Comparative life-history traits in a fig wasp community: implications for community structure

1. Whether life-history traits can determine community composition and structure is an important question that has been well explored theoretically, but has received scant empirical attention. Life-history traits of a seven-member community of galler and parasitoid fig wasp species (Chalcidoidea), developing within the inflorescences (syconia) of Ficus racemosa (Moraceae) in India, were determined and used to examine community structure and ecology. 2. Gallers were pro-ovigenic (all eggs are mature upon adult emergence) whereas parasitoids were synovigenic (eggs mature progressively during adult lifespan). Initial egg load was correlated with body size for some species, and there was a trade-off between egg number and egg size across all species. Although all species completed their development and left the syconium concurrently, they differed in their adult and pre-adult lifespans. Providing sucrose solutions increased parasitoid lifespan but had no effect on the longevity of some galler species. While feeding regimes and body size affected longevity in most species, an interaction effect between these variables was detected for only one species. 3. Life-history traits of wasp species exhibited a continuum in relation to their arrival sequence at syconia for oviposition during syconium development, and therefore reflected their ecology. The largest number of eggs, smallest egg sizes, and shortest longevities were characteristic of the earliest-arriving galling wasps at the smallest, immature syconia; the converse characterised the later-arriving parasitoids at the larger, already parasitised syconia. Thus life history is an important correlate of community resource partitioning and can be used to understand community structure. 4. This is the first comprehensive study of life-history traits in a fig wasp community. The comparative approach revealed constraints and flexibility in trait evolution. [source]


The relationship between host selection behaviour and offspring fitness in a koinobiont parasitoid

Summary 1. When host quality varies, optimal foraging theory assumes that parasitic wasps select hosts in a manner that increases their individual fitness. In koinobiont parasitoids, where the hosts continue developing for a certain period of time after parasitisation, host selection may not reflect current host quality but may be based on an assessment of future growth rates and resources available for the developing larvae. 2. When presented with hosts of uniform quality, the koinobiont parasitoid Leptomastix dactylopii exhibits a characteristic host-selection behaviour: some hosts are accepted for oviposition on first encounter, while others are rejected several times before an egg is laid in them, a behaviour that is commonly associated with a changing host acceptance threshold during the course of a foraging bout. 3. The fitness of the offspring that emerged from hosts accepted immediately upon encounter was compared with the fitness of offspring emerged from hosts rejected several times before being accepted for oviposition. 4. The pattern of host acceptance and rejection was not related to any of the measured fitness parameters of the offspring emerging from these hosts (development time, size at emergence, sex ratio at emergence, and female offspring egg load). 5. While complex post facto adaptive explanations can be devised to explain the nature of such a time and energy consuming host selection process, it is suggested that physiological constraints on egg production or oviposition may provide an alternative, purely mechanistic, explanation for the results obtained. The effect of travel time on oviposition behavior and spatial egg aggregation: experiments with Drosophila

Abstract A higher degree of spatial egg aggregation is often observed in environments where resource patches are more sparsely distributed. This suggests a higher probability of species coexistence when resource distribution is sparse. However, it is still unclear how the degree of spatial egg aggregation increases. I propose a model to explain this phenomenon, which assumes that (i) egg load (the number of mature eggs in ovaries) increases in the travel period between resource patches and (ii) the retention of eggs in the ovaries is harmful (egg load pressure). With these assumptions, a female would lay accumulated eggs on arrival at a new resource patch, resulting in a higher degree of spatial egg aggregation. Laboratory experiments with three drosophilid species, Drosophila simulans Surtevant, Drosophila auraria Peng, and Drosophila immigrans Sturtevant, support the model. This study provides evidence that host availability affects the spatial egg aggregation via egg load. [source]


Does Host Value Influence Female Aggressiveness, Contest Outcome and Fitness Gain in Parasitoids?

