Total Factor Productivity and Monetary Policy: Evidence from Conditional Volatility,

This paper empirically assesses whether monetary policy and its volatility affect real economic activity through their effect on the aggregate supply side of the macroeconomy. Analysts typically argue that monetary policy either does not affect the real economy (the classical dichotomy) or only affects the real economy in the short run through aggregate demand (new Keynesian or new classical theories). Real business cycle theorists try to explain the business cycle with supply-side productivity shocks. We provide some preliminary evidence about how monetary policy and its volatility affect the aggregate supply side of the macroeconomy through their effect on total factor productivity and its volatility. Total factor productivity provides an important measure of supply-side performance. The results show that monetary policy and its volatility exert a positive and statistically significant effect on the supply side of the macroeconomy. Moreover, the findings buttress the importance of reducing short-run swings in monetary policy variables as well as support the adoption of an optimal money supply rule. Our results also prove consistent with the effective role of monetary policy during the so-called ,Great Moderation' in US gross domestic product volatility beginning in the early 1980s. [source]


Immunohistochemical analysis of heme oxygenase-1 in preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions during chemical hepatocarcinogenesis,

Summary Heme oxygenase (HO) breaks down the pro-oxidant heme into carbon monoxide, iron and the antioxidant biliverdin. The isoform HO-1 plays an effective role to counteract oxidative damage and to control inflammation. Prolonged cellular damage due to chronic inflammation is one of the reasons leading to the development of tumours. The aim of this work was to investigate HO-1 expression and localization along the different stages of chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis (HCC) and the occurring morphological changes. To provoke sustained oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, CF1 mice received dietary p -dimethylaminoazobenzene (DAB, 0.5%, w/w) during a whole period of 14 months. HO-1 expression increased along the experimental trial in morphologically normal hepatocytes in DAB-treated animals. HO-1 expression diminished in altered hepatic foci (AHF) and oval cells and early preneoplastic lesions. Otherwise, marked HO-1 overexpression was detected in Kupffer cells and macrophages surrounding necrotic and nodular areas. Adenomas showed decreased HO-1 immunostaining. In hepatocellular carcinomas, an inverse relationship was found between the immunohistochemical expression of HO-1 and the degree of tumour differentiation, being negative in poorly differentiated tumours. In our experimental model, down modulation of HO-1 expression correlated with malignancy progression. Thus, our data point to activation of HO-1 as a potential therapeutic tool. [source]


Is a long-term ranitidine-based triple therapy against Helicobacter pylori only a heritage of the past?

A prospective, randomized clinicopharmacological study
Summary Background:, Acid suppression plus two antibiotics is currently considered the gold standard anti- Helicobacter pylori treatment, but the effective role of gastric antisecretory drugs is still poorly understood. Aims:, To compare a 14-day ranitidine-based triple regimen against Helicobacter pylori with one based on omeprazole, and to study the influence of antisecretory drugs on metronidazole pharmacokinetics in human plasma. Methods:, A total of 150 dyspeptic H. pylori -infected patients were randomized for ranitidine 300 mg b.d. (RCM group) or omeprazole 20 mg b.d. (OCM group) 14-day triple therapy, with clarithromycin 500 mg b.d. and metronidazole 500 mg b.d. On the eighth day of therapy, metronidazole pharmacokinetics was studied in plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic parameters (terminal half-life, area under the curve, peak-plasma level, peak time) of metronidazole were computed using standard non-compartmental methods. H. pylori status was monitored before and 4 weeks after the end of therapy by histology, serology and rapid urease test. Results:, On an intention-to-treat basis, eradication rates were 91 and 76% for the RCM and OCM groups respectively (P < 0.02). Significantly different pharmacokinetic parameters of metronidazole were found between the groups: peak-plasma level (P < 0.01) and area under the curve (P < 0.02). Conclusion:, Our results show that the RCM regimen was more effective than that based on OCM and that the antisecretory drugs affected metronidazole availability, increasing the efficacy of ranitidine-based regimens. Hypoglycaemic activity of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.

