    Pregnancy and lactation have anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects in Ay/a mice

    Abstract Aim:, Dominant ,yellow' mutation at the mouse agouti locus (Ay) results in obesity. Pregnancy and lactation are characterized by large energy demand. The aim of this study was to investigate whether obesity would develop in pregnant and suckling Ay mice. Methods:, Body weight and food intake in pregnancy, lactation, and after weaning, plasma leptin, insulin, corticosterone and blood glucose concentrations on days 7, 13 and 18 of pregnancy, days 1, 10, 21 and 80 postpartum, glucose and insulin tolerance on pregnancy days 7 and 18 were measured in C57Bl/6J mice of a/a (normal metabolism) and Ay/a genotypes. The same parameters were also measured in age-matched virgin females. Results:, Virgin Ay/a females exhibited hyperphagia, enhanced body weight, glucose intolerance and normal blood parameters at the mating age. With age, they developed obesity, hyperleptinaemia, hyperinsulinaemia and hyperglycaemia. Obesity did not develop in mated Ay/a mice; during suckling, they had equal food intake and body weight as a/a mice. During pregnancy, glucose tolerance was enhanced in Ay/a mice and became equal in both genotypes. In both genotypes, concentrations of hormones increased, and glucose decreased from pregnancy day 7 to day 18 and returned to normal values after parturition. Ay/a mice did not differ from a/a in corticosterone, insulin and glucose levels during pregnancy and lactation, in leptin levels during suckling; however, Ay/a mice had two times higher leptin levels than a/a during pregnancy. After weaning, Ay/a mice began to eat and weigh more than a/a exhibiting normal metabolic parameters for 50 days. Conclusion:, Pregnancy and lactation retard obesity and diabetes development in Ay mice. [source]


    Evolving Themes in Rural Development 1950s-2000s

    This article provides a brief overview of the major switches in rural development thinking that have occurred over the past half-century or so. Dominant and subsidiary themes are identified, as well as the co-existence of different narratives running in parallel. The continuing success of the long-running ,small-farm efficiency' paradigm is highlighted. The article concludes by asking whether sustainable livelihoods approaches can be interpreted as providing a new or different way forward for rural development in the future. The answer is a cautious ,yes', since these approaches potentially permit the cross-sectoral and multi-occupational character of contemporary rural livelihoods in low-income countries to be placed centre-stage in efforts to reduce rural poverty.     Cultivation-independent analysis of Pseudomonas species in soil and in the rhizosphere of field-grown Verticillium dahliae host plants

    Summary Despite their importance for rhizosphere functioning, rhizobacterial Pseudomonas spp. have been mainly studied in a cultivation-based manner. In this study a cultivation-independent method was used to determine to what extent the factors plant species, sampling site and year-to-year variation influence Pseudomonas community structure in bulk soil and in the rhizosphere of two Verticillium dahliae host plants, oilseed rape and strawberry. Community DNA was extracted from bulk and rhizosphere soil samples of flowering plants collected at three different sites in Germany in two consecutive years. Pseudomonas community structure and diversity were assessed using a polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) system to fingerprint Pseudomonas -specific 16S rRNA gene fragments amplified from community DNA. Dominant and differentiating DGGE bands were excised from the gels, cloned and sequenced. The factors sampling site, plant species and year-to-year variation were shown to significantly influence the community structure of Pseudomonas in rhizosphere soils. The composition of Pseudomonas 16S rRNA gene fragments in the rhizosphere differed from that in the adjacent bulk soil and the rhizosphere effect tended to be plant-specific. The clone sequences of most dominant bands analysed belonged to the Pseudomonas fluorescens lineage and showed closest similarity to culturable Pseudomonas known for displaying antifungal properties. This report provides a better understanding of how different factors drive Pseudomonas community structure and diversity in bulk and rhizosphere soils. [source]


    Sickness and Aggressive Behavior in Dominant and Subordinate Mice,

    Sick animals show a set of organized behavioral changes (sickness behavior), which is the result of a motivational re-organization of the behavior as a whole. Sickness behavior display can be influenced by the social context. In this work, we sought to investigate the regulation of sickness behavior within a pair of mice in the presence of an intruder mouse. Dominant and subordinate mice were treated with the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and were challenged with the presence of an intruder mouse. LPS effects depended on ranking and social context. Even though dominant mice displayed more agonistic interaction towards the intruder, subordinate mice displayed agonistic behavior towards the intruder when their dominant companion was treated with LPS. The results show that, not only sickness behavior is differentially expressed among different social ranks, but also that sickness behavior is related to different reactions among surrounding animals. These data are relevant for a biological approach to the relation between sickness behavior and social behavior. [source]


