Selected AbstractsLife table and heat tolerance of Acyrthosiphon pisum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in subtropical TaiwanENTOMOLOGICAL SCIENCE, Issue 3 2008Wei-Nung LU Abstract The effect of temperature on the life table of Acyrthosiphon pisum reared on Pisum sativum was evaluated under laboratory conditions using temperatures of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35°C. The development time of juvenile A. pisum decreased with increasing temperature (from 21.3 days at 10°C to 4.7 days at 35°C). Adult longevity also decreased with increasing temperature (from 53.2 days at 10°C to 2.3 days at 35°C). Interestingly, 70% and 25% of A. pisum nymphs reared at 30°C and 35°C, respectively, successfully developed into adults. These temperatures have previously been considered unsuitable for A. pisum development. However, adult aphids reared at 30°C and 35°C failed to reproduce. Linear regression analysis revealed that the lower development threshold of A. pisum was 153.1 degree-days above 1.9°C. Maximal average reproductive capability was observed at 10°C for A. pisum adults, with each adult producing more than 120 nymphs. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of A. pisum increased from 0.124/day at 10°C to 0.337/day at 25°C, whereas opposite trends were observed for the net reproductive rate (R0) and the mean generation time (GT). At 20°C and 25°C, the intrinsic rate of increase of A. pisum was significantly higher than at 10°C and 15°C (P < 0.0001), indicating that 20°C and 25°C are within the optimal range for the growth of A. pisum, and that 30°C is beyond the upper threshold limit for reproduction, which involves a temperature range that is narrower than that of the survival range (upper limit is unknown, but above 35°C). Abstract 1 The seasonal synchrony between the exotic predator, Pseudoscymnus tsugae and its prey, the hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae, was investigated in field cages and in the forest in Connecticut, U.S.A. from 1997,1999. 2 In early spring, egg to adult development took 45 d at 18.7 °C, 39.7 d at 20.2 °C and 31.5 d at 22.7 °C. Earliest emerging F1 adults mated and oviposited in the same year. whereas F1 and F2 females emerging later in the summer mated and reserved most of their egg complement for the following year. 3 A second generation of P. tsugae is possible in Connecticut but may be delayed by cool mid-spring temperatures. Individuals of three generations of P. tsugae, including overwintering survivors, may coexist in July and August and adults can be found year-round with A. tsugae in infested hemlock forests. 4 A linear regression model for development from egg to adult under field temperatures gave good agreement with results from constant temperature findings. The model predicted a lower development threshold of 9.5 °C and a sum of effective temperatures of 405 day °C. Development time of P. tsugae is shorter relative to its prey A. tsugae and generation time ratios of predator to prey was 0.16,0.5, with an advantage conferred on the coccinellid. 5 Overwintering ability and behaviour were determined in 1998,1999 and adults remained on infested hemlock branches throughout a mild winter, becoming reproductively active in mid-April. Peak oviposition period extended from April to July, in synchrony with peak oviposition and developing stages of two generations of A. tsugae. [source] Quantitative colonoscopic evaluation of relative efficiencies of an immunochemical faecal occult blood test and a sensitive guaiac test for detecting significant colorectal neoplasmsALIMENTARY PHARMACOLOGY & THERAPEUTICS, Issue 4 2009P. ROZEN Summary Background, The guaiac faecal occult blood test (G-FOBT), HemoccultSENSA, is sensitive for significant neoplasms [colorectal cancer (CRC), advanced adenomatous polyps (AAP)], but faulted by non-specificity for human haemoglobin (Hb). Quantified, Hb- specific, immunochemical faecal occult blood tests (I-FOBT) are now used. Aims, To (i) compare I-FOBT and G-FOBT efficacy in identifying significant neoplasms and colonoscopy needs for positive tests and (ii) examine number of I-FOBTs needed and test threshold to use for equivalent or better sensitivity than G-FOBT and fewest colonoscopies for positive tests. Methods, Three daily G-FOBTs and I-FOBTs were collected and analysed in 330 patients scheduled for colonoscopy. Results, Colonoscopy found significant neoplasms in 32 patients, 6 CRC, 26 AAP. G-FOBT, sensitivity and specificity were 53.1% (17 neoplasms) and 59.4%, resulting in 8.1 colonoscopies/neoplasm. One I-FOBT having ,50 ngHb/mL of buffer provided equivalent sensitivity but 94.0% specificity, resulting in 2.1 colonoscopies/neoplasm. By analysing the higher of two I-FOBTs at 50 ngHb/mL threshold, sensitivity increased to 68.8% (22 neoplasms, P = 0.063), specificity fell to 91.9% (P < 0.001), but still required 2.1 colonoscopies/neoplasm. Conclusions, In this population, quantified I-FOBT had significantly better specificity than G-FOBT for significant neoplasms, reducing the number of colonoscopies needed/neoplasm detected. Results depend on the number of I-FOBTs performed and the chosen development threshold. [source] Photoperiodic and temperature control of nymphal development and induction of reproductive diapause in two predatory Orius bugs: interspecific and geographic differencesPHYSIOLOGICAL ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 4 2008DMITRY L. MUSOLIN Abstract The effects of day-length and temperature on pre-adult growth and induction of reproductive diapause are studied in Orius sauteri and Orius minutus (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) from northern (43.0°N, 141.4°E) and central (36.1°N, 140.1°E) Japan. In the north, at 20 °C, pre-adult growth is slower under an LD 14 : 10 h photoperiod than under shorter or longer photophases. At 24 and 28 °C, the longer photophases result in shorter pre-adult periods. Acceleration of nymphal growth by short days in autumn appears to be adaptive. In the central region, this response is less pronounced, suggesting that timing of adult emergence is less critical than in the north. Day length also influences the thermal requirements for pre-adult development. The slope of the regression line representing temperature dependence of pre-adult development is significantly smaller and the lower development threshold (LDT) is significantly lower under an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod than under long-day conditions. The weaker dependence of nymphal growth on temperature and the lower LDT in autumn might be adaptive. In the north, increased temperature shifts the critical day length of diapause induction and suppresses the photoperiodic response in O. sauteri but not in O. minutus. Further south, the incidence of diapause in both species is low even under short-day conditions but the same interspecific difference is observed (i.e. increase of temperature affects the response in O. sauteri but not in O. minutus). This suggests seasonally earlier diapause induction with weaker temperature dependence in O. minutus than in O. sauteri. [source] Environmental sex determination, external sex differentiation and structure of the androgenic gland in the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone)AQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 15 2006Rafael Campos-Ramos Abstract Environmental effects on sex determination in Litopenaeus vannamei were studied by rearing day 1 postlarvae at three temperatures, under three photoperiods, at high density and by starving. None of the environmental conditions affected sex determination or differential development of gender in this species. From day 50, the development of the endopodite of the first pair of pleopods revealed the first external differentiation, showing a triangular structure with three setae in females, whereas a tubular structure remained in males. Juvenile shrimp sex differentiation took place from days 50,90, independent of size, only if postlarvae reached a development threshold of 150 mg of body weight and 20 mm of body length previously. Histology and scanning electron microscopy of the vas deferens revealed that the androgenic gland (AG) is a single 2-mm cord attached in the subterminal ejaculatory region, just before the distal vas deferens narrows. The AG is composed of large oval cells containing vacuolated cytoplasm, and each cell has a prominent rounded nucleus, similar to all descriptions of the AG in Malacostracans, so we assume that it should have the same function in sex differentiation.
