Mesozoic,Paleogene sedimentary facies and paleogeography of Tibet, western China: tectonic implications

Abstract In Early,Middle Triassic time, an abyssal sea covered most of the Songpan,Ganzi area, whereas a Central Tibetan Landmass, up to 400,km wide, may have stretched across the Lhasa and Western Qiangtang terrains. In Late Triassic time, the Songpan,Ganzi sea closed, the Central Tibetan Landmass receded westwards away from southern Western Qiangtang, a littoral environment dominated Eastern Qiangtang, middle Western Qiangtang, and southeastern Lhasa, a shelf environment existed only in northern and southeastern Western Qiangtang and northwestern Eastern Qiangtang, and abyssal flysch was spread along the eastern Bangonghu,Nüjiang zone. In Early,Middle Jurassic time, Songpan,Ganzi had become part of the Eurasian continent, abyssal flysch sediments stretched throughout the Bangonghu,Nüjiang zone, the Central Tibetan Landmass was only locally present in southwestern Lhasa, and the Tethyan epicontinental sea nearly covered all Tibet southwest of the Jinsajiang suture. In Late Jurassic time, oceanic flysch deposition existed only along the westernmost Bangonghu,Nüjiang zone, nearly all of Tibet was covered by coastal deposits, and shelf deposits existed only in northern Western Qiangtang and westernmost Lhasa. In the early stage of Early Cretaceous time, the majority of Qiangtang had become dry land, and a supralittoral environment dominated across the entire Lhasa terrain. However, during the late stage of the Early Cretaceous time, platform,shelf carbonates prevailed on southern Western Qiangtang and northern Lhasa. In Late Cretaceous time, the majority of Qiangtang had become emergent land, and a supratidal environment dominated Lhasa, the western rim of Western Qiangtang, and Tarim. In Paleogene time, the majority of Tibet became emergent land, and a supratidal environment existed only on the southern and western rims. The dominance of Upper Triassic,Jurassic shelf carbonates on the northwestern Eastern Qiangtang corner and the northern Western Qiangtang rim suggests a diachronous closing of the Jinsajiang paleo-Tethys ocean, first during latest Triassic time when the Eastern Qiangtang terrain collided with Asia and finally in Jurassic time when the Western Qiangtang terrain was amalgamated to Asia. Rich picotites in Upper Triassic sandstones of middle Qiangtang suggest that the Shuanghu suture could have extended along the middle of Qiangtang, and stable shelf sedimentation during Late Triassic,Middle Jurassic time in the Western Qiangtang terrain shows that the suture probably could not have formed until Middle Jurassic time. The opening time of the Bangonghu,Nüjiang mid-Tethys ocean could be Late Triassic time due to the existence of the Central Tibetan Landmass across Western Qiangtang and Lhasa during Early,Middle Triassic time. However, its opening was diachronous, at Late Triassic time in the east and at Early,Middle Jurassic time in the west. Furthermore, its closing was also diachronous, first in the east at the beginning of Late Jurassic time and later in the west in latest Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous time. Widespread upper Lower Cretaceous limestone up to 5,km thick over the northern half of Lhasa indicates that southern Tibet could have undergone an extensive backarc subsidence during late Early Cretaceous time. Continuous shallow marine sedimentation through the entire Cretaceous time over much of southern Tibet indicates that southern Tibet was intensely elevated only after the end of Paleogene time, its high topography being the product of the Indo-Asian collision. Leaf litter nitrogen concentration as related to climatic factors in Eurasian forests