Intraspecific competition for resources is common in animals and may lead to physical contests. Contest outcomes and aggressiveness can be influenced by the resource holding potential of contestants but also by their perception of the resource value (RV). Competitors may assess resource quality directly (real RV) but may also estimate it according to their physiological status and their experience of the habitat quality (subjective RV). In this article, we studied contests between females of the solitary parasitoid Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae Rondani (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) when exploiting simultaneously a host, a Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) pupa. We tested the effect of factors modifying host value on the occurrence of agonistic behaviours, contest outcomes and host exploitation. The factors tested were: the quality of the previous habitat experienced by females, female egg load, host parasitism status and the stage reached by the owner female in her behavioural oviposition sequence. Females successfully protected their host against intruders during its exploitation, but not after oviposition, and their aggressiveness did not seem to be influenced by their perception of the RV. The fact that the host is subsequently parasitized by the opponent females appears to mainly depend on the host selectiveness of females. [source]


Investment in Mate Guarding May Compensate for Constraints on Ejaculate Production in the Cricket Gryllodes sigillatus

Although there is a corpus of evidence that females of many taxa are choosy about males, there is less information on how males may react to females of different ,quality' (i.e. potential fecundity). The cricket Gryllodes sigillatus shows distinct mate guarding behaviour. We examined how long males mate guard females of different sizes (reflecting egg load and potential fecundity). We also examined the sperm number in ampullae donated to females of different sizes to see if males make a concomitant difference in investment in ejaculate. We also examined mate-guarding behaviour and ejaculate size of males mated to virgin and nonvirgin females of the same size to see if males equate size with increased age and increased likelihood of mating (increased sperm competition). The results showed that males mate guard larger females for longer but make no difference in ejaculate investment between sizes of female. Males make no significant difference in mate guarding investment or ejaculate investment between virgins and nonvirgins of the same size. There is evidence that other species of crickets do alter their ejaculate depending on the female size and mating history, but have less distinct guarding behaviour. We suggest that mate-guarding investment in G. sigillatus may serve a similar function to that of ejaculate investment in other crickets. [source]


Floral resources impact longevity and oviposition rate of a parasitoid in the field

Summary 1The use of floral resource subsidies to improve herbivore suppression by parasitoids requires certain trophic interactions and physiological changes to occur. While the longevity and fecundity of parasitoids are positively affected by nectar subsidies in laboratory studies, the impacts of floral subsidies on the fecundity and longevity of freely foraging parasitoids have not been studied. 2We studied the longevity and per capita fecundity of naturally occurring Diadegma insulare foraging in cabbage plots with and without borders of flowering buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum, as well as relationships between longevity, fecundity, sugar feeding and parasitism rates on larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. 3Relative longevity was estimated by counting broken setae on the fringe of the forewing. Floral borders increased the longevity of males and females in adjacent cabbage plots. 4The egg maturation rate of D. insulare was estimated by comparing egg loads of females collected early in the day with egg loads of females held without hosts in field cages throughout the day. Females in buckwheat cages matured 2·7 eggs per hour while females in control cages resorbed 0·27 eggs over the same time period. 5The fecundity of females collected in the afternoon was estimated by comparing their actual egg load to the estimated egg load in the absence of oviposition for females in a given plot. Females foraging in buckwheat plots had marginally fewer eggs remaining in their ovaries, and laid marginally more eggs than females in control plots. Females from both treatments carried 30,60 eggs by the afternoon and therefore were time-limited rather than egg-limited. 6Plots where a greater proportion of females had fed on sugar had longer-lived females. This suggests that feeding enhanced longevity of D. insulare. However, plots with longer-lived and more fecund females did not exhibit higher parasitism rates, although the power of these tests were low. [source]


Quantification and ultrastructure of oosorption in Eretmocerus eremicus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae)

