The influence of joint damage caused by disengagement of member(s) is also considered in the analysis, and the degree of damage is modeled by a health index. A compound element model is employed to include the contributions of nonlinear behavior of beam-to-column connections, connection and member-end damage, member inelasticity, member shear deformation, and geometrical nonlinearity to structural response. Four beam collapse modes are illustrated for the progressive collapse analysis associated with debris loading generated when disengaged structural components fall onto lower parts of the structure. The impact effect is taken into account for the quasi-static nonlinear analysis by utilizing an impact amplification factor according to GSA and DoD guidelines. Any progressive collapse occurring thereafter involves a series of collapse events associated with topological changes of the frame. The analysis procedure is illustrated for the progressive collapse behavior of two planar steel frames. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is potentially an effective tool for the progressive collapse analysis of semi-rigid steel frames under abnormal loading events. [source] Maximum likelihood constrained deconvolution.CONCEPTS IN MAGNETIC RESONANCE, Issue 2 2003II: Application to experimental two-, three-dimensional NMR spectra Abstract The maximum likelihood method (MLM) and related protocols were applied to the experimental 2-D nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) spectrum of a 24-nucleotide RNA hairpin loop molecule. The output becomes more valuable when diagonal symmeterization is followed by MLM. This symmeterized maximum likelihood (SML) protocol restores the original spectral information with high fidelity by accurately partitioning components from overlapped peaks and provides substantial improvements in line shape and spectral resolution, in particular in the F1 dimension. These advantages lead to a simpler interpretation of the resonance frequencies, intensities, multiplet fine structure, and J -coupling values from a heavily overlapped peak region. This promises a more effective tool for peak picking, assignment, and integration. Also, application of MLM and related protocols to the 2-D NOE proton spectrum of a 24-mer RNA dramatically increases the number of NOE-based distance constraints that can be used for determination of its 3-D molecular structure. By application of 3-D MLM to a simple 3-D spectrum, the spectral resolution and signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio was greatly improved by effective line sharpening and reduction of cross-talk between planes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] Low internalised restraint predicts criminal recidivism in young female prisonersCRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR AND MENTAL HEALTH, Issue 5 2009Ellen Kjelsberg Background,The Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI) measures social-emotional adjustment along two dimensions: distress and restraint. Four types of adjustment according to this measure have been shown to correlate with criminal recidivism among young male prisoners: reactive (high distress, low restraint), suppressor (high distress, high restraint), non-reactive (low distress, low restraint) and repressor (low distress, high restraint). Aim,To evaluate the predictive potential of the WAI among young female prisoners. Methods,Women under 30 years old, consecutively admitted to one of three Norwegian prisons, were asked to complete the WAI. Most of those eligible (102, 94%) did so. Re-conviction data were collected from the National Crime Register 38 months (SD = 9.0) after release. Results,The overall re-conviction rate was 38%. Rates differed according to the four WAI types: 53% in the non-reactive, 50% in the reactive, 22% in the suppressor and 11% in the repressor group (p = 0.006). Kaplan,Meier analyses showed that group differences were explained by the WAI restraint dimension (p = 0.008). Differences on the distress dimension did not influence re-conviction. Cox regression analysis (adjusting for age at first court conviction and prior offences) found that women with low restraint scores were almost three times as likely to re-offend as women with high restraint scores. Conclusion,The WAI appears to be an effective tool for identifying women who are particularly vulnerable to re-offending. Evidence of high capacity for restraint is protective, regardless of distress levels and even after adjusting for the effect of other criminologically important factors. [source] THE MIRACLE OF THE CELLS: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF INTERVENTIONS TO INCREASE PAYMENT OF COURT-ORDERED FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS,CRIMINOLOGY AND PUBLIC POLICY, Issue 1 2008DAVID WEISBURD Research Summary: In this article, we present findings from an experimental study of an innovative program in fine enforcement developed by the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) of New Jersey, termed Project MUSTER (MUST Earn Restitution). The project was initiated by the New Jersey AOC as a response to concerns among probation personnel that probationers sentenced to monetary penalties often failed to meet their financial obligations. The program sought to increase payment of court-ordered financial obligations among probationers who are seriously delinquent in paying fines, penalties, and restitution, and was designed to "strengthen the effectiveness of restitution and fine sanctions by forcing those offenders who have the ability to make regular payments to do so." Project MUSTER relied on a combination of intensive