CHARACTERIZATION OF BEAKED WHALE (ZIPHIIDAE) AND SPERM WHALE (PHYSETER MACROCEPHALUS) SUMMER HABITAT IN SHELF-EDGE AND DEEPER WATERS OFF THE NORTHEAST U. S.

Abstract Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and beaked whales (Mesoplodon spp. and Ziphius cavirostris) are deep-diving cetaceans that frequent shelf-edge and Gulf Stream waters off the northeast U. S. coast. Sighting data collected during seven summer (1990, 1991, 1993, and 1995,1998) shipboard surveys were analyzed using a geographic information system to determine habitat use based on bathymetric and oceanographic features. Although sighting rates were lower for beaked whales, both taxa occupied similar habitats. Beaked whales were concentrated at the colder shelf edge, whereas sperm whales were associated with warmer off-shelf water. Mean sighting rates for both taxa were higher in canyon features, but only beaked whale sighting rates were significantly different between canyon and non-canyon habitat (Wilcoxon signed rank test P= 0.007). Within the shared habitat, the two taxa were separated at fine-scale based on oceanographic features. [source]


Spawning site selection by Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) in relation to temperature and wave exposure

Abstract,,, The selection of spawning depth by Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis was investigated in an experiment using artificial substrata in Lake Constance during the spawning season of 2007. The experiment compared spawning behaviour at substrata between 0.5 and 15 m depth at two sites exposed to different regimes of ship-generated wave action. The total abundance of egg ribbons did not differ significantly between the two sites, but the preferred spawning depth was deeper at the wave exposed site (5 m) compared to the sheltered site (2 m). While water temperatures could not account for the observations, differences in wave exposure may explain the different spawning depth preferences. At both sites, large egg ribbons were generally found in deeper water, and large egg ribbons occurred more frequently at the sheltered site. Because the egg ribbons of perch are likely to have a size-dependent susceptibility to hydrodynamic stress, large females may be expected to select deeper spawning locations where the effects of surface waves are considerably attenuated. Transport and settlement of organic matter in small streams

Summary 1.,After it enters streams, terrestrially derived organic matter (OM) rapidly absorbs water. Using field and laboratory experiments, we examined how this process affected the buoyancy, settling velocity, transport distance and retention locations of four types of organic matter typically found in Pacific coastal streams (,flexible' red alder leaves and three ,stiff' particle types , Douglas-fir needles, red cedar fronds and Douglas-fir branch pieces). 2.,Immersion in water rapidly changed the physical characteristics of alder leaves, Douglas-fir needles and red cedar fronds, which all reached constant still-water settling velocities after only a few days of soaking. In contrast, the settling velocity of branch pieces continued to increase for 13 days, eventually reaching much higher values than any other OM type. Dried alder leaves became negatively buoyant after only two days of immersion, while other types took substantially longer (up to 24 days) before the specific gravity of all particles was >1. 3.,We released saturated OM particles in an experimental channel and found that all particle types travelled further in a fast, shallow ,riffle' than a slow, deep ,pool'. Comparisons with a passive settlement null model indicated that leaves were retained more rapidly than expected in the riffle (by large protruding stones), while the three stiff particle types travelled further than expected (probably due to turbulent suspension) and were retained when they settled in deeper water between larger stones. In pools, passive settlement appeared to dominate the retention of all OM types, with leaves travelling furthest. 4.,These retention patterns corresponded well with those observed when saturated OM particles collected in the field were released in two pools and two riffles in a second-order coastal stream. 5.,When the experimental channel and in-stream data were combined, the retention rates of the three stiff OM types were closely related to calculated Rouse numbers (Rouse number = particle settling velocity/shear velocity), whereas the retention rate of alder leaves was not. This suggests that different physical mechanisms are responsible for the retention of leaves and stiff OM types in shallow streams. [source]


Fish community characteristics of the lower Gambia River floodplains: a study in the last major undisturbed West African river

