What Is the Polity?

The sovereign state became the dominant political form in a relatively brief period that began in Westphalian Europe and continued with European colonization. Contemporary states face increased challenges from inside and outside, and a global crisis of authority looms. Although the state as a form is highly variable and not about to disappear, a growing number and variety of other polities are moving toward center stage. The initiators of this roundtable asked several distinguished social scientists interested in historical perspective how they might redraw the map of global political space to reflect better current polities, boundaries, and identities and what future changes in that map they might foresee. Each contributor approached the questions in distinctive ways. Robert A. Denemark argues for more attention to world system history. Hendrik Spruyt looks for historical sociological insights into international systems change. Barry Buzan and Richard Little predict a rapidly shifting world of postmodern states and a different zone of conflict. Janice Gross Stein focuses on the privatization of security. Michael Mann finds that states as "polymorphous' entities still have a future. Yale H. Ferguson and Richard W. Mansbach close with a discussion of their "polities" model. [source]


Emission Intensity Enhancement of DC Arc Plasma Induced by External Oscillating Magnetic Field

Abstract Direct current (dc) arc plasma with continuous aerosol supply was coupled with an external oscillatingmagnetic field of a few tens of mT and a frequency of up to 1 kHz. Such configuration was used to alter the plasma-related radiative properties. The magnetic field was oriented perpendicularly to the electric field in the plasma and forced the arc column to oscillate as a whole with respect to the surrounding atmosphere. The magnitude of the appliedmagnetic.eld controls the amplitude of the oscillatory motion. Several parameters that can contribute to the radiative properties of the plasma were investigated (arc current, composition of aerosol introduced into the plasma, amplitude and frequency of the magnetic field applied). Spectral emission from different zones of the plasma column was measured by optical emission spectroscopy (OES). In comparison to steady-state plasma, the applied magnetic field induces an intensity enhancement of emission of the most analytes considered. The intensity enhancement is strongly affected by the amplitude and frequency of plasma column oscillations, i.e. by plasma column velocity. Effects of the Little Ice Age on avalanche boulder tongues in the French Alps (Massif des Ecrins)

Abstract Lichens of the subspecies Rhizocarpon geographicum s.l were measured on 25 avalanche boulder tongues in the Massif des Ecrins to elucidate the Little Ice Age history of avalanche activity. Results show: (1) an increase of lichen size from the median to the distal zone of deposits, and a decrease from the edges to the centre; (2) three types of lichen settlement. From the uppermost to the median zone, lichens are absent, because avalanche activity is very active. Down-slope, lichens occur in two different zones: the median zone is colonized by 5,20 mm size lichens on sides of blocks protected from the abrasional action of avalanches, while in the distal zone lichen diameters are largest (>30 mm) and occur on all sides of the blocks. The spatial distribution of the lichens and their size according to elevation make it possible to distinguish different phases during which avalanche activity has increased. At high elevation, the avalanche activity was at a maximum before ad 1650 and between ad 1730 and 1830. During these two periods avalanches had suf,cient magnitude to reach the basal zone of the deposits. At low elevation since ad 1650 the magnitude and frequency of avalanches have declined. Niche separation of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria across a tidal freshwater marsh

Summary Like many functional groups or guilds of microorganisms, the group of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) consists of a number of physiologically different species or lineages. These physiological differences suggest niche differentiation among these bacteria depending on the environmental conditions. Species of AOB might be adapted to different zones in the flooding gradient of a tidal marsh. This issue has been studied by sampling sediments from different sites and depths within a tidal freshwater marsh along the river Scheldt near the village of Appels in Belgium. Samples were taken in February, April, July and October 1998. Communities of AOB in the sediment were analysed on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene by application of polymerase chain reaction in combination with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). In addition, moisture content and concentrations of ammonium and nitrate were determined as well as the potential ammonia-oxidizing activities. Six different DGGE bands belonging to the ,-subclass of the Proteobacteria were observed across the marsh. The community composition of AOB was determined by the elevation in the flooding gradient as well as by the sampling depth. The presence of plants was less important for the community composition of AOB. DGGE bands affiliated with the Nitrosospira lineage were mostly found in the upper part of the marsh and in the deeper layers of the sediment. Two of the three DGGE bands related to the Nitrosomonas oligotropha lineage were more broadly distributed over the marsh, but were predominantly found in the upper layers of the sediment. Members of the environmental Nitrosomonas lineage 5 were predominantly detected in the deeper layers in the lower parts of the marsh. Potential driving factors for niche differentiation are discussed. [source]


