Selected AbstractsChemotherapy: the effect of oral cryotherapy on the development of mucositisJOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 6 2005erife Karagözo, lu MSc Aims and objective., The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oral cryotherapy on the development of chemotherapy-induced mucositis in patients administered combined chemotherapy. Background., Mucositis has been of interest to scientists for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, this has not resulted in the development of standard procedures for prevention and management. To cope with this side-effect and to prevent opportunistic infections that may emerge during treatment, attempts are taken to provide preventative and comfort measures. In this context, cryotherapy (oral cooling) has become popular as a cheap and readily applicable method in preventing the developing due the rapid infusion of chemotherapy agents, or decreasing its severity. Design and method., Study involved 60 patients, 30 of whom were in the study group and 30 in the control group. Ice cubes at a size that can be moved easily in the mouth and whose corners have been smoothed in order that they will not cause irritation in the mouth has been used in oral cryotherapy in the study group. Oral chemotherapy was initiated five minutes before chemotherapy and maintained during venous infusions of etoposide (Vepesid®), platinol (Cisplatin®), mitomycin (Mitomycin-C®) and vinblastin (Velbe®) depending on the chemotherapy course. Results., According to Patient-Judged Mucositis Grading, the rate of mucositis is 36.7% in study group and 90.0% in control group, the difference between two groups being statistically significant (P < 0.05). According to Physician-Judged Mucositis Grading, the rate of mucositis is 10.0% in the study group and 50.0% in the control group, the difference between two groups being statistically significant (P < 0.05). Oral pH values decreased in 90% of the subjects in study group, i.e. mucositis risk was reduced whereas oral pH values remained unchanged or decreased in 86.7% of the subjects in the control group, namely mucositis risk increased. The difference between study and control groups in terms of the change in pH values after chemotherapy was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion., Our findings have demonstrated that oral cryotherapy makes an important contribution to the protection of oral health by reducing the mucositis score according to patient- and physician-judged mucositis score and by increasing oral pH values. Relevance to clinical practice., Aggressive cancer therapy places patients at greater risk for oral complications and treatment-related consequences. Unfortunately, prevention and/or treatment of such oral sequelae have often become overlooked as priorities of the treatment team. Effective approaches for the prevention or treatment of oral mucositis have not been standardized, and vary considerably among institutions. Prophylactic measures begin with an increased emphasis on improved oral status. Oral cryotherapy, the therapeutic administration of cold, is a prophylactic measure for oral inflammation. The relevance for clinical practice will be to understand the content of mucositis; comprehensive care should focus on the prevention of this complication in the clinical practice. [source] Geodesic-Controlled Developable Surfaces for Modeling Paper BendingCOMPUTER GRAPHICS FORUM, Issue 3 2007Pengbo Bo Abstract We present a novel and effective method for modeling a developable surface to simulate paper bending in interactive and animation applications. The method exploits the representation of a developable surface as the envelope of rectifying planes of a curve in 3D, which is therefore necessarily a geodesic on the surface. We manipulate the geodesic to provide intuitive shape control for modeling paper bending. Our method ensures a natural continuous isometric deformation from a piece of bent paper to its flat state without any stretching. Test examples show that the new scheme is fast, accurate, and easy to use, thus providing an effective approach to interactive paper bending. We also show how to handle non-convex piecewise smooth developable surfaces. [source] Prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders,DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES RESEARCH REVIEW, Issue 3 2009R. Louise Floyd Abstract Alcohol use among women of childbearing age is a leading, preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities in the United States. Although most women reduce their alcohol use upon pregnancy recognition, some women report drinking during pregnancy and others may continue to drink prior to realizing they are pregnant. These findings emphasize the need for effective prevention strategies for both pregnant and nonpregnant women who might be at risk for an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP). This report reviews evidence supporting alcohol screening and brief intervention as an effective approach to reducing problem drinking and AEPs that can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. In addition, this article highlights a recent report of the National Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effect that describes effective interventions to reduce alcohol use and AEPs, and outlines recommendations on promoting and improving these strategies. Utilizing evidence-based alcohol screening tools and brief counseling for women at risk for an AEP and other effective population-based strategies can help achieve future alcohol-free pregnancies. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source] CB1 receptors: emerging evidence for central and peripheral mechanisms that regulate energy balance, metabolism, and cardiovascular healthDIABETES/METABOLISM: RESEARCH AND REVIEWS, Issue 7 2007Daniela Cota Abstract Insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and obesity are the major cardiometabolic risk factors contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Owing to the increasing prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and CVD, new and effective pharmacologic therapies are urgently needed. In this regard, the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS), a neuromodulatory system involved in the regulation of various aspects of energy balance and eating behaviour through central and peripheral mechanisms, may present the potential to meet this need. In the central nervous system (CNS), cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors and their respective ligands, the endocannabinoids, have a significant role in the modulation of food intake and motivation to consume palatable food. CB1 receptors have also been found in organs involved in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis, such as liver, white adipose tissue, muscle and pancreas. Dysregulation of the ECS has been associated with the development of dyslipidaemia, glucose intolerance, and obesity, and CB1 receptor blockade may have a role in ameliorating these metabolic abnormalities. Thus, pharmacologic options targeting the ECS may provide a novel, effective approach to the prevention and management of CVD, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Sensitive Biomimetic Sensor Based on Molecular Imprinting at Functionalized Indium Tin Oxide ElectrodesELECTROANALYSIS, Issue 16 2007Na Gao Abstract We initially report an electrochemical sensing platform based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) at functionalized Indium Tin Oxide Electrodes (ITO). In this research, aminopropyl-derivatized organosilane aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), which plays the role of functional monomers for template recognition, was firstly self-assembled on an ITO electrode and then dopamine-imprinted sol was spin-coated on the modified surface. APTES which can interact with template dopamine (DA) through hydrogen bonds brought more binding sites located closely to the surface of the ITO electrode, thus made the prepared sensor more sensitive for DA detection. Potential scanning is presented to extract DA from the modified film, thus DA can rapidly and completely leach out. The affinity and selectivity of the resulting biomimetic sensor were characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV). It exhibited an increased affinity for DA over that of structurally related molecules, the anodic current for DA oxidation depended on the concentration of DA in the linear range from 2×10,6 M to 0.8×10,3 M with a correlation coefficient of 0.9927. In contrast, DA-templated film prepared under identical conditions on a bare ITO showed obviously lower response toward dopamine in solution. It should be noted that potential scanning is a very effective approach for DA extraction, and surface modification of the electrochemical transducer with functional monomers is responsible for the development of MIPs-based highly sensitive biomimetic sensor. [source] Proteomic analysis of osteogenic differentiation of dental follicle precursor cellsELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 7 2009Christian Morsczeck Abstract Recently, there has been an increased interest in unravelling the molecular mechanisms and cellular pathways controlling the differentiation and proliferation of human stem cell lines. Proteome analysis has proven to be an effective approach to comprehensive analysis of the regulatory network of differentiation. In the present study we applied 2-DE combined with capillary-LC-MS/MS analysis to profile differentially regulated proteins upon differentiation of dental follicle precursor cells (DFPCs). Out of 115 differentially regulated proteins, glutamine synthetase, lysosomal proteinase cathepsin B proteins, plastin 3 T-isoform, beta-actin, superoxide dismutases, and transgelin were found to be highly up-regulated, whereas cofilin-1, pro-alpha 1 collagen, destrin, prolyl 4-hydrolase and dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase were found to be highly down-regulated. The group of up-regulated proteins is associated with actin-bundling and defence against oxidative cellular stress, whereas down-regulated proteins were associated with collagen biosynthesis. Bioinformatic analyses of the entire data set confirmed these findings that represent significant steps towards the understanding of DFPC differentiation. The