Summary 1.,The Gambia River is the last major West African river that has not been impounded. However, a hydroelectric dam is being constructed and substantial changes to the hydrology and ecology of the system are expected. 2.,Little information is available on the impact of water impoundments in semi-arid regions on downstream floodplain fish communities, due to the scarcity of pre-intervention data. Because profound impacts on physical habitat, salinity and nutrient transport can occur downstream of such impoundments, a knowledge of the species-habitat associations of biota such as fishes is necessary for understanding likely changes and how to limit them. 3.,Fish were sampled using cast and hand nets along two transects on the floodplain, and with fyke nets in two ,bolongs' (creeks) from May to November 2005 and 2006 in the lower reaches of the Gambia River, close to the salt water front where ecological changes due to the construction of the dam are likely to be pronounced. 4.,Greatest fish species richness was associated with low conductivity, low pH and deep water. Bolongs held greater species richness compared with other floodplain habitats, probably because they acted as conduits for fish moving on and off the floodplain. Species richness and catch biomass increased rapidly following the first rains and then declined. 5.,Using a multivariate analysis, three main species groups were identified on the floodplain; one associated with deeper water, one with less brackish water and one with shallow, open water. Tilapia guineensis was the commonest species on the floodplains. 6.,The floodplains provide nursery habitats as many fish captured were immature, particularly for species where adults are mainly encountered in the main channel. Several small-sized floodplain specialists were also represented by a high proportion of mature individuals. 7.,Impoundment is expected to reduce seasonal flooding of the floodplain in the lower Gambia River, downstream of the impoundment, resulting in reduced occurrence of aquatic habitats, especially bolongs, together with lower dissolved oxygen and increased salinity, leading to alteration of the floodplain fish communities, benefiting salt-tolerant species, reducing overall species richness and probably reducing floodplain fish production. The fluvial and geomorphic context of Indian Knoll, an Archaic shell midden in West-Central Kentucky

Indian Knoll is the largest Archaic shell midden excavated by WPA archaeologists in Kentucky. Situated in a large alluvial valley, the site is not associated with a known river shoal as might be expected, making its fluvial and geomorphic setting of interest. Based on sediment cores and auger samples, undisturbed portions of the site remain despite extensive excavations. In undisturbed portions, a shell-bearing layer is overlain by a shell-free midden layer. Profiles of organic matter and calcium carbonate content for both layers are similar to those of other Green River shell middens. New radiocarbon determinations date the shell deposit at 5590,4530 cal yr B.P. Analysis of mussel species collected from the Indian Knoll indicates that shell fishing took place in a swiftly flowing, shallow to moderately deep setting of the main river channel. Overall, the prehistoric river setting adjacent to Indian Knoll was characterized by deeper water on average with variable but finer-grained substrate compared to other Green River shell midden sites. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Micro-scale sulphur isotope evidence for sulphur cycling in the late Archean shallow ocean

ABSTRACT We report in situ secondary ion mass spectrometer sulphur isotope data for sedimentary pyrite from the 2.52 Ga Upper Campbellrand Subgroup, Transvaal, South Africa. The analysed sedimentary rocks represent a transition in depositional environment from very shallow to deeper water, with strong sedimentological, facies distribution and geochemical evidence for the presence of a shallow redox chemocline. Data were obtained directly in thin section in order to preserve petrographic context. They reveal a very large extent of isotopic fractionation both in mass-independent (MIF) and in mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) on unprecedentedly small scale. In the shallow-water microbical carbonates, three types of pyrite were identified. The texturally oldest pyrite is found as small, isotopically little fractionated grains in the microbial mats. Large (several mm) spheroidal pyrite concretions, which postdate the mat pyrite, record strong evidence for an origin by bacterial sulphate reduction. Rare pyrite surrounding late fenestral calcite is inferred to have formed from recycled bacterial pyrite on account of the slope of its correlated MIF and MDF array. This latter type of pyrite was also found in an interbedded black shale and a carbonate laminite. In a deeper water chert, pyrite with very heavy sulphur indicates partial to almost complete sulphate reduction across a chemocline whose existence has been inferred independently. The combined picture from all the studied samples is that of a sulphate availability-limited environment, in which sulphur was cycled between reservoirs according to changing redox conditions established across the chemocline. Cycling apparently reduced the extent of recorded sulphur isotope fractionation relative to what is expected from projection in the correlated MIF and MDF arrays. This is consistent with regionally relatively high free oxygen concentrations in the shallow water, permitting locally strong MDF. Our new observations add to the growing evidence for a complex, fluctuating evolution of free atmospheric oxygen between c. 2.7 Ga and 2.3 Ga. [source]


