CHARACTERISTIC INTRADUCTAL ULTRASONOGRAPHIC FEATURES OF PORTAL BILIOPATHY

The term ,portal biliopathy' is used to describe cholangiographic abnormalities seen in patients with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction. Portal biliopathy is mainly composed of extrinsic compression of the bile duct caused by enlarged venous collaterals. Herein we report a case of asymptomatic portal biliopathy caused by idiopathic extrahepatic portal vein obstruction. In the present case, intraductal ultrasonography showed normal anatomic layers of the distal common bile duct wall, surrounded by numerous tubular structures which were suspected to be collateral vessels. We suggest that intraductal ultrasonography may be a helpful imaging procedure for detection of this pathological condition. [source]


INTRADUCTAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY FOR THE STAGING OF BILE DUCT CARCINOMA

Intraductal ultrasonography is useful in the staging of extrahepatic bile duct cancer including tumor depth infiltration, pancreatic parenchymal invasion, portal vein invasion, and right hepatic artery invasion. However, it has limitations in assessing lymph node metastases. The assessment of longitudinal cancer extension along the bile duct is a promising aspect of this area. However, a thickening of the bile duct wall may represent either inflammatory changes that may result from mechanical irritation by a biliary drainage catheter or other factors, or the longitudinal extension of the cancer. Summary The 3-D gradient-echo (GRE) sequence allows thinner sections and better resolution of biliary obstruction. When the presence of biliary obstruction is identified using magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, the addition of the 3-D GRE sequence may be helpful for diagnosing biliary obstruction. By showing the changes in the bile duct wall, within the duct lumen and around the bile duct, this technique can be helpful for distinguishing benign from malignant stricture as well as a stone from an enhancing intraluminal mass. Numerical study of solid particle erosion on the tubes near the side walls in a duct with flow past an aligned tube bank

Abstract Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) tool has been applied to investigate the erosion of duct walls and that of tubers (10 × 10 aligned tube bank in the duct) near side walls, which is caused by coal ash particle impaction. The flow field is obtained by using direct numerical simulation (DNS) method. The coupling between tubes and flows are made through the immersed boundary technique. Particles are tracked by using Lagrangian approach and further coupled with gas phase. Four coal ash particles are considered 6.2, 20, 80, and 200 ,m. In the end, the erosion of the duct walls and that of the tubes near side walls has been well predicted and characterized. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010 [source]