    Modern pollen,vegetation relationships in subarctic southern Greenland and the interpretation of fossil pollen data from the Norse landnám

    Abstract Aim, The objective of this paper is to explore the relationships that exist between vegetation and modern pollen rain in the open, largely treeless landscape of subarctic Greenland. The implications of these results for the interpretation of fossil pollen assemblages from the time of the Norse landnám are then examined. Location, The study area is the sheep farming district of Qassiarsuk in the subarctic, subcontinental vegetational and climatic zone of southern Greenland (61° N, 45° W). Between c.ad 1000,1500 this region was contained within the Norse Eastern Settlement. Methods, Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) of harmonized plant,pollen data sets is used to compare plant cover in 64 vegetation quadrats with pollen assemblages obtained from moss polsters at matching locations. Presence/absence data are also used to calculate indices of association, over- and under-representation for pollen types. Results, Good correspondence between paired vegetation,pollen samples occurs in many cases, particularly in locations where Salix glauca,Betula glandulosa dwarf shrub heath is dominant, and across herbaceous field boundaries and meadows. Pollen samples are found to be poor at reflecting actual ground cover where ericales or Juniperus communis are the locally dominant shrubs. Dominant or ubiquitous taxa within this landscape (Betula, Salix and Poaceae) are found to be over-represented in pollen assemblages, as are several of the ,weeds' generally accepted as introduced by the Norse settlers. Main conclusions, Due to their over-representation in the pollen rain, many of the Norse apophytes and introductions (e.g. Rumex acetosa and R. acetosella) traditionally used to infer human activity in Greenland should be particularly sensitive indicators for landnám, allowing early detection of Norse activity in fossil assemblages. Pteridophyte spores are found to be disassociated with the ground cover of ferns and clubmosses, but are over-represented in pollen assemblages, indicating extra-local or regional sources and long residence times in soil/sediment profiles for these microfossils. A pollen record for Hordeum -type registered in close proximity to a field containing barley suggests that summer temperatures under the current climatic regime are, at least on occasion, sufficient to allow flowering.     Male dominance, paternity, and relatedness in the Jamaican fruit-eating bat (Artibeus jamaicensis)

    Abstract We analysed variation at 14 nuclear microsatellite loci to assess the genetic structure, relatedness, and paternity of polygynous Jamaican fruit-eating bats. A total of 84 adults captured in two caves exhibited little genetic differentiation between caves (FST = 0.008). Average relatedness among adult females in 10 harem groups was very low (R = 0.014 ± 0.011), providing no evidence of harem structure. Dominant and subordinate males shared paternity in large groups, while dominant and satellite males shared paternity in smaller groups. However, our results suggest that male rank influences paternity. Dominant males fathered 69% of 40 offspring, followed by satellite (22%) and subordinate males (9%). Overall adult male bats are not closely related, however, in large harem groups we found that subordinate and dominant males exhibited relatedness values consistent with a father-offspring relationship. Because dominant and subordinate males also sired all the pups in large groups, we propose that their association provides inclusive fitness to them. [source]


    The memorialization of September 11: Dominant and local discourses on the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site

    ABSTRACT An inherent tension exists between the meanings of the World Trade Center site created by dominant political and economic players and the significance of the space for those who actually live near it. Most of the writing on and analysis of the site have focused on the construction of a memorial space for an imagined national and global community of visitors who identify with its broader, state-produced meanings. But New Yorkers, in general, and downtown residents, in particular, bring to meaning making their own personal involvement in and knowledge of a located history that has social, political, and economic significance for their everyday lives. These meanings are as much a part of memorialization as the dominant players' political machinations and economic competition for space and status. Uncovering and eliciting these local memorial discourses is part of an ethnographic project that focuses on how personalized narratives of loss emerge and are manipulated within mass-mediated representations of the World Trade Center space. My contribution to understanding how the memorial process works has been to analyze what downtown residents say about their experience of September 11 and its aftermath, to record their feelings about a memorial, and, in so doing, to contest, expand, and modify the dominant media and governmental representations of September 11 and its memorialization.     Viability and bar expression are negatively correlated in Oregon Wolfe Barley Dominant hybrids