Ritter Island Volcano,lateral collapse and the tsunami of 1888

SUMMARY In the early morning of 1888 March 13, roughly 5 km3 of Ritter Island Volcano fell violently into the sea northeast of New Guinea. This event, the largest lateral collapse of an island volcano to be recorded in historical time, flung devastating tsunami tens of metres high on to adjacent shores. Several hundred kilometres away, observers on New Guinea chronicled 3 min period waves up to 8 m high, that lasted for as long as 3 h. These accounts represent the best available first-hand information on tsunami generated by a major volcano lateral collapse. In this article, we simulate the Ritter Island landslide as constrained by a 1985 sonar survey of its debris field and compare predicted tsunami with historical observations. The best agreement occurs for landslides travelling at 40 m s,1, but velocities up to 80 m s,1 cannot be excluded. The Ritter Island debris dropped little more than 800 m vertically and moved slowly compared with landslides that descend into deeper water. Basal friction block models predict that slides with shorter falls should attain lower peak velocities and that 40+ m s,1 is perfectly compatible with the geometry and runout extent of the Ritter Island landslide. The consensus between theory and observation for the Ritter Island waves increases our confidence in the existence of mega-tsunami produced by oceanic volcano collapses two to three orders of magnitude larger in scale. An Early Bronze Age Logboat from Degersee, Southern Germany

In 2004 the remains of a logboat were discovered in Degersee, a small lake near Lake Constance, southern Germany. Dating to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC, it is an important find from a period with scarce archaeological evidence and only a few previously-known logboats. The vessel was situated in lake sediment and documented in situ. Our investigations can be linked to palaeo-environmental studies carried out at Degersee and adjacent lakes, and to palaeo-climatic research in the northern Alpine region. Variations in the retinal designs of pulmonate snails (Mollusca, Gastropoda): squaring phylogenetic background and ecophysiological needs (I)

Abstract. The eyes of aquatic pulmonates differ from those of terrestrial pulmonates; the latter, in species such as Cepaea nemoralis and Trichia hispida, possess conventional, cup-shaped retinas, but the aquatic species Lymnaea stagnalis, Radix peregra, Physa fontinalis, and Planorbarius corneus have retinas that are partitioned into dorsal and ventral depressions ("pits"). The pits are separated by an internal ridge, called the "crest", and on account of their pigmentation can be seen in vivo. The dominant cellular components of the retinae of terrestrial as well as aquatic snails are pigmented cells and microvillar photoreceptors, the latter occurring in two morphologically distinct types (I and II). Aquatic snails with preferences for shallow water possess eyes with both type I and type II photoreceptive cells, but Pl. corneus, an inhabitant of deeper water, only has type-I receptors, supporting an earlier finding that type I cells represent dim- and type II cells bright-light receptors. On the basis of histological and optical comparisons, we conclude that the eyes of L. stagnalis and R. peregra, species that are known to escape and seek temporary refuge above the water surface, are well adapted to function in water as well as air, but that the eyes of P. fontinalis and Pl. corneus are less modified from those of their terrestrial ancestors. Hybridization dynamics of invasive cattail (Typhaceae) stands in the Western Great Lakes Region of North America: a molecular analysis

Summary 1.,By increasing vigour and broadening ecological tolerances, hybridization between native and introduced species may serve as a primary driver of invasiveness. 2.,Cattails (Typha, Typhaceae) are clonal wetland graminoids that are known to hybridize where anthropogenic influences have resulted in distributional overlap. 3.,In order to gauge the relative performance of hybrid vs. pure Typha, we characterized hybridization and clonal growth where native Typha latifolia and introduced Typha angustifolia occur together in the Western Great Lakes Region of North America. 4.,Based on microsatellite markers, we documented F1 hybrids as the most common class at five intensively sampled sites, constituting up to 90% of the genets and 99% of the ramets. Backcrosses to one or the other parent constituted 5,38% of the genets. Pure T. latifolia was rare and never constituted more than 12% of the genets. 5.,F1 hybrid genets achieved the highest mean ramet numbers at three sites, and were second in size only to T. angustifolia at two sites; however, these differences were not significant based on site-specific one-way anovas. 6.,F1 hybrids exhibited little height advantage over other Typha classes, although there was a general tendency for hybrids in relatively mixed stands to be among the tallest genets in shallow water, but among the shortest genets in deeper water. 7.,Native T. latifolia was found growing at the shallowest water depths at the only site where it was sufficiently abundant to be included in statistical comparisons. 8.,Synthesis. The role of hybridization in plant invasions can be difficult to confirm in the absence of molecular data, particularly for clonal species where the boundaries separating individuals are otherwise difficult to discern. Here, we used molecular markers to document the prevalence and performance of hybrid genets in five invasive Typha stands covering a broad area of the Western Great Lakes Region. We found an extremely high prevalence of F1 hybrids within mixed Typha stands. This, coupled with the typically larger sizes of hybrid genets, suggests that hybrids are capable of outperforming other Typha spp. and that hybridization has played an influential role in the North American cattail invasion. Ontogenetic induced shifts in the ecology of sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus during early development

