Daily pattern of some fatty acids in the athletic horse

Summary In the sport field, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) are important for the physical performance during the aerobic exercise of short intensity and long duration. In man, rat, goat and in the sedentary horse studies on the chronometabolism showed the presence of a circadian rhythm of the plasmatic concentration of NEFA while data for the athletic horse are lacking. To define a chronogram helpful for a specific planning and the differentiation of the training programmme in the athletic horse, the circadian pattern of some fatty acids (NEFA, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids) was studied in five Sella Italiana horses. These horses trained following a daily model of activity consisting of walk, trot, gallop and jump of obstacles of different heights. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein every 4 h, starting at 08:00 hours, for 2 days to assess the concentrations of total NEFA (by spectrophotometry), palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids (by gas chromatography). anova for repeated measures showed a statistical significant effect of the time of the day in NEFA, oleic and linolenic acids. The application of the periodic model showed the periodic pattern of NEFA, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. Acrophases were in the afternoon for all parameters. The results obtained showed a different trend of the circadian pattern of the studied parameters in the athletic horse than in the sedentary one because the physical activity and the post-prandial metabolism acted as zeitgebers. Daily patterns of body mass gain in four species of small wintering birds

Theoretically, the trajectories describing the daily accumulation of body reserves are expected to differ between bird species in relation to whether or not they hoard food. To carry reserves on the body may be costly and hoarding species can be expected to hoard food early in the day when light and retrieve it in the afternoon, with a concomitant rapid increase in body mass. Also, the increased food predictability resulting from being able to consume hoarded food late in the day should lead to a relatively faster gain in body reserves in the afternoon in hoarding species compared to non-hoarders. Non-hoarders may have to hedge against possible afternoon losses of foraging opportunities by accumulating more reserves early in the day. In this study the daily patterns of body mass gain in four small bird species resident during winter in Scandinavia are described. Individually known birds were trained to come to a permanent feeder and their body masses were recorded every hour throughout the day with a remote-controlled balance. The hoarding willow tit Parus montanus, marsh tit P. palustris and European nuthatch Sitta europaea all displayed the most rapid gain in body mass in the early hours of the day. After the initial burst in the morning, reserves were accumulated at a roughly constant rate for the remainder of the day. In contrast, the non-hoarding great tit P. major apparently gained body reserves at a more even rate. The daily pattern of body mass gain found in the hoarding species differs from prevailing theoretical predictions, whereas the pattern in the non-hoarding great tit is in a better agreement with theory, from which this pattern has been predicted repeatedly. Daily patterns of locomotor and sugar-feeding activity of the mosquito Culex annulirostris from geographically isolated populations

Abstract., The daily patterns of locomotor and sugar-feeding activity of virgin female Culex annulirostris from three regions in Australia and a laboratory colony are studied using video techniques in the laboratory. Although all populations display a crepuscular/nocturnal locomotor pattern, significant variation exists between populations, with the pattern of those from southern Australia differing markedly from those in central and northern Australia. It is hypothesized that adaptation of populations to local climates is responsible. Sugar-feeding (inferred from landing on a sugar source) is mostly crepuscular/nocturnal in all populations. The behavioural variation that exists within wide-ranging mosquito species is highlighted, and indicates that significant behavioural differences exist between laboratory colonies and wild-types. Interaction between wind-induced seiches and convective cooling governs algal distribution in a canyon-shaped reservoir

Summary 1. Wind is considered the dominant factor controlling phytoplankton distribution in lentic environments. In canyon-shaped reservoirs, wind tends to blow along the main axis generating internal seiches and advective water movements that jointly with biological features of algae can produce a heterogeneous phytoplankton distribution. Turbulence generated by wind stress and convection will also affect the vertical distribution of algae, depending on their sinking properties. 2. We investigated the vertical and horizontal distribution of phytoplankton during the stratification period in Sau Reservoir (NE Spain). Sites along the main reservoir axis were sampled every 4 h for 3 days, and profiles of chlorophyll- a and temperature were made using a fluorescent FluoroProbe, which can discriminate among the main algal groups. Convective and wind shear velocity scales, and energy dissipation were calculated from meteorological data, and simulation experiments were performed to describe non-measured processes, like vertical advection and sinking velocity of phytoplankton. 3. Wind direction changed from day to night, producing a diel thermocline oscillation and an internal seiche. Energy dissipation was moderate during the night, and mainly attributed to convective cooling. During the day the energy dissipation was entirely attributed to wind shear, but values indicated low turbulence intensity. 4. The epilimnetic algal community was mainly composed of diatoms and chlorophytes. Chlorophytes showed a homogeneous distribution on the horizontal and vertical planes. Diatom horizontal pattern was also homogeneous, because the horizontal advective velocities generated by wind forcing were not high enough to develop phytoplankton gradients along the reservoir. 5. Diatom vertical distribution was heterogeneous in space and time. Different processes dominated in different regions of the reservoir, due to the interaction between seiching and the daily cycle of convective-mediated turbulence. As the meteorological forcing followed a clear daily pattern, we found very different diatom sedimentation dynamics between day and night. Remarkably, these dynamics were asynchronous in the extremes of the seiche, implying that under the same meteorological forcing a diatom population can show contrasting sedimentation dynamics at small spatial scales (approximately 103 m). This finding should be taken into account when interpreting paleolimnological records from different locations in a lake. 6. Vertical distribution of non-motile algae is a complex process including turbulence, vertical and horizontal advection, variations in the depth of the mixing layer and the intrinsic sinking properties of the organisms. Thus, simplistic interpretations considering only one of these factors should be regarded with caution. The results of this work also suggest that diatoms can persist in stratified water because of a synergistic effect between seiching and convective turbulence. [source]


