Selected AbstractsApplying the proximity compatibility and the control-display compatibility principles to engineering design interfacesHUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS IN MANUFACTURING & SERVICE INDUSTRIES, Issue 1 2006Ling Rothrock The authors determine the utility of applying two display design principles toward the development of interfaces for engineering design. The first principle, called the Proximity Compatibility Principle, specifies that displays relevant to a common task or mental operation should be rendered close together in perceptual space. The second principle, called the Control-Display Compatibility Principle, stipulates that the spatial arrangement and manipulation of controls should be easily distinguishable. To examine the utility of both principles, the authors conducted an experiment comparing the ability of subjects to find effective designs using a separable versus a configural interface in a multi-objective engineering design task. Results suggest that the proximity compatibility principle is an effective indicator of task performance. [source] Analysis of soil moisture patterns in forested and suburban catchments in Baltimore, Maryland, using high-resolution photogrammetric and LIDAR digital elevation datasetsHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 2 2006D. Tenenbaum Abstract Field observations of near-surface soil moisture, collected over several seasons in a watershed in suburban Maryland, are compared with values of the topographic soil moisture index generated using digital elevation models (DEMs) at a range of grid cell sizes from photogrammetric and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data sources. A companion set of near-surface soil moisture observations, DEMs and topographic index values are also presented for a nearby forested catchment. The degree to which topographic index values are an effective indicator of near-surface soil moisture conditions varies in the two environments. The urbanizing environment requires topographic index values from a DEM with a much finer grid cell resolution than the LIDAR data can provide, and the relationship is stronger in wetter conditions. In the forested environment, the DEM resolution required is considerably lower and adequately supported by the photogrammetric data, and the relationship is strong under all moisture conditions. These results provide some insights into the length scales of near-surface hydrological processes in the urbanizing environment, and the resolution of terrain data required to model those processes. [source] Active MMP-2 effectively identifies the presence of colorectal cancerINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CANCER, Issue 12 2009Mary Jo Murnane Abstract Fully active MMP-2 is expressed at such low levels in human tissues that studies often fail to confirm its value as a cancer marker despite strong associations with malignancy. Our study utilized careful extraction, accurate activity measurements, standardization to purified controls and a new statistical metric to determine whether active MMP-2 is an effective indicator of colorectal cancer compared to pro-MMP-2 or pro-MMP-9. MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities were analyzed in matched normal and cancer samples from 269 patients by gelatin zymography, computer-assisted image analysis, serial dilutions of strong samples and standardization to controls. An index of effect size was designed for comparative evaluation of active MMP-2, pro-MMP-2 and pro-MMP-9 activities. For each gelatinase, mean activity and protein levels/mg soluble protein in normal mucosa and colorectal cancer were calculated for the first time with respect to commercial standards. Active MMP-2 activity, detected in 99% of colorectal cancers, was higher in 95% of cancers (on average 10-fold) than in normal mucosa. Levels of pro-MMP-2 and pro-MMP-9, but not active MMP-9, activities were also significantly higher in cancers versus normal. However, active MMP-2 activity provided the most effective test for the presence of cancer (p < 0.0.0001) with an effect size statistically significantly larger than for either pro-MMP-2 or pro-MMP-9. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves demonstrated that a cut-off for active MMP-2 of >44 SDU activity/mg soluble protein (>180 pg/mg), which is three times mean normal levels, would permit detection of colorectal cancer with an estimated sensitivity of 84% and estimated specificity of 93%. © 2009 UICC [source] Disturbance indicators and population decline of logged species in Mt. Elgon Forest, KenyaAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2010Joseph Hitimana Abstract Mount (Mt) Elgon forest in western Kenya is important for biodiversity, environmental protection and socio-economic development. Characterizing forest conditions is essential for evaluation of sustainable management and conservation activities. This paper covers findings of a study which determined and analysed indicators useful in monitoring disturbance levels in the Mt Elgon Forest. A systematic survey was carried out and covered 305 plots of 0.02 ha and 250 smaller nested regeneration plots along 10 belt transects that were distributed in five blocks within the moist lower montane forest type. Collected and analysed data include types of disturbance, tree species composition, abundance and logged species. Correlation breakdown among disturbance types revealed that, paths were indicators of the number of tree harvesting sites (rs =1.00, P < 0.01) and of de-vegetated areas through grass harvesting (rs = 0.90, P = 0.04). Solanum mauritianum Scop. was an indicator of old-charcoal production sites. Logging targeted 13 tree species and harvested trees with diameter at breast height above 20 cm. The most exploited species were Olea capensis L. and Deinbolia kilimandscharica Taub. All exploited species had low regeneration but tree regeneration was not an effective indicator of logging. Résumé La forêt du Mont Elgon, dans l'ouest du Kenya, est importante pour sa biodiversité, pour la protection de l'environnement et pour le développement socioéconomique. Il est essentiel de bien définir les caractéristiques de ses conditions pour pouvoir évaluer les activités de gestion durable et de conservation. Cet article reprend les résultats d'une étude qui a déterminé et analysé des indicateurs intéressants pour pouvoir suivre le niveau de perturbation dans la forêt du Mont Elgon. Une étude systématique fut menée, qui a couvert 305 parcelles de 0,02 ha et 250 plus petites parcelles de régénération incluses le long de 10 transects de ceinture, distribuées en cinq blocs dans la forêt humide de basse montagne. Les données récoltées et analysées comprennent les