Using the non-native sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus as a model, the relationship between ontogeny and ecology was studied with a view to identifying specific morphological and physiological processes involved in influencing ecological niche shifts. Following a predefined saltatory model for the early ontogeny of sunbleak, field studies examined the temporal use of microhabitat, diet and morphological changes throughout early development. Following a dramatic shift in both morphology and ecology between the free embryo phase and the larval period, habitat use and diet showed little change during the larval period, with habitat use confined to marginal, vegetated areas and prey items associated with these habitats well represented in the diet. During the final larval step (L5), transition to the juvenile period resulted in the stabilization of relative growth, acquisition of the adult morphotype and was associated with a clear shift in diet and habitat use. During this period, sunbleak moved for the first time into open, deeper water, away from the banks, and utilized a similar range of food items to the adults. Specific relationships between form and function are further discussed. [source]


Microhabitat use and preferences of the endangered Cottus gobio in the River Voer, Belgium

Microhabitat use and preferences of juvenile and adult bullhead Cottus gobio, from the River Voer, Flanders, were studied and compared across different seasons. Water depth, water velocity near the substratum, surface water velocity and substratum type used by C. gobio differed between seasons. These differences, however, were not attributable to differences in microhabitat availability. Adults appeared to prefer higher water velocities and coarser substrata than the average ones available in the basin. Although water depth appeared to have little influence on seasonal variation of microhabitat use in adult C. gobio, juveniles preferred deeper water and coarser substrata in winter, whereas in summer they appeared to use shallower water. There was a difference in microhabitat use between juvenile and adult bullhead only in summer. [source]


Habitat preferences of European grayling in a medium size stream, the Ain river, France

The three grayling Thymallus thymallus age-classes had strong preferences for their local habitat in the Ain river. All age-classes preferred high water velocities between 70 and 110 cm s -1, confirming that grayling is a typical rheophilic species. An important intraspecific segregation regarding depth occurred, as large individuals preferred deeper water than small ones (optimal ranges=50,60, 80,120 and 100,140 cm for 0+, 1+ and adults respectively). The three age-classes had similar preferences for small substratum articles, with optimal values between 0·5 and 16·0 mm. Preference curves were generally comparable between the two sites, despite important differences in habitat availability. It is emphasized that grayling needs various habitat conditions to achieve its entire life cycle. The increasing scarcity of this species underlines the urgency of protecting lotic habitat integrity and diversity. [source]


Seasonal pattern of depth selection in smallmouth bass

Abstract The current study used a stationary acoustic telemetry array to monitor the depth selection of adult smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu in a large, oligotrophic lake in Ontario, Canada. At an annual scale, smallmouth bass demonstrated regular, seasonal changes in inhabited depths: fish occupied shallow water during the summer (2,5 m depth) and descended to deeper water (12,15 m depth) during winter under ice. Smallmouth bass remained above the thermocline in the summer, seasonal depth patterns did not vary across fish size and movements to and from seasonal depths were closely linked to the development and degradation of the thermocline. At finer time scales, smallmouth bass exhibited diel vertical migrations in summer, with fish moving to <2 m at night, and then descending to 3,5 m during the day. This pattern remained constant during the summer period examined, and varied with size such that larger fish remained deeper than smaller fish. During winter, depth did not vary across the 3-month monitoring period (c. 14 m), but small (<2 m) changes in depth were observed periodically, suggesting limited movements were occurring. Results are further discussed in the context of climate change and reproductive success for this species. [source]


A broad transition zone between an inner Baltic hybrid swarm and a pure North Sea subspecies of Macoma balthica (Mollusca, Bivalvia)

