Selected AbstractsTowards the automatic analysis of 1H NMR spectra: Part 4,Additional requirements of flow-NMRMAGNETIC RESONANCE IN CHEMISTRY, Issue 12 2004Lee Griffiths Abstract Flow-NMR allows more rapid and convenient acquisition of NMR spectra. Its main application area has therefore been in multiple parallel synthesis or combinatorial chemistry. At the same time, there is a significant need to automate the analysis of the resultant spectra. However, flow-NMR brings spectral imperfections, which compromise attempts to automate this analysis. This study proposes experimental and computational expedients to accommodate the effects of residual solvent peaks, 13C satellites, finite signal-to-noise ratio, impurities, presaturation on integral calculations, the ,silent' region and how multiplet areas can be scaled to numbers of protons in this environment. [source] Approximation methods for reliability-based design optimization problemsGAMM - MITTEILUNGEN, Issue 2 2007Irfan Kaymaz Abstract Deterministic optimum designs are obtained without considering of uncertainties related to the problem parameters such as material parameters (yield stress, allowable stresses, moment capacities, etc.), external loadings, manufacturing errors, tolerances, cost functions, which could lead to unreliable designs, therefore several methods have been developed to treat uncertainties in engineering analysis and, more recently, to carry out design optimization with the additional requirement of reliability, which referred to as reliability-based design optimization. In this paper, two most common approaches for reliability-based design optimization are reviewed, one of which is reliability-index based approach and the other performancemeasure approach. Although both approaches can be used to evaluate the probabilistic constraint, their use can be prohibitive when the associated function evaluation required by the probabilistic constraint is expensive, especially for real engineering problems. Therefore, an adaptive response surface method is proposed by which the probabilistic constraint is replaced with a simple polynomial function, thus the computational time can be reduced significantly as presented in the example given in this paper. We show that under an additional requirement on the given distances this can be transformed to a combinatorial problem. Juhnke Summary Both the genomes of the epsilonproteobacteria Wolinella succinogenes and Campylobacter jejuni contain operons (sdhABE) that encode for so far uncharacterized enzyme complexes annotated as ,non-classical' succinate:quinone reductases (SQRs). However, the role of such an enzyme ostensibly involved in aerobic respiration in an anaerobic organism such as W. succinogenes has hitherto been unknown. We have established the first genetic system for the manipulation and production of a member of the non-classical succinate:quinone oxidoreductase family. Biochemical characterization of the W. succinogenes enzyme reveals that the putative SQR is in fact a novel methylmenaquinol:fumarate reductase (MFR) with no detectable succinate oxidation activity, clearly indicative of its involvement in anaerobic metabolism. We demonstrate that the hydrophilic subunits of the MFR complex are, in contrast to all other previously characterized members of the superfamily, exported into the periplasm via the twin-arginine translocation (tat)-pathway. Furthermore we show that a single amino acid exchange (Ala86,His) in the flavoprotein of that enzyme complex is the only additional requirement for the covalent binding of the otherwise non-covalently bound FAD. Our results provide an explanation for the previously published puzzling observation that the C. jejuni sdhABE operon is upregulated in an oxygen-limited environment as compared with microaerophilic laboratory conditions. [source] Different Gene Expressions on the Left and the Right: A Genotype/Phenotype Mismatch in Need of AttentionANNALS OF HUMAN GENETICS, Issue 1 2008Ursula Mittwoch Summary Discordance in monozygotic twins has traditionally been explained in terms of environmental influences. A recent investigation has found a difference in epigenetic markers in older but not in younger twins. However, phenotypic differences that depend on an individual's postnatal life style do not address the problem of discordance in congenital malformations, or the reason why malformations are frequently unilateral, often with a preference for one or the other side. One such condition, cleft lip with or without cleft palate, which is preferentially expressed on the left, is a multifactorial condition, that is caused by a failure of the critical timing necessary for different groups of cells to meet and develop into a normal face. This process is dependent on cell proliferation and migration, which are energy-dependent, while the additional requirement for apoptosis to allow cell fusion suggests the involvement of mitochondria. Recent progress in two separate areas of research could lead to a better