Selected AbstractsInternational survey on esophageal cancer: part II staging and neoadjuvant therapyDISEASES OF THE ESOPHAGUS, Issue 3 2009J. Boone SUMMARY The outcome of esophagectomy could be improved by optimal diagnostic strategies leading to adequate preoperative patient selection. Neoadjuvant therapy could improve outcome by increasing the number of radical resections and by controlling metastatic disease. The purposes of this study were to gain insight into the current worldwide practice of staging modalities and neoadjuvant therapy in esophageal cancer, and to detect intercontinental differences. Surgeons with particular interest in esophageal surgery, including members of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, the European Society of Esophagology , Group d'Etude Européen des Maladies de l'Oesophage, and the OESO, were invited to participate in an online questionnaire. Questions were asked regarding staging modalities, neoadjuvant therapy, and response evaluation applied in esophageal cancer patients. Of 567 invited surgeons, 269 participated resulting in a response rate of 47%. The responders currently performing esophagectomies (n= 250; 44%) represented 41 countries across the six continents. Esophagogastroscopy with biopsy and computed tomography (CT) scanning were routinely performed by 98% of responders for diagnosing and staging esophageal cancer, while endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and barium esophagography were routinely applied by 58% and 51%, respectively. Neoadjuvant therapy is routinely administered by 33% and occasionally by 63% of responders. Of the responders that administer identical neoadjuvant regimens to esophageal adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma, 54% favor chemoradiotherapy. For AC, chemotherapy is preferred by 31% of the responders that administer neoadjuvant therapy, whereas for squamous cell carcinoma, the majority of responders (38%) prefer chemoradiotherapy. Response to neoadjuvant therapy is predominantly assessed by CT scanning of the chest and abdomen (86%). Barium esophagography, EUS, and combined CT/PET scan are requested for response monitoring in equal frequency (25%). Substantial differences in applied staging modalities and neoadjuvant regimens were detected between surgeons from different continents. In conclusion, currently the most commonly applied diagnostic modalities for staging and restaging esophageal cancer are CT scanning of the chest and abdomen, gastroscopy, barium esophagography and EUS. Neoadjuvant therapy is routinely applied by one third of the responders. Intercontinental differences have been detected in the diagnostic modalities applied in esophageal cancer staging and in the administration of neoadjuvant therapy. The results of this survey provide baseline data for future research and for the development of international guidelines. [source] Magnetostratigraphic constraints on the Gondwanan origin of North China: Cambrian/Ordovician boundary resultsGEOPHYSICAL JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL, Issue 1 2002Zhenyu Yang Summary A significant gap in the middle Palaeozoic apparent polar wander (APW) path precludes polarity definition of the early Palaeozoic palaeopole for North China. This problem can in part be resolved by the intercontinental correlation of magnetic polarity patterns across small time intervals. A magnetostratigraphic study was carried out on upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician sediments near Zhaogezhuang (long. 118.5°E, lat. 39.7°N), North China. After stepwise thermal or thermal and alternating field demagnetizations, a characteristic magnetic component with normal and antipodal reversed directions was identified. These data, drawn from 49 samples, yield a north palaeopole at long. 294.6°E, lat. 32.9°N (dp = 3.0°, dm = 5.3°). A concordant magnetic polarity pattern around the Cambrian,Ordovician boundary and lowest Ordovician obtained from different continents favours a Southern Hemisphere origin (,17°) formation site. Using the Cambrian,Ordovician APW paths between North China and Gondwana, we suggest that the North China block (NCB) was part of Gondwana during the Cambro,lowest Ordovician, and started breaking away from Gondwana in the lower Ordovician. This finding is contrary to some palaeomagnetic models where the NCB was quite separate from Gondwana in the late Proterozoic, and was attached to the ,Pacific' side of Antarctica. [source] Why are very large herbivores absent from Australia?JOURNAL OF BIOGEOGRAPHY, Issue 4 2000A new theory of micronutrients Abstract Aim We propose a Megacatalyst Theory, based on the pivotal role of the micronutrients iodine (I), cobalt (Co) and selenium (Se), in answer to the body size anomaly of herbivores on different continents, and the previously unexplained absence of megaherbivores in certain environments. Location It is anomalous that megaherbivores are absent from Australia while present in even dry and nutrient-poor parts of southern Africa, and that they have been exterminated from the Americas, but not south-east Asia. Methods We hypothesize that I, Co and Se are micronutrients in quantity, but megacatalysts in effect, determining maximum body size and pace of life, hence whether energy is used by animals or fire. The Megacatalyst Theory suggests that the greater the reproductive rate and brain size relative to body size, the greater the probable demand for I, Co and Se. Results Balanced supply of I, Co and Se, within narrow tolerances, is elusive because of disparate cycles: I gravitates towards the sea, whereas Co and Se are concentrated in ultramafics and organic shales, respectively. Sufficiency of these micronutrients, at less than toxic concentrations, is vital for rapid metabolism and growth, particularly of the nervous system. Iodine controls thermogenesis, Co controls the gut fermentation supplying herbivores, and Se controls biochemical damage where both processes occur rapidly. The supply of Co allows vegetation to be metabolized instead of combusted, by promoting digestion of fibre by gut microbes. Herbivores demand I, Co and Se in greater concentrations than palatable plants necessarily contain, as an increasing proportion of energy is fermented from fibre with increasing body size. Economy of scale is limited by loss of I in urine (partly compensated by thyroid size), Co in faeces (partly compensated by gut compartments), and Se both ways. Main conclusions The larger the herbivore species, the more it may depend on supplementation in order to survive predation by humans. As body mass increases, Co becomes deficient before I, because it is essential for rumination, and cannot be absorbed by the skin. Moderate uplift of a fairly flat landscape sustainably supplies I from mineralized springs, and Co from rocks (and Se from both), avoiding the excess of I in the sea and the excess of Co on high mountains. Iodine and Se