probation, threats of violation to court and incarceration, and community service. We find that probationers sentenced to Project MUSTER were significantly more likely to pay court-ordered financial obligations than were those who experienced regular probation supervision. However, probationers sentenced to a second treatment group, in which the only intervention was violation of probation (one part of the MUSTER program), had similar outcomes to the MUSTER condition. These findings suggest that the main cause of fine payment was a deterrent threat of possible incarceration, which is often termed the "miracle of the cells." Policy Implications: Our study shows that it is possible to gain greater compliance with court-ordered financial obligations and that such compliance may be gained with a relatively simple and straightforward criminal justice intervention. Threats of violation of probation are an effective tool for gaining compliance with financial obligations. Given the growing interest in monetary penalties as an alternative to incarceration, these findings have particular policy importance. Handa Objective:, Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in combination with radiological examination has recently gained clinical recognition for evaluating skeletal lesions. We evaluated our experience with the use of FNA in diagnosing bone lesions with emphasis on areas of difficulty and limitations. Materials and Methods:, Over a period of 5 years FNA was performed in 66 cases of bone lesions. Aspirations were done by cytopathologists using 22-gauge needle. Out of 66 cases unsatisfactory aspirate was obtained in 12 cases. Cytohistological correlation was available in 19 cases. Results:, Adequate aspirates were categorized into neoplastic (27 cases) and non-neoplastic (27 cases) lesions. Of the 27neoplastic aspirates, 20 were malignant (12 primary, 8 metastatic deposits) and 7 were benign. In the malignant group osteosarcoma was correctly diagnosed in 3 cases while other 3 were labeled as sarcoma NOS because of lack of osteoid. Metastatic deposits were sub-typed in 6 cases; from renal cell carcinoma (3 cases), proststic adenocarcinoma, follicular carcinoma thyroid, and squamous cell carcinoma. Neoplastic group comprised of 6 cases of cysts and 21 cases of chronic osteomyelitis. Thirteen cases were diagnosed as tuberculous osteomyelitis. Conclusions:, FNA is a frequent indication in metastases in the bone where distinct cytologic features can even identify an unknown primary. However, diagnosis of primary tumours of the bone is limited by precise subtyping of the tumours. FNA has emerged as a cost effective tool for initial diagnosis of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of the bone. Two patients with recalcitrant pilonidal sinus disease were treated in the lower back, buttocks, and perigluteal cleft area with an 800 nm diode laser with a spot size of 9 × 9 mm, fluences of 30 to 48 J/cm2, and pulse widths of 15 to 24 milliseconds. results. Long-term relief of pilonidal sinus disease was produced with as few as two treatments 2 months apart to as many as six treatments over a 2-year period. With each successive treatment, fewer pulses were needed and the interval between treatments increased. conclusion. The 800 nm diode laser may be an effective tool in the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease. By eliminating the source of hair and hair fragments that course along the surface of the lower back and buttocks, interruption of the etiologic source for pilonidal sinus disease can be accomplished. This paper describes ex vivo images for endoscopically resected specimens of superficial esophageal cancer using endocytoscopy with methylene blue staining. The endocytoscopy images of cancerous and non-cancerous sites corresponded generally with horizontal histological images. The pattern of the cellular arrangement and the size and shape of cells were similar between endocytoscopy and horizontal histological imaging. Endocytoscopy is an effective tool for diagnosis of esophageal cancer. [source] High-sensitive determination of human ,-thrombin by its 29-mer aptamer in affinity probe capillary electrophoresisELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 12 2008Yilin Li Abstract ACE technique provides an effective tool for the separation and identification of disease-related biomarkers in clinical analysis. In recent years, a couple of synthetic DNA or RNA oligonucleotides, known as aptamers, rival the specificity and affinity for targets to antibodies and are employed as one kind of powerful affinity probe in ACE. In this work, based on high affinity between antithrombin aptamer and thrombin (their dissociation constant is 0.5,nM), a carboxyfluorescein-labeled 29-nucleotide (nt) aptamer (F29-mer) was used and an aptamer-based affinity probe CE (aptamer-based APCE) method was successfully established for high-sensitive detection and quantitative analysis of thrombin. Experimental conditions including incubation temperature and time, buffer composition, and concentration of cations were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized condition, the linear range was from 0 to 400,nM and the LOD was 2,nM (74,ng/mL, S/N,=,3), i.e., 40,amol, both in running buffer and in 5% v/v human serum. This LOD is the lowest one than those achieved by the previous APCE methods but based on a 15-mer aptamer. This approach offers a promising method for the rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of thrombin in practical utility. Further binding experiments using one carboxyfluorescein-labeled aptamer and the other nonlabeled aptamer or vice versa were carried out