understanding of the problem of facial clefts: (1) the recognition of an interaction between gene products and mitochondria in the aetiology of neurodegenerative diseases and (2) the discovery of an increasing number of genes, including transcription factors, growth factors and members of the TGF-, signalling family, that are differentially expressed on the left and right side, thus pointing to a difference in their micro-environment. These findings emphasize the importance of investigating the activity of candidate genes for complex developmental processes separately on the left and right sides. Data presented in this review suggest that differential growth rates may lead to an inversion of laterality. A method is described to test for a possible mitochondrial difference between left and right sides, using a mouse model with cleft lip. [source] Stochastic efficiency analysis with risk aversion bounds: a correctionAUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURAL & RESOURCE ECONOMICS, Issue 4 2009Jack Meyer A recent paper by Hardaker et al. (The Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, 48, 2004a, 253) and book by Hardaker et al. (Coping with Risk in Agriculture, 2004b) describe a procedure for determining an efficient set from among a set of random alternatives. This procedure, called stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF), is claimed to make the same assumption concerning the risk aversion measures as does stochastic dominance with respect to a function (SDRF). This is claim is incorrect. SERF imposes an additional requirement on the risk aversion measures of the decision makers. Both procedures assume a lower and an upper bound on risk aversion, but SERF also assumes that all risk aversion measures are of the same functional form as these lower and upper bound functions. This additional strong requirement on risk preferences implies that the efficient set identified under SERF is usually smaller than that identified using SDRF. [source] Beyond Reaping the First Harvest: Management Objectives for Timber Production in the Brazilian AmazonCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 4 2007DANIEL J. ZARIN manejo de bosques; producción sostenida; sustentabilidad; tala de impacto reducido Abstract:,Millions of hectares of future timber concessions are slated to be implemented within large public forests under the forest law passed in 2006 by the Brazilian Congress. Additional millions of hectares of large, privately owned forests and smaller areas of community forests are certified as well managed by the Forest Stewardship Council, based on certification standards that will be reviewed in 2007. Forest size and ownership are two key factors that influence management objectives and the capacity of forest managers to achieve them. Current best ecological practices for timber production from Brazil's native Amazon forests are limited to reduced-impact logging (RIL) systems that minimize the environmental impacts of harvest operations and that obey legal restrictions regarding minimum diameters, rare species, retention of seed trees, maximum logging intensity, preservation of riparian buffers, fire protection, and wildlife conservation. Compared with conventional, predatory harvesting that constitutes >90% of the region's timber production, RIL dramatically reduces logging damage and helps maintain forest cover and the presence of rare tree species, but current RIL guidelines do not assure that the volume of timber removed can be sustained in future harvests. We believe it is counterproductive to expect smallholders to subscribe to additional harvest limitations beyond RIL, that larger private forested landholdings managed for timber production should be sustainable with respect to the total volume of timber harvested per unit area per cutting cycle, and that large public forests should sustain volume production of individual harvested species. These additional requirements would improve the ecological sustainability of forest management and help create a stable forest-based sector of the region's economy, but would involve costs associated with lengthened cutting cycles, reduced harvest intensities, and/or postharvest silviculture to promote adequate growth and regeneration. Resumen:,Bajo la nueva ley forestal aprobada en 2006 por el Congreso Brasileño, millones de hectáreas de bosques públicos están destinadas a constituir futuras concesiones madereras. Millones de hectáreas adicionales de extensos bosques privados y áreas reducidas de bosques comunitarios están certificadas por el Forest Stewardship Council por su buen manejo, con base en estándares de certificación que serán revisados en 2007. La extensión y tenencia del bosque son dos factores clave que influyen en los objetivos de manejo y en la capacidad de los manejadores para alcanzarlos. Las mejores prácticas ecológicas actuales para la producción de madera en los bosques de la Amazonía Brasileña están limitadas a sistemas de tala de impacto reducido (TIR) que minimizan