Abstract The populations of the bivalve clam Macoma balthica in the low-salinity Northern Baltic Sea represent an admixture of two strongly diverged genomic origins, the Pacific Macoma balthica balthica (approx. 60% genomic contribution) and Atlantic Macoma balthica rubra (40%). Using allozyme and mtDNA characters, we describe the broad transition from this hybrid swarm to the pure M. b. rubra in the saline North Sea waters, spanning hundreds of kilometre distance. The zone is centred in the strong salinity gradient of the narrow Öresund strait and in the adjacent Western Baltic. Yet the multilocus clines show no simple and smoothly monotonic gradation: they involve local reversals and strong differences between neighbouring populations. The transitions in different characters are not strictly coincident, and the extent of introgression varies among loci. The Atlantic influence extends further into the Baltic in samples from the southern and eastern Baltic coasts than on the western coast, and further in deeper bottoms than at shallow (< 1 m) sites. This fits with the counterclockwise net circulation pattern and with a presumably weaker salinity barrier for invading Atlantic type larvae in saline deeper water, and corresponding facilitation of outwards drift of Baltic larvae in diluted surface waters. Genotypic disequilibria were strong particularly in the shallow-water samples of the steepest transition zone. This suggests larval mixing from different sources and limited interbreeding in that area, which makes a stark contrast to the evidence of thorough amalgamation of the distinct genomic origins in the inner Baltic hybrid swarm of equilibrium structure. Self-reported water and drowning risk exposure at surf beaches

Abstract Objective: To document patterns of water exposure at surf beaches by gender and identify factors that predict bather confidence to return to shore if caught in a rip current. Method: Recreational surf beach bathers (N=406) provided self-completed data on water exposure patterns, surf activity behaviours and potential drowning risk and protective factors. Results: Relative to females, males visited surf beaches more frequently, expected to spend longer in the water and in deeper water, and more often bathed after using alcohol (p<0.05). Confidence to return to shore if caught in a rip current was predicted by confidence to identify a rip current, self-rated swimming ability, gender, times visited any beach, and age in a standard linear regression model (adjusted R2=0.68). Conclusion: The study supports explanations that high male drowning rates result from more frequent exposure to water than females at high situational risk levels. Implications: Controlled studies are required to determine the role in drowning of overconfidence, swimming ability, surf experience, floatation devices and response to sea conditions. [source]


Cambrian Fossil Embryos from Western Hunan, South China

Abstract: The exquisitely preserved fossil embryos of Markuelia recovered from the limestones of the Middle Cambrian Haoqiao Formation and Upper Cambrian Bitiao formation in western Hunan, South China are described and illustrated in detail for the first time. A new species Markuelia elegans sp. nov. is established based mainly on embryos from the Upper Cambrian. A few of animal's resting eggs, which are comparable with those of the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation, have been also found in the Upper Cambrian of western Hunan. The membrane of one egg from the uppermost Cambrian has been replaced by pyrite and the overgrowth of the pyrite crystals exhibits a unique inorganic pattern termed herein ,Pseudoembryo'. The taphonomic setting in deeper water with possible strong reducing conditions promoted the excellent preservation for the Markuelia specimens. The study of Markuelia provides not only constraint on the anatomy, affinity, embryonic development and phylogenetic significance of this wormlike animal and but also opens a new window onto the evolution and development of the earliest animals. Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) vertical movements in the Azores Islands determined with pop-up satellite archival tags

Abstract Movement patterns of 17 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) near the Azores Islands were analyzed between April and May 2001 and 2002 using pop-up satellite archival tags. Despite short attachment durations (1 to 21 days, 8.2 days on average), their vertical movements revealed much shallower distribution of bigeye tuna in comparison with previous studies in the tropical Pacific and tropical Atlantic. Depth and temperature histograms were unimodal, although overall depth distribution during the day was deeper than during the night due to daily incursions in deeper waters. Although generalized additive models showed significant non-linear relationships with weight of the fish and sea level anomaly (as a proxy for variability of thermocline depth), the effect of these variables on bigeye depth appeared minor, suggesting that vertical movements of bigeye in the Azores during the spring migration may be influenced by food availability in upper water layers. Vertical distribution and behaviour of shrimp Pandalus borealis larval stages in thermally stratified water columns: laboratory experiment and field observations