to deduce the formation of ternary complex when these two aptamers coexisted in the free solution with thrombin. [source] Determination of the bacterial pathogen Edwardsiella tarda in fish species by capillary electrophoresis with blue light-emitting diode-induced fluorescenceELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 18-19 2004Lijun Yu Abstract High-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) has been applied to the identification, separation, and quantitation of intact bacteria. We demonstrate that a pathogen (Edwardsiella tarda) which causes systemic infection in commercially important fish species can be rapidly identified and determined (<10 min) after direct injection into fish fluid by CE blue light-emitting diode (LED)-induced fluorescence. SYTO 13 (488 nm/509 nm), a cell-permeable green nucleic acid stain, was used to stain the cells. Remarkably high efficiency (>1 200,000 theoretical plates/m) was achieved with this rapid and efficient CE method. It was found that proper sample vortexing (90 s) would be beneficial to disperse aggregated cells and facilitate the focusing of intact cells during electrophoresis. Ionization of the surface constituents of Edwardsiella tarda cells provided efficient surface charges for the intact cells to be separated from the EOF and damaged or lysed cells when the separation was performed in running buffer (3.94 mM Tris, 0.56 mM borate, 0.013 mM EDTA) at pH 10.5. The limit of detection (LOD) and recovery were found to be 4.2×104 cells/mL and 70.0%, respectively. This proposed CE method could become an effective tool for diagnosis and tracking of certain diseases caused by bacteria in fish species as well as in human beings. [source] Capillary zone electrophoresis with a dynamic double coating for analysis of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin in human serum: Impact of resolution between disialo- and trisialotransferrin on reference limitsELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 24 2003Christian Lanz Abstract Capillary electrophoresis with a dynamic double coating formed by charged polymeric reagents represents a very effective tool for the separation of iron-saturated transferrin (Tf) isoforms and thus the determination of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) in human serum. The resolution between di- and trisialo-Tf is dependent on the applied voltage and capillary temperature. With a 50 ,m inside diameter (ID) capillary of about 60 cm total length mounted into the P/ACE MDQ, 28 kV and 40°C, the resolution of the two Tf isoforms is shown to be between 1.0 and 1.4, whereas with reduced voltage and/or temperature, increased resolution at the expense of elongated run times is observed. Best data with complete resolution (Rs , 1.4) are obtained at 20 kV and 30°C. For the determination of CDT in serum, incomplete separation of di- and trisialo-Tf is demonstrated to have an impact on the reference limits. Analysis of the sera of 54 healthy individuals with no or moderate alcohol consumption and using valley-to-valley peak integration, the upper (lower) reference limits for CDT in relation to total Tf at the two power levels are 1.33 (0.52) and 1.57 (0.81)%, respectively, representing intervals that are significantly different (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the reference intervals are shown to be strongly dependent on the peak integration approach used. Valley-to-valley peak integration should only be employed for conditions with complete resolution between disialo- and trisialo-Tf. [source] Long-term effectiveness of computer-generated tailored patient education on benzodiazepines: a randomized controlled trialADDICTION, Issue 4 2008Geeske Brecht Ten Wolde ABSTRACT Aims Chronic benzodiazepine use is highly prevalent and is associated with a variety of negative health consequences. The present study examined the long-term effectiveness of a tailored patient education intervention on benzodiazepine use. Design A randomized controlled trial was conducted comprising three arms, comparing (i) a single tailored intervention; (ii) a multiple tailored intervention and (iii) a general practitioner letter. The post-test took place after 12 months. Participants Five hundred and eight patients using benzodiazepines were recruited by their general practitioners and assigned randomly to one of the three groups. Intervention Two tailored interventions, the single tailored intervention (patients received one tailored letter) and the multiple tailored intervention (patients received three sequential tailored letters at intervals of 1 month), were compared to a short general practitioner letter that modelled usual care. The tailored interventions not only provided different and more information than the general practitioner letter; they were also personalized and adapted to individual baseline characteristics. The information in both tailored interventions was the same, but in the multiple tailored intervention the information was provided to the participants spread over three occasions. In the multiple tailored intervention, the second and the third tailored letters were based on short and standardized telephone interviews. Measurements Benzodiazepine cessation at post-test was the outcome measure. Findings The results showed that participants receiving the tailored interventions were twice as likely to have quit benzodiazepine use compared to the general practitioner letter. Particularly among participants with the intention to discontinue usage at baseline, both tailored interventions led to high percentages of those who actually discontinued usage (single tailored intervention 51.7%; multiple