    Summary The expression level of bar, which encodes phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT), was correlated with the inviability of barley hybrids between 20 Golden Promise-derived transgenic lines (Ds-bar lines) and a specialized genetic marker stock, Oregon Wolfe Barley Dominant (OWBD). Each Ds-bar line was homozygous for a modified maize Ds element that encoded bar and that had been delivered via transposition to a unique location. All Ds-bar lines were viable and morphologically similar. Only four of the 20 hybrid populations were viable. The remaining populations died prior to producing seed. Phenotypic, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analyses of these lines, and of lines from unrelated transformation events that also expressed bar, showed that viability was negatively correlated with bar expression. Analysis of crosses of a high- bar -expressing line with the OWB mapping population showed that the sensitivity of OWBD to PAT segregated as a single locus on chromosome 6HL. No sensitivity to PAT could be detected in several other lines and cultivars. OWBD has been shown to be genetically divergent from other germplasm groups within cultivated barley; therefore, the observed sensitivity may be peculiar to OWBD and thus would not impact generally on the utility of bar as a selectable marker or source of herbicide resistance in barley. Nevertheless, these results demonstrate the extent of allelic variability present in Hordeum vulgare, and suggest an additional variable for consideration when devising protocols for the transformation of Hordeum cultivars or landraces that are not known to be tolerant to PAT.     Is the Lending Channel of Monetary Policy Dominant in Australia?

    The transmission process of monetary policy is a longstanding macroeconomic issue. The lending view is that a monetary tightening affects aggregate demand by shifting the supply schedule of bank loans left. The contraction of bank loans does not necessarily mean a shift of the supply schedule. Therefore, testing the lending view requires the identification of the shifts of the demand and supply schedules in the bank loan market. This paper employs an original approach, finding that the lending channel is not dominant in Australia. The paper also examines features of Australian banks' behaviour which make the lending channel less dominant. [source]


    Population-Specific Susceptibility to Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis; Dominant and Recessive Relative Risks in the Japanese Population

    Summary Crohn's disease (CD), a type of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is commonly found in European and East Asian countries. The calculated heritability of CD appears to be higher than that of ulcerative colitis (UC), another type of IBD. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than thirty CD-associated genes/regions in the European population. In the East Asian population, however, a clear association between CD and an associated gene has only been detected with TNFSF15. In order to determine if CD susceptibility differs geographically, nine SNPs from seven of the European CD-associated genomic regions were selected for analysis. The genotype frequencies for these SNPs were compared among the 380 collected Japanese samples, which consisted of 212 IBD cases and 168 controls. We detected a significant association of both CD and UC with only the TNFSF15 gene. Analysis by the modified genotype relative risk test (mGRR) indicated that the risk allele of TNFSF15 is dominant for CD, but is recessive for UC. These results suggest that CD and UC susceptibility differs between the Japanese and European populations. Furthermore, it is also likely that CD and UC share a causative factor which exhibits a different dominant/recessive relative risk in the Japanese population. [source]


    Objective countertransference: do patients' interpersonal impacts generalize across therapists?

    Objective countertransference refers to the constricted feelings, attitudes and reactions of a therapist, that are induced primarily by the patient's maladaptive behaviour and that are generalizable to other therapists (and to other significant others in the patient's life). In interpersonal theory and therapy, the equivalent of objective countertransference is the impact message concept. Impact messages refer to the cognitions, emotions and action tendencies evoked in the therapist by a particular patient's interpersonal pressures. This paper tests the interpersonal hypothesis that interpersonal impact generalizes across therapists (and by extension across interpersonal relationships). Generalizability of impact messages across therapists was determined for different combinations of therapist pairs, independently rating a total of 131 psychiatric outpatients with the IMI-C (Impact Message Inventory, revised circumplex version). It was found that impact messages were most clearly generalizable across therapists for the Dominance (D) category, followed by the Hostile,Dominant (HD) and Hostile,Submissive (HS) categories. In contrast, the other five categories of impact messages turned out to be poorly generalizable across therapists. Impact messages within the Dominance (D) category were also strikingly stable over a period of time of 12 months or longer.     Collective Grain Interactions II.