Abstract By combining field data and laboratory observations of larvae in a simulated thermal gradient, we described the ontogenetic changes in vertical distribution and behaviour of early stages of shrimp Pandalus borealis in thermally stratified water columns. Both in the laboratory and at stations in the north-western Gulf of St Lawrence, the first two larval stages appear to actively select and maintain a position in the upper layer of warmer temperatures, within the thermocline and above the cold (<1°C) intermediate layer. Stage III larvae were distributed deeper in the water column and in colder waters than the previous two stages. Stage IV and V larvae showed the highest degree of swimming activity in the laboratory and a much wider range (from surface to ,200 m) in vertical distribution in the field. The shift to deeper waters and settlement to the bottom habitat appears to happen after the fifth moult, at stage VI. We propose that the pattern of vertical distribution in the field reflects the adjustment of the different developmental stages to the distribution of preferred prey. The description of the ontogenetic change in the vertical distributions and movements of early stages of P. borealis should be valuable information for future attempts to model larval transport and dispersion, and for detecting settlement/recruitment areas using 3D ocean circulation models. The identification of the thermal habitat of the different larval stages and the timing for settlement at the bottom also provides important information for the development of temperature-dependent growth models up to the first juvenile stages. Summary 1. The native amphipod Diporeia spp. was once the dominant benthic organism in Lake Michigan and served as an important pathway of energy flow from lower to upper trophic levels. Lake-wide surveys were conducted in 1994/1995, 2000 and 2005, and abundances of Diporeia and the invasive bivalves Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) and Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (quagga mussel) were assessed. In addition, more frequent surveys were conducted in the southern region of the lake between 1980 and 2007 to augment trend interpretation. 2. Between 1994/1995 and 2005, lake-wide density of Diporeia declined from 5365 to 329 m,2, and biomass (dry weight, DW) declined from 3.9 to 0.4 g DW m,2. The percentage of all sites with no Diporeia increased over time: 1.1% in 1994/1995, 21.7% in 2000 and 66.9% in 2005. On the other hand, total dreissenid density increased from 173 to 8816 m,2, and total biomass increased from 0.4 to 28.6 g DW m,2. Over this 10-year time period, D. r. bugensis displaced D. polymorpha as the dominant dreissenid, comprising 97.7% of the total population in 2005. In 2007, Diporeia was rarely found at depths shallower than 90 m and continued to decline at greater depths, whereas densities of D. r. bugensis continued to increase at depths greater than 50 m. 3. The decline in Diporeia occurred progressively from shallow to deep regions, and was temporally coincident with the expansion of D. polymorpha in nearshore waters followed by the expansion of D. r. bugensis in offshore waters. In addition, Diporeia density was negatively related to dreissenid density within and across depth intervals; the latter result indicated that dreissenids in shallow waters remotely influenced Diporeia in deep waters. 4. With the loss of Diporeia and increase in D. r. bugensis, the benthic community has become a major energy sink rather that a pathway to upper trophic levels. With this replacement of dominant taxa, we estimate that the relative benthic energy pool increased from 17 to 109 kcal m,2 between 1994/1995 and 2005, and to 342 kcal m,2 by 2007. We project that previously observed impacts on fish populations will continue and become more pronounced as the D. r. bugensis population continues to expand in deeper waters. [source]


A simple model of the eco-hydrodynamics of the epilimnion of Lake Tanganyika

Summary 1. The ecosystem response of Lake Tanganyika was studied using a four-component, nutrient,phytoplankton,zooplankton,detritus, phosphorus-based ecosystem model coupled to a nonlinear, reduced-gravity, circulation model. The ecosystem model, an improved version of the earlier eco-hydrodynamics model developed for Lake Tanganyika, was used to estimate the annual primary production of Lake Tanganyika and its spatial and temporal variability. The simulations were driven with the National Centres for Environmental Protection (NCEP) records for winds and solar radiation forcing. 2. The simulated annual cycles of the four ecosystem variables and the daily net primary production were compared with the observations. The comparison showed that simulations reproduced realistically the general features of the annual cycles of epilimnial phosphate, net primary production and plankton dynamics. 3. The climatic simulations for the years 1970,2006 yielded a daily averaged integrated upper layer net production ranging from 0.11 to 1.78 g C m,2 day,1 and daily averaged chlorophyll- a (chl- a) from 0.16 to 4.3 mg m,3. Although the nutrient concentrations in the epilimnion during the strong wind years were high, the net production was low, which is partly because of the greater vertical mixing, produced by strong winds, exposing the phytoplankton to low light conditions in deeper waters. The simulated annual net production and chl- a agreed quite well with observed production available in the literature. 4. We envisage using this model to predict the future scenarios of primary productivity in the lake. [source]


Peat bog restoration by floating raft formation: the effects of groundwater and peat quality