bioinformatic analyses suggest that proteins associated with cell cycle progression and protein metabolism were down-regulated and proteins involved in catabolism, cell motility and biological quality were up-regulated. These results display the general physiological state of DFPCs before and after osteogenic differentiation. We also identified regulatory proteins, such as the transcription factors TP53 and Sp-1, associated with the differentiation process. Further studies will investigate the impact of identified regulatory proteins for cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation in DFPCs. [source] Developing limits for driving under cannabisADDICTION, Issue 12 2007Franjo Grotenhermen ABSTRACT Objective Development of a rational and enforceable basis for controlling the impact of cannabis use on traffic safety. Methods An international working group of experts on issues related to drug use and traffic safety evaluated evidence from experimental and epidemiological research and discussed potential approaches to developing per se limits for cannabis. Results In analogy to alcohol, finite (non-zero) per se limits for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in blood appear to be the most effective approach to separating drivers who are impaired by cannabis use from those who are no longer under the influence. Limited epidemiological studies indicate that serum concentrations of THC below 10 ng/ml are not associated with an elevated accident risk. A comparison of meta-analyses of experimental studies on the impairment of driving-relevant skills by alcohol or cannabis suggests that a THC concentration in the serum of 7,10 ng/ml is correlated with an impairment comparable to that caused by a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05%. Thus, a suitable numerical limit for THC in serum may fall in that range. Conclusions This analysis offers an empirical basis for a per se limit for THC that allows identification of drivers impaired by cannabis. The limited epidemiological data render this limit preliminary. [source] IL-6: Regulator of Treg/Th17 balanceEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY, Issue 7 2010Akihiro Kimura Abstract IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in the physiology of virtually every organ system. Recent studies have demonstrated that IL-6 has a very important role in regulating the balance between IL-17-producing Th17 cells and regulatory T cells (Treg). The two T-cell subsets play prominent roles in immune functions: Th17 cell is a key player in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and protection against bacterial infections, while Treg functions to restrain excessive effector T-cell responses. IL-6 induces the development of Th17 cells from naïve T cells together with TGF-,; in contrast, IL-6 inhibits TGF-,-induced Treg differentiation. Dysregulation or overproduction of IL-6 leads to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in which Th17 cells are considered to be the primary cause of pathology. Given the critical role of IL-6 in altering the balance between Treg and Th17 cells, controlling IL-6 activities is potentially an effective approach in the treatment of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Here, we review the role of IL-6 in regulating Th17/Treg balance and describe the critical functions of IL-6 and Th17 in immunity and immune-pathology. Several model systems have been developed that can specifically block IL-6-receptor interactions. Here we present a simple and highly effective approach based on vaccination with a pool of specifically mutated IL-6 analogues to induce a neutralizing IL-6 antibody responsein mice. Judged by the ability of the analogues to bind to heterologous anti-IL-6 antibodies and cellular IL-6 receptors the IL-6 analogues seemed to have a three-dimensional structure comparable to that of wild-type IL-6. Injection of them broke self-tolerance and induced an immune response to IL-6, presumably because of the amino acid differences between the analogues and wild-type IL-6. This resulted in a long-lasting anti-IL-6 antibody-mediated IL-6 deficiency that blocked experimentally induced IL-6-mediated pathology. [source] Helicobacter pylori in familial clusters based on antibody profileFEMS IMMUNOLOGY & MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Bee Ling Ng Abstract Studies have shown a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in close communities and that intrafamilial spread during early childhood may be a route of transmission. A total of 72 household members from 21 families were enrolled in this study. Sera from individuals showed 50/72 (69.4%) seropositive for IgG against H. pylori by ELISA. Western blots showed diversity in the protein profiles with molecular masses ranging from ,8 to 130 kDa. Cohen's , statistical analysis of the blot patterns showed that nine families demonstrated similar profiles (100%), while 4 other families showed varying similarities (17,50%). The results support the hypothesis of intrafamilial transmission of H. pylori. Furthermore, serological studies can be used as an effective approach to determine the familial status in