Grid services for earthquake science

Abstract We describe an information system architecture for the ACES (Asia,Pacific Cooperation for Earthquake Simulation) community. It addresses several key features of the field,simulations at multiple scales that need to be coupled together; real-time and archival observational data, which needs to be analyzed for patterns and linked to the simulations; a variety of important algorithms including partial differential equation solvers, particle dynamics, signal processing and data analysis; a natural three-dimensional space (plus time) setting for both visualization and observations; the linkage of field to real-time events both as an aid to crisis management and to scientific discovery. We also address the need to support education and research for a field whose computational sophistication is rapidly increasing and spans a broad range. The information system assumes that all significant data is defined by an XML layer which could be virtual, but whose existence ensures that all data is object-based and can be accessed and searched in this form. The various capabilities needed by ACES are defined as grid services, which are conformant with emerging standards and implemented with different levels of fidelity and performance appropriate to the application. Grid Services can be composed in a hierarchical fashion to address complex problems. The real-time needs of the field are addressed by high-performance implementation of data transfer and simulation services. Further, the environment is linked to real-time collaboration to support interactions between scientists in geographically distant locations. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Cutaneous melanoma: therapeutic lymph node and elective lymph node dissections, lymphatic mapping, and sentinel lymph node biopsy

ABSTRACT:, Early clinical observation in cancer patients suggested that tumors spread in a methodical, stepwise fashion from the primary site, to the regional lymphatics, and only then to distant locations. Based on these observations, the regional lymphatics were believed to be mechanical barriers, at least temporarily preventing the widespread dissemination of tumor. Despite evidence now available disputing its validity, this barrier theory has guided the surgical management of the regional lymphatics in cancer patients for more than a century, influencing the use of such surgical modalities as therapeutic lymph node dissection, elective lymph node dissection, and most recently lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy. No published randomized controlled trial exists that demonstrates improved overall patient survival for cancer of any type, including melanoma, after surgical excision of regional lymphatics. This article will review the biology of lymphatics as it relates to regional tumor metastasis, and based on available information, offer practical recommendations for the clinical dermatologist and their patients who have cutaneous melanoma. The artisanal fishery fleet of the lower Amazon

Abstract, The present study analyses temporal trends in the characteristics of the artisanal fleet landing at ports in the city of Santarém (lower Amazon) from 1993 to 2003. A total of 2714 boats visited the city, accounting for more than 76 000 landings. Of these, 1952 were fishing boats; the others were buyer boats, specialised in the purchase of fish in rural areas for resale in Santarém. The activity involves more than 13 000 fishermen. Fishing boats are made of wood, are on average 11 m long and powered by a 20 hp outboard motor. Boats operate with an average of six to seven fishermen, spending 6 days per trip and catching between 300 and 800 kg of fish. Most variability in yield can be explained by the ice consumed (70%), the number of fishermen trip,1 (19%), fuel consumed (4%) and days spent fishing (3%). The yield changed according to the size, origin and type of boat. Fishing boats coming from more distant locations, in the state of Amazonas, performed better than those from Santarém. Total yield declined slightly during the study period. Mean age of fishing boats and fishing power is increasing. Consumption of ice and fuel by trip, number of fishermen trip,1 and mean days fishing showed positive trends. Financial subsidies from governmental agencies are criticised. Network Resources for Internationalization: The Case of Taiwan's Electronics Firms*

ABSTRACT This paper illustrates foreign direct investment (FDI) as the management of important network relations, using Taiwan's electronics firms as an example. Through FDI, seemingly small and weak firms propel the process of internationalization by making maximum use of external resources to which they have access. FDI often starts at a location close to the home base where support from the domestic networks can be drawn, subsequently moving on to more distant locations after investors have accumulated new network resources. The location chosen is usually an area rich in network resources or in close proximity to such rich networks. FDI enables the investors to construct a regional, or even global, sub-network under their control to supply a set of wide-ranging, differentiated and low-cost products in a flexible fashion, and sometimes within close proximity to the markets. With this capacity for versatility, investors become valuable partners for multinational firms that offer global services. [source]


Patterns of population subdivision and gene flow in the ant Nothomyrmecia macrops reflected in microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers

Abstract The Australian endemic ant Nothomyrmecia macrops is renowned for having retained a large proportion of ,primitive' morphological and behavioural characters. Another less studied peculiarity of this species is the production of short-winged (brachypterous) female sexuals, which presumably are poor dispersers. The males, in contrast, bear a full set of normally developed wings and thus may disperse widely. We investigated patterns of genetic differentiation within and among three distantly separated populations in South Australia using nine polymorphic microsatellite loci and four regions of mitochondrial DNA (COI, COII, Cytb, lrRNA). We sampled eight subpopulations, one in the Lake Gilles CP, two near Penong and five around Poochera where distances ranged from 360 km to sites separated by 2,10 km. Only little differentiation was found at the local scale (within the assumed dispersal distance of males) using nuclear markers, whereas the three distant locations were moderately differentiated (FST = 0.06). Mitochondrial DNA genetic structure was much more pronounced on all scales (,ST = 0.98), with regular differences in both haplotype composition and frequency even occurring among closely located sites. This lack of congruence between nuclear and mitochondrial markers strongly suggests limited female dispersal and male-biased gene flow among populations. As to the conservation status of the species there is no evidence for severe population reductions in the recent past, which would have left populations genetically depauperate. [source]


Small bowel tumours: a 10 year experience in four sydney teaching hospitals

Background: Small bowel tumours are uncommon and can have a long delay prior to diagnosis. The present study aims to compare the use of computed tomography (CT) and contrast small bowel series (SBS) in their diagnosis and to outline the clinical features of small bowel tumours. Methods: A retrospective, case note study was conducted between 1990 and 2000 in four Sydney teaching hospitals. The data collected included clinical features, investigations and tumour characteristics. Results: One hundred and sixty-six people with small bowel tumours were identified (91 malignant; 75 benign). Malignant tumours consisted of adenocarcinomas (31%), carcinoid tumours (12%), lymphomas (7%) and leiomyosarcomas (5%). Benign tumours consisted of adenomas (22%), hamartomas (13%), leiomyomas (4%), inflammatory polyps (4%) and hyperplastic polyps (2%) and a benign schwannoma (1%). Adenocarcinomas were mainly located in the duodenum (P < 0.001) and carcinoid tumours in the ileum (P < 0.001). Malignant tumours were associated with a higher proportion of symptoms (P < 0.01), signs (P < 0.001) and episodes of small bowel obstruction (P < 0.01). Abdominal CT scans demonstrated a greater sensitivity (87.7%) than SBS (72.9%) with a slightly improved sensitivity when both investigations were used (89.3%). Abdominal ultrasound had a lower sensitivity than both of the above investigations of 65%. Gastroduodenoscopy had a sensitivity of 90% for diagnosing duodenal tumours. Operative procedures were performed on 92 patients with a preoperative diagnosis made in 77%. Metastatic spread of malignant tumours was evident in 46%. The sites of spread were to lymph nodes (23%), liver (21%) and distant locations (2%) at diagnosis. Conclusions: Malignant small bowel tumours are more likely to produce symptoms and signs than benign tumours, particularly caused by small bowel obstruction. Abdominal CT is the best radiological investigation for small bowel tumours and has a slight complimentary effect with SBS in improving the chances of detection. Gastroduodenoscopy remains the best investigation of duodenal tumours. [source]