Summary 1,A prerequisite for the restoration of desiccated bog remnants is rewetting the peat surface. Frequently in Europe, extensive areas are flooded in order to maximize water retention, and growth of peat mosses is often observed in the shallow zones. In deeper waters, regeneration appears to depend on whether residual peat will become buoyant and form floating rafts. 2,In order to study the initial stages of peat bog regeneration, conditions required for peat buoyancy were studied on peat monoliths collected from three cut-over bog remnants in the Netherlands. The effects of different peat quality and water chemistry on buoyancy of the monoliths, as well as growth of Sphagnum cuspidatum and nutrient availability, were followed in a glasshouse experiment. 3,Both groundwater and peat quality affected the buoyancy of the monoliths and the growth of S. cuspidatum. When groundwater containing bicarbonate (1 mmol l,1 HCO3,, pH 6·0) was applied, the pH of peat monoliths increased from c. 3·5 to c. 4·5 due to acid buffering. As a result, two of the peat types became more buoyant and the concentration, production and emissions of methane (CH4) increased. It was concluded that the increase in CH4 production, induced by the increased pH, was responsible for the buoyancy. 4,When groundwater contained both HCO3, (1 mmol l,1) and sulphate (1 mmol l,1), pH was further increased to approximately pH 5·0 due to alkalinity generated by the SO42, reduction process. CH4 production, however, decreased because of interference from the SO42,, as confirmed in additional incubation experiments. Phosphate concentrations, however, greatly increased in the HCO3,/SO42, addition treatment due to the interaction between sulphide and iron phosphate precipitates. 5,In one of the peat types, treatments did not influence CH4 production and buoyancy, most probably because of its low decomposability. The chemical characteristics of the peat, notably the concentrations of lignin and soluble phenolics as well as C:N, C:P and C:K ratios, were all higher than in the other two peat types. 6,The increase of S. cuspidatum biomass during the experiment appeared to be strongly related to the N:P ratios of the capitula, which differed considerably among the three peat types. 7,We conclude that when bog remnants are inundated the prospects for bog regeneration are largely determined by peat quality and water chemistry. Peat mats with low concentration of lignin and phenolics and low C:N ratios are most likely to become buoyant in water with a higher pH, so providing suitable environments for Sphagnum species. When peat quality is inadequate, either shallow inundation or the addition of suitable peat from elsewhere is indicated. [source]


Biogeography of common dolphins (genus Delphinus) in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean

ABSTRACT 1The common dolphins (genus Delphinus) have one of most problematic taxonomies and complex distribution patterns of all cetaceans. Although the taxonomy and the distribution seem to have been clarified somewhat in the eastern North Pacific and Indo-Pacific Oceans, many questions remain in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA). We review the biogeography of Delphinus in the SWA. 2We reviewed data from strandings, incidental catches and sightings since 1922. Systematic surveys were conducted in five major areas. Twenty-one natural history collections were examined, and 135 skulls were measured. 3A total of 184 records of common dolphins were compiled. Delphinus apparently occurs in three stocks in the SWA: one located in northern Brazil and two from southeastern Brazil (,22°S) to central Argentina (,42°S). Two distinct patterns in habitat use were observed by depth: in southeastern Brazil, sightings were restricted to coastal waters with water depths ranging from 18m to 70m. On the other hand, in the area that extends from southern Brazil to Central Argentina (from 28°S to 42°S), sightings were recorded in deeper waters, ranging from 71m to 1435m, with the exception of occasional coastal sightings. The cranial analyses demonstrated that both short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis and long-beaked common dolphins Dephinus capensis occur in the SWA. 4In the SWA, Delphinus seems to occur near areas of high productivity. One stock is associated with the productive waters discharged by the Amazon River and possibily with the coastal upwelling system off the coast of Venezuela, while the other stocks are associated with the Cabo Frio upwelling system and the Subtropical Convergence. Our results indicate that the current taxonomy does not adequately reflect the amount of variation within the genus in the world. [source]


Coral Cover Change Associated to El Niño, Eastern Pacific, Costa Rica, 1992,2001

Abstract., Changes in live and dead coral cover were documented at three localities off the Costa Rican central Pacific coast first in 1992 during the aftermath of the 1991,1992 El Niño; again in the period between 1994 and 1995, and last in January 2001. Recovery of coral communities after the 1991,1992 El Niño was expressed by a significant increase (,40 %) in 1994 of live coral cover at one locality (Manuel Antonio). A subsequent decrease (,50 %) in response to the very strong 1997,1998 episode was recorded at Manuel Antonio and Ballena, mainly due to partial tissue mortality of branching (Pocillopora spp.) and massive (Porites lobata) corals. Mortality of entire colonies associated to that event was scarce and confined to branching and nodular (Psammocora stellata) corals. This species was not found at one locality (Cambutal) in the 2001 survey and it is presumed locally extinct. The recovery of this coral and others will depend on recruits from surviving colonies in deeper waters and other coral communities in the vicinity. Within sites at a given locality, contrasting results in live coral cover variability were found. This is partially due to distinct coral assemblages, coral growth, physical exposure to tidal regime, and, related to the latter, variable duration and intensity of the warming event. In general, predominant meteorological conditions at the studied area are conducive to solar radiation (UV) stress during El Niño years and are related to changes in the atmosphere-ocean interactions in response to the warming events. Habitats and Characteristics of the Sea Urchins Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata (Echinodermata) on the Florida Gulf-Coast Shelf