relation to H. pylori infection. [source] Seismic activity triggered by the 1999 Izmit earthquake and its implications for the assessment of future seismic riskGEOPHYSICAL JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL, Issue 1 2001Ali Pinar Summary A serious question has remained as to the location of the western end of the main rupture zone associated with the 1999 Izmit, Turkey, earthquake. A clear answer to this question is extremely important for the assessment of future seismic risk in the eastern Marmara Sea region, Turkey. In this paper we show an effective approach to answering this important question, unifying different kinds of information such as seismic activity, focal mechanism solutions and stress changes caused by the main shock into a clear image. We first point out that the major moment release is 1.6 × 1020 N m and covered the area between 29.7°E and 30.5°E and we then claim that the enhanced seismic activity after the main shock in the eastern Marmara Sea region should be regarded as activity triggered by the increase of stress, rather than as aftershock activity along the ruptured zone. We propose three fault segments with an average stress increase on each in the western extension of the main-shock rupture zone as potential sites for future large earthquakes, namely (i) the 50 km long Yalova,Hersek segment (0.45 MPa), (ii) the NW,SE-trending right-lateral strike-slip fault known as the Princes Islands segment (0.18 MPa), and (iii) the Çinarcik,Yalova segment (0.09 MPa) characterized by normal faulting, which was subject to rupture in 1963. [source] Cross-species amplification of Lolium microsatellites in Poa sspGRASSLAND SCIENCE, Issue 3 2006Bryan Kindiger Abstract Cross-species amplification of 47 Lolium ssp. microsatellite primers were evaluated across eight Poa species or subspecies. Of the 47 evaluated Lolium simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs examined, 18 generated one or more amplification products. Of these, only two resulted in the identification of Poa ssp. microsatellite motifs, of which only one was complementary to the microsatellite motif identified in Lolium. Though few Poa ssp. microsatellite regions were identified, several of the amplification products were polymorphic within and across the Poa ssp. and could be utilized as markers in Poa ssp. intergeneric hybrid studies. Results of the research suggest the use of Lolium microsatellite derived primers to identify complementary SSR regions in Poa is not an effective approach for the development of microsatellite markers in Poa. [source] Canadian multi-institutional survey of immune tolerance therapy (ITT) , experience with the use of recombinant factor VIII for ITTHAEMOPHILIA, Issue 1 2006C. BARNES Summary., Immune tolerance therapy (ITT) is currently the most effective approach to eradicate inhibitors in patients with haemophilia A. Limited evidence suggests that the use of plasma-derived factor VIII (pdFVIII) for ITT may be associated with a greater success rate than recombinant factor VIII (rFVIII). Analysis of ITT cases in Canada offered the opportunity to examine the success rate of using rFVIII for ITT, as rFVIII has been used almost exclusively for Canadian haemophilia A patients since 1994. The results of 32 patients from five haemophilia treatment centres were collated. Three patients continue on ITT. Of the 29 patients who completed ITT, 25 (86.2%) used rFVIII exclusively, and four used pdFVIII exclusively or pdFVIII followed by rFVIII. The initial FVIII dosing frequency was once per day in 72.4% of patients at an average dose of 98 U kg,1 (range 50,200). Eight patients (25%) received one or more adjuvant therapies. The median duration of ITT was 1.1 years (mean 1.5 years, range 9 days to 6 years). The overall success rate of the 29 patients who completed ITT was 79.3% (23/29), which is comparable with the results of immune tolerance registries. Our results suggest that the success rate of ITT using rFVIII is not inferior to the results with pdFVIII. [source] Prophylactic recombinant factor VIIa in haemophilia patients with inhibitorsHAEMOPHILIA, Issue 3 2005G. Young Summary., Prevention of bleeding, especially into joints, with prophylactic factor infusions is the most effective treatment for severe haemophilia patients. Approximately 15,30% of patients with factor VIII deficiency and 3,5% of patients with factor IX deficiency develop neutralizing antibodies (inhibitors) to factor precluding their use. Such patients often have significant bleeding complications including life- and limb-threatening bleeds and severe joint disease. Prophylaxis for such patients is not generally considered because of the fact that the standard (bypassing) agents for such patients are not as effective as natural factor replacement, because of concerns for thrombotic complications and also because of the very high cost of bypassing agents. We treated two patients with high titre inhibitors with prophylactic recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa). The first patient was treated as a result of development of a target joint and to reduce the use of agents that can lead to anamnesis of his inhibitor. The second