    Abstract It is found that the collective effects operating at large distances from the grain surface can produce substantial scattering of the ion flux and create an additional collective drag force dominant for large grain densities. The consideration is restricted to large grain charges , = Zde2a /Ti,Di , 1 and Ti /Te , 1 (,eZd being the grain charge in units of electron charge, a being the grain size, ,Di being the ion Debye radius and Te,i being electron and ion temperatures, respectively). For present dusty plasma experiments , , 10,50, the large charges of grains are screened non-linearly and the ion scattering creates non-linear drag force. The present investigation considers effects of scattering by collective grain fields at large distances from the grains. It is found that the physical reason of the importance of collective drag force, calculated in this paper, is related to presence of weakly screened collective field of grains outside the non-linear screening distance depending on grain densities. The amplitude of this collective fields of the grains is determined by non-linear screening at non-linear screening radius. It is shown that for dust densities of present experiments the collective drag force related to this scattering can be of the order of the non-linear drag force caused by scattering inside the non-linear screening radius or even larger.     In vivo phosphorylation of regulatory light chain of myosin II in sea urchin eggs and its role in controlling myosin localization and function during cytokinesis

    Abstract Phosphorylation of myosin regulatory light chain (RLC) at Ser19 (mono-phosphorylation) promotes filament assembly and enhances actin-activated ATPase activity of non-muscle myosin, while phosphorylation at both Ser19 and Thr18 (di-phosphorylation) further enhances the ATPase activity. However, it has not well been addressed which type of phosphorylation is important in regulating myosin during cytokinesis. Here, we investigated subcellular localization in sea urchin eggs of mono-phosphorylated and di-phosphorylated RLC by both quantitative biochemical and spatiotemporal cytological approaches. Mono-phosphorylated RLC was dominant in the equatorial cortex throughout the whole process of cytokinesis. Inhibition of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) decreased mono-phosphorylated RLC both in the cortex and in the cleavage furrow, and blocked both formation and contraction of the contractile ring. Two different types of ROCK inhibitor gave inconsistent results: H1152 blocked both RLC mono-phosphorylation in the cleavage furrow and contraction of the contractile ring, while Y27632 affected neither the mono-phosphorylation nor cell division. These results suggest that there may be other targets of H1152 than ROCK, which is involved in the RLC phosphorylation in the cleavage furrow. Furthermore, it was revealed that localization of myosin heavy chain in the cleavage furrow, but not in the cortex, was perturbed by inhibition of RLC mono-phosphorylation. These results suggested that RLC mono-phosphorylation by more than two RLC kinases play a main role in regulation and localization of myosin in the dividing sea urchin eggs. Cell Motil.     Simulated microgravity activates MAPK pathways in fibroblasts cultured on microgrooved surface topography

    Abstract This study evaluated in vitro the differences in morphological behaviour between fibroblast cultured on smooth and microgrooved substrata (groove depth: 0.5 ,m, width: 1 ,m), which were subjected to simulated microgravity. The aim of the study was to clarify which of these parameters was more dominant to determine cell behaviour. Morphological characteristics were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy in order to obtain qualitative information on cell alignment. Expression of collagen type I, and ,1-, ,1-, ,3-integrin were investigated by QPCR. Finally, immunoblotting was applied to visualise MAPK signalling pathways. Microscopy and image analysis showed that the fibroblasts aligned along the groove direction on all textured surfaces. On the smooth substrata, cells had spread out in a random fashion. The alignment of cells cultured on grooved surfaces under simulated microgravity, after 48 h of culturing appeared similar to those cultured at 1g, although cell shape was different. Analysis of variance proved that all main parameters: topography, gravity force, and time were significant. In addition, gene levels were reduced by simulated microgravity particularly those of ,3-integrin and collagen, however alpha-1 and beta-1 integrin levels were up-regulated. ERK1/2 was reduced in RPM, however, JNK/SAPK and p38 remained active. The members of the small GTPases family were stimulated under microgravity, particularly RhoA and Cdc42. The results are in agreement that application of microgravity to fibroblasts promotes a change in their morphological appearance and their expression of cell-substratum proteins through the MAPK intracellular signalling pathways.     The effect of combined simulated microgravity and microgrooved surface topography on fibroblasts

Confocal laser scanning microscopy visualised distribution of actin filaments and focal adhesion points. Finally, expression of collagen type I, fibronectin, and ,1- and ,1-integrin were investigated by PCR. Microscopy and image analysis showed that the fibroblasts aligned along the groove direction on all textured surfaces. On the smooth substrata, cells had spread out in a random fashion. The alignment of cells cultured on grooved surfaces decreased under simulated microgravity, especially after 24 h of culturing. Cell surface area on grooved substrata were significantly smaller than on smooth substrata, but simulated microgravity on the grooved groups resulted in an enlargement of cell area. ANOVA was performed on all main parameters: topography, gravity force, and time. In this analysis, all parameters proved significant. In addition, gene levels were reduced by microgravity particularly those of ,1-integrin and fibronectin. From our data it is concluded that the fibroblasts primarily adjust their shape according to morphological environmental cues like substratum surface whilst a secondary, but significant, role is played by microgravity conditions.     Nesprins, but not sun proteins, switch isoforms at the nuclear envelope during muscle development

