Using dendronal signatures for feature extraction and retrieval

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF IMAGING SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 4 2000
    Luojian Chen
A dendrone is a hierarchical thresholding structure that can be automatically generated from a complex image. The dendrone structure captures the connectedness of objects and subobjects during successive brightness thresholding. Based on connectedness and changes in intensity contours, dendronic representations of objects in images capture the coarse-to-fine unfolding of finer and finer detail, creating a unique signature for target objects that is invariant to lighting, scale, and placement of the object within the image. Subdendrones within the hierarchy are recognizable as objects within the picture. Complex composite images can be autonomously analyzed to determine if they contain the unique dendronic signatures of particular target objects of interest. In this paper, we describe the initial design of the dendronic image characterization environment (DICE) for the generation of dendronic signatures from complex multiband remote imagery. By comparing subdendrones within an image to dendronic signatures of target objects of interest, DICE can be used to match/retrieve target features from a library of composite images. The DICE framework can organize and support a number of alternative object recognition and comparison techniques, depending on the application domain. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Cambrian high-resolution biostratigraphy and carbon isotope chemostratigraphy in Scania, Sweden: first record of the SPICE and DICE excursions in Scandinavia

    LETHAIA, Issue 1 2009
    PER AHLBERG
A core drilling (Andrarum-3), from the classical locality at Andrarum, Scania, southernmost Sweden, penetrated a 28.90-m-thick Cambrian succession. The core comprises dark grey to black, finely laminated mudstones and shales with early concretionary carbonate lenses (stinkstones or orsten) and a few primary carbonate beds. The middle Cambrian (provisional Series 3) part of the core comprises 17.35 m, whereas the Furongian Series (upper Cambrian) part covers the remaining 11.55 m. Nineteen trilobite and two phosphatocopine genera are present in the middle Cambrian, whereas the less diverse Furongian interval yielded four trilobite and three phosphatocopine genera. Other, less frequent, faunal elements include conodonts (s. l.), brachiopods, sponge spicules, bradoriids, and coprolites. Trilobites and phosphatocopines were used to subdivide the core into seven biozones ranging from the Ptychagnostus atavus Zone to the Parabolina spinulosa Zone (P. spinulosa Subzone). Carbon isotopic analyses (,13Corg) through the core show two important excursions, the negative DrumIan Carbon isotope Excursion (DICE) in the Pt. atavus Zone, and the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) beginning near the first appearance of Glyptagnostus reticulatus and extending upward into the Olenus and Agnostus (Homagnostus) obesus Zone. The DICE displays a peak value, in the samples at hand, of ,30.45,,13Corg in the lower part of the P. atavus Zone. The ,13Corg values increase through the overlying L. laevigata and A. pisiformis zones and display peak values of c. ,28.00,,13Corg in the lowermost Furongian Olenus wahlenbergi and O. attenuatus subzones. Thereafter the values decrease significantly through the O. scanicus Subzone. Both isotopic excursions have been documented from several palaeocontinents, but never before from Baltica. Moreover, for the first time these excursions are recorded from organic matter in an alum shale setting. The recorded shift of +1.50,2.00,,13Corg is approximately half the magnitude of the SPICE documented from other regions. This discrepancy may be related to temporal variations in the type, origin, or diagenesis of the organic fraction analysed. [source]

Deuterated analogues of 4,8-dimethyldecanal, the aggregation pheromone of Tribolium castaneum: synthesis and pheromonal activity

JOURNAL OF LABELLED COMPOUNDS AND RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS, Issue 13 2004
    Junheon Kim
Abstract To elucidate the deuterium isotope effect (DIE) in pheromonal activity and to investigate the biosynthetic pathway of 4,8-dimethyldecanal (4,8-DMD; 1), the aggregation pheromone of the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), deuterated analogues of 4,8-DMDs (2, 3, 4, and 5), were synthesized and their pheromonal activities were tested using a two-hole pitfall olfactometer. Although no apparent DIE was observed in their pheromonal activities, 4,8-DMD- 1-d1 (2) was less attractive than other analogues, which suggested that the bond distance between the formyl group of 1 and its receptor was critical in pheromone recognition by T. castaneum. Magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of (deep infiltrating) endometriosis: The value of diffusion-weighted imaging

