A review of charge transport and recombination in polymer/fullerene organic solar cells

PROGRESS IN PHOTOVOLTAICS: RESEARCH & APPLICATIONS, Issue 8 2007
A. Pivrikas
Abstract The charge carrier transport and recombination in two types of thermally treated bulk-heterojunction solar cells is reviewed: in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RRP3HT) mixed with 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-[6,6]-methanofullerene (PCBM) and in the blend of poly[2-methoxy-5-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)-phenylene vinylene] (MDMO-PPV) mixed with PCBM. The charge carrier mobility and bimolecular recombination coefficient have been comparatively studied by using various techniques including Time-of-Flight (ToF), Charge Extraction by Linearly Increasing Voltage (CELIV), Double Injection (DI) transients, Current,Voltage (I,V) technique. It was found that the carrier mobility is at least an order of magnitude higher in RRP3HT/PCBM blends compared to MDMO-PPV/PCBM. Moreover, all used techniques demonstrate a heavily reduced charge carrier recombination in RRP3HT/PCBM films compared to Langevin-type carrier bimolecular recombination in MDMO-PPV/PCBM blends. As a result of long carrier lifetimes the formation of high carrier concentration plasma in RRP3HT/PCBM blends is demonstrated and plasma extraction methods were used to directly estimate the charge carrier mobility and bimolecular recombination coefficients simultaneously. A weak dependence of bimolecular recombination coefficient on the applied electric field and temperature demonstrates that carrier recombination is not dominated by charge carrier mobility (Langevin-type recombination) in RRP3HT/PCBM blends. Furthermore, we found from CELIV techniques that electron mobility in RRP3HT/PCBM blends is independent on relaxation time in the experimental time window (approx. hundreds of microseconds to tens of milliseconds). This reduced carrier bimolecular recombination in RRP3HT/PCBM blends implies that the much longer carrier lifetimes can be reached at the same concentrations which finally results in higher photocurrent and larger power conversion efficiency of RRP3HT/PCBM solar cells. Symmetric synaptic patterns between starburst amacrine cells and direction selective ganglion cells in the rabbit retina

Yung-Cheng Chen
Abstract Inputs from starburst amacrine cells (SACs) to ON-OFF direction selective ganglion cells (DSGCs) in the rabbit retina are themselves directional. However, the synaptic asymmetry between SACs and DSGCs required for generating direction selectivity has been controversial. We investigated dendritic contacts and distribution of inhibitory synapses between SACs and their overlapped DSGCs. Double injection of SAC/DSGC pairs and quantitative analysis revealed no obvious asymmetry of dendritic contacts between SACs and DSGCs. Furthermore, examination of the inhibitory input pattern on the dendrites of DSGCs using antibodies against GABAA receptors also suggested an isotropic arrangement with the overlapping SACs in both the preferred and the null directions. Therefore, the presynaptic mechanism of direction selectivity upon DSGCs may not result from a simple asymmetric arrangement with overlapping SACs. Multiple layer interactions and sophisticated synaptic connections between SACs and DSGCs are necessary. J. Comp. Neurol. 508:175,183, 2008. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]

Injection-Salting of pre rigor Fillets of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 1 2007

ABSTRACT:, The effects of temperature (,1, 4, and 10 °C), brine concentration (12% and 25% NaCl), injection volumes, and needle densities were investigated on fillet weight gain (%), salt content (%), fillet contraction (%), and muscle gaping in pre rigor brine-injected fillets of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Increased brine concentration (12% to 25%) significantly increased the initial (< 5 min after injection) and final contraction (24 h after injection) of pre rigor fillets. Increased brine concentration significantly reduced weight gain and increased salt content but had no significant effect on muscle gaping. The temperatures tested did not significantly affect weight gain, fillet contraction, or gaping score. Significant regressions (P < 0.01) between the injection volume and weight gain (range: 2.5% to 15.5%) and salt content (range: 1.7% to 6.5%) were observed for injections of pre rigor fillets. Double injections significantly increased the weight gain and salt content compared to single injections. Initial fillet contraction measured 30 min after brine injection increased significantly (P < 0.01) with increasing brine injection volume but no significant difference in the fillet contraction was observed 12 h after brine injection (range: 7.9% to 8.9%). Brine-injected post rigor control fillets obtained higher weight gain, higher salt content, more muscle gaping, and significantly lower fillet contraction compared to the pre rigor injected fillets. Injection-salting is an applicable technology as a means to obtain satisfactory salt contents and homogenously distribute the salt into the muscle of pre rigor fillets of Atlantic salmon before further processing steps such as drying and smoking. Low sensitivity of retina to AMPA-induced calcification

JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH, Issue 4 2003

Abstract Glutamate is involved in most CNS neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, retinal diseases such as retinal ischemia, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy are associated with an excessive synaptic concentration of this neurotransmitter. To gain more insight into retinal excitotoxicity, we carried out a dose, response study in adult rats using ,-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid (AMPA), a glutamate analogue. AMPA intraocular injections (between 0.27 and 10.8 nmol) caused no morphologic modification, but a 10.8 + 21 nmol double injection in a 10-day interval produced a lesion characterized by discrete neuronal loss, astroglial and microglial reactions, and calcium precipitation. Abundant calcium deposits similar to those present in rat and human brain excitotoxicity or hypoxia-ischemia neurodegeneration were detected by alizarin red staining within the retinal surface and the optic nerve. Glial reactivity, associated normally with astrocytes in the nerve fiber, was assessed in Müller cells. GABA immunoreactivity was detected not only in neuronal elements but also in Müller cells. In contrast to the high vulnerability of the brain to excitotoxin microinjection, AMPA-induced retinal neurodegeneration may provide a useful model of low central nervous system sensitivity to excitotoxicity. © 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