Abstract Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata have been studied primarily in inshore, shallow-water areas. However, they are abundant in deeper waters on the Florida gulf-coast shelf and seem important components of the benthic communities there. Lytechinus variegatus occurs alone on sand bottoms and A. punctulata occurs alone on rubble bottoms in these deeper waters. The species also co-occur there on ­heterogeneous bottoms, each in a distinct microhabitat with A. punctulata on rubble and L. variegatus on surrounding sand. Characteristics of the sea urchins in these different deeper-water habitat types and at one nearshore site with a heterogeneous rubble-sand bottom were compared. Over the 2-year study, offshore individuals of both species had low gut and gonad indices and the maximum size of individuals did not change. This suggests food limitation and low production. Offshore, A. punctulata had a higher Aristotle's lantern index and lower gut and gonad indices in populations where it ­co-occurred with L. variegatus compared to populations where it occurred alone. The ­Aristotle's lantern index of L. variegatus did not differ among the offshore sites. Neither species seemed food limited at the nearshore site. Although productivity is lower at the offshore sites, both species extend their distribution and reproduction potential by existing there. [source]


Distribution of benthic communities in the fjord-like Bathurst Channel ecosystem, south-western Tasmania, a globally anomalous estuarine protected area

Abstract 1.Benthic assemblages in the fjord-like Bathurst Channel estuarine system, south-western Tasmania, vary over horizontal scales of 1,5,km and vertical scales of 1,10,m. Multivariate analysis indicated a total of eight major assemblages that characterize different sections and depths of the channel. 2.Because tannins in the low-salinity surface water layer block light, foliose algae reach 5,m depth in the marine western region but do not penetrate below 1,m in the east. By contrast, sessile invertebrates are most abundant below 5,m depth in the west and below 2,m in the east. Deeper assemblages are unlikely to be continuous with assemblages in deeper waters off the Tasmanian coast as they are highly constrained by depth within particular sections of the estuary. 3.While the species composition of the Bathurst Channel biota is most similar to that found elsewhere in Tasmania, the structural character of the biota in terms of major taxonomic groups is more closely allied to that found in fjords of south-western Chile and south-western New Zealand. These three regions all possess wilderness settings, high rainfall that is channelled through estuaries as a low-salinity surface layer, deep-water emergence of fauna, rapid change in biotic communities over short horizontal and vertical distances, and high levels of local endemism. They also include some of the most threatened aquatic ecosystems on earth due to increasing human activity from a near pristine base, and the potentially catastrophic impacts of climate change. Experimental sponge fishery in Egypt during recovery from sponge disease

Abstract 1.A survey was undertaken (1995) on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt that investigated four sponge fishing grounds. These fishing banks suffered from sponge disease between 1987 and 1990, causing a mass mortality of commercial sponges in the eastern and central Mediterranean. 2.Adult commercial sponges (length >10 cm) were harvested by divers in the infralittoral zone (depth range 17,36 m). The substratum at most of the sampling stations was hard, consisting mainly of plaques, rocks and heavy stones, sometimes covered by Posidonia oceanica. 3.Two commercial sponge species were detected, Hippospongia communis and Spongia cfr zimocca; the former was more prevalent and abundant. Light penetration in the area surveyed was high. The two commercial sponge species detected seemed to be well adapted to these conditions, as indicated by the colour of their external membranes, which were almost black due to enhanced pigment formation. The absence of Spongia officinalis, in the area surveyed may also be related to light penetration, since S. officinalis is a more sciaphilous species. 4.The shape of H. communis was almost spherical, and the average dimensions (length, width, height, circumference) increased with increasing depth of the fishing grounds. At shallower depths (<30 m), adult H. communis occurred in lower densities, whereas young commercial sponges were abundant. No signs of sponge disease were found. 5.It is concluded that the recovery of the four sponge fishing grounds was in progress, and that the repopulation of commercial sponges in the infralittoral zone showed a gradient from deeper to shallower waters.