JOURNAL OF MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING, Issue 5 2010
    M.P.H. Busard MD
Abstract Purpose To assess the value of magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the evaluation of deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). Materials and Methods In a prospective single-center study, DWI was added to the standard MRI protocol in 56 consecutive patients with known or suspected endometriosis. Endometriotic lesions as well as (functional) ovarian cysts were analyzed for location, size, and signal intensity on T1, T2, and DWI. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were calculated using b-values of 50, 400, 800, and 1200 s/mm2. Statistical analysis included the Spearman correlation coefficient, Mann,Whitney U, and Kruskal,Wallis tests. Results A total of 112 lesions (62 endometrial cysts and 48 DIE) were detected, 60 of which were large enough to analyze. Mean ADC values of endometrial cysts and functional ovarian cysts were 1.11 × 10,3/mm2/s and 2.14 × 10,3/mm2/s, respectively. Mean ADC values of DIE retrocervical, infiltrating the colon, and bladder were 0.70 × 10,3/mm2/s, 0.79 × 10,3/mm2/s, and 0.76 × 10,3/mm2/s, respectively. ADC values of DIE did not show a significant difference between varying pelvic locations (P = 0.63). Conclusion Results of our study suggest that ADC values of DIE are consistently low, without significant difference between pelvic locations. J. Magn. Reson. Mechanism of metabolic activation and DNA adduct formation by the human carcinogen diethylstilbestrol: The defining link to natural estrogens

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CANCER, Issue 6 2009
    Muhammad Saeed
Abstract Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a human carcinogen, based on sufficient epidemiological evidence. DES is mainly metabolized to its catechol, 3,-hydroxyDES (3,-OH-DES), which can further oxidize to DES-3,,4,-quinone (DES-3,,4,-Q). Similarly to estradiol-3,4-quinone, the reaction of DES-3,,4,-Q with DNA would form the depurinating 3,-OH-DES-6,-N3Ade and 3,-OH-DES-6,-N7Gua adducts. To prove this hypothesis, synthesis of DES-3,,4,-Q by oxidation of 3,-OH-DES with Ag2O was tried; this failed due to instantaneous formation of a spiro -quinone. Oxidation of 3,-OH-DES by lactoperoxidase or tyrosinase in the presence of DNA led to the formation of 3,-OH-DES-6,-N3Ade and 3,-OH-DES-6,-N7Gua adducts. These adducts were tentatively identified by LC-MS/MS as 3,-OH-DES-6,-N3Ade, m/z = 418 [M+H]+, and 3,-OH-DES-6,-N7Gua, m/z = 434 [M+H]+. Demonstration of their structures derived from their oxidation by MnO2 to the DES quinone adducts and subsequent tautomerization to the dienestrol (DIES) catechol adducts, which are identical to the standard 3,-OH-DIES-6,-N3Ade, m/z = 416 [M+H]+, and 3,-OH-DIES-6,-N7Gua, m/z = 432 [M+H]+, adducts. The reaction of DIES-3,,4,-Q or lactoperoxidase-activated 3,-OH-DIES with DNA did not produce any depurinating adducts, due to the dienic chain being perpendicular to the phenyl planes, which impedes the intercalation of DIES into the DNA. Enzymic oxidation of 3,-OH-DES suggests that the catechol of DES intercalates into DNA and is then oxidized to its quinone to yield N3Ade and N7Gua adducts. These results suggest that the common denominator of tumor initiation by the synthetic estrogen DES and the natural estrogen estradiol is formation of their catechol quinones, which react with DNA to afford the depurinating N3Ade and N7Gua adducts. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Good properties of similarity measures and their complementarity

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 10 2010
    Leo Egghe
Similarity measures, such as the ones of Jaccard, Dice, or Cosine, measure the similarity between two vectors. A good property for similarity measures would be that, if we add a constant vector to both vectors, then the similarity must increase. We show that Dice and Jaccard satisfy this property while Cosine and both overlap measures do not. Adding a constant vector is called, in Lorenz concentration theory, "nominal increase" and we show that the stronger "transfer principle" is not a required good property for similarity measures. Another good property is that, when we have two vectors and if we add one of these vectors to both vectors, then the similarity must increase. Now Dice, Jaccard, Cosine, and one of the overlap measures satisfy this property, while the other overlap measure does not. Also a variant of this latter property is studied. [source]