ABSTRACT Aim, The aim of this study is to determine the patterns of nitrogen (N) concentrations in leaf litter of forest trees as functions of climatic factors, annual average temperature (Temp, °C) and annual precipitation (Precip, dm) and of forest type (coniferous vs. broadleaf, deciduous vs. evergreen, Pinus, etc.). Location, The review was conducted using data from studies across the Eurasian continent. Methods, Leaf litter N concentration was compiled from 204 sets of published data (81 sets from coniferous and 123 from broadleaf forests in Eurasia). We explored the relationships between leaf litter N concentration and Temp and Precip by means of regression analysis. Leaf litter data from N2 -fixing species were excluded from the analysis. Results, Over the Eurasian continent, leaf litter N concentration increased with increasing Temp and Precip within functional groups such as conifers, broadleaf, deciduous, evergreen and the genus Pinus. There were highly significant linear relationships between ln(N) and Temp and Precip (P < 0.001) for all available data combined, as well as for coniferous trees, broadleaf trees, deciduous trees, evergreen trees and Pinus separately. With both Temp and Precip as independent variables in multiple regression equations, the adjusted coefficient of determination () was evidently higher than in simple regressions with either Temp or Precip as independent variable. Standardized regression coefficients showed that Temp had a larger impact than Precip on litter N concentration for all groups except evergreens. The impact of temperature was particularly strong for Pinus. Conclusions, The relationship between leaf litter N concentration and temperature and precipitation can be well described with simple or multiple linear regression equations for forests over Eurasia. In the context of global warming, these regression equations are useful for a better understanding and modelling of the effects of geographical and climatic factors on leaf litter N at a regional and continental scale. Spring northward retreat of Eurasian snow cover relevant to seasonal and interannual variations of atmospheric circulation

Abstract An observational study is made of the seasonal and interannual variations of spring snow-disappearance over the Eurasian continent and the circulation mechanisms causing those variations. The spring northward retreat of the snow boundary over the East European Plain (EEP) between 30 and 60° E is faster (0.4° per day) than to the east of the Ural Mountain range (0.3° per day). These migrations of the snow boundary lag behind the appearance of the surface air temperature 0 °C by about 1 to 5 pentads. The analyses of the atmospheric heat and moisture budgets showed that the seasonal intrusion of warm air associated with southwesterly winds is primarily responsible for the rapid snowmelt in March and April over the EEP. In addition, the adiabatic heating of descending air plays a secondary role in the snowmelt in mid-March. On an interannual time scale, horizontal warm advection also plays an essential role in the spring northward retreat of snow cover extent. The present study confirms the previous finding that the surface air temperature anomalies, produced during the seasonal snow-disappearance period, diminished in May, suggesting a weak dynamical linkage between the EEP snow cover and Asian summer monsoon. Regional differences in craniofacial diversity and the population history of Jomon Japan

Abstract The people associated with the Jomon culture, the Neolithic inhabitants of Japan, are one of the key groups in the population history of East Asia, because they retain many archaic characters that may be traced back to Eurasian Upper Palaeolithic hunter,gatherers. In this study, the regional diversity of the Jomon skeletal series was estimated by applying the R-matrix method to 34 craniofacial measurements. The patterns of intraregional variation indicate little effect on the genetic structure of the Jomon from long-term gene flow stemming from an outside source. The regional diversities were further estimated by pooling all individuals into regional aggregates, and by computing the mean variance within local groups in each region. Although the pattern of phenotypic variation differs depending on the unit of analysis, the gradient of the diversity retains its identity. The Hokkaido region, the northernmost part of the Japanese archipelago, has the highest variance, followed by the regions of eastern Japan, while the southwestern regions have the lowest variance. These findings suggest that the Jomon ancestors of the northern part of Japan might have expanded southward to Honshu Island. Global analyses including samples from Eurasia, Africa, and Australia dating roughly to the same chronological periods as those of the Jomon samples, indicate that the Jomon cranial series share part of their ancestral gene pool with early northeastern Asians. The present findings support the archeologically suggested population growth and expansion in the northern half of the Eurasian continent during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene periods. Mid,Cretaceous Episodic Magmatism and Tin Mineralization in Khingan-Okhotsk Volcano,Plutonic Belt, Far East Russia