patient had multiple severe bleeds and was hospitalized 20% of the time over a 2-year period. He had a very poor quality of life. Both patients had shown good responses previously to rFVIIa for treatment of bleeds. Both patients had an outstanding response to prophylaxis albeit at a very high cost. Prophylaxis with rFVIIa can be an effective approach in select inhibitor patients with severe complications related to bleeding. [source] Public perceptions about low back pain and its management: a gap between expectations and reality?HEALTH EXPECTATIONS, Issue 3 2000Jennifer A. Klaber Moffett PhD MSc MCSP Objective To compare public perceptions and patient perceptions about back pain and its management with current clinical guidelines. Design A survey using a quota sampling technique. Setting On-the-street in South Derbyshire in the UK. Subjects 507 members of the general population aged between 20 and 60 years, including a representative subsample of 40% who had experienced back pain in the previous year. Survey To test knowledge and perceptions of back pain and its best management using statements based on The Back Book which was produced in conjunction with the Royal College of General Practitioners and based on best available evidence. In addition expectations of back pain management and outcome were investigated. Results Forty percent of this sample had experienced back pain during the previous year, more than half of whom had consulted their GP. More than half believed the spine is one of the strongest part of the body, but nearly two thirds incorrectly believed that back pain is often due to a slipped disc or trapped nerve. Two thirds expected a GP to be able to tell them exactly what was wrong with their back, although slightly fewer among those who had consulted. Most expected to have an X-ray, especially if they had consulted. Most recognised that the most important thing a GP can do is offer reassurance and advice. The responses were not related to age, gender or social class. Those who had consulted appeared to have slightly more misconceptions: this could be partly due to people with more severe problems or more misconceptions being more likely to consult, but also suggests either that GPs are still giving inaccurate information or at least failing to correct these misconceptions. Conclusions The problem of managing back pain might be reduced by closing the gap between the public's expectations and what is recommended in the guidelines through the promotion of appropriate health education messages. Further professional education of GPs also appears to be needed to update them in the most effective approach to managing back pain. [source] Developing a general practice library: a collaborative project between a GP and librarianHEALTH INFORMATION & LIBRARIES JOURNAL, Issue 4 2001David Pearson The authors report on a self-completed questionnaire study from a North Yorkshire based general practice regarding the information needs of its clinicians. The work was carried out with a particular focus on the practice library, and the findings identified that a new approach to maintaining and developing the library was needed. The literature regarding the information needs of primary care clinicians and the role of practice libraries is considered, and compared to those of the clinicians at the practice. Discussion follows on how a collaborative project was set up between the practice and a librarian based at the local NHS Trust library in order to improve the existing practice library. Difficulties encountered and issues unique to the project are explored, including training implications presented by the implementation of electronic resources. Marketing activities implemented are discussed, how the library will operate in its new capacity, and how ongoing support and maintenance of the library will be carried out. It is concluded that although scepticism still exists regarding librarian involvement in practice libraries, collaboration between clinicians and librarians is an effective approach to the successful development and maintenance of a practice library, and recommendations are therefore made for similar collaborative work. [source] Efficient hepatocyte engraftment and long-term transgene expression after reversible portal embolization in nonhuman primates,HEPATOLOGY, Issue 3 2009Ibrahim Dagher The feasibility of ex vivo gene therapy as an alternative to liver transplantation for the treatment of liver metabolic diseases needs to be analyzed in large animal models. This approach requires appropriate gene transfer vectors and effective hepatocyte engraftment. Lentiviral vectors have the ability to transduce nondividing differentiated cells, such as hepatocytes, and portal vein occlusion increases hepatocyte engraftment. We investigated whether reversible portal vein embolization combined with ex vivo lentivirus-mediated gene transfer is an effective approach for successful hepatocyte engraftment in nonhuman primates and whether the transgene remains expressed in the long term in transplanted hepatocytes in situ. Simian hepatocytes were isolated after left lobe resection, and the left and right anterior portal branches of animals were