Prairie habitat currently exists only on small remnants scattered across the landscape. 2.,The invertebrate fauna of these habitat remnants is poorly known, both in terms of species diversity and community composition. 3.,Baited pitfall traps were used to sample carrion-attracted beetles during June and July of 2003 from high-quality prairie remnants of varying size and soil characteristics. 4.,Twenty-three beetle species in five families were found. Species richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity were not significantly correlated with habitat area or perimeter,area ratio. 5.,Beetle abundance and community structure were strongly correlated with soil characteristics. Deeper, loessal soils had greater overall beetle abundance than shallower, rocky soils, although some species were more frequently captured in shallower, rocky soil sites. 6.,Conservation plans emphasising only remnant size and condition do not sufficiently capture variability in insect communities across Palouse prairie remnants. [source] Cooled Needle Catheter Ablation Creates Deeper and Wider Lesions Than Irrigated Tip Catheter AblationJOURNAL OF CARDIOVASCULAR ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, Issue 5 2005ARAVINDA THIAGALINGAM F.R.A.C.P. Objectives: To design and test a catheter that could create deeper ablation lesions. Background: Endocardial radiofrequency (RF) ablation is unable to reliably create transmural ventricular lesions. We designed an intramural needle ablation catheter with an internally cooled 1.1-mm diameter straight needle that could be advanced up to 14 mm into the myocardium. The prototype catheter was compared with an irrigated tip ablation catheter. Methods: Ablation lesions were created under general anesthesia in 14 male sheep (weight 44 ± 7.3 kg) with fluoroscopic guidance. Each of the catheters was used to create two ablation lesions at randomly allocated positions within the left ventricle. The irrigation rate, target temperature, and maximum power were: 20 mL/min, 85°C, 50 W for the intramural needle catheter and 20 mL/min, 50°C, 50 W for the irrigated tip catheter, respectively. All ablations were performed for 2 minutes. After the last ablation, blue tetrazolium (12.5 mg/kg) was infused intravenously. The heart was removed via a left thoracotomy after monitoring the sheep for one hour. Results: There was no evidence of cardiac tamponade in any sheep. The intramural needle catheter lesions were significantly wider (10.9 ± 2.8 mm vs 10.1 ± 2.4 mm, P = 0.01), deeper (9.6 ± 2.0 mm vs 7.0 ± 1.3 mm, P = 0.01), and more likely to be transmural (38% vs 0%, P = 0.03). Conclusions: Cooled intramural needle ablation creates lesions that are significantly deeper and wider than endocardial RF ablation using an irrigated tip catheter in sheep hearts. This technology may be useful in treating ventricular tachycardia resistant to conventional ablation techniques. [source] Re-founding Representation: Wider, Broader, Closer, DeeperPOLITICAL STUDIES REVIEW, Issue 2 2010Lucy Taylor This article challenges conventional understandings and methodologies associated with the study of political representation. It imagines representation as a power relationship and shifts attention from elections to a closer examination of the interface between representatives and those they claim to represent. It argues for the need to make representation studies wider, moving our focus to study polities beyond the confines of prosperous, established democracies. Secondly, we should broaden our understanding of representation agents in two ways. We should consider how non-voters are represented and we should include diverse forms of social organisations, problematising relationships of representation within these groups and taking their political-representational role seriously. Thirdly, we should move closer, conducting not only macro-level analyses but also micro-level studies, exploring representation among and between individuals and groups in order to understand the complex relationships, motives and dynamics of power at work. Finally we need to go deeper, looking at our own subject positions as scholars critically and challenging the neutrality of the ideas and assumptions that we use as intellectual tools. Moreover, we should promote deeper relationships of representation, reconnecting it to ideas and practices of participation, and promoting the role of accountability in ,closing the loop' and enhancing democracy. This paper studies the thoughts, words and deeds of CR actors in their Jungian context. The aim is to help CR actors to understand different CR behaviour and to gain new insights into developing CR values, discourses and practices. This research builds on earlier psychological articles published in this journal, and digs deeper into the psychological resources of the human mind to show what vast potentials lie there to solve CR issues. Jungian theories open up the individual, organizational and societal personality and give opportunities to expand it horizontally and vertically. The Jungian prospective quality of the psyche is illustrated by three levels of unconscious , personal, cultural and