    Abstract Nesprins are a family of nuclear transmembrane proteins anchored via Sun proteins to the nuclear membrane. Analysis of nesprins during human muscle development revealed an increase in nesprin-1-giant during early myogenesis in vitro. During the transition from immature to mature muscle fibres in vivo, nesprin-2 partly replaced nesprin-1 at the nuclear envelope and short nesprin isoforms became dominant. Sun1 and Sun2 proteins remained unchanged during this fibre maturation. In emerin-negative skin fibroblasts, nesprin-2-giant was relocated from the nuclear envelope to the cytoplasm, not to the endoplasmic reticulum, while nesprin-1 remained at the nuclear envelope. In emerin-negative keratinocytes lacking nesprin-1, nesprin-2 remained at the nuclear envelope. HeLa cell nuclear envelopes lacked nesprin-1, which was the dominant form in myoblasts, while a novel 130-kD nesprin-2 isoform dominated Ntera-2 cells.     Social context affects testosterone-induced singing and the volume of song control nuclei in male canaries (Serinus canaria)

    Abstract The contribution of social factors to seasonal plasticity in singing behavior and forebrain nuclei controlling song, and their interplay with gonadal steroid hormones are still poorly understood. In many songbird species, testosterone (T) enhances singing behavior but elevated plasma T concentrations are not absolutely required for singing to occur. Singing is generally produced either to defend a territory or to attract a mate and it is therefore not surprising that singing rate can be influenced by the sex and behavior of the social partner. We investigated, based on two independent experiments, the effect of the presence of a male or female partner on the rate of song produced by male canaries. In the first experiment, song rate was measured in dyads composed of one male and one female (M-F) or two males (M-M). Birds were implanted with T-filled Silastic capsules or with empty capsules as control. The number of complete song bouts produced by all males was recorded during 240 min on week 1, 2, 4, and 8 after implantation. On the day following each recording session, brains from approximately one-fourth of the birds were collected and the volumes of the song control nuclei HVC and RA were measured. T increased the singing rate and volume of HVC and RA but these effects were affected by the social context. Singing rates were higher in the M-M than in the M-F dyads. Also, in the M-M dyads a dominance-subordination relationship soon became established and dominant males sang at higher rates than subordinates in T-treated but not in control pairs. The differences in song production were not reflected in the size of the song control nuclei: HVC was larger in M-F than in M-M males and within the M-M dyads, no difference in HVC or RA size could be detected between dominant and subordinate males. At the individual level, the song rate with was positively correlated with RA and to a lower degree HVC volume, but this relationship was observed only in M-M dyads, specifically in dominant males. A second experiment, carried out with castrated males that were all treated with T and exposed either to another T-treated castrate or to an estradiol-implanted female, confirmed that song rate was higher in the M-M than in the M-F condition and that HVC volume was larger in heterosexual than in same-sex dyads. The effects of T on singing rate and on the volume of the song control nuclei are thus modulated by the social environment, including the presence/absence of a potential mate and dominance status among males. 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Relationship between eye preference and binocular rivalry, and between eye-hand preference and reading ability in children

    Abstract One goal of the experiment presented here was to check, in children, the relationship between eye preference when sighting at different angles and eye dominance in binocular rivalry. In addition, since it is sometimes argued that a crossed pattern of eye-hand preference might put children at risk of difficulties in learning to read, we evaluated the relationship between this pattern and reading achievement in first and sixth graders. Results showed that a majority of children are right-eyed for monosighting, and that intrinsic preference and spatial factor influence the choice of eye. As many children were right- or left-eye dominant, and eye dominance was not related to eye preference. We found no relationship between eye-hand preference and reading proficiency, thus not confirming that a crossed pattern of eye-hand preference might put children at risk of difficulties in learning to read.     The distribution and prevalence of sponges in relation to environmental gradients within a temperate sea lough: vertical cliff surfaces