Transformation Into Daily Migraine With Aura Following Transcutaneous Atrial Septal Defect Closure

A link between migraine with aura and cardiac right-to-left shunting has been previously reported. Abortion or decreased frequency of migraine with aura attacks after atrial septal defect closure has been reported in the literature. We report the first case of transformation of migraine with aura into a daily pattern after atrial septal defect closure. A 48-year-old male who had been suffering from rather infrequent attacks of migraine with sensory and visual aura underwent transcutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect. His migraine attacks changed into a daily pattern the day following the procedure and remained so for 6 months. This change in pattern may be related to a changed intra-atrial pressure after the closure or some other unknown factor. [source]


A comparison of cyclic variations in anterior knee laxity, genu recurvatum, and general joint laxity across the menstrual cycle

Abstract Changes in anterior knee laxity (AKL), genu recurvatum (GR) and general joint laxity (GJL) were quantified across days of the early follicular and early luteal phases of the menstrual cycle in 66 females, and the similarity in their pattern of cyclic variations examined. Laxity was measured on each of the first 6 days of menses (M1,M6) and the first 8 days following ovulation (L1,L8) over two cycles. The largest mean differences were observed between L5 and L8 for AKL (0.32,mm), and between L5 and M1 for GR (0.56°) and GJL (0.26) (p,<,0.013). At the individual level, mean absolute cyclic changes in AKL (1.8,±,0.7,mm, 1.6,±,0.7,mm), GR (2.8,±,1.0°, 2.4,±,1.0°), and GJL (1.1,±,1.1, 0.7,±,1.0) were more apparent, with minimum, maximum and delta values being quite consistent from month to month (ICC2,3,=,0.51,0.98). Although the average daily pattern of change in laxity was quite similar between variables (Spearman correlation range 0.61 and 0.90), correlations between laxity measures at the individual level were much lower (range ,0.07 to 0.43). Substantial, similar, and reproducible cyclic changes in AKL, GR, and GJL were observed across the menstrual cycle, with the magnitude and pattern of cyclic changes varying considerably among females. © 2010 Orthopaedic Research Society. Chronic Ethanol Disrupts Circadian Photic Entrainment and Daily Locomotor Activity in the Mouse

Background:, Chronic ethanol abuse is associated with disrupted circadian rhythms and sleep. Ethanol administration impairs circadian clock phase-resetting, suggesting a mode for the disruptive effect of alcohol abuse on circadian timing. Here, we extend previous studies to explore the effects of chronic forced ethanol on photic phase-resetting, photic entrainment, and daily locomotor activity patterns in C57BL/6J mice. Methods:, First, microdialysis was used to characterize the circadian patterns of ethanol uptake in the suprachiasmatic (SCN) circadian clock and correlate this with systemic ethanol levels and episodic drinking of 10 or 15% ethanol. Second, the effects of chronic forced ethanol drinking and withdrawal on photic phase-delays of the circadian activity rhythm were assessed. Third, the effects of chronic ethanol drinking on entrainment to a weak photic zeitgeber (1 minute of 25 lux intensity light per day) were assessed. This method was used to minimize any masking actions of light that could mask ethanol effects on clock entrainment. Results:, Peak ethanol levels in the SCN and periphery occurred during the dark phase and coincided with the time when light normally induces phase-delays in mice. These delays were dose-dependently inhibited by chronic ethanol and its withdrawal. Chronic ethanol did not impede re-entrainment to a shifted light cycle but affected entrainment under the weak photic zeitgeber and disrupted the daily pattern of locomotor activity. Conclusions:, These results confirm that chronic ethanol consumption and withdrawal markedly impair circadian clock photic phase-resetting. Ethanol also disturbs the temporal structure of nighttime locomotor activity and photic entrainment. Collectively, these results suggest a direct action of ethanol on the SCN clock. [source]


Daily dynamics of photosynthesis of the freshwater red alga Sirodotia delicatula (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta)