Seasonal changes in herbage mass and nutritive value of a range of grazed legume swards under Mediterranean and cool temperate conditions

Summary Seasonal changes in herbage mass and herbage quality of legume-based swards under grazing by sheep or cattle were investigated at four locations in climatically different zones of Europe: Sardinia (Italy), southern France, northern Germany and south-west England (UK). At each location standard treatments were applied to legumes typical of species widely used in each locality: Medicago polymorpha in Italy, Medicago sativa in France, and Trifolium repens in Germany and in UK. At each site comparisons were made of two other legumes: Trifolium subterraneum and Hedysarum coronarium in Italy, Onobrychis sativa and Trifolium incarnatum in France, Trifolium pratense and Lotus corniculatus in Germany, and Trifolium ambiguum and L. corniculatus in UK. Legumes were sown in mixture with locally appropriate companion grasses, and measurements were made over two or three grazing periods. In Italy M. polymorpha swards gave the greatest herbage mass in grazing period 1 but H. coronarium was more persistent. At the French site all legumes established poorly with no significant herbage mass differences between treatments. At both the UK and German sites L. corniculatus maintained a high proportion of legume in the sward; T. repens showed poor persistence under continuous sheep grazing in UK but persisted under cattle grazing in Germany, while T. ambiguum was slow to establish in the UK, and T. pratense proved to be of comparable herbage mass to the standard T. repens -based sward in the last year of the experiment. The concentration of crude protein and in vitro digestibility of organic matter in the dry matter of herbage showed greater within-season variation than between treatments at each site. It is concluded that, in addition to currently used species, legume-based swards containing H. coronarium, O. sativa and L. corniculatus all have potential to contribute to forage production for low-input grazing and their use merits further consideration in systems of livestock production in Europe. The role of controlled drainage under drought conditions in an irrigated area in NWFP, Pakistan,