collective, which can help the development of CR values, discourses and actions of individuals, organizations, societies and humankind. [source] Repair of a Large Wound of the Back, Post-Mohs Micrographical Excision, Using Chronic Skin ExpansionDERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 6 2003Ron M. Shelton MD Background. Large defects not otherwise closed primarily may be closed after chronic skin expansion. Objective. If chronic expansion were deemed indicated for the closure of a proposed defect expected to result from Mohs micrographic surgery, can it be performed before Mohs surgery, avoiding the increased chance of expander extrusion via the defect when done postoperatively? Methods. A team approach of a Mohs surgeon and a plastic surgeon coordinated scheduling an insertion of and staged infiltration of a tissue expander before Mohs surgical removal of a large basal cell carcinoma on the back of a young woman. The reconstruction after Mohs surgery was scheduled for the immediate postoperative period. Results. The Mohs surgery completed removed the carcinoma, and the expander was removed, enabling the surgeon to perform a side-to-side closure. Conclusion. Provided that there is not a great probability of the neoplasm extending significantly deeper or wider than expected and that the skin expander is placed so as not to disturb the plane of Mohs excision, this is a useful technique to close large Mohs defects. [source] Noncorrelating Pap tests and cervical biopsies: Histological predictors of subsequent correlationDIAGNOSTIC CYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 5 2005Nancy E. Joste M.D. Abstract Lack of correlation between dysplastic cervicovaginal Papanicolaou (Pap) tests and subsequent cervical biopsies raises the concern that a significant squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) may go unconfirmed. Additional tissue sections of cervical biopsies may detect SILs after noncorrelation on initial sections. Complete step sectioning of paraffin blocks was undertaken on 111 noncorrelating biopsy specimens from 95 patients and selected slides were reviewed for the presence of SIL. The initial negative biopsy slides were evaluated for four histological features: chronic cervicitis, acute cervicitis, mucosal erosion, and squamous atypia. Twenty-seven biopsies (24.3%) demonstrated the presence of a SIL in deeper levels. The presence of squamous atypia was significantly associated with the presence of dysplasia deeper in the block (P < 0.002). Acute and chronic cervicitis was seen roughly equally. Additional tissue levels are a productive way of confirming SILs, and squamous atypia allows a refined selection of negative cervical biopsies most likely to reveal an SIL on review of deeper levels. [source] A power function model for the basic geometry of solution dolines: considerations from the classical karst of south-central SloveniaEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 3 2006France Abstract Solution doline geometry is generally too complex to be expressed in terms of a few parameters. A methodology previously designed by the author, based on acquisition of specific field data and subsequent processing by various Fourier techniques, enabled doline geometry to be considered in its entirety. This paper sets out to investigate which simple rotational body (rotated power function) best fits the geometry of 38 dolines studied within the Classical Karst of Slovenia. It transpires that doline radius to depth ratio changes as a function of volume, whereas the mode of change remains stable regardless of the actual dimensions of individual dolines, and is basically the same at different locations. Doline volumes are very close of those of regular cones of the same dimensions, growing relatively deeper as the volume increases. Two poly-segment models implied by the power function model and based on earlier work are discussed. The ultimate causes of communal breeding and joint parental care in various species of Nicrophorus burying beetles have not been resolved satisfactorily. One hypothesis suggests that females remain on the carcass for extended periods of time because joint defence affords them improved probabilities of retaining the carcass successfully in the face of intense competition from intra-generic competitors. 2. In a field experiment designed to test this hypothesis in N. defodiens (Mannerheim), breeding associations of two females and a male were no more successful at retaining their carcass than were monogamous pairs, lending no support to the hypothesis. 3. Intra-generic intruders that usurped already-buried carcasses were typically much larger than the original residents. 4. The body size of original residents affected both the burial depth and the probability of a takeover. Larger beetles buried the carcass deeper and were more likely to retain possession of the carcass. Group composition also did not affect the depth at which carcasses were buried. 