared to human collagen. Less total material and fewer injections are required. The adverse event profile of the product is similar to the collagen-based product. [source] Validation of diagnostic criteria for sleep bruxismJOURNAL OF ORAL REHABILITATION, Issue 9 2002K. BABA Several diagnostic criteria for bruxism can be taken from the literature; however, most of them have never been validated. This study examined whether predictor variables taken from physical examinations and questionnaires were related to the actual bruxism levels. Fifty dental students agreed to participate in this study and eight examination variables and seven questionnaire variables were collected from them. The subjects measured their nocturnal EMG activity from the right masseter muscle for six consecutive nights in their home by means of a portable EMG device. Off-line analysis was performed on data from second to sixth nights. By using a custom made software, all EMG activity elevations above a minimum threshold of 50% of each subject's individually established maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) level were quantified with regard to the duration and number of elevations and then three outcome variables, which were event number per hour (number/h), event duration per hour (duration h,1), and duration per event (duration/event), were calculated. A multiple stepwise regression (MSR) analysis was conducted to assess the 15 predictor variables and the three outcome variables. These MSR analyses revealed that the joint sound score remained in the regression equation as a predictor (n=50, P < 0·05) of the likelihood that a subject would exhibit longer bruxism events (duration h,1and number h,1). It must be noted that the self-awareness and tooth attrition status were found not to be strong predictors and even for the above variable where significant association was found, the likelihood ratio between the variable and predicted outcomes was not robust. [source] PRECIPITATION CHANGES FROM 1956 TO 1996 ON THE WALNUT GULCH EXPERIMENTAL WATERSHED,JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN WATER RESOURCES ASSOCIATION, Issue 1 2002Mary H. Nichols ABSTRACT: The climate of Southern Arizona is dominated by summer precipitation, which accounts for over 60 percent of the annual total. Summer and non-summer precipitation data from the USDA-ARS Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed are analyzed to identify trends in precipitation characteristics from 1956 to 1996. During this period, annual precipitation increased. The annual precipitation increase can be attributed to an increase in precipitation during non-summer months, and is paralleled by an increase in the proportion of annual precipitation contributed during non-summer months. This finding is consistent with previously reported increases in non-summer precipitation in the southwestern United States. Detailed event data were analyzed to provide insight into the characteristics of precipitation events during this time period. Precipitation event data were characterized based on the number of events, event precipitation amount, 30-minute event intensity, and event duration. The trend in non-summer precipitation appears to be a result of increased event frequency since the number of events increased during nonsummer months, although the average amount per event, average event intensity, and average event duration did not. During the summer "monsoon" season, the frequency of recorded precipitation events increased but the average precipitation amount per event decreased. Knowledge of precipitation trends and the characteristics of events that make up a precipitation time series is a critical first step in understanding and managing water resources in semiarid ecosystems. Skaggs Abstract Relationships between farm size, irrigation practices, and on-farm irrigation efficiency in the Elephant Butte Irrigation District, New Mexico, USA are explored using 2001 water delivery data supplied by the irrigation district. The study area is experiencing rapid population growth, development, and competition for existing water supplies. It is conventionally assumed that in the future water will be transferred from agriculture to other uses. Analysis of pecan orchard water delivery data, fieldwork, and interviews with irrigators found extremely long irrigation durations, inefficient irrigation practices, inadequate on-farm infrastructure, and lack of interest in making improvements to the current irrigation system or methods on the smallest farms. These findings are attributed to the nature of residential/lifestyle or retirement agriculture. Irrigation practices on large, commercial orchards are notably different from the smallest farms: irrigation event durations are shorter, less water is applied, and the producers are commercially oriented. With respect to future increases in the efficiency of irrigation water usage, large, commercially oriented producers already have a high level of physical efficiency. Small producers appear to view irrigation as a consumptive, recreational, social, or lifestyle activity, rather than an income-generating pursuit, thus the cost of inducing changes in their practices may be extremely high.