Reductions of water and overdrainage have influenced the yield of major crops. The impact of reduced supply at the inlet from the source, drought conditions and overdrainage from the area have lowered the groundwater to a disastrous level. Thus the present groundwater level cannot contribute to the crops. A subsurface collector at its exit in drainage unit 106 was controlled to raise the watertable. The study area was divided into 10 zones. Each zone was separately assessed to analyze the groundwater impact in response to the controlled technique adopted for mitigating drought in different strategies of the canal operation. The interaction of groundwater level with irrigation depth, crop yield, water use efficiency and water saving were also studied. During the rotational period of the canal, irrigations applied in section II raised the water level by nearly 1 m. The upslope area of section III also needed a large irrigation depth. The groundwater level on the downslopes of the lateral drains in sections I and V was at the design depth of 1.1 m during the rotational strategy, while it decreased only slightly on the upslopes of the lateral drains for the same positions. Because of effective control by the collector, the watertable on the downslopes of the laterals in sections II and III was affected less while in the respective upslope area of section III it dropped more than 2 m. The water levels in section IV (both in the upslope and downslope areas along the laterals) remained very close to the design level. A significant contribution of seepage in the upslope of the collector drain considerably reduced the irrigation depths. During the canal closure period, the watertables in the study area dropped to the limit from 2.3 to 3.25 m. After the reopening of the canal, the watertables in sections II, III and IV were raised from 2.55 to 0.70 m. During this period the water levels near the canal reached the design level. The maximum yield of 6.5 tons ha,1 on the downslopes of the lateral drains in section II was obtained, resulting in maximum water use efficiency of 0.93 kg m,3. However, the minimum yield of 3.5 tons ha,1 on the upslopes of the lateral drains in section I was obtained, resulting in the lowest water use efficiency of 0.35 kg m,3 near the deep surface drain (5 m). The impact of controlled subsurface drainage in zones 2, 3 and 7 resulted in the best maintenance of optimum groundwater level and moisture content. Therefore large amounts of extra irrigation water applied (ranging from 23 to 129% of that actually required) in different zones of the controlled area can be saved for drought conditions. Le niveau d'eaux souterraines des déscentes de la vidange latérale dans les sections I et V était à la profondeur de conception de 1.1 m pendant la stratégie de rotation, tandis qu'il diminuait seulement légèrement aux montée des drains latéraux pour les mêmes positions. En raison de la commande efficace du collecteur, le niveau hydrostatique des déscentes des parties latérales dans les sections II et III a été affecté moins, tandis que dans le secteur respectif demontée de la section III il descentait à plus de deux mètres. Les niveaux d'eau dans la section IV (tous les deux dans les secteurs demontée etde déscentes le long des parties latérales) ont demeuré très près de la conception. La contribution significative de l'infiltration dans lamontee du drain de collecteur a considérablement réduit les profondeurs d'irrigation. Pendant la période de fermeture du canal, les niveaux hydrostatiques dans le secteur d'étude sont descendus la limite de 2.3 à 3.25 m. A la réouverture du canal, les niveaux hydrostatiques dans les sections II, III et IV augmenté de 2.55 à 0.70 m. Pendant cette période les niveaux d'eau près du canal ont atteint celui de la concept. Le rendement maximum de 6.5 tons ha,1 aux déscentes des drains latéraux dans la section II a été obtenu, ayant pour résultat l'efficacité maximum d'utilisation de l'eau de 0.93 kg m,3.Cependant le rendement minimum de 3.5 tons ha,1 aux montées des drains latéraux dans la section a été obtenu, ayant pour résultat la plus basse efficacité d'utilisation de l'eau de 0.35 kg m,3 près du drain extérieur profond (5 m). L'impact du drainage à fleur de terre commandé dans les zones 2, 3 et 7 a maintenu le meillear niveau d'eaux souterraines et le contenu d'humidité optimum. Par conséquent la grande quantité de l'eau supplémentaire d'irrigation celle appliquée (s'étendant de 23 à 129% deréellement requise) dans différentes zones de la zone de contrôle peut être sauvée pour les conditions de sécheresse. Compatibility and viscoelastic properties of brominated isobutylene- co - p -methylstyrene rubber/tackifier blends

Abstract Brominated isobutylene- co-p -methylstyrene (BIMS) rubber has been blended with hydrocarbon resin tackifier and alkyl phenol formaldehyde resin tackifier, and the compatibility between the blend components has been systematically evaluated. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies show that BIMS rubber and hydrocarbon resin tackifier blends are compatible at all blend proportions studied. However, BIMS rubber and phenol formaldehyde resin blends exhibit very limited compatibility with each other and phase separation even at very low phenolic tackifier concentration. Morphological studies of the rubber,resin blends by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) corroborate well with the DMA and DSC results. From the DMA frequency sweep and temperature sweep studies, it is shown that the hydrocarbon resin tackifier acts as a diluent and causes a decrease in the storage modulus values (by reducing the entanglement and network density) in the rubbery plateau region. On the other hand, phenol formaldehyde resin behaves in the way similar to that of the reinforcing filler by increasing the storage modulus values (by increasing the entanglement and network density) in the rubbery plateau zone. The relaxation time estimated from the different zones of frequency sweep master curves provides information about the influence of the two tackifiers on the viscoelastic properties of the BIMS rubber in the respective zones. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MRI tissue characterization of experimental cerebral ischemia in rat