5. Severe and even fatal injuries incurred by some residents indicated the occurrence of violent and damaging fights between competitors over carcasses in the field. Probst Abstract,,, The selection of spawning depth by Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis was investigated in an experiment using artificial substrata in Lake Constance during the spawning season of 2007. The experiment compared spawning behaviour at substrata between 0.5 and 15 m depth at two sites exposed to different regimes of ship-generated wave action. The total abundance of egg ribbons did not differ significantly between the two sites, but the preferred spawning depth was deeper at the wave exposed site (5 m) compared to the sheltered site (2 m). While water temperatures could not account for the observations, differences in wave exposure may explain the different spawning depth preferences. At both sites, large egg ribbons were generally found in deeper water, and large egg ribbons occurred more frequently at the sheltered site. Because the egg ribbons of perch are likely to have a size-dependent susceptibility to hydrodynamic stress, large females may be expected to select deeper spawning locations where the effects of surface waves are considerably attenuated. [source] Movements and habitat use of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) juveniles in a large lowland Australian riverECOLOGY OF FRESHWATER FISH, Issue 2 2007M. J. Jones Abstract,,, Native Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) are listed as a nationally vulnerable species, whereas non-native common carp (Cyprinus carpio) are widespread and abundant. Understanding key aspects of life history, such as movement patterns and habitat selection by juvenile Murray cod and common carp, might be useful for conserving Murray cod populations and controlling common carp numbers. We used radio-telemetry to track eight juvenile Murray cod and seven juvenile common carp in the Murray River, Australia, between March and July 2001. Common carp occupied a significantly greater total linear range (mean ± SD: 1721 ± 1118 m) than Murray cod (mean ± SD: 318 ± 345 m) and the average daily movement was significantly greater for common carp (mean ± SD: 147 ± 238 m) than for Murray cod (mean ± SD: 15 ± 55 m). All Murray cod and five of the seven common carp displayed site fidelity or residency to one, two or three locations. Murray cod were found only in the mainstream Murray River among submerged woody habitats, whereas common carp occurred equally in mainstream and offstream areas, and among submerged wood and aquatic vegetation. Murray cod were found in deeper (mean ± SD: 2.3 ± 0.78 m) and faster waters (mean ± SD: 0.56 ± 0.25 m·s,1) compared with common carp (mean ± SD: 1 ± 0.54 m; 0.08 ± 0.09 m·s,1) respectively. The presence of juvenile Murray cod only amongst submerged wood is an indication that these habitats are important and should be preserved. Conversely, juvenile common carp were equally present among all habitats sampled, suggesting that habitat selection is less specific, possibly contributing to their widespread success. [source] What happens during recessions, crunches and busts?ECONOMIC POLICY, Issue 60 2009Stijn Claessens Summary We provide a comprehensive empirical characterization of the linkages between key macroeconomic and financial variables around business and financial cycles, for 21 OECD countries over the period 1960,2007. In particular, we analyse the implications of 122 recessions, 113 (28) credit contraction (crunch) episodes, 114 (28) episodes of house price declines (busts), 245 (61) episodes of equity price declines (busts), and their various overlaps in these countries, over the sample period. Our results indicate that the interactions between macroeconomic and financial variables can play a major role in determining the severity and duration of a recession. Despite sizeable deviations between the calculated and experimental values, the calculations correctly reproduce the trends in the change of the chemical shift for both nuclei. As expected, the diamagnetic term is almost constant throughout the whole series. The change in the chemical shifts is shown to be determined by the paramagnetic term, which depends on the electronic structure of the whole anion under study and, in particular, on the local geometry around a given tungsten atom. On the other hand, there is no correlation between the chemical shift and HOMO,LUMO gap, showing that deeper occupied levels and several unoccupied orbitals play an important role in the paramagnetic term. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006) [source] Peripheral axotomy induces only very limited sprouting of coarse myelinated afferents into inner lamina II of rat spinal cordEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 2 2002Lan Bao Abstract Peripheral axotomy-induced sprouting of thick myelinated afferents (A-fibers) from laminae III,IV into laminae I,II of the spinal cord is a well-established hypothesis for the structural basis of neuropathic pain. However, we show here that the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), a neuronal tracer used to demonstrate the sprouting of A-fibers in several earlier studies, also labels unmyelinated afferents (C-fibers) in lamina II and thin myelinated afferents in lamina I, when applied after peripheral nerve transection. The lamina II afferents also contained vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and galanin, two neuropeptides mainly expressed in small dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and C-fibers. In an attempt to label large DRG neurons and A-fibers selectively, CTB was applied four days before axotomy (pre-injury-labelling), and sprouting was monitored after axotomy. We found that only a small number of A-fibers sprouted into inner lamina II, a region normally innervated by C-fibers, but not into outer lamina II or lamina I. Such sprouts made synaptic contact with dendrites in inner lamina II. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) was found in these sprouts in inner lamina II, an area very rich in Y1 receptor-positive processes. These results suggest that axotomy-induced sprouting from deeper to superficial layers is much less pronounced than previously assumed, in fact it is only marginal. This limited reorganization involves large NPY immunoreactive DRG neurons sprouting into the Y1 receptor-rich inner lamina II. Even if quantitatively small, it cannot be excluded that this represents a functional circuitry involved in neuropathic pain. Owen Abstract We have exploited the complementary arrangement of afferents in a coronal slice (300,400 µm) of the rat olfactory tubercle (OT) maintained in vitro to investigate transmission in two separate synaptic pathways. We recorded extracellular responses within the OT dense cell layer in slices and stimulated either the outermost layer to activate primary olfactory fibres or deeper to activate secondary input. Superficial stimulation produced a synaptic potential with superimposed population spike. This interpretation was based on blockade by calcium removal from the bathing medium and the use of the glutamate antagonist DNQX (10 µm); the spike was found to be selectively suppressed by tetrodotoxin applied near the cells. The spike, but not the synaptic wave, was depressed by 12 mm Ca2+ and enhanced by 1 mm Ba2+ in the bathing medium. Deep stimulation to activate association and intrinsic fibres elicited a nerve volley followed by a later response, also blocked by Ca2+ removal or 10 µm DNQX. It was unaffected by high Ca2+ or Ba2+, hence resulting from synaptic and not action current flow. Removal of Mg2+ from the bathing medium revealed an NMDA component of synaptic transmission at both loci that was selectively blocked by D-AP-5. The deep synaptic response, only, was depressed by carbachol IC50 7 µm or muscarine IC50 13 µm. This depression was also induced by AChE inhibitors eserine or tacrine and was antagonized by 1 µm atropine or 5,10 µm clozapine. These results characterize transmission in the OT and demonstrate a role for muscarinic modulation of deeper synapses in the OT that is influenced by psychotherapeutic drugs. Mickovski Summary Understanding of the detailed mechanisms of how roots anchor in and reinforce soil is complicated by the variability and complexity of both materials. This study controlled material stiffness and architecture of root analogues, by using rubber and wood, and also employed real willow root segments, to investigate the effect on pullout resistance in wet and air-dry sand. The architecture of model roots included either no laterals (tap-root) or a single pair at two different locations (herringbone and dichotomous). During pullout tests, data on load and displacement were recorded. These studies were combined with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) image analysis of the model root-soil system at a transparent interface during pullout to increase understanding of mechanical interactions along the root. Model rubber roots with small stiffness had increasing pullout resistance as the branching and the depth of the lateral roots increased. Similarly, with the stiff wooden root models, the models with lateral roots embedded deeper showed greatest resistance. PIV showed that rubber model roots mobilized their interface shear strength progressively whilst rigid roots mobilized it equally and more rapidly over the whole root length. Soil water suction increased the pullout resistance of the roots by increasing the effective stress and soil strength. Separate pullout tests conducted on willow root samples embedded in sand showed similar behaviour to the rigid model roots. These tests also demonstrated the effect of the root curvature and rough interface on the maximum pullout resistance. [source] Structural characteristics of clay-dominated soils of a marsh and a palaeosol in a crossed diagramEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 5 2007M. Bernard Summary Although the shrink-swell phenomenon of clays has been thoroughly studied, the in situ relation of the shrinkage curve to the structure profile is rarely presented from the shrinkage limit to the liquid limit. We studied the consolidated structure of clay-dominated (<2 ,m) soils formed on ,pseudo-liquid' marsh sediments in the ,Marais de l'Ouest' (France). The profiles were studied in a grassland field and in a sunflower field from unsaturated surface soils down to deeper, saturated, levels characterized by