    Abstract. The prevalence and distribution of sponges was surveyed on vertical cliff surfaces at Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve, Co. Cork, Ireland. The number of sponge species was recorded at 6-metre depth intervals at four sites within Lough Hyne, and at one site on the adjacent Atlantic coastline to examine differences in abundance and zonation patterns. Sites ranged from an exposed turbulent regime to sheltered, sedimented environments. Individual species showed different distributions and prevalence between sites and with increasing depth. Greatest differences were observed between the most- and least-disturbed sites. Distinct sponge zonation patterns were evident at all sites sampled. Twenty-five species were considered dominant at all five sites with the remaining 48 species considered rare. Only four of the 25 most-dominant species occurred at the site experiencing the most turbulent flow conditions, whereas 12 species were found at the site of unidirectional fast flow. At sites of moderate to slight water movement and high sedimentation, between 18 and 24 of the most dominant species were present. Encrusting forms constituted high proportions of sponge communities at all five sites sampled (although consisting of different species). At sites of turbulent and unidirectional fast flow massive forms also dominated whereas at the least turbulent sites, where sedimentation was high, arborescent sponges were abundant. Few species showed exclusive distribution to a single depth and site, but there was some degree of correlation between species distributions and abiotic factors such as sedimentation rate and flow regimes. Sponge distributions and densities are discussed with respect to the suitability of species' morphologies to particular environments, intra-specific and inter-specific competition and physiological adaptations that enable them to survive in different habitats.     Dynamics of soil erosion rates and controlling factors in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands , towards a sediment budget

    Abstract This paper analyses the factors that control rates and extent of soil erosion processes in the 199 ha May Zegzeg catchment near Hagere Selam in the Tigray Highlands (Northern Ethiopia). This catchment, characterized by high elevations (2100,2650 m a.s.l.) and a subhorizontal structural relief, is typical for the Northern Ethiopian Highlands. Soil loss rates due to various erosion processes, as well as sediment yield rates and rates of sediment deposition within the catchment (essentially induced by recent soil conservation activities), were measured using a range of geomorphological methods. The area-weighted average rate of soil erosion by water in the catchment, measured over four years (1998,2001), is 14·8 t ha,1 y,1, which accounts for 98% of the change in potential energy of the landscape. Considering these soil loss rates by water, 28% is due to gully erosion. Other geomorphic processes, such as tillage erosion and rock fragment displacement by gravity and livestock trampling, are also important, either within certain land units, or for their impact on agricultural productivity. Estimated mean sediment deposition rate within the catchment equals 9·2 t ha,1 y,1. Calculated sediment yield (5·6 t ha,1 y,1) is similar to sediment yield measured in nearby catchments. Seventy-four percent of total soil loss by sheet and rill erosion is trapped in exclosures and behind stone bunds. The anthropogenic factor is dominant in controlling present-day erosion processes in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands. Human activities have led to an overall increase in erosion process intensities, but, through targeted interventions, rural society is now well on the way to control and reverse the degradation processes, as can be demonstrated through the sediment budget.     Use of non-limiting substrates to increase size; a generic strategy to simultaneously optimize uptake and minimize predation in pelagic osmotrophs?

    Abstract Coexistence of two organisms competing for the same nutrient is possible if one is an ,uptake', and the other a ,predation defence' specialist. In pelagic food webs this principle has been linked to cell size. Small osmotroph cells, with their high surface : volume ratio, have been argued to be uptake specialists, while larger osmotrophs avoiding the intense grazing pressure from small protozoan predators might represent ,predation defence' specialists. This may seem like an obligatory trade-off situation that necessitates a choice of either being small or being large, and thus being potentially dominant in oligotrophic or in eutrophic environments, respectively. However, in a more precise form, the theory for nutrient diffusion states that it is the ,surface : cell requirement of limiting element' ratio, rather than the ,surface : volume' ratio, that is important. The distinction is crucial, since it opens up the possibility of there being life strategies that use a non-limiting element to increase size. Hypothesized to maximize uptake and predator defence simultaneously, such strategies should be particularly successful. We suggest that this strategy is exploited by osmotrophs with different size and physiology, such as heterotrophic bacteria, unicellular cyanobacteria and diatoms. Since the strategy implies a shift in organism stoichiometry, the biogeochemical implications are strong, illustrating the tight relationships between physical micro-scale processes, organism life strategies, biodiversity, food web structure, and biogeochemistry.     Competition and character displacement in two species of scincid lizards