New relations between similarity measures for vectors based on vector norms

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 2 2009
    Leo Egghe
The well-known similarity measures Jaccard, Salton's cosine, Dice, and several related overlap measures for vectors are compared. While general relations are not possible to prove, we study these measures on the "trajectories" of the form , where a > 0 is a constant and ||·|| denotes the Euclidean norm of a vector. In this case, direct functional relations between these measures are proved. For Jaccard, we prove that it is a convexly increasing function of Salton's cosine measure, but always smaller than or equal to the latter, hereby explaining a curve, experimentally found by Leydesdorff. All the other measures have a linear relation with Salton's cosine, reducing even to equality, in case a = 1. Hence, for equally normed vectors (e.g., for normalized vectors) we, essentially, only have Jaccard's measure and Salton's cosine measure since all the other measures are equal to the latter. God Does Not Play Dice: Causal Determinism and Preschoolers' Causal Inferences

    CHILD DEVELOPMENT, Issue 2 2006
    Laura E. Schulz
Three studies investigated children's belief in causal determinism. If children are determinists, they should infer unobserved causes whenever observed causes appear to act stochastically. In Experiment 1, 4-year-olds saw a stochastic generative cause and inferred the existence of an unobserved inhibitory cause. Children traded off inferences about the presence of unobserved inhibitory causes and the absence of unobserved generative causes. In Experiment 2, 4-year-olds used the pattern of indeterminacy to decide whether unobserved variables were generative or inhibitory. Experiment 3 suggested that children (4 years old) resist believing that direct causes can act stochastically, although they accept that events can be stochastically associated. Children's deterministic assumptions seem to support inferences not obtainable from other cues. [source]

Innovate or Die: Is that a Fact?

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION MANAGEMENT, Issue 3 2003
    Isaac Getz
,Innovate or die'. This mantra has been repeated so many times , by the media, governments, business leaders, business professors, consultants and management gurus , that people have come to assume it is actually true. This article explores why have business leaders been so prone to fall for such a naïve message, and shows how it has caused them to overlook the true sources of long-term high performance. [source]

Improving the Evaluation of Rural Development Policy Pour une meilleure évaluation de la politique de développement rural Die Evaluation der Politik zur Entwicklung des ländlichen Raums verbessern

    EUROCHOICES, Issue 1 2010
    David Blandford
Summary Improving the Evaluation of Rural Development Policy A previous EuroChoices (Vol. 7, No. 1) compared and contrasted approaches to rural development policy in the EU and US. This Special Issue focuses on the evaluation of these policies, drawing on a workshop held in June 2009 at OECD Conference Center in Paris. Evaluation is an activity that runs parallel with policymaking and is capable of contributing to effectiveness and efficiency at all stages. Evaluators, wherever they work and whatever aspect of rural development is their focus, face some common technical problems. These include multiple (and often ill-defined) policy objectives, the choice of appropriate indicators (especially the need to distinguish between outputs and outcomes), how to establish baseline values, where to draw boundaries in terms of impact and time, and the identification of additionality and causality. Ensuring that lessons learned from evaluation are actually applied is problematic. Experiences covered in this Issue include the use of macro and case-study approaches, and various schemes (investment in human and social capital, and agri-environment and forestry). There is an inherent tension between using a common approach across countries and regions in the interests of comparability and the flexibility needed to capture all the relevant factors in the diverse situations in which rural development actions take place. CAP Reform in the Dairy Sector: Remove Export Subsidies and Retain Milk Quota