a very large water content (100% by weight). The consolidation states were quantified recording cone resistance (Qd) profiles using a dynamic penetrometer in successive seasons. These Qd profiles were compared with the associated wet density and gravimetric water-content profiles. Two consolidation depths were evident, the surface soil and a 130-cm deep palaeosol. The seasonal Qd profiles demonstrate the partial irreversibility of the consolidation peaks associated with the surface soil and with the palaeosol. The shrinkage properties were established through drying curves of undisturbed test samples. In the void ratio (e) - water content (W) and water content (W) - saturation index (Sr) diagrams, the profiles as a whole exhibit only one clay soil behaviour from their pseudo-liquid to plastic to solid states. Each Qd profile is represented by a hyperbolic curve in the e/Qd diagram. Represented in a (e , W , Qd ,Sr) crossed diagram, the vertical evolution of the successive profiles shows the soil structure behaviour from the initial pseudo-liquid sediment to the consolidated soil. A simple cone resistance recording associated with gravimetric water-content profiles, characterizes the evolution of structural layers of soils for the seasonal drying-wetting cycles, for the over-consolidation associated with the palaeosol, and also for the effect of ploughing. [source] Edaphic and physiographic factors affecting the distribution of natural gamma-emitting radionuclides in the soils of the Arnás catchment in the Central Spanish PyreneesEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2002A. Navas Summary Gamma-emitting radionuclides are a natural source of radiation that can be a concern for human health, therefore it is important to know the radionuclide backgrounds in soils and to assess their mobility and transfer in ecosystems. Concentrations of natural radionuclides were determined in soils from a small catchment in the middle mountain environment of the Central Spanish Pyrenees. Radioisotope activities were well within the natural ranges for soil, averaging 27, 26, 32 and 500 Bq kg,1 for 238U, 226Ra, 208Tl and 40K, respectively. Their distributions in the soil profile were analysed along three transects of contrasting physiography and soil type. Uranium was depleted in upper layers of the soil and slightly enriched in deeper sections, while 226Ra, 40K and 208Tl were more uniformly distributed. Radionuclide activities in the Calcaric Regosols on the shrub slope were less than those in the deeper and better developed Haplic Kastanozems under forest and in Calcaric Fluvisols in the valley bottom. These spatial patterns seem to be affected by the soil type; other landscape features, such as slope orientation and vegetation cover, appeared to have an indirect effect. The results indicate that the depth distribution of the radionuclides is affected by some soil properties, including pH, carbonates, organic matter and particle size, and soil processes, such as leaching and adsorption. [source] Pollution of carbonate soils in a Mediterranean climate due to a tailings spillEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 2 2002M. Simón Summary The retention walls in a pond containing the residues from the pyrite mine of Aznalcóllar (southern Spain) broke open on 25 April 1998, spilling approximately 6 × 106 m3 of polluted water and toxic tailings, which affected some 55 km2. Drying and aeration of the tailings resulted in oxidation, forming an acidic solution with high pollutant contents, the effects of which were studied in a calcareous soil. The infiltration of this solution markedly affected only the first 12 mm of the soil, where strong acidification caused the weathering of the carbonates, and where the fine mineral particles were hydrolysed. The SO42, ions in the acidic solution precipitated almost entirely at this depth, forming gypsum, hydroxysulphates and complex sulphates. The Fe3+ ions also precipitated there, mainly in amorphous or poorly crystallized forms, adsorbing to As, Sb, Tl and Pb dissolved in the acidic solution. The Al3+ ions, though partly precipitating in the acidic layer, accumulated mostly where the soil pH exceeded 5.5 (12,14 mm in depth). They did so primarily as amorphous or poorly crystallized forms, adsorbing to Cu dissolved in the acidic solution. The Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions accumulated mainly at pH > 7.0 (19,21 mm in depth), being adsorbed chiefly by clay mineral. After 15 months, only the first 20 mm of the soil were acidified by the oxidation of the tailings and most of the pollutants did not penetrate deeper than 100 mm. Consequently, the speed of the cleanup of the toxic spill is not as important as a thorough removal of tailings together with the upper 10 cm of the soil. [source] UNDERSTANDING THE EVOLUTION AND STABILITY OF THE G-MATRIXEVOLUTION, Issue 10 2008Stevan J. Arnold The G -matrix summarizes the inheritance of multiple, phenotypic traits. The stability and evolution of this matrix are important issues because they affect our ability to predict how the phenotypic traits evolve by selection and drift. Despite the centrality of these