QUANTIFYING ADULTERATION IN ROAST COFFEE POWDERS BY DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING

Pure arabica coffee and mixtures of coffee husks and straw, maize, brown sugar and soybean were produced in our laboratory as investigation materials. Red/Green/Blue (RGB) color composites, magnified twelve times, were generated using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera connected to a stereo microscope and a personal computer with an image processing software package. The percent areas of the contaminants in each image were calculated by the Maximum Likelihood supervised classification technique. Best-fit equations relating weight percentage (g.kg -1) and the percent areas were obtained for each coffee contaminant. To test the method, 247 coffee samples of different amounts and types of adulterants were analyzed in the laboratory. The results showed that the new method developed can analyze precisely and quickly a large number of ground coffee powders. [source]


A new land-cover map of Africa for the year 2000

Abstract Aim, In the framework of the Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC 2000), a land-cover map of Africa has been produced at a spatial resolution of 1 km using data from four sensors on-board four different Earth observing satellites. Location, The map documents the location and distribution of major vegetation types and non-vegetated land surface formations for the entire African continent plus Madagascar and the other surrounding islands. Methods, The bulk of these data were acquired on a daily basis throughout the year 2000 by the VEGETATION sensor on-board the SPOT-4 satellite. The map of vegetation cover has been produced based upon the spectral response and the temporal profile of the vegetation cover. Digital image processing and geographical information systems techniques were employed, together with local knowledge, high resolution imagery and expert consultation, to compile a cartographic map product. Radar data and thermal sensors were also used for specific land-cover classes. Results, A total of 27 land cover categories are documented, which has more thematic classes than previously published land cover maps of Africa contain. Systematic comparison with existing land cover data and 30-m resolution imagery from Landsat are presented, and the map is also compared with other pan-continental land cover maps. The map and digital data base are freely available for non-commercial uses from http://www.gvm.jrc.it/tem/africa/products.htm Main conclusions, The map improves our state of knowledge of the land-cover of Africa and presents the most spatially detailed view yet published at this scale. This first version of the map should provide an important input for regional stratification and planning purposes for natural resources, biodiversity and climate studies. Résumé Objet, Dans le cadre du projet Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC 2000), une carte d'Afrique d'occupation du sol a été produite à la résolution spatiale de 1 km à partir de données satellitales de 4 capteurs différents. Localisation, La carte représente la distribution des principaux types de végétation et des surfaces non-végétales du continent africain plus Madagascar et les autres îles voisines du continent. Méthodes, La plupart des données fut acquise durant l'année 2000 par le capteur VEGETATION, embarquéà bord du satellite SPOT-4. La réponse spectrale et le profil temporel des formations végétales ont permis la production de la carte d'occupation du sol. Des techniques de traitement d'image et de systèmes d'information géographique ont été combinées à la consultation d'experts locaux et à l'utilisation de cartes nationales et de données à haute résolution spatiale. Des images radar et thermiques ont servi à cartographier des classes spécifiques. Résultats, Un total de 27 classes est cartographié, ce qui est plus que les précédentes cartes basées sur l'imagerie satellitale. Une comparaison systématique avec les cartes publiées et des images Landsat à 30 m est présentée. Les données sont libres d'accès pour un usage non-commercial à l'adresse http://www.gvm.jrc.it/tem/africa/products.htm Conclusion, Cette carte accroît notre connaissance de l'occupation du sol de l'Afrique et présente la vue la plus détaillée jamais publiée à cette échelle. Experimental determination of saltating glass particle dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer

Abstract A horizontal saltation layer of glass particles in air is investigated experimentally over a flat bed and also over a triangular ridge in a wind tunnel. Particle concentrations are measured by light scattering diffusion (LSD) and digital image processing, and velocities using particle image velocimetry (PIV). All the statistical moments of the particle concentration are determined such as mean concentration, root mean square concentration fluctuations, skewness and flatness coefficients. Over the flat bed, it is confirmed that the mean concentration decreases exponentially with height, the mean dispersion height being a significant length scale. It is shown that the concentration distribution follows quite well a lognormal distribution. Over the ridge, measurements were made at the top of the ridge and in the cavity region and are compared with measurements without the ridge. On the hill crest, particles are retarded, the saltation layer decreases in thickness and concentration is increased. Downwind of the ridge, particle flow behaves like a jet, in particular no particle return flow is observed. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Morphometric analysis and tectonic interpretation of digital terrain data: a case study

Abstract Tectonic movement along faults is often re,ected by characteristic geomorphological features such as linear valleys, ridgelines and slope-breaks, steep slopes of uniform aspect, regional anisotropy and tilt of terrain. Analysis of digital elevation models, by means of numerical geomorphology, provides a means of recognizing fractures and characterizing the tectonics of an area in a quantitative way. The objective of this study is to investigate the use of numerical geomorphometric methods for tectonic geomorphology through a case study. The methodology is based on general geomorphometry. In this study, the basic geometric attributes (elevation, slope, aspect and curvatures) are complemented with the automatic extraction of ridge and valley lines and surface speci,c points. Evans' univariate and bivariate methodology of general geomorphometry is extended with texture (spatial) analysis methods, such as trend, autocorrelation, spectral, and network analysis. Terrain modelling is implemented with the integrated use of: (1) numerical differential geometry; (2) digital drainage network analysis; (3) digital image processing; and (4) statistical and geostatistical analysis. Application of digital drainage network analysis is emphasized. A simple shear model with principal displacement zone with an NE,SW orientation can account for most of the the morphotectonic features found in the basin by geological and digital tectonic geomorphology analyses. Active Vegetations Can Be Differentiated from Chronic Vegetations by Visual Inspection of Standardized Two-Dimensional Echocardiograms