tailored intervention 35.6%; general practitioner letter 14.5%). Conclusions It was concluded that tailored patient education can be an effective tool for reducing benzodiazepine use, and can be implemented easily. [source] A nonlethal microsampling technique to monitor the effects of mercury on wild bird eggsENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 3 2009Katherine R. Stebbins Abstract Methylmercury is the predominant chemical form of mercury reported in the eggs of wild birds, and the embryo is the most sensitive life stage to methylmercury toxicity. Protective guidelines have been based mainly on captive-breeding studies with chickens (Gallus gallus), mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) or on field studies where whole eggs were collected and analyzed and the effects of the mercury were measured based on the reproductive success of the remaining eggs. However, both of these methods have limitations. As an alternative, we developed a technique that involves extracting a small sample of albumen from a live egg, sealing the egg, returning the egg to its nest to be naturally incubated by the parents, and then relating the hatching success of this microsampled egg to its mercury concentration. After first developing this technique in the laboratory using chicken and mallard eggs, we selected the laughing gull (Larus atricilla) and black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) as test subjects in the field. We found that 92% of the microsampled laughing gull eggs met our reproductive endpoint of survival to the beginning of hatching compared to 100% for the paired control eggs within the same nests. Microsampled black-necked stilt eggs exhibited 100% hatching success compared to 93% for the paired control eggs. Our results indicate that microsampling is an effective tool for nonlethally sampling mercury concentrations in eggs and, as such, can be used for monitoring sensitive species, as well as for improving studies that examine the effects of mercury on avian reproduction. Pandey Abstract In the peaks-over-threshold (POT) method of extreme quantile estimation, the selection of a suitable threshold is critical to estimation accuracy. In practical applications, however, the threshold selection is not so obvious due to erratic variation of quantile estimates with minor changes in threshold. To address this issue, the article investigates the variation of quantile uncertainty (bias and variance) as a function of threshold using a semi-parametric bootstrap algorithm. Furthermore, the article compares the performance of L-moment and de Haan methods that are used for fitting the Pareto distribution to peak data. The analysis of simulated and actual U.S. wind speed data illustrates that the L-moment method can lead to almost unbiased quantile estimates for certain thresholds. A threshold corresponding to minimum standard error appears to provide reasonable estimates of wind speed extremes. It is concluded that the quantification of uncertainty associated with a quantile estimate is necessary for selecting a suitable threshold and estimating the design wind speed. Hunter Summary Atresia coli, a rare congenital defect, was diagnosed in a foal via colonoscopy after N-butylscopolammonium bromide was used to aid visualisation of the intestinal defect. Colonoscopy is a cost effective tool for diagnosing atresia of the terminal colon. N-butylscopolammonium bromide aided colonoscopy has not been previously reported in horses. Rumble Cooperation in social dilemmas is often challenged by negative noise, or unintended errors, such that the actual behavior is less cooperative than intended,for example, arriving later than intended for a meeting due to an unusual traffic jam. The present research was inspired by the notion that doing a little more for one's interaction partner, which may be movitvated by empathetic feelings, can effectively reduce the detrimental effects of "negative noise," or unintended incidents of noncooperation. Consistent with hypotheses, negative noise exhibited detrimental effects on cooperation, but such effects were absent when empathy-motivated cooperation was present. We conclude that empathy has broad benefits for social interaction, in that it can be an effective tool for coping with misinterpreted behaviors, thereby maintaining or enhancing cooperation. Kaal Summary Biomass burning produces a residue called black carbon (BC). Black C is generally considered to be highly resistant against biodegradation and has a potential role in the global C cycle, but is difficult to identify and quantify when subjected to prolonged degradation in terrestrial sediments. The colluvial soils from Campo Lameiro (NW Spain), also known as ,Atlantic rankers', are rich in organic matter (up to 140 g C kg,1 soil). A micromorphological study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that a large proportion of the organic matter was derived from BC formed during Holocene wildfires (up to > 6000 years ago). As roughly estimated from image analysis of 12 thin sections, the volumetric BC contribution ranged between 10 and 60% (26% on average) of the organic matter. This is a conservative estimate as additional morphologically unrecognizable BC was present in the microgranular matrix of coalesced excrement. We conclude that (i) currently unknown quantities of BC are stored in Atlantic rankers and (ii) analysis of thin sections is an effective tool to identify BC. [source] Gender Quotas in Politics: The Greek System in the Light of EU LawEUROPEAN LAW JOURNAL, Issue 1 2010Panos Kapotas Positive action is currently gaining momentum in the European anti-discrimination