issues, comparative, experimental, and analytical approaches to understanding the stability and evolution of the G -matrix have met with limited success. Nevertheless, empirical studies often find that certain structural features of the matrix are remarkably constant, suggesting that persistent selection regimes or other factors promote stability. On the theoretical side, no one has been able to derive equations that would relate stability of the G -matrix to selection regimes, population size, migration, or to the details of genetic architecture. Recent simulation studies of evolving G -matrices offer solutions to some of these problems, as well as a deeper, synthetic understanding of both the G -matrix and adaptive radiations. [source] Subsite specificity of trypanosomal cathepsin L-like cysteine proteasesFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 9 2001Probing the S2 pocket with phenylalanine-derived amino acids The S2 subsite of mammalian cysteine proteinases of the papain family is essential for specificity. Among natural amino acids, all these enzymes prefer bulky hydrophobic residues such as phenylalanine at P2. This holds true for their trypanosomal counterparts: cruzain from Trypanosoma cruzi and congopain from T. congolense. A detailed analysis of the S2 specificity of parasitic proteases was performed to gain information that might be of interest for the design of more selective pseudopeptidyl inhibitors. Nonproteogenic phenylalanyl analogs (Xaa) have been introduced into position P2 of fluorogenic substrates dansyl-Xaa-Arg-Ala-Pro-Trp, and their kinetic constants (Km, kcat/Km) have been determined with congopain and cruzain, and related host cathepsins B and L. Trypanosomal cysteine proteases are poorly stereoselective towards d/l -Phe, the inversion of chirality modifying the efficiency of the reaction but not the Km. Congopain binds cyclohexylalanine better than aromatic Phe derivatives. Another characteristic feature of congopain compared to cruzain and cathepsins B and L was that it could accomodate a phenylglycyl residue (kcat/Km = 1300 mm,1·s,1), while lengthening of the side chain by a methylene group only slightly impaired the specificity constant towards trypanosomal cysteine proteases. Mono- and di-halogenation or nitration of Phe did not affect Km for cathepsin L-like enzymes, but the presence of constrained Phe derivatives prevented a correct fitting into the S2 subsite. A model of congopain has been built to study the fit of Phe analogs within the S2 pocket. Phe analogs adopted a positioning within the S2 pocket similar to that of the Tyr of the cruzain/Z-Tyr-Ala-fluoromethylketone complex. However, cyclohexylalanine has an energetically favorable chair-like conformation and can penetrate deeper into the subsite. Fitting of modeled Phe analogs were in good agreement with kinetic parameters. Furthermore, a linear relationship could be established with logP, supporting the suggestion that fitting into the S2 pocket of trypanosomal cysteine proteases depends on the hydrophobicity of Phe analogs. [source] The Influence of Film Morphology in High-Mobility Small-Molecule:Polymer Blend Organic TransistorsADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 14 2010Jeremy Smith Abstract Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based upon blends of small molecular semiconductors and polymers show promise for high performance organic electronics applications. Here the charge transport characteristics of high mobility p-channel organic transistors based on 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene:poly(triarylamine) blend films are investigated. By simple alteration of the film processing conditions two distinct film microstructures can be obtained: one characterized by small spherulitic grains (SG) and one by large grains (LG). Charge transport measurements reveal thermally activated hole transport in both SG and LG film microstructures with two distinct temperature regimes. For temperatures >115,K, gate voltage dependent activation energies (EA) in the range of 25,60 meV are derived. At temperatures <115,K, the activation energies are smaller and typically in the range 5,30 meV. For both film microstructures hole transport appears to be dominated by trapping at the grain boundaries. Estimates of the trap densities suggests that LG films with fewer grain boundaries are characterized by a reduced number of traps that are less energetically disordered but deeper in energy than for small SG films. The effects of source and drain electrode treatment with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on current injection is also investigated. Fluorinated thiol SAMs were found to alter the work function of gold electrodes by up to ,1,eV leading to a lower contact resistance. However, charge transport analysis suggests that electrode work function is not the only parameter to consider for efficient charge injection. [source] Visualisation of standardized life-history patternsFISH AND FISHERIES, Issue 4 2001Dirk Zeller Abstract The life-history patterns of fish and invertebrate species are complex. But much of this complexity can be captured in simple diagrams