Abstract Purpose To extend the ISODATA image segmentation method to characterize tissue damage in stroke, by generating an MRI score for each tissue that corresponds to its histological damage. Materials and Methods After preprocessing and segmentation (using ISODATA clustering), the proposed method scores tissue regions between 1 and 100. Score 1 is assigned to normal brain matter (white or gray matter), and score 100 to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Lesion zones are assigned a score based on their relative levels of similarities to normal brain matter and CSF. To evaluate the method, 15 rats were imaged by a 7T MRI system at one of three time points (acute, subacute, chronic) after MCA occlusion. Then they were killed and their brains were sliced and prepared for histological studies. MRI of two or three slices of each rat brain (using two DWI (b = 400, b = 800), one PDWI, one T2WI, and one T1WI) was performed, and an MRI score between 1 and 100 was determined for each region. Segmented regions were mapped onto the histology images and scored on a scale of 1,10 by an experienced pathologist. The MRI scores were validated by comparison with histology scores. To this end, correlation coefficients between the two scores (MRI and histology) were determined. Results Experimental results showed excellent correlations between MRI and histology scores at different time points. Depending on the reference tissue (gray matter or white matter) used in the standardization, the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.73 (P < 0.0001) to 0.78 (P < 0.0001) using the entire dataset, including acute, subacute, and chronic time points. This suggests that the proposed multiparametric approach accurately identified and characterized ischemic tissue in a rat model of cerebral ischemia at different stages of stroke evolution. Conclusion The proposed approach scores tissue regions and characterizes them using unsupervised clustering and multiparametric image analysis techniques. The method can be used for a variety of applications in the field of computer-aided diagnosis and treatment, including evaluation of response to treatment. On the use of large time steps with ELLAM for transport with kinetic reactions over heterogeneous domains

Abstract An Eulerian Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM) is considered for the resolution of advection-dominated transport problems in porous media. Contrary to standard Eulerian methods, ELLAM can use large time steps because the advection term is approximated accurately without any CFL restriction. However, it is shown in this article that special care must be taken for the approximation of the dispersive and reactive terms when large time steps are used over heterogeneous domains. An alternative procedure is proposed. It is based on an equivalent dispersion coefficient or an equivalent reaction rate when different zones are encountered during the tracking. Numerical experiments are performed with variable dispersion or variable reaction rates over space (including nonlinearity). When classical ELLAM require numerous time steps to handle heterogeneity, the alternative procedure is shown to perform with the same accuracy in a single time step. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009 [source]


Humic acid metal cation interaction studied by spectromicroscopy techniques in combination with quantum chemical calculations

Humic acids (HA) have a high binding capacity towards traces of toxic metal cations, thus affecting their transport in aquatic systems. Eu(III),HA aggregates are studied by synchrotron-based scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) at the carbon K -edge and laser scanning luminescence microscopy (LSLM) at the 5D0,7F1,2 fluorescence emission lines. Both methods provide the necessary spatial resolution in the sub-micrometre range to resolve characteristic aggregate morphologies: optically dense zones embedded in a matrix of less dense material in STXM images correspond to areas with increased Eu(III) luminescence yield in the LSLM micrographs. In the C 1s -NEXAFS of metal-loaded polyacrylic acid (PAA), used as a HA model compound, a distinct complexation effect is identified. This effect is similar to trends observed in the dense fraction of HA/metal cation aggregates. The strongest complexation effect is observed for the Zr(IV),HA/PAA system. This effect is confirmed by quantum chemical calculations performed at the ab initio level for model complexes with different metal centres and complex geometries. Without the high spatial resolution of STXM and LSLM and without the combination of molecular modelling with experimental results, the different zones indicating a `pseudo'-phase separation into strong complexing domains and weaker complexing domains of HA would never have been identified. This type of strategy can be used to study metal interaction with other organic material. [source]


Perfusion in free breast reconstruction flap zones assessed with positron emission tomography

The aim of this pilot study was to determine the postoperative blood perfusion (BFPET) and perfusion heterogeneity (BFPET HG) in free microvascular breast reconstruction flap zones with positron emission tomography (PET). Regional BFPET and BFPET HG of the adipose tissue in medial, central, and lateral parts of 13 free flaps were assessed on the first postoperative morning with PET using oxygen-15-labeled water ([15O]H2O) in 12 patients undergoing breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) or a transverse rectus abdominis muscle (TRAM) flap. The mean BFPET values did not differ between DIEP and TRAM flaps (P = 0.791). The mean BFPET values were higher in zone III compared with zone I (P = 0.024). During follow-up, fat necrosis was identified in three patients in the medial part (zone II) of the flap. However, the adipose tissue BFPET assessed on the first postoperative day from all zones of the flap using PET with radiowater was normal. The BFPET HG was higher in the control side (i.e., in the healthy breast tissue) compared with the flap (P = 0.042). The BFPET HG was lower in zone III than in zone I (P = 0.03) and in zone II (P < 0.001). In this pilot study, PET was used for the first time for studying the adipose tissue perfusion in different zones in free flaps in a clinical setup, finding that the mean BFPET values did not differ between DIEP and TRAM flaps, and that zone II was sometimes not as well perfused as zone III supporting revisited zone division. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Experimentally generated footprints in sand: Analysis and consequences for the interpretation of fossil and forensic footprints