    EUROCHOICES, Issue 2 2004
    Zohra Bouamra-Mechemache
Summary CAP Reform in the Dairy Sector: Remove Export Subsidies and Retain Milk Quota The reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy of June 2003 introduced major policy changes, In the dairy sector the aim is to decrease price distortions between the EU and world dairy markets through successive reductions in milk intervention prices. However, the milk quota system is still in place and successive increases in milk quotas are planned. The question is whether these dairy reforms are going in the right direction given the three main characteristics of the EU dairy sector. First the price inelasticity of both milk supply (due to quota) and domestic demand means that price distortion mainly affects the distribution of economic surplus between consumers and producers but does not generate significant net losses in economic welfare. Second, the ,large country' position of the EU on the world market means that the EU should remove all export subsidies, which will reduce EU exports and increase world prices. Third, the projected increase in EU aggregate demand for milk favours a reduction in all subsidies. The CAP is going in the right direction in the dairy sector. But to reduce price distortions all subsidies should be removed as soon as possible and the milk production quota should be retained. [source]

Hungarian Agriculture at the Dawn of EU Accession

    EUROCHOICES, Issue 1 2004
    Imre Nemeth
Summary Hungarian AgricuIture at the Dawn of EU Accession Hungary and Hungarian agriculture nurse high hopes for EU-accession. Agriculture and rural development were of pivotal importance during the accession negotiations, in the accession referendum and the preparations for accession. The success in integrating our agriculture into the CAP and the single market will substantially influence public opinion in the post-accession years. We expect our membership to stabilise market conditions and to improve development possibilities in rural areas where there is great demand for better employment and living conditions. These benefits will emerge from our integration into the single market, our involvement in decision-making and from the backing of EU resources. But the challenges of EU membership also evoke fears amongst Hungarian farmers. The transformation of agriculture is incomplete, agricultural incomes and investments are stagnant, rural infrastructure is somewhat weak and marketing systems are rather inefficient. Hungarian farmers have difficulty accepting the relatively low levels of direct aids whereas they face full health and food safety restrictions from day one of accession. The CAP Reform of June 2003 confuses and slows down our preparatory work. Hungarian agriculture, however, is determined to respond to the challenges of accession. Our common Europe will prove stronger with Hungarian agriculture, and Hungarian agriculture has to become stronger through our EU membership. [source]

Relationships in Taraxacum section Arctica s.l. (Asteraceae, Cichorieae) and allies based on nrITS

    FEDDES REPERTORIUM, Issue 1-2 2009
    I. Uhlemann
nrITS sequences of 19 Taraxacum -species as well as four outgroups of Asteraceae-Cichorieae were analysed using Bayesian and parsimony analyses in order to establish their systematics. The Arctica s.l. clade together with T. bessarabicum is sister to all derived European and South American taxa. The division of Arctica s.l. into smaller units (sections: Antarctica, Arctica s. str., Australasica) is supported. Within the remaining taxa, Taraxacum farellonicum, a species from the Chilean Andes which is described as new, is supposed to be a hybrid of T. gilliesii and an introduced Ruderalia -species. Section Erythrosperma is well separated and supported. With the exception of T. patagonicum and T. bracteatum which are sister to the other representatives of the European taxa two groups are distinguished: first the Ruderalia/Hamata alliance (including T. tenebricans with some exceptional characters) of predominantly ruderal species and second an assemblage of the sections Celtica, Fontana, Macrodonta, Palustria and Taraxacum prefering a lesser ruderal habitate. A contribution to the phylogeny of annual species of Astragalus (Fabaceae) in the Old World using hair micromorphology and other morphological characters

    FEDDES REPERTORIUM, Issue 5-6 2007
    F. Taeb
A cladistic analysis including 32 annual and nine perennial species of Astragalus along with four outgroups from related genera is performed using characters from hair micromorphology, floral morphology and some other morphological sources. The hair characters show the similar evolutionary trends as known earlier for the genus Astragalus, but they exhibit lower variability in comparison with other major subgroups of Astragalus. The obtained data was compared with the data from molecular systematics. The most important results of this study are: 1) medifixed hairs are developed at least two times among annual Astragalus, 2) fruit morphology, does not provide strong evidence in delimitation of the sections within annual Astragalus, 3) presence of long and thick hairs with largely tuberculate base should be considered as an advanced character, and can be regarded as an important synapomorphy among annual Astragalus, 4) the position of some species of the large and heterogeneous sect. Sesamei, e.g. A. persepolitanus and A. coronilla, and their possible close relationship with the species of the sect. Oxyglottis should be re-assessed, 5) the species of the sect. Ankylotus show close relationship to sect. Platyglottis, based on floral morphology and hair characters, 6) there are not enough supports from hair, floral morphology and biogeography for considering A. annularis, A. epiglottis (as Glottis epiglottis), A. pelecinus (as Biserrula pelecinus) and A. vogelii (as Podlechiella vogelii) as separated from Astragalus (as suggested by molecular data). Moreover, the inclusion of Barnebyella calycina again in Astragalus is well supported by morphological data. Sesamei, z. B. A. persepolitanus und A. coronilla und ihre möglicherweise enge Verwandtschaft mit den Arten der Sekt. Oxyglottis sollte neu beurteilt werden. 5. Platyglottis; 6. [source]