of coastal transects, where juveniles usually occur in larger numbers in shallow waters, while adults generally inhabit deeper, offshore waters. Iconographic representations of generalized life-history patterns and depth profiles, with specific key life-history parameters can capture much of these standardized patterns, including spawning areas, nursery/juvenile distributions, adult distributions and spawning migrations. Several examples presented here from a wide range of habitats and ecosystems (temperate and tropical waters, demersal, deep water, pelagic and coral reefs), including an example of different stocks of the same species, illustrate some general patterns with regard to water depth and distance from shore. The present approach should be viewed as a first step towards obtaining standardized patterns about key life-history parameters, and will hopefully lead to incorporation into management of life-history interconnectivity between different fishery sectors or gears. This may contribute to sustainable, ecosystem-based approaches to management by informing policy options when faced with decisions to rationalize overcapitalized fisheries. [source] Seasonal variation in habitat use by salmon, Salmo salar, trout, Salmo trutta and grayling, Thymallus thymallus, in a chalk streamFISHERIES MANAGEMENT & ECOLOGY, Issue 4 2006W. D. RILEY Abstract, A portable multi-point decoder system deployed in a tributary of the River Itchen, a southern English chalk stream, recorded the habitats used by PIT-tagged juvenile salmon, Salmo salar L., trout, Salmo trutta L. and grayling, Thymallus thymallus L., with a high degree of spatial and temporal resolution. The fishes' use of habitat was monitored at 350 locations throughout the stream during September/October 2001 (feeding period) and January/February 2002 (over-wintering period). Salmon parr tended to occupy water 25,55 cm deep with a velocity between 0.4 and 1.0 m s,1. During both autumn and winter, first year salmon (0+ group) were associated with gravel substrate during the daytime and aquatic weed at night. In autumn, 1+ salmon were strongly associated with hard mud substrates during the day and with marginal tree roots at night. In winter, they were located on gravel substrate by day and gravel and mud at night. Trout were associated with a greater range of habitats than salmon, generally occupying deeper and faster water with increasing age. During the autumn, 0+ trout were located along shallow (5,10 cm) and slow (,0.1,0.4 m s,1) margins of the stream, amongst tree roots by day and on silty substrates at night. During winter the 0+ trout occupied silty substrates at all times. As age increased, trout increasingly used coarse substrates; hard mud, gravel and chalk, and weed at night. All age groups of grayling (0+, 1+ and 2+) tended to occupy hard gravel substrate at all times and used deeper and faster water with increasing age. The 1+ and 2+ groups were generally found in water 40,70 cm deep with a velocity between 0.3 and 0.5 ms,1, whilst the 0+ groups showed a preference for shallower water with reduced velocity at night, particularly in the winter. There were greater differences in the habitats used between species and age groups than between the autumn and winter periods, and the distribution of fish was more strongly influenced by substrate type than water depth or velocity. The results are discussed in relation to the habitat requirements of mixed salmonid populations and habitat management. [source] A numerical study of inferred rockfish (Sebastes spp.) larval dispersal along the central California coastFISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY, Issue 1 2010CHRISTINE H. PETERSEN Abstract Successful recruitment of marine fishes depends on survival during early life-history stages, which is influenced by oceanic advection due to its impact on coastal trophodynamics and transport processes. Here we evaluate the influence of ocean circulation on the dispersal of rockfish (Sebastes spp.) larvae along the central California coast using an implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System, driven at the surface by output from the Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System. Thousands of floats simulating rockfish larval propagules, constrained to follow fixed depths, were released over a broad coastal area at 2-day intervals, and transported by simulated ocean currents at depths of 1, 7, 20, 40, and 70 m. Trajectory statistics are averaged across the 4-yr period from January 2000 through December 2003 to reveal mean trajectory direction, net displacement, fractional cross-shore loss, and duration of retention for different seasons. On average, near-surface propagules originating nearshore are transported offshore during the upwelling season, whereas deeper propagules move alongshore to the north. This vertical shear vanishes during winter, with most floats moving alongshore to the north, regardless of depth. After 35 days in the water column, typical transport distances were ,50 km for floats remaining nearshore and ,150 km for floats over the midshelf and slope. Implications for performance of marine reserves for