embolized with absorbable material. Isolated hepatocytes were labeled with Hoechst dye or transduced in suspension with lentiviruses expressing green fluorescent protein under the control of the human apolipoprotein A-II promoter and transplanted via the inferior mesenteric vein. The whole procedure was well tolerated. The embolized liver was revascularized within 2 weeks. The volume of nonembolized liver increased from 38.7% ± 0.8% before embolization to 55.9% ± 1% after embolization and hepatocytes significantly proliferated (10.5% ± 0.4% on day 3 after embolization). Liver repopulation after transplantation with Hoechst-labeled hepatocytes was 7.4% ± 1.2%. Liver repopulation was 2.1% ± 0.2% with transduced hepatocytes, a proportion similar to that obtained with Hoechst-labeled cells, given that the mean transduction efficacy of simian hepatocyte population was 34%. Transgene expression persisted at 16 weeks after transplantation. Conclusion: We have developed a new approach to improve hepatocyte engraftment and to express a transgene in the long term in nonhuman primates. [source] Avian influenza surveillance in wild birds in the European Union in 2006INFLUENZA AND OTHER RESPIRATORY VIRUSES, Issue 1 2009Uta Hesterberg Abstract Background, Infections of wild birds with highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) subtype H5N1 virus were reported for the first time in the European Union in 2006. Objectives, To capture epidemiological information on H5N1 HPAI in wild bird populations through large-scale surveillance and extensive data collection. Methods, Records were analysed at bird level to explore the epidemiology of AI with regard to species of wild birds involved, timing and location of infections as well as the applicability of different surveillance types for the detection of infections. Results, In total, 120,706 records of birds were sent to the Community Reference Laboratory for analysis. Incidents of H5N1 HPAI in wild birds were detected in 14 EU Member States during 2006. All of these incidents occurred between February and May, with the exception of two single cases during the summer months in Germany and Spain. Conclusions, For the detection of H5N1 HPAI virus, passive surveillance of dead or diseased birds appeared the most effective approach, whilst active surveillance offered better detection of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses. No carrier species for H5N1 HPAI virus could be identified and almost all birds infected with H5N1 HPAI virus were either dead or showed clinical signs. A very large number of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were tested in 2006 and while a high proportion of LPAI infections were found in this species, H5N1 HPAI virus was rarely identified in these birds. Orders of species that appeared to be very clinically susceptible to H5N1 HPAI virus were swans, diving ducks, mergansers and grebes, supporting experimental evidence. Surveillance results indicate that H5N1 HPAI virus did not establish itself successfully in the EU wild bird population in 2006. [source] Two-dimensional modeling for stability analysis of two-phase stratified flowINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN FLUIDS, Issue 7 2010Ghassem Heidarinejad Abstract The effect of wavelength and relative velocity on the disturbed interface of two-phase stratified regime is modeled and discussed. To analyze the stability, a small perturbation is imposed on the interface. Growth or decline of the disturbed wave, relative velocity, and surface tension with respect to time will be discussed numerically. Newly developed scheme applied to a two-dimensional flow field and the governing Navier,Stokes equations in laminar regime are solved. Finite volume method together with non-staggered curvilinear grid is a very effective approach to capture interface shape with time. Because of the interface shape, for any time advancement, a new grid is performed separately on each stratified field, liquid, and gas regime. The results are compared with the analytical characteristics method and one-dimensional modeling. This comparison shows that solving the momentum equation including viscosity term leads to physically more realistic results. In addition, the newly developed method is capable of predicting two-phase stratified flow behavior more precisely than one-dimensional modeling. [source] A hybrid immersed boundary and material point method for simulating 3D fluid,structure interaction problemsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN FLUIDS, Issue 12 2008Anvar Gilmanov Abstract A numerical method is developed for solving the 3D, unsteady, incompressible Navier,Stokes equations in curvilinear coordinates containing immersed boundaries (IBs) of arbitrary geometrical complexity moving and deforming under forces acting on the body. Since simulations of flow in complex geometries with deformable surfaces require special treatment, the present approach combines a hybrid immersed boundary method (HIBM) for handling complex moving boundaries and a material point method (MPM) for resolving structural stresses and movement. This combined HIBM & MPM approach is presented as an effective