Delimiting morphologically identical varieties of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] using lipoxygenase activitity level

    FEDDES REPERTORIUM, Issue 3-4 2005
    M. S. Ayodele
The occurrence of beany flavour resulting from lipoxygenase activity in soybeans was sufficiently manifested in all the 22 varieties of soybean investigated. There were significant differences in the level of lipoxygenase activity among varieties. A positive correlation was observed between lipoxygenase activity and beany flavour. Lipoxygenase activity level was found reliable in delimiting the varieties. A considerable degree of overlaps and associations were observed among the varietal grouping based on lip- oxygenase activity values. Such overlaps corroborate the reported closeness of plant morphological attributes of the varieties. Lipoxygenase activity was therefore, considered a reliable chemotaxonomic tool that could be useful for taxa delimitation, where there are very similar morphological attributes that may hinder easy delimitation. [source]

    Sexual or clonal origin?

    FEDDES REPERTORIUM, Issue 3-4 2005
A morpho-ecological, molecular analysis in a patch of Ajuga reptans L. (Lamiaceae)
Spatial clonal structure and patch colonisation in Ajuga reptans L. (Lamiaceae), a common stoloniferous semi-rosette plant, were studied using a combined morpho-ecological and molecular genetic approach. Within a natural patch from a forest near Diedorf (Thuringia, Germany), the spatial clonal structure was analysed, correlating both datasets: Morphologically, characteristics of clonal growth and clonal reproduction were studied, the spatial distribution of modules was mapped and merigenet relationships were reconstructed. Samples from the patch and its surroundings, and an additional sample from Berlin were then analysed by AFLP fingerprinting using four different primer combinations to identify genets. Most divergence in banding patterns was already obtained for samples from the Diedorf forest. Within the patch, however, most samples had very similar fingerprints, indicating their belonging to the same genet and hence a clonal origin, although they are morphologically separated into three "plants". Based on AFLP data, the relationships of one sample remained ambiguous; but the correlation with morphological data helped to interpret the pattern and indicated that the sample is probably a dividual of the clone, too. The relevance of the observed vegetative multiplication (clonal growth and subsequent clonal reproduction) for patch colonisation and maintenance are discussed. [source]

Records of Bursaphelenchus spp. intercepted in imported packaging wood at Ningbo, China

    FOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 5 2006
    J. Gu
Summary From January 2003 to June 2005, samples from 3416 batches of wooden packaging material were inspected for the presence of nematodes in the Ningbo Entry,Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, China. Bursaphelenchus spp. were detected in 202 batches from 25 different countries. The following species were identified on the basis of their morphology and their intergenic transcribed spacer-restriction fragment length polymorphism (ITS-RFLP) patterns: B. xylophilus, B. fungivorus, B. rainulfi, B. hylobianum, B. thailandae, B. mucronatus, B. aberrans, B. lini, B. singaporensis, B. doui, B. conicaudatus, B. vallesianus, B. pinasteri, B. hofmanni and B. arthuri. The most frequently found species were B. mucronatus (57 batches), B. xylophilus (40 batches), B. fungivorus (21 batches), B. rainulfi (19 batches) and B. thailandae (nine batches). The pine wood nematode B. xylophilus was not only found in packaging wood imported from areas where it is known to occur (i.e. The United States of America, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan), but also from countries considered to be free of this dangerous pest (i.e. Brazil, Thailand, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy and Spain). The occurrence of B. xylophilus in packaging wood from countries regarded as being free of the nematode can most likely be explained by the global circulation of wooden packaging material among infested and non-infested countries. Our findings emphasize the need to fully implement international standards on phytosanitary treatment of packaging wood, in order to prevent further spread of the pine wood nematode, and the need for careful re-examination of the current heat treatment measures. Studies on anastomosis groups of Rhizoctonia solani isolates causing disease in two forest nurseries in Poland

    FOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 2 2006
    S. St, pniewska-Jarosz
Summary Thirty-eight isolates of Rhizoctonia spp. were isolated from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings with damping-off symptoms, originating from two forest nurseries in central-west Poland (Wronczyn and Jarocin) and from diseased seedlings grown in soil from Wronczyn nursery. Majority of these isolates (79%) had multinucleate cells and were identified as Rhizoctonia solani. The remaining isolates were recognized as binucleate Rhizoctonia spp. R. solani isolates were characterized using hyphal anastomosis and were divided into five anastomosis groups (AG). The most prevalent was AG5 (37% of isolates), followed by AG2-1 (30%) and 27% of the isolates were identified as AG4. Groups AG1-IB and AG2-2 were only represented by single isolates. The virulence recorded as mortality (in percentage) was comparatively high for binucleate and multinucleate isolates of Rhizoctonia spp. Sequence analysis of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA region was used for phylogenetic analysis. The dendrogram showed that isolates were distinctly separated based on their AG types and there was no relationship between pathogenicity on Scots pine seedlings and the AG to which the isolates belong to. The results are discussed with respect to pathogenic potential of the various AG groups. [source]

Hyperparasitic Stagonospora sp. on Botryosphaeria stevensii

    FOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 6 2003
    L. Vajna
Summary An unknown fungus, Stagonospora sp., has been found on and in stromata of Botryosphaeria stevensii Shoemaker anamorph (Diplodia mutila Fr. & Mont.) and Diatrypella quercina (Persoon) Nitschke. Microscopic investigations indicated that the fungus might be a hyperparasite of some ascomycetous fungi, necrotrophs or weak parasites on sessile oak [Quercus petraea] and turkey oak (Quercus cerris). Dual culture studies carried out with monoconidial isolates of Stagonospora sp. and B. stevensii have demonstrated that Stagonospora sp. is a necrotrophic mycoparasite which might suppress, to some extent, the natural population of B. stevensii. Botryosphaeria stevensii is one of the biotic factors causing oak decline. Morphology of the fungus and symptoms of mycoparasitic interaction are described. Stagonospora sp. found in Hungary is assumed to be identical with hyperparasitic Stagonospora sp. reported from Germany and Austria as parasite of Ascodichaena rugosa and Ascodichaena mexicana in Mexico. This is the first record of hyperparasitic Stagonospora sp. of B. stevensii and D. quercina. [source]

Variation in virulence among isolates of Armillaria ostoyae

    FOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 2 2002
    D. J. MORRISON
The virulence of Armillaria ostoyae isolates from coastal (16) and interior (33) British Columbia, elsewhere in North America (eight) and Europe (six) was assessed on 2-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings in pots during a 3-year trial. Isolates from most geographical locations infected similar proportions of seedlings, had similar average damage scores and killed a similar percentage of diseased seedlings. Isolates from the coastal region had a significantly higher probability than interior isolates that a diseased seedling received a damage score > 3 on a 1,5 scale, and coastal isolates killed a higher proportion of diseased seedlings than interior isolates. The mean damage score for isolates that had been in culture for 20,25 years was about 25% lower than that for recently collected isolates. The results indicate that the higher incidence and longer duration of mortality in the southern interior of British Columbia compared to the coast can not be attributed to greater virulence of interior isolates of A. ostoyae. The first complete skeleton of Megaloceros verticornis (Dawkins, 1868) Cervidae, Mammalia, from Bilshausen (Lower Saxony, Germany): description and phylogenetic implications