discourse and policy-making as a necessary and effective tool to achieve the goal of full and effective equality in employment. Gender quotas in politics, however, are thought to remain outside the normative scope of Community law, the dominant view being that candidature for elected public office does not constitute employment in the sense of the relevant provisions. This article seeks to examine the Greek quota system for women in politics in its dialectical relationship to the general equality discourse and with reference to the current normative framework in Europe. The aims are threefold: to assess the legality of positive action in favour of women in politics from the point of view of EU law, to evaluate the effectiveness of the Greek system in achieving its gender equality goals, and to identify the problems that quotas in politics may pose with regard to the principle of democratic representation. It will, thus, be argued that positive measures in politics, though generally compatible with the fundamental principles of justice and representative democracy, may nevertheless be inadequate,at least in their current form,to provide effective solutions to the unequal distribution of social and political power. [source] Prediction of protein structural class by amino acid and polypeptide compositionFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 17 2002Rui-yan Luo A new approach of predicting structural classes of protein domain sequences is presented in this paper. Besides the amino acid composition, the composition of several dipeptides, tripeptides, tetrapeptides, pentapeptides and hexapeptides are taken into account based on the stepwise discriminant analysis. The result of jackknife test shows that this new approach can lead to higher predictive sensitivity and specificity for reduced sequence similarity datasets. Considering the dataset PDB40-B constructed by Brenner and colleagues, 75.2% protein domain sequences are correctly assigned in the jackknife test for the four structural classes: all-,, all-,, ,/, and , + ,, which is improved by 19.4% in jackknife test and 25.5% in resubstitution test, in contrast with the component-coupled algorithm using amino acid composition alone (AAC approach) for the same dataset. In the cross-validation test with dataset PDB40-J constructed by Park and colleagues, more than 80% predictive accuracy is obtained. Furthermore, for the dataset constructed by Chou and Maggiona, the accuracy of 100% and 99.7% can be easily achieved, respectively, in the resubstitution test and in the jackknife test merely taking the composition of dipeptides into account. [source] Effects of methylcyclodextrin on lysosomesFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 5 2001Michel Jadot The cholesterol complexing agent methyl-cyclodextrin (MCD) provides an efficient mean for the removal of cholesterol from biological membranes. In order to study the effects of this agent on the lysosomal membrane in situ, we treated HepG2 cells with MCD and studied the effects of this treatment on lysosomes in isolated fractions. We found that lysosomes prepared from treated cells are more sensitive to various membrane perturbing treatments such as: incubation of lysosomes in isotonic glucose, in hypotonic sucrose or in the presence of the lytic agent glycyl- l -phenylalanine 2-naphthylamide. The lysosomal membrane is also less resistant to increased hydrostatic pressure. Centrifugation methods were used to analyse the effect of MCD on lysosomes. Isopycnic centrifugation in sucrose density gradients demonstrates that the drug induces a reversible density increase of the lysosomes. Our study indicates that extracellularly added MCD can modify the properties of the lysosomal membrane in living cells. It suggests that MCD could be an effective tool to modulate the physical properties of lysosomes within intact cells and to monitor the cellular responses to such modifications. Nielsen Abstract The abundance, identity and activity of uncultured Bacteria and Actinobacteria present in a drinking water reservoir (North Pine Dam, Brisbane, Australia) were determined using a combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) alone or with catalysed reporter deposition (CARD-FISH) with microautoradiography. The CARD-FISH technique was modified relative to previous described procedures and performed directly on gelatine cover slips in order to allow simultaneous combination with microautoradiography. Almost twofold higher numbers of microorganisms could be identified as either Bacteria or Actinobacteria using the CARD-FISH technique as compared with the traditional FISH technique. A combination of FISH or CARD-FISH with microautoradiography showed generally higher activity among the Actinobacteria than among all Bacteria. Another important observation was that many cells within the FISH-negative populations of both Actinobacteria and Bacteria were actively assimilating thymidine. Thus, great care should be taken when extrapolating the active fraction of a prokaryotic community to be equivalent to the FISH-detectable population in such environments. Bacterial groups within Actinobacteria produce the odours geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, which lower the quality of surface water when used for drinking. The results indicate that combined microautoradiography and CARD-FISH may serve as an effective tool when studying identity and activity of microorganisms within freshwater environments. Whittaker A ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey of 101 mounds at the Sny Magill Unit of Effigy Mounds National Monument, Iowa, demonstrates that GPR can be an effective tool