approach for solving fluid,structure interaction (FSI) problems. In the HIBM, a curvilinear grid is defined and the variable values at grid points adjacent to a boundary are forced or interpolated to satisfy the boundary conditions. The MPM is used for solving the equations of solid structure and communicates with the fluid through appropriate interface-boundary conditions. The governing flow equations are discretized on a non-staggered grid layout using second-order accurate finite-difference formulas. The discrete equations are integrated in time via a second-order accurate dual time stepping, artificial compressibility scheme. Unstructured, triangular meshes are employed to discretize the complex surface of the IBs. The nodes of the surface mesh constitute a set of Lagrangian control points used for tracking the motion of the flexible body. The equations of the solid body are integrated in time via the MPM. At every instant in time, the influence of the body on the flow is accounted for by applying boundary conditions at stationary curvilinear grid nodes located in the exterior but in the immediate vicinity of the body by reconstructing the solution along the local normal to the body surface. The influence of the fluid on the body is defined through pressure and shear stresses acting on the surface of the body. The HIBM & MPM approach is validated for FSI problems by solving for a falling rigid and flexible sphere in a fluid-filled channel. The behavior of a capsule in a shear flow was also examined. Studies have shown that more than 60% of patients with hypertension will require two or more drugs to achieve current treatment targets. Discussion:, Combination therapy is recommended as first-line treatment by the JNC-7 guidelines for patients with a blood pressure > 20 mmHg above the systolic goal or 10 mmHg above the diastolic goal, while the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks recommends combination therapy when BP exceeds targets by > 15/10 mmHg. Current European Society of Hypertension-European Society of Cardiology guidelines also recommend the use of low-dose combination therapy in the first-line setting. Furthermore, JNC-7 recommends that a thiazide-type diuretic should be part of initial first-line combination therapy. Thiazide/diuretic combinations are available for a variety of classes of antihypertensive, including ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), beta blockers and centrally acting agents. The mechanical properties and surface structure of the film were also examined. Cells of L. monocytogenes were reduced by 2.1, 4.5 and 3.7 log units mL,1 by the pectin plus PLA (pectin/PLA) film containing nisin (1000 IU mL,1 of tested liquid) in Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth, liquid egg white and orange juice, respectively, after 48 h at 24 °C. Pectin played an important roll in embedding nisin into the film. The pectin/PLA film had a similar stiffness but lower tensile strength, elongation and fracture energy than the pure PLA film. These data suggested that nisin incorporated into the pectin/PLA film was an effective approach to reducing L. monocytogenes in a typical growth medium (e.g. BHI broth) as well as in foods (e.g. orange juice and liquid egg). Method., Guided by published literature on using the Internet for data collection, an online protocol was developed; this included construction of a website, development of a homepage and interactive HyperText Markup Language pages and the posting of the study link on various websites. Data collection occurred over a 6-month period between December 2005 and May 2006. Findings., Despite using strategies in conducting online research cited in published literature, the recruitment of subjects was very prolonged and the volume of missing data among many respondents excluded them from the study and created bias within the study's results. This hampers their control. We used, for the first time, a stable isotope approach to assess dispersal of adult Agriotes obscurus in arable land. 2,After a diet switch from a C3- to a C4-plant, carbon isotope ratios of A. obscurus larvae significantly changed towards the isotopic signature of the new diet. Moreover, the larval ,13C signatures were transferred to the wing covers of the adult beetles with little distortion. 3,To assess the dispersal abilities under natural conditions, pheromone traps, lured for Agriotes sp., were installed at two study sites in Western Austria. Each site comprised a maize field (= C4-plant) and adjacent C3-grasslands with traps established along a transect of increasing distance to the maize. 4,,13C signatures of wing covers revealed that adult male A. obscurus were able to migrate at least 80 m, which was the maximum distance that dispersal could be traced in the present study. The dispersal behaviour might have been influenced by site-specific factors. 5,The results obtained demonstrate a higher potential of adult male Agriotes to disperse than previously assumed. Moreover, the combination of pheromone trapping and stable isotope analysis proved to be an effective approach to study insect movement and dispersal in arable systems harbouring C3- and C4-crops.