rockfish conservation are discussed. Our results also provide evidence for a strong semiannual pattern of coastal retention rates, with high export of near-surface drifters during the upwelling season. In contrast, high rates of shelf retention occurred for releases at 20 m and deeper during summer, and at all depths during winter. HURST Abstract The role of behavior, especially vertical migration, is recognized as a critical component of realistic models of larval fish dispersion. Unfortunately, our understanding of these behaviors lags well behind our ability to construct three-dimensional flow-field models. Previous field studies of vertical behavior of larval Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) were limited to small, preflexion stages (,11 mm SL) in a narrow range of thermal conditions. To develop a more complete picture of larval behavior, we examined the effects of ontogeny, temperature, and light on vertical responses of larval Pacific cod in experimental columns. While eggs were strictly demersal, yolk-sac larvae displayed a strong surface orientation as early as 1 day post hatch (, 5 mm SL). Consistent with field observations, small preflexion larvae (<10 mm SL) showed no response to varying light levels. However, there was a direct effect of temperature on larval behavior: Pacific cod larvae exhibited a stronger surface orientation at 4°C than at 8°C. The behavior of larger, postflexion larvae (>15 mm SL) in experimental columns was consistent with a diel vertical migration and independent of water temperature: fish were more widely distributed in the column, and median positions were consistently deeper at higher light levels. These laboratory observations are combined with observations from discrete-depth (MOCNESS) sampling in the Gulf of Alaska to characterize the vertical distribution of larval Pacific cod and contrast ontogenetic patterns with walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma). The vertical movements of larval Pacific cod described here will be applied in the development of dispersal projections from Gulf of Alaska spawning grounds. [source] Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) vertical movements in the Azores Islands determined with pop-up satellite archival tagsFISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY, Issue 2 2008H. ARRIZABALAGA Abstract Movement patterns of 17 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) near the Azores Islands were analyzed between April and May 2001 and 2002 using pop-up satellite archival tags. Despite short attachment durations (1 to 21 days, 8.2 days on average), their vertical movements revealed much shallower distribution of bigeye tuna in comparison with previous studies in the tropical Pacific and tropical Atlantic. Depth and temperature histograms were unimodal, although overall depth distribution during the day was deeper than during the night due to daily incursions in deeper waters. Although generalized additive models showed significant non-linear relationships with weight of the fish and sea level anomaly (as a proxy for variability of thermocline depth), the effect of these variables on bigeye depth appeared minor, suggesting that vertical movements of bigeye in the Azores during the spring migration may be influenced by food availability in upper water layers. [source] Hypoxia-based habitat compression of tropical pelagic fishesFISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY, Issue 6 2006ERIC D. PRINCE Abstract Large areas of cold hypoxic water occur as distinct strata in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) and Atlantic oceans as a result of high productivity initiated by intense nutrient upwelling. We show that this stratum restricts the depth distribution of tropical pelagic marlins, sailfish, and tunas by compressing the acceptable physical habitat into a narrow surface layer. This layer extends downward to a variable boundary defined by a shallow thermocline, often at 25 m, above a barrier of cold hypoxic water. The depth distributions of marlin and sailfish monitored with electronic tags and average dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature profiles show that this cold hypoxic environment constitutes a lower habitat boundary in the ETP, but not in the western North Atlantic (WNA), where DO is not limiting. Eastern Pacific and eastern Atlantic sailfish are larger than those in WNA, where the hypoxic zone is much deeper or absent. Larger sizes may reflect enhanced foraging opportunities afforded by the closer proximity of predator and prey in compressed habitat, as well as by the higher productivity. The shallow band of acceptable habitat restricts these fishes to a very narrow surface layer and makes them more vulnerable to over-exploitation by surface gears. Predictably, the long-term landings of tropical pelagic tunas from areas of habitat compression have been far greater than in surrounding areas. Many tropical pelagic species in the Atlantic Ocean are currently either fully exploited or overfished and their future status could be quite sensitive to increased fishing pressures, particularly in areas of habitat compression.