to evaluate the structure and condition of mounds without damaging them. Ideal survey conditions and improved processing technology allow for the identification of strata within the mounds, as well as areas of post-construction disturbance and possible archaeological features within the mounds. Provisional interpretations indicate that 60 are intact conical mounds with minimal post-construction disturbance, and two show very strong evidence of containing interior burial platforms; 29 are badly damaged by non-cultural or cultural activity; two are probable non-cultural mounds; nine are reasonably intact linear and effigy mounds; one is an excavated effigy mound. The primary and secondary oral cancer prevention efforts in India were reviewed and presented. In addition, the scope of the oral cancer problem and the tobacco industry in India are discussed, and the chief etiologies in the region are summarized. Results and Conclusions. The effectiveness of these prevention efforts provides an excellent social/behavioral model for similar programs in other developing countries. Among others, surface electromyography (sEMG) is an important tool for the evaluation of risks related to work activity. Three main issues have been approached in ergonomics via sEMG: 1) the analysis of muscle activation, 2) the analysis of exerted forces and torques, and 3) the analysis of muscle fatigue. Many studies have been carried out in static conditions. In ergonomics, however, it is more relevant to study muscle activity and fatigue during real tasks that are, in general, dynamic. From isometric to dynamic contractions, the complexity of the interpretation of sEMG signals increases considerably. Changes in sEMG signals are related to the continuous modifications in force output, muscle fiber length, and relative position of surface electrodes and sources. To increase the reliability of the information extracted from sEMG, multichannel detection systems have been applied, showing the possibility of overcoming some limits of the standard technique. Some illustrative laboratory and field studies are reported in this work to illustrate the potentialities and the open problems in the use of multichannel sEMG in ergonomics. Case 1 is a laboratory study investigating the myoelectric manifestations of fatigue in the biceps brachii (BB) during dynamic elbow flexion/extension. Case 2 is a laboratory study investigating the myoelectric manifestations of fatigue during a repetitive lifting task. Case 3 is a field study, carried out in an automotive plant, investigating muscle activation during the welding of a car door. Many factors play a leading role in the correct interpretation of information provided by sEMG. Even though multichannel sEMG provides information able to improve the estimation of force and/or fatigue during working tasks, many problems related to the signal acquisition and interpretation are still open. Abstract The integrated hydrological modelling system, IHMS, has been described in detail in Part 1 of this paper. The system comprises three models: Distributed Catchment Scale Model (DiCaSM), MODFLOW (v96 and v2000) and SWI. The DiCaSM simulates different components of the unsaturated zone water balance, including groundwater recharge. The recharge output from DiCaSM is used as input to the saturated zone model MODFLOW, which subsequently calculates groundwater flows and head distributions. The main objectives of this paper are: (1) to show the way more accurate predictions of groundwater levels in two Cyprus catchments can be obtained using improved estimates of groundwater recharge from the catchment water balance, and (2) to demonstrate the interface utility that simulates communication between unsaturated and saturated zone models and allows the transmission of data between the two models at the required spatial and temporal scales. The linked models can be used to predict the impact of future climate change on surface and groundwater resources and to estimate the future water supply shortfall in the island up to 2050. The DiCaSM unsaturated zone model was successfully calibrated and validated against stream flows with reasonable values for goodness of fit as shown by the Nash-Sutcliffe criterion. Groundwater recharge obtained from the successful tests was applied at various spatial and temporal scales to the Kouris and Akrotiri catchments in Cyprus. These recharge values produced good estimates of groundwater levels in both catchments. Once calibrated, the model was run using a number of possible future climate change scenarios. The results showed that by 2050, groundwater and surface water supplies would decrease by 35% and 24% for Kouris and 20% and 17% for Akrotiri, respectively. The gap between water supply and demand showed a linear increase with time. Bradford Abstract In arctic streams, depth of thaw beneath the stream channel is likely a significant parameter controlling hyporheic zone hydrology and biogeochemical cycling. As part of an interdisciplinary study of this system, we conducted a field investigation to test the effectiveness of imaging substream permafrost using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). We investigated three sites characterized by low-energy water flow, organic material lining the streambeds, and water depths ranging from 0·2 to 2 m. We acquired data using a 200 MHz pulsed radar system with the antennas mounted in the bottom of a small rubber boat that was pulled across the stream while triggering the radar at a constant rate. We achieved excellent results at all three sites, with a clear continuous image of the permafrost boundary both peripheral to and beneath the stream.
