Sintering of Partially Stabilized Zirconia by Microwave Heating Using ZnO,MnO2,Al2O3 Plates in a Domestic Microwave Oven

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) powders were fully densified by microwave heating using a domestic microwave oven. Pressed powder compacts of PSZ were sandwiched between two ZnO,MnO2,Al2O3 ceramic plates and put into the microwave oven. In the first step, PSZ green pellets were heated by self-heating of ZnO,MnO2,Al2O3 ceramics (1000°C). In the second step, the heated PSZ pellets absorbed microwave energy and self-heated up to a higher temperature (1250°C), leading to densification. The density of PSZ obtained by heating in the microwave oven for 16 min was 5.7 g/cm3, which was approximately equal to the density of bodies sintered at 1300°C for 4 h or 1400°C for 16 min by the conventional method. The average grain size of the sample obtained by this method was larger than the average grain size of samples sintered by the conventional method with a similar heating process. [source]


Intramolecular phenylborane complexes with monobasic bidentate Schiff bases

Abstract A series of intramolecular complexes with Schiff base ligands having N,S and N,O donor systems were synthesized in an open vessel under microwave irradiation (MWI) using a domestic microwave oven. The reaction time has been brought down from hours to seconds with improved yield as compared with the conventional heating. The complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, conductance measurements and spectroscopic analysis. Based on the IR, 1H NMR, 11B NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies, a tetrahedral geometry has been proposed for the resulting complexes. The compounds have been screened in vitro against bacteria and fungi to test their antimicrobial property and in vivo in male albino rats to test their antifertility property. The testicular sperm density, motility and density of cauda epididymal spermatozoa along with biochemical parameters of reproductive organs have been examined and discussed. A test procedure to characterise the heating performance of domestic microwave ovens

Summary A test procedure has been developed and used to characterise the performance of domestic microwave ovens in relation to the heating of chilled ready meals. The procedure uses reproducible test loads, which simulate the heating and weight loss characteristics of a chilled ready meal under consumer use. The temperature distribution after heating from 5 °C to a defined minimum temperature of 70 °C is measured in the food simulant using a purpose designed multipoint thermocouple ,hedgehog' probe. The temperature, weight loss and heating time data from the test are entered into a spreadsheet analysis program, which provides a simple oven performance ,score' and/or comprehensive heating performance data. Microwave-Assisted Polymer Synthesis: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives

Abstract Summary: Monomodal microwaves have overcome the safety uncertainties associated with the precedent domestic microwave ovens. After fast acceptance in inorganic and organic syntheses, polymer chemists have also recently discovered this new kind of microwave reactor. An almost exponential increase of the number of publications in this field reflects the steadily growing interest in the use of microwave irradiation for polymerizations. This review introduces the microwave systems and their applications in polymer syntheses, covering step-growth and ring-opening, as well as radical polymerization processes, in order to summarize the hitherto realized polymerizations. Special attention is paid to the differences between microwave-assisted and conventional heating as well as the "microwave effects".