The ability to differentiate active from chronic valvular vegetations (VEGs) by digital image processing and by visual observation was evaluated in 18 patients with a clinical diagnosis of infective endocarditis (IE). Two-dimensional echocardiographic (2-DE) examinations were performed on all patients at diagnosis and after a mean period of 52 days. Two comparable images (active and chronic) from the same patient and in the same phase of the cardiac cycle were digitized, magnified, and displayed on a high resolution monitor. The mean pixel intensity (MPI) was 72 ± 14 in the active stage and 143 ± 23 in the chronic stage (P < 0.0001). The VEG size was 0.64 ± 0.15 cm2 in the active stage and decreased to 0.46 ± 0.17 cm2 in the chronic stage (P < 0.001). Two experienced echocar-diographers, who were blinded to the age of the VEGs, identified each echocardiographic image as active or chronic based on visual observation of density of the VEGs. The VEGs were correctly identified as active or chronic in 17 out of the 18 patients. In summary, although digital image processing of 2-DE may be useful, the density of VEGs assessed by visual inspection will help differentiate between active and chronic VEGs of IE. The standardization procedure at the time of the initial study and use of identical gain settings in subsequent studies are key factors in making this distinction. [source]


Influence of pore size and geometry on peat unsaturated hydraulic conductivity computed from 3D computed tomography image analysis

Abstract In organic soils, hydraulic conductivity is related to the degree of decomposition and soil compression, which reduce the effective pore diameter and consequently restrict water flow. This study investigates how the size distribution and geometry of air-filled pores control the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of peat soils using high-resolution (45 µm) three-dimensional (3D) X-ray computed tomography (CT) and digital image processing of four peat sub-samples from varying depths under a constant soil water pressure head. Pore structure and configuration in peat were found to be irregular, with volume and cross-sectional area showing fractal behaviour that suggests pores having smaller values of the fractal dimension in deeper, more decomposed peat, have higher tortuosity and lower connectivity, which influences hydraulic conductivity. The image analysis showed that the large reduction of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity with depth is essentially controlled by air-filled pore hydraulic radius, tortuosity, air-filled pore density and the fractal dimension due to degree of decomposition and compression of the organic matter. The comparisons between unsaturated hydraulic conductivity computed from the air-filled pore size and geometric distribution showed satisfactory agreement with direct measurements using the permeameter method. This understanding is important in characterizing peat properties and its heterogeneity for monitoring the progress of complex flow processes at the field scale in peatlands. Comparative assessment of the water balance and hydrology of selected Ethiopian and Kenyan Rift Lakes

Abstract The study area is part of the East African Rift system, characterized by a cluster of lakes occupying an extremely faulted rift floor with geothermal manifestations. Some of the lakes illustrated contrasting water levels and size evolution over the last few decennia, believed to have been caused by various natural and anthropogenic factors. The relative importance of these factors, however, is unknown. This study attempts to present the hydrology of the lakes in a broader context, by giving more emphasis to lake water level fluctuations and to the water balance. These factors have far-reaching implications in regard to future management of the lake basin water. It also provides information on the relation of the groundwater with the lakes, and with the local and regional groundwater flow system from the adjacent highlands to the floor of the Rift. The methods utilized in this study include conventional hydrogeological field surveys, and hydrometeorological and data analyses, coupled with digital image processing and spatial analysis under a Geographic Information System environment. Ancillary supporting information has been obtained from environmental isotopes and hydrochemical data. The study results indicate the terminal Ethiopian lakes changed in size and water level significantly over the last half century. In contrast, the Kenyan lakes only exhibited slight changes. The lakes in both countries exhibit a striking similarity in their subsurface hydraulic connection, and are strongly governed by complex rift geological structures. Groundwater plays a vital role in the water balance of the study lakes. The study results indicate that future sustainable use of the study lakes demands that serious attention be given to the role of the groundwater component of the lake water balances. [source]


Fluorescence staining of human ovarian cancer tissue following application of 5-aminolevulinic acid: Fluorescence microscopy studies

Abstract Background and Objectives Application of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) for fluorescence-guided second-look laparoscopy has been shown to be a promising new procedure in the early diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma metastases. However, for assessing the reliability of this method, information on the microscopic distribution of protoporphyrin IX (PP IX) in the tissue is needed. Additionally, the selectivity of PP IX uptake is essential for a potential photodynamic therapy (PDT) of ovarian cancer metastases. Study Design/Materials and Methods Thirty-six patients with epithelial ovarian cancer and two patients suffering from fallopian tube carcinoma underwent a laparoscopic second-look procedure 5 hours after the application of ALA. In 17 patients 36 fluorescence-guided biopsies were taken from fluorescing and non-fluorescing tissues for further evaluation. Fluorescence microscopy and digital image processing were utilized to determine the presence of PP IX fluorescence. Results A specificity of 88% and a sensitivity of 100% with a negative predictive value of 100% and a positive predictive value of 91% were calculated for PP IX fluorescence on a microscopic level as marker for ovarian cancer metastases. Conclusions On a microscopic scale, ALA-induced PP IX fluorescence is confined to ovarian cancer tumor tissue sparing stromal tissues. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]