Abstract: Age of magmatism and tin mineralization in the Khingan-Okhotsk volcano,plutonic belt, including the Khingan, Badzhal and Komsomolsk tin fields, were reviewed in terms of tectonic history of the continental margin of East Asia. This belt consists mainly of felsic volcanic rocks and granitoids of the reduced type, being free of remarkable geomagnetic anomaly, in contrast with the northern Sikhote-Alin volcano,plutonic belt dominated by oxidized-type rocks and gold mineralization. The northern end of the Khingan-Okhotsk belt near the Sea of Okhotsk, accompanied by positive geomagnetic anomalies, may have been overprinted by magmatism of the Sikhote-Alin belt. Tin,associated magmatism in the Khingan-Okhotsk belt extending over 400 km occurred episodically in a short period (9510 Ma) in the middle Cretaceous time, which is coeval with the accretion of the Kiselevka-Manoma complex, the youngest accretionary wedge in the eastern margin of the Khingan-Okhotsk accretionary terranes. The episodic magmatism is in contrast with the Cretaceous-Paleogene long,lasted magmatism in Sikhote,Alin, indicating the two belts are essentially different arcs, rather than juxtaposed arcs derived from a single arc. The tin-associated magmatism may have been caused by the subduction of a young and hot back-arc basin, which is inferred from oceanic plate stratigraphy of the coeval accre-tionary complex and its heavy mineral assemblage of immature volcanic arc provenance. The subduction of the young basin may have resulted in dominance of the reduced-type felsic magmas due to incorporation of carbonaceous sediments within the accretionary complex near the trench. Subsequently, the back-arc basin may have been closed by the oblique collision of the accretionary terranes in Sikhote,Alin, which was subjected to the Late Cretaceous to Paleogene magmatism related to another younger subduction system. These processes could have proceeded under transpressional tectonic regime due to oblique subduction of the paleo-Pacific plates under Eurasian continent. [source]


Comparisons of age, growth, and maturity between male and female, and diploid and triploid individuals in Carassius auratus from Okinawa-jima Island, Japan

Abstract 1.Carassius auratus, a primary freshwater fish with bisexual diploid and unisexual gynogenetic triploid lineages, is distributed widely in and around the Eurasian continent and is especially common in East Asia. East Asian C. auratus diverged genetically to form local endemic populations in different regions, and those distributed in the Ryukyu Archipelago form a local endemic population that can be regarded as an evolutionarily significant unit because of its high phylogenetic independence and evolutionary distinctiveness. Although the evolutionary uniqueness of this population should be conserved, its distribution area and population size are decreasing rapidly, and some island populations are currently considered endangered or already extinct. 2.To develop effective conservation measures to stop the current decline of Ryukyuan C. auratus, ecological data need to be collected. In this study, life history data for a C. auratus population distributed in the Hiji River system were collected by estimating age, growth, and spawning season. 3.The spawning season of C. auratus in the Hiji River extended from March to September, peaking during March,May. Females became sexually mature in their second year, but males reached maturity and were able to spawn as early as in the late spawning season of their year of hatching. Once having reached sexual maturity, males probably continuously stay ripe throughout their life. 4.Sagittal otoliths of C. auratus proved to be useful ageing structures because one annual increment is formed on the sagittal otolith before the spawning season in each year. The oldest fish observed were a 10-year-old female and an 11-year-old male. Females showed faster somatic growth and higher final standard length than males, and a sexual size dimorphism was observed. 5.The standard length at each age class did not differ between diploid and triploid C. auratus, suggesting that triploid growth rates were almost equal to those of diploids. Effect of ENSO on the Hong Kong winter season

Abstract The relationship between the ENSO condition and the winter condition in Hong Kong is investigated in this study. The winter monsoon over southern China tends to be weaker (stronger) during El Niño (La Niña) winters and Hong Kong tends to have higher (lower) mean winter temperatures against the background of the warming trend. On the other hand, there are more (fewer) surge events, which represents the southeastward advance of the Siberian cold air across the East Asian coast, affecting Hong Kong. Analyses showed that Hong Kong tends to be warmer with a shorter duration for the longest cold spell during the winter without blocking event over the Eurasian continent. Surface Rupture and Co-seismic Displacement Produced by the Ms 8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake of May 12th, 2008, Sichuan, China: Eastwards Growth of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract An earthquake of Ms 8 struck Wenchuan County, western Sichuan, China, on May 12th, 2008 and resulted in long surface ruptures (>300 km). The first-hand observations about the surface ruptures produced by the earthquake in the worst-hit areas of Yingxiu, Beichuan and Qingchuan, ascertained that the causative structure of the earthquake was in the central fault zones of the Longmenshan tectonic belt. Average co-seismic vertical displacements along the individual fault of the Yingxiu-Beichuan rupture zone reach 2.5-4 m and the cumulative vertical displacements across the central and frontal Longmenshan fault belt is about 5,6 m. The surface rupture strength was reduced from north of Beichuan to Qingchuan County and shows 2,3 m dextral strike-slip component. The Wenchuan thrust-faulting earthquake is a manifestation of eastward growth of the Tibetan Plateau under the action of continuous convergence of the Indian and Eurasian continents. [source]