Abstract The antidiabetic activity of various subfractions of the alcohol extract of the bark of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. was evaluated in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The effect of these extracts on lipid profile and liver function tests were also assessed to evaluate their activity in controlling diabetes related metabolic alterations. The parameters measured were plasma glucose, total protein, cholesterol, triglycerides, alkaline phosphatase, SGOT and SGPT. The results indicate the effective role of Pterocarpus marsupium on the above mentioned parameters indicating that Pterocarpus marsupium can also control the diabetes related metabolic alterations apart from controlling the glucose levels. Among the fractions tested the butanol subfraction was found to be more active in comparison with other subfractions. It can be concluded that the butanol subfraction of the alcohol extract of Pterocarpus marsupium exhibits significant antidiabetic activity and corrects the metabolic alterations in diabetic rats and this activity may resemble insulin-like properties. Water absorption behavior of different types of organophilic montmorillonite-filled polyamide 6/polypropylene nanocomposites

The water absorption behavior of different types of organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT)-filled polyamide 6/polypropylene nanocomposites with and without compatibilizers (maleated PP or PP- g -MA and maleated styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene or SEBS- g -MA) was evaluated. Four different types of OMMT, i.e., dodecylamine-modified MMT (D-MMT), 12 aminolauric acid-modified MMT (A-MMT), stearylamine-modified MMT (S-MMT), and commercial organo-MMT (C-MMT) were used as reinforcement. The water absorption response of the nanocomposites was studied and analyzed by tensile test and morphology assessment by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The kinetics of water absorption of the nanocomposites conforms to Fick's law. The Mm and D are dependent on the types of OMMT and compatibilizers. The equilibrium water content and diffusivity of PA6/PP blend were increased by the addition of OMMT but decreased in the presence of compatibilizers. On water absorption, both strength and stiffness of the nanocomposites were drastically decreased, but the ductility was remarkably increased. Both PP- g -MA and SEBS- g -MA played an effective role as compatibilizers for the nanocomposites. This was manifested by their higher retention ability in strength and stiffness (in the wet and re-dried states), reduced the equilibrium water content, and diffusivity of the nanocomposites. POLYM. Neural control of eustachian tube function,,

Abstract Objectives/Hypothesis: It has been hypothesized that middle ear pressure can be controlled by the Eustachian tube through a neuronal reflex arc in animal models. We aimed to define the role of the neuronal control mechanisms in regulating middle ear pressure in humans. Study Design: Prospective study. Methods: The study population consisted of 95 ears of 95 volunteers. The mechanoreceptors on the tympanic membrane and the baroreceptors in the middle ear, which are assumed to form the afferent plexus of the neuronal reflex arc, were blocked by topical administration of lidocaine hydrochloride, in various patient groups. The Eustachian tube functions forming the efferent plexus of the neuronal reflex arc were evaluated by manometric tests both before and after blocking the possible afferent plexus in each study group. Results: The baroreceptors established in the tympanic plexus might possibly have an effective role in this mechanism where the mechanoreceptors on the tympanic membrane seem to have a minor effect. The article by Pat Caplan in this issue discusses a number of recent BBC broadcasts focused on allegations of witchcraft and child sacrifice, and asks what anthropologists have to offer in terms of understanding such topics. Caplan notes that they can not only contribute their knowledge of the occult in many societies, but also contextualize this realm in terms of historical processes and more material concerns. In addition, anthropologists can suggest links between apparently disparate issues and thereby go beyond surface manifestations. While anthropologists have no monopoly on truth claims, they can sometimes offer alternative explanations and show that things are not always the way they first seem. In order to play an effective role as public intellectuals in this regard, anthropologists need to be willing to grapple pro-actively with such matters of public concern, not least by engaging constructively with the media. Geriatric Oncology and Primary Care: Promoting Partnerships in Practice and Research

This supplement is a compilation of original work that was presented at an interdisciplinary conference on "Geriatric Oncology and Primary Care: Promoting Partnerships in Practice and Research" held in Cleveland, Ohio, April 3 to 4, 2008. An audience of 77 clinicians and researchers attended this conference, primarily coming from Ohio and adjacent states. Articles are organized around a conceptual framework to consider primary and shared care roles of primary care physicians (PCPs) and oncologists in the care of older patients with cancer and their families. Articles in Section One focus on evidence-based clinical practice and recommendations. Section Two includes articles on original psychosocial and health services research that inform this topic. Papers in this conference were developed in recognition of the greater prevalence and growing incidence of cancer in older adults; the unique geriatric expertise and practice considerations essential to the prevention and control of cancer in older adults; the important and effective roles that PCPs may play in such care; and the need to develop shared care models that foster collaboration between PCPs and oncologists, from cancer prevention through long-term survivorship and end-of-life care of older adults. Models of shared care between oncologists and PCPs should be tested and compared for optimal care of older patients with cancer and their families. Potential implications of ideally shared care include more-informed patient-centered decision-making, better adherence to treatment, improved match between older patient goals and treatments, and thus better outcomes.