leached to groundwater under dry climates are inaccessible to herbivores on a continent as flat as Australia, where even kangaroos have limited fecundity and intelligence compared to southern African ruminants of similar body mass. Where springs and associated earth-licks were available in the late Pleistocene, megaherbivores could evolve to survive the era of domestication. [source] Validity of species status of the parasitic mite Otodectes cynotisMEDICAL AND VETERINARY ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 2 2002J. Lohse Abstract A combined molecular and phenotypic approach was used to determine whether ear mites of the genus Otodectes (Acari: Psoroptidae) belong to a single species. The second internal transcribed spacer (ITS 2) of the rDNA of 16 isolates from 11 cats, two dogs, one arctic fox and two ferrets originating from four different continents was characterized. In addition, mites from dog, cat and arctic fox were investigated morphologically. Sequence comparisons revealed five different, but closely related genotypes which did not segregate according to host species or geographical origin. Morphologically, mites of the three host species did not differ significantly in their body or leg sizes. These investigations support the view that ear mites of the genus Otodectes from different hosts and geographical origins belong to a single species, Otodectes cynotis (Hering). [source] Composition, geographical affinities and endemism of the Iberian Peninsula orchid floraNORDIC JOURNAL OF BOTANY, Issue 3-4 2007Sonia Bernardos The orchid flora of the Iberian Peninsula is relatively well known, but its biogeographical and diversity patterns have until now remained unanalysed. This work compares the richness of this flora with that of 27 other territories in different continents and at different latitudes, with the aim of establishing whether it is richer or poorer than might be expected. Latitude was found to be an excellent predictor of regional orchid species richness. With 122 taxa, the orchid flora of the Iberian Peninsula is more or less as diverse as that of other Mediterranean areas of similar latitude (e.g. France, Greece or Italy), but more diverse than other European or indeed North African orchid floras. In this study, the Iberian orchid species were assigned to eight monophyletic clades and the global distribution of these are mapped to establish continental affinities between the floras. A recent floristic account on the Iberian orchids was also used to assign the orchid taxa to habitats, and the relationship between the number of endemisms and their habitats was analysed. The patterns of endemism differed in different habitats. Very high levels of endemism were found in habitats peculiar to the Mediterranean Basin, indicating the relict status of its orchid flora. This article presents a collection of regional science books that long-standing members of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI) identified as path-breaking books. The most frequently nominated books include the "classics" by Isard, the seminal books in urban economics by Alonso, Muth and Mills, methods books by Miernyk, Wilson, Anselin, and Cliff and Ord, textbooks by Beckmann and Richardson, as well as the recent contribution by Fujita, Krugman and Venables. Reviews of these books, written by leading scholars from different continents, make up the major contribution of this article and are a testimony to the far-reaching influence of regional science in the academic literature. [source] Use of film for community conservation education in primate habitat countriesAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 5 2010Juliet H. Wright Abstract Wildlife films have become an integral part of broadcast schedules in developed countries. As charismatic mammals, primates are frequently the focus of the wildlife filmmaker's attention. Yet the people watching these films tend to be situated on different continents from the species concerned. Communities in primate habitat countries are unlikely to ever have the opportunity to gain such an insight into the species with which they share their environment and the threats these species face. Over recent years, an increasing number of filmmakers are realizing the importance of reaching local audiences through film for conservation purposes. Published research on the impact films can have on eliciting conservation action in developed or developing countries is minimal. The perceived power of wildlife films to change attitudes and behaviors is largely based on anecdotal evidence. This commentary highlights the on-going debate regarding the conservation impact of wildlife films, discusses the work of various NGOs that are using films for conservation purposes in habitat countries and makes recommendations with regards to the film type and situational context necessary to promote positive conservation behavior in communities. Bespoke conservation films convey a specific message to a specific audience at a particular point in time. If produced by trained local conservation educators, these films are likely to have the biggest impact. Films must be shown as a part of a conservation education program that incorporates other education materials and group discussion so that the desired conservation message can be clearly defined and reinforced. Audiences should not be made to feel disillusioned, depressed or vilified by the content of wildlife films. Rather films should increase support for conservation and empower people to act. Once enthusiasm for specific conservation actions has been created, practical assistance and follow-up support is necessary to ensure ideas are implemented. Am. J. JIN We genotyped 64 dinucleotide microsatellite repeats in individuals from populations that represent all inhabited continents. Microsatellite summary statistics are reported for these data, as well as for a data set that includes 28 out of 30 loci studied by Bowcock et al. (1994) in the same individuals. For both data sets, diversity statistics such as heterozygosity, number of alleles per locus, and number of private alleles per locus produced the highest values in Africans, intermediate values in Europeans and Asians, and low values in Americans. Evolutionary trees of populations based on genetic distances separated groups from different continents. Corresponding trees were topologically similar for the two data sets, with the exception that the (,,)2 genetic distance reliably distinguished groups from different continents for the larger data set, but not for the smaller one. Consistent with our results from diversity statistics and from evolutionary trees, population growth statistics Sk and ,, which seem particularly useful for indicating recent and ancient population size changes, confirm a model of human evolution in which human populations expand in size and through space following the departure of a small group from Africa.