FOSSIL RECORD-MITTEILUNGEN AUS DEM MUSEUM FUER NATURKUNDE, Issue 1 2002
    Thekla Pfeiffer
Abstract The first well preserved, articulated skeleton of a young male deer of Megaloceros verticornis (Dawkins, 1868) was excavated from early Middle Pleistocene sediments of the clay pit of Bilshausen (Unter-Eichsfeld, Lower Saxony). This find made it possible, for the first time, to establish, using cladistic techniques, the systematic position of Megaloceros verticornis among Pleistocene and Holocene plesiometacarpal and telemetacarpal cervids. By contrast to the antler and tooth characters, the postcranial characters, in particular, are suitable for phylogeny reconstruction. Megaloceros verticornis from Bilshausen shows great similarity with M. giganteus of the Upper Pleistocene of Europe in its skeletal morphology, and bootstrap values (BP = 100) show strong support for the monophyly of M. giganteus and M. verticornis. The analysis yields no evidence, however, of a close relationship between Dama and Megaloceros, which has been widely discussed in the literature because of the presence of large, palmated antlers in both genera. [source]

Taxonomy, evolutionary History and Distribution of the middle to late Famennian Wocklumeriina (Ammonoidea, Clymeniida)

FOSSIL RECORD-MITTEILUNGEN AUS DEM MUSEUM FUER NATURKUNDE, Issue 1 2000
    R. Thomas Becker
Abstract Old collections, new records, and data from global literature are used for taxonomic revisions and for a new reconstruction of the evolutionary history of the triangularly coiled clymenids, the Wocklumeriaceae, and their ancestors. Epiwocklumeria applanata is first reported from the topmost Wocklum Limestone at Hasselbachtal and Drewer, and this supports the distinction of an applanata Subzone just prior to the global Hangenberg Event which wiped out the whole group. The Wocklumeriaceae and Glatziellidae record of the famous Oberrödinghausen Railway Cut and of other Rhenish sections is revised. The Maïder of Southern Morocco has yielded first Parawocklumeria patens, paprothae, Wocklumeria sphaeroides plana, Kielcensia ingeniens n. sp., and Synwocklumeria mapesi n. sp. Parawocklumeria distributa Czarnocki forms the type-species of Tardewocklumeria n. gen. Lecto- and neotypes for several taxa are designated. The variability and paedomorphic patterns of Wo. sphaeroides are discussed. The Wocklumeriaceae represent the terminal Famennian (Upper Devonian VI-C/D) radiation of a long-ranging lineage which evolved in parallel to other clymenid groups. They are characterized by sutural features and by longidomic and very slowly expanding whorls. The polyphyletic traditional Gonioclymeniina are divided into the suborder Wocklumeriina (with Wocklumeriaceae, Glatziellaceae n.superfam. and Biloclymeniaceae) and into the Gonioclymeniaceae of the Clymeniina. Gyroclymenia Czarnocki is regarded as a junior synonym of Pleuroclymenia Schindewolf which, however, does not include the ,Pleuro.' americana and eurylobica groups. Pleuroclymenia represents the ancestral form of the Wocklumeriina and also the phylogenetical link with Platyclymenia (Varioclymenia) of the Clymeniaceae. The Gonioclymeniaceae had their roots in advanced Platyclymeniidae. [source]

Die Festgesteinsschildmaschine, Interaktion zwischen Gebirge und Vortriebssystem, Kompetenz- und Risikoverteilung

GEOMECHANICS AND TUNNELLING, Issue 6 2008
    Harald Lauffer Dipl.-Ing.
The Hard-Rock Shield Machine, Interaction between Rock and TBM System, Distribution of Responsibility and Risk Single-shield and Double-shield machines have gained a significant market share. They are recommended for tunnel driving in unstable and friable rock with short stand-up time. Looking into the interaction between rock and TBM system confirms the assumption that a systematic rock support through the cutterhead or shield does not exist. But it is possible that under specific circumstances a secondary-load bearing arch is formed inside a loosened rock mass above a shield. It appears that the suspected negative effects of the cutter head on the tunnel face do not exist and that tunnel boring is a relatively gentle process. Filling up overbreak volumes with foam has proved successful in stabilising loosening rock mass. The portal areas and areas of low overburden should be treated from above-ground well in advance if necessary. In case of massive overbreak or even downfalls TBM data such as cutterhead torque and thrust or cutterhead details can influence the behaviour of the TBM significantly. As the ground risk rests basically with the owner, he has to give serious consideration to such situations. He may have to specify basic TBMdata and TBM details without imposing too many restrictions on the contractor. A trustful partnership between owner and contractor during all stages of tunnel driving is of utmost importance for successful tunnel boring with hard-rock shield machines in difficult rock conditions. ,Querelle du Théâtre': Literarische Legitimationsdiskurse (Gottsched , Schiller , Sulzer)