Abstract The potential for and ultrastructure of oosorption were examined in Eretmocerus eremicus, a short-lived whitefly parasitoid that obligately produces anhydropic oocytes. In the absence of hosts, median egg load decreased by ,12% per day between 2 days and 8 days following eclosion. Parasitoid mating status had no significant effect on either egg load alone or the relationship between egg load and age. Yolk degradation in E. eremicus is autolytic, with the enzymes required for yolk sphere digestion apparently being derived from within the ooplasm. The exochorion appear to be digested by the follicular epithelium concurrent with the uniform degradation of the entire ooplasm. The potential adaptive benefits of this novel oosorption mechanism to E. eremicus females include a reduction in the total digestion time per oocyte and resorption of chorion remnants. Finally, to our knowledge, the results of this study provide the first unequivocal ultrastructural evidence of a purely autolytic oosorption mechanism in Insecta. J. Morphol. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Pharmacodynamics of pentoxifylline and/or praziquantel in murine schistosomiasis mansoni,

Pentoxifylline (PTX) was proved to exert both anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects, and was used therapeutically in this experimental model to investigate its role alone or with praziquantel (PZQ) in Schistosoma mansoni -infected mice, and to explore its impact on the tissue expression of transforming growth factor-,1 (TGF-,1). S. mansoni -infected mice were divided into seven groups: Control untreated (I), treated with curative dose of PZQ, 500 mg/kg/day for 2 consecutive days (II), or subcurative dose, 100 mg/kg/day for 2 consecutive days (III), treated with PTX (10 mg/kg/day for 5 days/wk) alone for 4 weeks (IV) or in addition to subcurative dose of PZQ (V), and treated with PTX alone for 8 weeks (VI) or in addition to subcurative dose of PZQ (VII). All animals were killed 10 weeks post infection. Parasitological assessment of worm burden, tissue egg load and oogram pattern was carried out. The degree of granulomatous fibrosis and eosinophilic cell population was quantified in Sirius-red-stained sections and tissue transforming growth factor beta-1 expression was estimated immunohistochemically. Serum ALAT and GGT, as well as hepatic content of reduced GSH, were measured. The results revealed the highest percent of worm reduction and dead ova in groups (II) and (VII) accompanied by significant diminution in granulomatous parameters, collagen content and TGF-,1 tissue expression. Moreover, treatments with PTX and/or PZQ ameliorated the liver functions. In conclusion, prolonged treatment with PTX has a potent anti-fibrogenic role especially when used in the early stages of infection, with limited toxic effects on schistosome worms and eggs. Thus, PTX can be used as an adjuvant therapeutic tool with anti-helminthic drugs in the treatment of human schistosomiasis. [source]

Effect of adamantylamide dipeptide as adjuvant therapy to praziquantel in mice infected with different S. mansoni isolates,

This work investigated the possible use of AdDP as adjuvant therapy to praziquantel (PZQ) in mice infected with PZQ-insusceptible Schistosoma mansoni isolate in a trial to increase the susceptibility of this isolate to the drug. Two batches of C57 BL/6 mice were infected with PZQ-susceptible and -insusceptible S. mansoni isolates, and each batch was divided into five groups. Seven weeks postinfection, the experimental group received AdDP (5 mg/kg) in addition to PZQ in reduced dose (3×100 mg/kg). Three of the remaining four groups were treated controls; they received AdDP, PZQ in reduced dose and in full dose (2×500 mg/kg), and the fourth group was infected untreated. In mice infected with PZQ-susceptible or -insusceptible S. mansoni isolate, praziquantel alone, and in addition to AdDP, reduced worm and egg loads and increased percentage dead eggs. Also, they improved the histopathological changes (reduction in granuloma diameter, percentage fibrotic area with increased percentage degenerated eggs). Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nitric oxide (NO) in culture of peritoneal macrophages, and number of CD68-positive cells were decreased with improved alanine amino transaminase. In mice receiving combined therapy AdDP+PZQ, the antischistosomal efficacy and the reductions in the inflammatory granulomatous reactions, NO in cultured peritoneal macrophages, percentage fibrotic areas recorded, were comparable to that in mice receiving full dose of PZQ, with significantly higher reduction in CD68 cells denoting enhanced antischistosomal efficacy and healing of the inflammatory reactions in the liver.