Abstract Fossilized footprints contain information about the dynamics of gait, but their interpretation is difficult, as they are the combined result of foot anatomy, gait dynamics, and substrate properties. We explore how footprints are generated in modern humans. Sixteen healthy subjects walked on a solid surface and in a layer of fine-grained sand. In each condition, 3D kinematics of the leg and foot were analyzed for three trials at preferred speed, using an infrared camera system. Additionally, calibrated plantar pressures were recorded. After each trial in sand, the depth of the imprint was measured under specific sites. When walking in sand, subjects showed greater toe clearance during swing and a 7° higher knee yield during stance. Maximal pressure was the most influential factor for footprint depth under the heel. For other foot zones, a combination of factors correlates with imprint depth, with pressure impulse (the pressure-time integral) gaining importance distally, at the metatarsal heads and the hallux. We conclude that footprint topology cannot be related to a single variable, but that different zones of the footprint reflect different aspects of the kinesiology of walking. Therefore, an integrated approach, combining anatomical, kinesiological, and substrate-mechanical insights, is necessary for a correct interpretation. Energy Efficiency of Two-Phase Mixing in a Modified Bubble Column

Abstract Energy efficiency for gas liquid mixing in a modified downflow bubble column reactor has been analyzed in this paper. Efficiencies of the different parts of the bubble column have been assessed on the basis of energy dissipation. Prediction of the energy dissipation coefficient as well as energy utilization efficiency due to gas-liquid mixing as a function of different physical, geometric and dynamic variables of the system has been done by correlation method. The distribution of energy utilization in the different zones of the column has also been analyzed. Experiments were carried out with air-water and air-aqueous solutions of carboxy methyl cellulose with different concentrations. Dans cet article on a analysé l'efficacité énergétique pour le mélange gaz-liquide dans un réacteur à colonne à bulles à écoulement descendant modifié. Les efficacités des différentes régions de la colonne à bulles ont été évaluées sur la base de la dissipation d'énergie. On a utilisé une méthode de corrélation pour prédire le coefficient de dissipation d'énergie ainsi que l'efficacité d'utilisation de l'énergie due au mélange gaz-liquide en fonction des différentes variables physiques, géométriques et dynamiques du système. La distribution de l'utilisation de l'énergie dans les différentes régions de la colonne a également été analysée. Des expériences ont été menées avec des solutions air-eau et air-solutions aqueuses de carboxyméthylcellulose à différentes concentrations. [source]


Biotic affinities of rocky reef fishes, invertebrates and macroalgae in different zones of the Port Davey marine protected area, south-western Tasmania

Abstract 1.Assemblages of fishes, invertebrates, and macroalgae showed strong and predictable distributional patterns within the newly declared Port Davey marine protected area (MPA) in south-western Tasmania. Biotic assemblages in the eastern estuarine section of the MPA within Bathurst Channel were extremely anomalous, both in relation to biota elsewhere in the Port Davey region and also to those present along the wider Tasmanian and Australian coasts. Much of this variation was due to the phenomenon of deepwater emergence, with species in 5,m water depth in eastern Bathurst Channel possessing a mean maximum recorded depth of 200,m, compared with<80,m for the same metric when calculated for sites studied elsewhere around Australia. Deepwater emergence in Bathurst Channel was particularly notable for sessile organisms, although also evident among fishes and mobile macro-invertebrates. 2.Quantitative baseline surveys of reef-associated species were undertaken at sites interspersed among MPA management zone types and biotic community types, thereby providing an appropriate benchmark for assessing ecological changes in different management zones within the Port Davey region through the long term. Distinctive biota present in eastern and western Bathurst Channel, and eastern Port Davey, are well protected within ,no-take' sanctuary zones; however, a bias in location of sanctuary zones towards areas with little fishery resources resulted in less protection for the western Port Davey biota, which also extends along the open coast. Although the lack of high level protection for sites with fishery resources detracts from conservation goals, the Port Davey MPA nevertheless represents a major advance in environmental protection because the ecologically unique, fully protected locations are a necessary inclusion within any comprehensive Australian MPA network. Gene expression profiling of the human prostate zones