    Abstract The role of competition in habitat occupation and character displacement is investigated in two species of alpine lizards (Niveoscincus microlepidotus and N. greeni), using both controlled competition experiments and field-based ecological work. Competition experiments demonstrate that interspecific aggression occurs between these closely related species, with the larger and more aggressive N. greeni being socially dominant. When these species occur in sympatry, N. microlepidotus was found to shift its habitat occupation to the heathlands, which provide less thermal opportunities. In addition, a reduction in body size occurred in both adult and neonatal N. microlepidotus at sympatric field sites. Differences in body size between N. microlepidotus and N. greeni in sympatry were significantly greater than in allopatry, indicating that character displacement is occurring. Results, combined with previous molecular and biogeographical data, suggest that there is a trend towards a reduction in body size and a restriction in habitat occupation in N. microlepidotus in the north-east periphery of its distribution, which is shaped by competition with N. greeni.     Insoluble eggshell matrix proteins , their peptide mapping and partial characterization by capillary electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography

    Abstract Avian eggshell matrix proteins were studied by two analytical approaches. Peptide mapping was done by trypsin and pepsin followed by collagenase cleavage; analyses were carried out by capillary electrophoresis and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Comparison of peptide maps obtained by both methods revealed a complex mixture of peptides in the insoluble layers of the eggshell; it was concluded that there are at least three different insoluble protein/peptide layers in the avian eggshell (cuticle, palisade, and mammillary layer). Partial characterization of peptides in each layer was made by HPLC-mass spectrometry analysis. There is an evidence that the eggshell insoluble proteins contain species susceptible to collagenase cleavage, however, the sequences split by this enzyme probably are not those typical for the main triple-helical core of collagenous proteins. It is proposed that the action of collagenase upon eggshell proteins is caused by the side effect of collagenase described previously with synthetic peptides. Some of the proteins present are probably glycosylated. Fatty acid content in the insoluble eggshell layers (after decalcification) was in the range of 2,4% (which reflected both lipid and lipoproteins bound fatty acids). Porphyrin pigments are dominant in the cuticle layer. [source]


    Speciation of Arsenic under Dynamic Conditions

    Abstract In periodically flooded soils, reductive conditions can occur, which favor the dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides. Fe (hydr)oxides such as goethite are important sorbents for arsenate (AsV), which is the dominant As species in soils under aerobic conditions. Hence, the dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides under reductive conditions can result in the mobilization and reduction of AsV and, thus, in an increase in the bioavailability of arsenic. The temporal dynamics of these processes and possible re-sorption or precipitation of arsenite (AsIII) formed are poorly understood. Under controlled laboratory conditions, the temporal change in the redox potential and arsenic speciation with time after a simulated flooding event in a quartz-goethite organic matter substrate, spiked with AsV, was examined. During a period of 6,weeks, substrate solutions were sampled weekly using micro-suction cups and analyzed for pH, AsIII and AsV, Fe, Mn and P concentrations. Redox potentials and matric potentials were determined in situ in the substrate-bearing cylinders. The redox potential and the ratio between AsIII and AsV concentrations remained unchanged during the experiment without organic matter application. With organic matter applied, the redox potential decreased and the AsIII concentrations in the substrate solution increased while the total As concentrations in the substrate solution strongly decreased. An addition of goethite (1,g/kg) per se led to a decrease of the total As in the substrate solution (almost 50,%). In respect to the potential As availability for plants, and consequently, the transfer into the food chain, the results are difficult to evaluate. The lower the total As concentrations in the substrate solution, determined with decreasing redox potential, the least plant As uptake will occur. This effect may however be compensated by a shift of the molar P/AsV ratio in the solution in favor of AsV which is expected to increase the As uptake. [source]


    Does the Model of Language in the National Literacy Strategy Create Failure for Pupils from Differing Language Backgrounds?

    Abstract The National Literacy Strategy (NLS) was introduced by the government in the wake of the hotly debated issue of falling educational standards in the UK. All schools were required to adopt the NLS Literacy Hour unless they could show their preferred programme would result in raised levels of achievement. My experience of delivering the Literacy Hour has been a process of adaptation to the needs of my pupils, who are drawn mainly from groups whose language backgrounds differ from that which is dominant in school. I have found that the requirements of NLS, together with many of the commercial resources used to teach it, are not appropriate for pupils from these groups and a question arose: is it the pupils who are in some way deficient or is it the approach and the resources being used? This article takes a case study of the use of a commercially produced resource to explore the model of language implicit in NLS, the kinds of resources it generates and the ways in which this creates failure in pupils from different language backgrounds. It then considers the New Literacy Studies and their implications for an alteration in our approach. [source]


    Inheritance of resistance against biotype 2 of the Asian rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzae

    Abstract The inheritance of resistance in the rice cultivars Phalguna, ARC5984, ARC 5158, Veluthacheera, and T1477 to the Asian rice gall midge biotype 2 was studied under both natural and artificial infestation conditions against the susceptible cultivars Jaya and IR20. A single recessive gene in Veluthacheera and two recessive complementary genes in T1477 control resistance. Phalguna and ARC5984 possess a single dominant gene while ARC5158 has a single dominant and a single recessive gene for resistance. Allelism studies showed that genes for resistance in Veluthacheera and T1477 are allelic but non-allelic to the resistance genes in Phalguna and ARC5984, which are allelic to each other. Genes for resistance in ARC5158 are allelic to resistance genes of the other four donors. There was no cytoplasmic inhibition of resistance by the susceptible parents. [source]


    Correlation between population dynamics of mosquito larvae and their habitat qualities

    Abstract Surveillance of anopheline and culicine larvae was conducted fortnightly to determine population composition and density at seven sites in the area of the Mathura Refinery, Mathura, India during 2005,2006. The correlation between population of the vectors and their habitat quality was established. Temperature (0.978 and 0.85°C), pH (0.99 and 0.95), conductivity (0.98 and 0.98 mho) and calcium ion hardness (0.978 and 0.85 p.p.m.) were positively correlated with the populations of both larval species. In contrast, the correlation coefficients between the parameters total hardness, magnesium ion hardness, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand varied with the larval species. The anopheline larval population was dominant over the culicine population in the surveillance area. The distribution of anopheline mosquito larvae during the study period was found to be constant, and the average density of anopheline and culicine larvae was 84.70 and 15.30%, respectively, across all seven sites. Thus, the study demonstrated spatial and temporal population differences of mosquito larvae with respect to environmental factors, including water quality. [source]


    Management of Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) of the Most Perishable Fruits

    ABSTRACT We investigated to minimize the dependency on the use of chemicals and thus develop safe and environmental friendly control program for the most perishable fruits i.e., apple,,ber', guava and mango. Our findings on the composition of fruit fly species reveal that Bactrocera dorsalis was dominant on apple (33.96% existence), Corpomya incompleta on,ber'(51.91% existence) and Bactrocera zonata on guava (49.62% existence) and mango (74.66% existence). The correlation between population and infestation percentage was non-significant in apple orchards, whereas positive and highly significant in between population and infestation, as well as on the cumulative basis in,ber', guava and mango orchards during 1998-1999. Hoeing, baiting and methyl eugenol were statistically equal resulting about 77% decrease in infestation. The maximum control of 91.68% was observed where all four-control operations including Dipterex® were integrated together. Weather factors, when computed together, had maximum effect on population fluctuation and infestation with rainfall contributing the major role. For guava fruits, the months of August (14.06A individuals/trap/day) and September (13.81A individuals/trap/day) were important, resulting in maximum infestation percentage of 10.76 to 14.74%, respectively.     Disclosing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal biodiversity in soil through a land-use gradient using a pyrosequencing approach

    Summary The biodiversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities present in five Sardinian soils (Italy) subjected to different land-use (tilled vineyard, covered vineyard, pasture, managed meadow and cork-oak formation) was analysed using a pyrosequencing-based approach for the first time. Two regions of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene were considered as molecular target. The pyrosequencing produced a total of 10924 sequences: 6799 from the first and 4125 from the second target region. Among these sequences, 3189 and 1003 were selected to generate operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and to evaluate the AMF community richness and similarity: 117 (37 of which were singletons) and 28 (nine of which were singletons) unique AMF OTUs were detected respectively. Within the Glomeromycota OTUs, those belonging to the Glomerales order were dominant in all the soils. Diversisporales OTUs were always detected, even though less frequently, while Archaeosporales and Paraglomerales OTUs were exclusive of the pasture soil. Eleven OTUs were shared by all the soils, but each of the five AMF communities showed particular features, suggesting a meaningful dissimilarity among the Glomeromycota populations. The environments with low inputs (pasture and covered vineyard) showed a higher AMF biodiversity than those subjected to human input (managed meadow and tilled vineyard). A reduction in AMF was found in the cork-oak formation because other mycorrhizal fungal species, more likely associated to trees and shrubs, were detected. These findings reinforce the view that AMF biodiversity is influenced by both human input and ecological traits, illustrating a gradient of AMF communities which mirror the land-use gradient. The high number of sequences obtained by the pyrosequencing strategy has provided detailed information on the soil AMF assemblages, thus offering a source of light to shine on this crucial soil microbial group.