types de perturbation, la composition des espèces d'arbres, leur abondance et celles qui sont exploitées. Une rupture de corrélation parmi les types de perturbation a révélé que les sentiers étaient des indicateurs du nombre de sites oùétaient récoltés les arbres (rs = 1.00; P < 0.01) et de zones sans végétation à cause de la récolte de l'herbe (rs = 0.90; P < 0.04). Solanum mauritianum Scop. était un indicateur d'anciens sites de production de charbon de bois. Les coupes d'arbres concernaient 13 espèces dont le diamètre à hauteur de poitrine dépassait 20 cm. Les espèces les plus exploitées étaient Olea capensis L. et Deinbolia kilimandscharica Taub. Toutes les espèces exploitées avaient une faible régénération, mais une régénération d'arbres n'était pas un indicateur fiable d'anciennes coupes d'arbres. [source] Design and Fracture of Layered Al2O3/TZ3Y Composites Produced by Electrophoretic DepositionJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY, Issue 3 2001Benjamin Hatton Alumina/yttria-stablized tetragonal zirconia (Al2O3/TZ3Y) multilayer composites with strong interfaces and containing residual stresses were produced by electrophoretic deposition. As-synthesized and Vickers-indented samples with different layering designs have been tested in bending (up to 1300°C) to experimentally define conditions for crack deflection and flaw tolerance. The compressive residual stress in the Al2O3 layers (,r) is a function of layer thickness (t). It was found that the parameter ,r2t is an effective indicator of the fracture behavior, as predicted by strain energy release calculations. With decreasing ,r2t, the fracture followed a sequence from spontaneous delamination, multistage fracture with extensive crack deflection, to catastrophic failure with, and finally without, deflection steps. Decrease of ,r with increasing test temperature causes changes in fracture behavior which correspond to the room-temperature transitions of ,r2t. [source] In vivo oxygen detection using exogenous hemoglobin as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance microscopyMAGNETIC RESONANCE IN MEDICINE, Issue 4 2003Phillip Z. Sun Abstract In this work we show that exogenous molecular hemoglobin (Hb) is an effective indicator of relative local oxygen tension in magnetic resonance (MR) microscopy studies in vivo. This approach is more sensitive than other MRI oximetry methods; it can be used at higher resolutions and in specimens with no blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) effects. Using injection studies in flies, we show that Hb can permeate through relatively dense neural tissue, and that it is not obviously disruptive to physiology. Hb-injected flies show large changes in signal intensity (40,50%) when external O2 levels are manipulated artificially from 0% to 21%. Oxygen-dependent contrast changes produced by exogenous Hb are detected in T2 -weighted imaging experiments, and can be roughly calibrated if necessary. These studies demonstrate the feasibility of a contrast agent technique that may be useful for functional MRI (fMRI) studies of metabolism at tens of microns resolution. [source] Pyrosequencing of the DNA gyrase gene in Neisseria species: effective indicator of ciprofloxacin resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae,APMIS, Issue 12 2006EMMA LINDBÄCK The quinolone resistance determining region (QRDR) of the gyrA gene in ciprofloxacin-susceptible strains (n=53) and strains of Neisseria spp. with reduced susceptibility (n=70) was determined by the pyrosequencing method. Results showed that the QRDR of the gyrA gene is an effective molecular indicator of resistance to ciprofloxacin in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and presumably in Neisseria meningitidis, but not in all other Neisseria spp. This sequence was not unique for N. gonorrhoeae and seems unsuitable for species verification of N. gonorrhoeae. However, whether it is also possible to use this region for verification depends on the specificity of the primary screening method used. [source] Effects of nitrate nitrogen pollution on Central European unionid bivalves revealed by distributional data and acute toxicity testingAQUATIC CONSERVATION: MARINE AND FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS, Issue 2 2010Karel Douda Abstract 1.Studies from Central Europe have shown a relationship between the impaired population status of threatened freshwater mussel species and elevated nitrate nitrogen (N,NO) concentrations in running waters. 2.Causal mechanisms, however, remain unknown, and no experimental data or comprehensive studies involving more species are available, which causes uncertainty in prioritizing conservation actions. 3.This study uses both descriptive and experimental approaches to identify the effects of nitrates on freshwater mussels and demonstrates the need for integrating different research methods for development of conservation strategies for threatened species. 4.Spatial co-occurrence of five native freshwater mussel species (Anodonta anatina, Pseudanodonta complanata, Unio pictorum, Unio tumidus, Unio crassus) and N,NO concentrations were examined in a 7th-order river catchment (Lu,nice River, Czech Republic) with anthropogenically-induced increasing N,NO levels and declining populations of these species during the 20th century. 5.Acute toxicity of N,NO was then estimated for artificially reared juveniles of A. anatina and U. crassus using both lethal and sublethal test endpoints. 6.Results showed that the probability of occurrence of all species was significantly reduced in reaches with elevated N,NO levels. 7.In contrast, the results of toxicity testing revealed that the juvenile stages of the two tested species were less sensitive to N,NO than most previously tested freshwater macroinvertebrates. The detected 96-h median lethal N,NO concentrations were two orders of magnitude higher than the limits derived from distributional data. 8.Despite the probable absence of a direct negative effect of N,NO on freshwater mussel populations, N,NO has potential to be used as an effective indicator of biotope conditions. Methods:, We serially measured serum concentrations of TNF,, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) and soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) using enzyme immunoassay kits in 10 normal pregnant women and 10 pregnant women who developed PIH late in gestation. Results:, Serum TNF,, sICAM-1 and sE-selectin levels in PIH affected women were significantly higher from the first trimester compared with those in normal pregnancy. sVCAM-1 and sP-selectin levels were not significantly changed. Conclusion:, Serum TNF,, sE-selectin and sICAM-1 levels might be effective indicators of the onset of PIH. [source] |