los impactos ambientales de las operaciones de cosecha y que obedecen restricciones legales en relación con los diámetros mínimos, las especies raras, la retención de árboles semilla, la máxima intensidad de tala, la preservación de amortiguamientos ribereños, la protección del fuego y la conservación de vida silvestre. En comparación con la cosecha convencional, depredadora, mediante la cual se obtiene >90% de la producción de madera en la región, la TIR dramáticamente reduce el daño y ayuda a mantener la cobertura del bosque y la presencia de especies de árboles raras, pero los actuales lineamientos de TIR no aseguran que el volumen de madera removida pueda ser sostenido en futuras cosechas. [source] Informed Consent and Ethical Issues in Military Medical ResearchACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 11 2005John McManus MD Abstract Informed consent in military research shares many of the same fundamental principles and regulations that govern civilian biomedical research. In fact, much of modern research ethics is grounded in events that occurred in the context of war or government-sponsored research. Despite these similarities and common origins, research in the military has additional requirements designed to preserve service members' informed consent rights. The special nature of the superior,subordinate relationship in the military necessitates careful protections to avoid perceptions of coercion or undue influence on a military subject. Additionally, current legal and regulatory requirements for advanced informed consent significantly restrict the flexibility of the military to conduct research using waiver of consent. This has implications on the ability of the nation to develop effective medical treatments for the global war on terrorism. Nevertheless, work is under way to realign defense research policy with the norms of civilian biomedical practice. Future directions include the adoption of waivers for military emergency research, and the cautious introduction of human subject studies on the battlefield. This paper discusses historical background, regulatory differences, and concerns and challenges of some of these regulatory differences for research personnel that apply to informed consent and waiver of said informed consent for emergency research conducted by the U.S. military. [source] Anonymous Living Liver Donation: Donor Profiles and OutcomesAMERICAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 9 2010T. W. Reichman There are no published series of the assessment process, profiles and outcomes of anonymous, directed or nondirected live liver donation. The outcomes of 29 consecutive potential anonymous liver donors at our center were assessed. We used our standard live liver assessment process, augmented with the following additional acceptance criteria: a logical rationale for donation, a history of social altruism, strong social supports and a willingness to maintain confidentiality of patient information. Seventeen potential donors were rejected and 12 donors were ultimately accepted (six male, six female). All donors were strongly motivated by a desire and sense of responsibility to help others. Four donations were directed toward recipients who undertook media appeals. The donor operations included five left lateral segmentectomies and seven right hepatectomies. The overall donor morbidity was 40% with one patient having a transient Clavien level 3 complication (a pneumothorax). All donors are currently well. None expressed regret about their decision to donate, and all volunteered the opinion that donation had improved their lives. The standard live liver donor assessment process plus our additional requirements appears to provide a robust assessment process for the selection of anonymous live liver donors. Acceptance of anonymous donors enlarges the donor liver pool. [source] Clinical assessment and management of the oral environment in the oncology patientAUSTRALIAN DENTAL JOURNAL, Issue 2010LJ Walsh Abstract The dental care of oncology patients is an important component of general dental practice. Oncology patients have additional requirements for their outpatient care in the dental office. Intense involvement of the general dental practitioner in the patient's overall plan of care is essential so that appropriate preventive and therapeutic strategies are followed prior to chemotherapy, radiation and other medical treatments. This paper provides an overview of the role of the dental practitioner in the pre-treatment workup and post-treatment maintenance of oncology patients, and discusses the complications which occur during the intensive and in-hospital phases of care, in the context of approaches that show promise for reducing or preventing these. The role of the general dental practitioner in the maintenance of oral health for the remainder of the patient's life is stressed, with evidence-based recommendations given for optimal use of home care products which support oral health and improve quality-of-life.
