Selected AbstractsLong-term effects of prescribed early fire, grazing and selective tree cutting on seedling populations in the Sudanian savanna of Burkina FasoAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 1 2009Didier Zida Abstract Annual early fire, selective tree cutting and exclusion of grazing are currently used as management tools in the Sudanian savanna of Burkina Faso although their long-term effects on seedling recruitment are poorly documented. A factorial experiment involving fire, grazing and cutting, each with two levels, was established in 1992 to study the effects of these management regimes and their interactions on the regeneration of woody species, and examine whether their effects varied temporally. Species richness, density and the morphology of seedlings were assessed in 1997 and 2002, and their relative changes were determined. The change in species richness of multi-stemmed individuals was significantly higher (P = 0.018) on plots that received fire × cutting treatment than the control plots. Significantly more species with single-stem were found on unburnt than on burnt plots (P < 0.001). Grazing tended to reduce the change in total density while fire (P < 0.001) and grazing (P = 0.029) significantly reduced the change in density of single-stemmed individuals. Selective cutting did not affect the total seedling density, but tended to reduce the change in single-stemmed seedling density. Principal component analysis revealed species-specific responses to treatments, particularly the relatively high abundance of lianas compared with other species. Résumé Les feux annuels précoces, la coupe sélective d'arbres et l'exclusion du pâturage sont des moyens actuellement utilisés dans la gestion de la savane soudanienne du Burkina Faso, mais leurs effets à long terme sur le recrutement de jeunes plants sont encore mal documentés. Une expérience factorielle impliquant le feu, le pâturage et la coupe, chacun à deux niveaux, a été mis en place en 1992 pour étudier les effets de ces régimes de gestion et leurs interactions sur la régénération d'espèces ligneuses et pour voir si ces effets variaient de façon temporelle. La richesse spécifique, la densité et la morphologie des jeunes plants furent évaluées en 1997 et en 2002, et l'on a leurs changements relatifs déterminés. Le changement de la richesse spécifique des individus multicoles était significativement plus important (P = 0.018) dans les parcelles qui avaient subi le traitement feu × coupe que dans les parcelles témoins. On a trouvé significativement plus d'espèces à tige unique dans les parcelles non brûlées que dans les parcelles brûlées (P < 0.001). Le pâturage avait tendance à réduire le changement de densité totale alors que le feu (P < 0.001) et le pâturage (P = 0.029) réduisaient significativement le changement de densité des individus à tige unique. La coupe sélective n'affectait pas la densité totale des jeunes plants mais avait tendance à réduire le changement de la densité des plants à tige unique. L'analyse en composantes principales a révélé que les réponses aux différents traitements étaient spécifiques aux espèces, particulièrement l'abondance de lianes, relativement grande par rapport aux autres espèces. [source] EFFECT OF COMBINED UNDERWATER PROCESSING AND MILD PRECUT HEAT TREATMENT ON THE SENSORY QUALITY AND STORAGE OF FRESH-CUT CANTALOUPE MELONJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 4 2010KAREN L. BETT-GARBER ABSTRACT Improvement of storage quality of fresh-cut cantaloupe using a combination precut heat treatment and a modified underwater cutting treatment was determined. Eating quality was evaluated using descriptive sensory analysis, and fruit integrity was measured with respiration, cell leakage and product weight loss. Treatments included (1) control (no treatment); (2) making the first longitudinal cut underwater; (3) mild precut heat treatment in a water bath at 60C for 60 min; and (4) combination of precut heat treatment and the underwater cutting methods. Precut heating and processing underwater resulted in more intense fruity/melon flavor compared to conventional processed fresh-cut fruit. Reduced electrolyte leakage and enhanced membrane integrity were observed in all three experimental treatments, as evidenced by lower conductivity measurements. The underwater cut and combined treatments significantly reduced respiration during fresh-cut storage, reflecting less physical stress and membrane damage. Weight loss was not significantly affected by any treatment during fresh-cut storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS There is a steady increase in the consumption of fresh-cut produce. To enhance the storage quality of fresh-cut cantaloupe melon, two minimal processing techniques were examined separately and combined. The methods are mild heat treatment of the whole melon at 60C for 60 min then cooling to 4C for 24 h, cutting the cantaloupe in half and removing the seeds while submerged in a calcium chloride and water solution, and the combination of the two treatments. These methods are simple and can be utilized by small or large processors to maintain sensory quality and fruit integrity during storage. Shibata To understand how S. japonicus is affected by host nutrition and resin flow, newly hatched larvae were introduced into stressed cedar trees. Stress was induced by either heavy pruning, stem cutting (i.e. removing the side branches and top of tree), or girdling. Larval mortality due to resin flow in the ,heavy pruning treatment' and the ,stem cutting treatment' tended to be lower than that in the untreated control cedar trees where all larvae were drowned by resin flow. Parasitism to the larval stage was observed in the stem-cutting trees, not in living trees, suggesting that S. japonicus may avoid parasitism in living cedar trees because few volatiles are produced. In the ,stem-girdling treatment', although more than 90% of the introduced larvae died due to poor nutrition below the girdle, 7.8% of the larvae above the girdle reached the adult stage. The live body weight of the adults collected from above the girdle was similar to those taken from naturally infested cedar trees. These results suggest that S. japonicus requires adequate host nutrition but that larvae are defenceless against high resin flow. Thus, S. japonicus seems to be in a transition state between being primary or secondary with respect to its attack behavior on living cedar trees. [source] Influence of cutting regime and fertilizer application on the botanical composition, yield and nutritive value of herbage of wet grasslands in Central EuropeGRASS & FORAGE SCIENCE, Issue 4 2009Abstract The changes in dry matter (DM) yield, botanical composition and nutritive value of herbage to ruminants of two wet grasslands, Arrhenatherum elatius grassland (Experiment 1) and a Molinia caerulea fen meadow (Experiment 2), in which a range of cutting and fertilizer treatments were imposed in 1999, were assessed after 4,7 years of treatment imposition. Both experiments had a split-plot design with four replicates. In Experiment 1 the three main-plot cutting treatments were two cuts with a delayed first cut, three cuts and four cuts during the growing season of each year. In Experiment 2 the cutting treatments were two cuts with a traditional harvest time, two cuts with a delayed first cut and three cuts. The four sub-plot fertilizer treatments were an unfertilized control, application of a phosphorus and potassium (PK) fertilizer, application of a nitrogen (N) and PK fertilizer to the first cut only (N1PK) and application of PK plus N applied to each of two, three or four cuts (NcPK). Application of fertilizer influenced yield and botanical composition of herbage more than the cutting treatments while the opposite occurred for nutritive value of the herbage. Application of fertilizer increased the proportion of tall grasses in Experiment 1 and forbs in Experiment 2. The proportion of Equisetum palustre, present only in Experiment 1, was reduced from 0·33 to less than 0·01 by increased cutting frequency together with the NPK fertilizer treatments. In Experiment 1 diversity of vascular plants was negatively affected only by the four-cuts treatment while on both wet grasslands other cutting and fertilizer application treatments had no effect. Changes in DM yield of herbage caused by the cutting and fertilizer application treatments were similar for both vegetation types with DM yield increased significantly by fertilizer application but only slightly or not reduced by increasing the cutting frequency. Nutritive value of herbage was positively correlated with cutting frequency and was most influenced at the first cut. [source] The influence of sward canopy structure on foraging decisions by grazing cattle.GRASS & FORAGE SCIENCE, Issue 2 2003Abstract Patch selection by grazing dairy cows in response to simultaneous variation in combinations of sward structural characteristics was examined in three experiments in which four mature dairy cows were offered a choice of patches (typically 0.9 m × 0.9 m) of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) presented in a linear arrangement. Treatments involved combinations of variations in sward height, stubble height and/or depth of regrowth, prepared by preliminary cutting treatments. They were arranged in balanced sets of four to nine treatments, which were arranged in linear sequences of eighteen to twenty-seven patches. Within experiments, sequences were balanced across replicate sets of patches, which were grazed separately by individual cows. The number of bites removed and the residence time for each patch were highly correlated in all three experiments, and the results are reported using number of bites per patch as an estimator of foraging behaviour. In the first experiment, with vegetative swards, cows preferentially selected the tallest swards. When swards comprising reproductive stem were offered in Experiment 2, cows selectively grazed short-stubble swards rather than tall-stubble swards, although both offered a similar depth of regrowth. Cows did not exhibit preference for swards comprising the greatest quantity of leaf mass, indicating that the spatial distribution of plant components assumed greater importance. In the third experiment, the number of bites removed increased with increasing depth of regrowth, and was negatively correlated with sward height. The three patch-appraisal cues investigated were broadly ranked in order of importance as (i) depth of regrowth, (ii) sward maturity and (iii) sward height. There was no evidence, at least at a short temporal scale, that patch behaviour was influenced by conditions in adjacent patches, suggesting that the cows assessed grazing opportunities on a patch-by-patch basis.