GERMAN LIFE AND LETTERS, Issue 1 2009
    Carsten Zelle
[source]

Extending Gregory VII's ,Friendship Network': Social Contacts in Late Eleventh-Century France

    HISTORY, Issue 312 2008
    KRISTON R. RENNIE
In the last quarter of the eleventh century, the Roman Church had a capable ruler and defender in Pope Gregory VII (1073,85). Despite his otherwise charismatic authority, however, Gregory's ability to extend his influence beyond the papacy's more immediate control of Rome and the Campagna was limited. Filling this administrative and legal gap was the emerging office of legation, developing ad hoc under Gregory VII in matters of reform and law. Papal legates such as the French representative, Bishop Hugh of Die (later archbishop of Lyons), became crucial figures in the machinery of papal government. They assumed a vital role in the transmission of reforming legislation north of the Alps while effectively widening Gregory VII's ,friendship network' to encompass influential members of the local and regional clerical and lay elite. With the assistance of this ecclesiastical office, moreover, the papacy significantly enhanced its opportunity for social contacts, thereby strengthening its hold on the more distant provinces of Western Christendom. By focusing on existing and growing social networks in late eleventh-century France, this article examines Hugh of Die's role as an instrument of church reform, and assesses this legate's impact on the larger papal reform initiative in France. Social Identification and Interpersonal Communication in Computer-Mediated Communication: What You Do Versus Who You Are in Virtual Groups

HUMAN COMMUNICATION RESEARCH, Issue 1 2009
    Zuoming Wang
This study investigates the influence of interpersonal communication and intergroup identification on members' evaluations of computer-mediated groups. Participants (N= 256) in 64 four-person groups interacted through synchronous computer chat. Subgroup assignments to minimal groups instilled significantly greater in-group versus out-group identification. One member in each group was instructed to exhibit interpersonally likable or dislikable behavior. Analysis revealed that confederates acting likably were more attractive than those acting dislikably regardless of their in-group or out-group status. Further results indicated that interpersonal behavior interacted with subgroup membership on identification shifts following online discussions. Interpersonal dynamics generally provided stronger effects on members in virtual groups than did intergroup dynamics, in contrast to predictions from previous applications of social identification to computer-mediated communication. Glucosamine sulphate in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: cost-effectiveness comparison with paracetamol

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLINICAL PRACTICE, Issue 6 2010
    S. Scholtissen
Summary Introduction:, The aim of this study was to explore the cost-effectiveness of glucosamine sulphate (GS) compared with paracetamol and placebo (PBO) in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. For this purpose, a 6-month time horizon and a health care perspective was used. Material and methods:, The cost and effectiveness data were derived from Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index data of the Glucosamine Unum In Die (once-a-day) Efficacy trial study by Herrero-Beaumont et al. Clinical effectiveness was converted into utility scores to allow for the computation of cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) For the three treatment arms Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio were calculated and statistical uncertainty was explored using a bootstrap simulation. Results:, In terms of mean utility score at baseline, 3 and 6 months, no statistically significant difference was observed between the three groups. When considering the mean utility score changes from baseline to 3 and 6 months, no difference was observed in the first case but there was a statistically significant difference from baseline to 6 months with a p-value of 0.047. When comparing GS with paracetamol, the mean baseline incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was dominant and the mean ICER after bootstrapping was ,1376 ,/QALY indicating dominance (with 79% probability). When comparing GS with PBO, the mean baseline and after bootstrapping ICER were 3617.47 and 4285 ,/QALY, respectively. Conclusion:, The results of the present cost-effectiveness analysis suggested that GS is a highly cost-effective therapy alternative compared with paracetamol and PBO to treat patients diagnosed with primary knee OA. Risikomanagement in einer sich globalisierenden Welt: Eine empirische Analyse individueller Präferenzen in 26 europäischen Ländern

INTERNATIONALE REVUE FUR SOZIALE SICHERHEIT, Issue 3 2009
    Ferry Koster