SUMMARY The daily course of photosynthetic parameters of a population of the freshwater red alga Sirodotia delicatula from São Paulo State, Brazil (20°43,24,S, 49°18,21,W) was investigated under natural and laboratory conditions using dissolved oxygen and in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence techniques. Field specimens in laboratory conditions showed a defined daily pattern for net photosynthesis (NP) with two peaks observed in marine macroalgae and some freshwater red algae: the first (the highest) during the morning, and the second (the lowest and less evident) during the afternoon. Values of electron transport rate did not show a clear pattern of daily variation. NP results suggest the existence of an endogenous rhythm controlling photosynthesis. The study under natural conditions in two contrasting periods (autumn (June) and spring (October)) showed that the daily course of effective and potential quantum yield values was negatively correlated with irradiance and values were similar in the beginning and end of the day. These data evidenced, respectively, high excitement pressure on photosystem II and good recovery capacity (with lower values in spring) and a lack of irreversible photodamage to photosynthetic apparatus due to the prolonged exposure to high irradiances. Non-photochemical quenching values were also negatively correlated with the irradiance, suggesting a low dissipation capacity of excess energy absorbed by reaction centers. The results evidenced a typical pattern of daily variation with evident response to irradiance. [source]

The Dynamics of Institutional and Individual Trading

We study the daily and intradaily cross-sectional relation between stock returns and the trading of institutional and individual investors in Nasdaq 100 securities. Based on the previous day's stock return, the top performing decile of securities is 23.9% more likely to be bought in net by institutions (and sold by individuals) than those in the bottom performance decile. Strong contemporaneous daily patterns can largely be explained by net institutional (individual) trading positively (negatively) following past intradaily excess stock returns (or the news associated therein). In comparison, evidence of return predictability and price pressure are economically small. [source]


Social influences on mammalian circadian rhythms: animal and human studies

ABSTRACT While light is considered the dominant stimulus for entraining (synchronizing) mammalian circadian rhythms to local environmental time, social stimuli are also widely cited as,zeitgebers'(time-cues). This review critically assesses the evidence for social influences on mammalian circadian rhythms, and possible mechanisms of action. Social stimuli may affect circadian behavioural programmes by regulating the phase and period of circadian clocks (i.e. a zeitgeber action, either direct or by conditioning to photic zeitgebers), by influencing daily patterns of light exposure or modulating light input to the clock, or by associative learning processes that utilize circadian time as a discriminative or conditioned stimulus. There is good evidence that social stimuli can act as zeitgebers. In several species maternal signals are the primary zeitgeber in utero and prior to weaning. Adults of some species can also be phase shifted or entrained by single or periodic social interactions, but these effects are often weak, and appear to be mediated by social stimulation of arousal. There is no strong evidence yet for sensory-specific nonphotic inputs to the clock. The circadian phase-dependence of clock resetting to social stimuli or arousal (the,nonphotic'phase response curve, PRC), where known, is distinct from that to light and similar in diurnal and nocturnal animals. There is some evidence that induction of arousal can modulate light input to the clock, but no studies yet of whether social stimuli can shift the clock by conditioning to photic cues, or be incorporated into the circadian programme by associative learning. In humans, social zeitgebers appear weak by comparison with light. In temporal isolation or under weak light-dark cycles, humans may ignore social cues and free-run independently, although cases of mutual synchrony among two or more group-housed individuals have been reported. Social cues may affect circadian timing by controlling sleep-wake states, but the phase of entrainment observed to fixed sleep-wake schedules in dim light is consistent with photic mediation (scheduled variations in behavioural state necessarily create daily light-dark cycles unless subjects are housed in constant dark or have no eyes). By contrast, discrete exercise sessions can induce phase shifts consistent with the nonphotic PRC observed in animal studies. The best evidence for social entrainment in humans is from a few totally blind subjects who synchronize to the 24 h day, or to near-24 h sleep-wake schedules under laboratory conditions. However, the critical entraining stimuli have not yet been identified, and there are no reported cases yet of social entrainment in bilaterally enucleated blind subjects. The role of social zeitgebers in mammalian behavioural ecology, their mechanisms of action, and their utility for manipulating circadian rhythms in humans, remains to be more fully elaborated. Advanced Statistics: Developing a Formal Model of Emergency Department Census and Defining Operational Efficiency

Background: Emergency department (ED) crowding has been a frequent topic of investigation, but it is a concept without an objective definition. This has limited the scope of research and progress toward the development of consistent and meaningful operational responses. Objectives: To develop a straightforward model of ED census that incorporates concepts of ED crowding, daily patient surge, throughput time, and operational efficiency. Methods: Using 2005,2006 patient encounter data at a Level 1 urban trauma center, a set of three stylized facts describing daily patterns of ED census was observed. These facts guided the development of a formal, mathematical model of ED census. Using this model, a metric of ED operational efficiency and a forecast of ED census were developed. Results: The three stylized facts of daily ED census were 1) ED census is cyclical, 2) ED census exhibits an input-output relationship, and 3) unexpected shocks have long-lasting effects. These were represented by a three-equation system. This system was solved for the following expression, Censust = A(·) + B(·) cos(vT +,) + a(et), that captured the time path of ED census. Using nonlinear estimation, the parameters of this expression were estimated and a forecasting tool was developed. Conclusions: The basic pattern of ED census can be represented by a straightforward expression. This expression can be quickly adapted to a variety of inquiries regarding ED crowding, daily surge, and operational efficiency. [source]