OBJECTIVE To investigate differences in gene expression in different zones of the prostate by microarray analyses, to better understand why aggressive tumours predominantly occur in the peripheral zone (PZ), whereas benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) occurs almost exclusively in the transition zone (TZ). MATERIALS AND METHODS Expression profiling of both prostate zones was done by microarray analysis. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of the top 18 genes confirmed the microarray analyses. RT-PCR with common cell-type markers indicated that the differential expression between the zones was not caused by an unequal distribution of different cell types. Primary stromal and epithelial prostate cells were used to study cell type expression in the 12 highest differentially expressed zonal-specific genes. RESULTS In all, 346 genes were identified as preferentially expressed in the TZ or PZ. A few of the TZ-specific genes, including ASPA, FLJ10970 and COCH, were also stroma-specific. Comparisons with other microarray studies showed that gene expression profiles of prostate cancer and BPH correlate with the expression profiles of the PZ and TZ, respectively. CONCLUSION Gene expression differs between the PZ and TZ of the prostate, and stromal,epithelial interactions might be responsible for the distinct zonal localization of prostate diseases. [source]


2432: Histological characteristics of the posterior lid margin

Purpose The structure of the lid margin is insufficiently understood and defined although it is of obvious importance for ocular surface integrity. In particular the histological structure of the tissues of the normal lid margin and their zonal differentiation is partly unclear. Methods The structure and function of the different zones at the posterior lid margin are explained with a focus on dry eye disease, based on the available literature on the lid margin together with own findings on the histology of normal and pathological tissues from the human lid margin. Results The Meibomian glands (MG) that are of particular significance for the integrity of the ocular surface open still within the cornified epidermis. Their obstructive dysfunction (MGD) is a main cause for dry eye disease. The orifice is followed by the mucocutaneous junction (MCJ) that extends from the abrupt termination of the epidermis to the crest of the inner lid border. The physiological vital stainable line of Marx represents its surface and can be used as a diagnostic tool for the location and functionality of the MG orifices and lacrimal puncta. The marginal conjunctiva starts at the crest of the inner lid border and forms a thickened epithelial cushion. This is the point in closest apposition to the globe, represents the zone that wipes the bulbar surface and distributes the thin pre-ocular tear film. It is hence termed as the lid wiper and pathological alterations that result in a vital staining are a sensitive early indicator of dry eye disease. Conclusion The margin of the eyelid is an important but yet underestimated structure for the maintenance of the pre-ocular tear film and of utmost importance for the preservation of ocular surface integrity and for development of dry eye disease. Zonal differentiation of the epithelium including the lid wiper at the human lid margin

Purpose The lid margin represent the "other end" of the tear film and appear critically important for ocular surface integrity, in addition to the glandular structures that produce the tears. It guarantees the thin expansion of the tear film with every blink and prevents the leakage of tears over the lid border. However, the differentiation of the lid margin zones is insufficiently known as yet. Methods The upper and lower lid margin in human whole-mount specimens from ten body donors was investigated in serial section histology and compared to the image by in-vivo confocal microscopy in four eyes with a Heidelberg retina tomograph and Rostock cornea module (RLSM). Results At the inner lid border, following the keratinised epidermis of the free lid margin, a narrow zone (100-150µm) of para-keratinised squamous epithelium represented the muco-cutaneous junction (MCJ) corresponding to the line of Marx. This was followed by a much broader zone of epithelial thickening (50-100µm) that formed a kind of cushion, reclined sharply at the inner lid border and represented the so called lid wiper which extended for about 1mm and finally transformed into the epithelium of the sub-tarsal fold. MCJ and lid wiper extended all along the lid margin from nasal to temporal in upper and lower lid. Details of the epithelial structure as well as the underlying dermal papillae in these zones were also detectable by RLSM. Conclusion Due to its location and structure, the lid wiper appears as the structure that actually spreads the tear film and is distinct from the MCJ/line of Marx. Better knowledge of the lid margin structure and its different zones appears important for the understanding of ocular surface disease, in particular the dry eye disease. [source]
