OYARZABAL ABSTRACT The efficacy of using direct high-pressure hot water (60C, 140F) and a quaternary ammonium compound to clean the inside of stainless steel pipe used to transport chicken giblets was evaluated. The giblets were collected from a commercial processing plant and were inoculated with Campylobacter jejuni. The cleaning system was effective in reducing the numbers of inoculated C. jejuni and naturally occurring mesotrophic bacteria (aerobic plate counts) on the inside surface of the stainless steel pipe used to transport the giblets. However, the decreases in naturally occurring Escherichia coli and coliforms were not significant. These results suggest that additional improvements are needed to better disinfect the piping system used to transport giblets to reduce the potential for cross-contamination with C. jejuni and E. coli. The devised cleaning system could be optimized to reduce the use of chemical agents, the cleaning time and the cost of cleaning pipes in poultry processing facilities. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS These experiments suggest that the traditional use of hot water and quaternary ammonium compounds to clean the inside of the piping system used to transport chicken giblets may not be sufficient to reduce the contamination with Campylobacter jejuni and mesotrophic bacteria (aerobic plate count). Poultry processors should be aware of the limitations of cleaning closed piping systems and develop and test high-pressure systems to thoroughly clean the pipes used to transport giblets after processing to avoid potential sources of cross-contamination with C. jejuni and mesotrophic bacteria. AZANZA ABSTRACT The Aerobic Plate Counts (APCs) of some Philippine ready-to-eat (RTE) foods from take-away premises were established for the first time within the context of using the information for the development of Philippine microbial guidelines for RTE foods. The calculated APCs for most of the RTE foods analyzed in the study were ,,10,5 cfu/unit of food sample. Among the reasons cited to explain higher APC values were: use of raw ingredients for the final product, temperature abuse during vending, inadequate cooking and use of leftovers. It was recommended that the generally acceptable microbial guideline value for APC of RTE foods set at <,105 cfu/unit be adapted locally until more precise microbial criteria for this food type could be developed through an appropriate scientific process. [source] ABUNDANCE OF IRRAWADDY DOLPHINS (ORCAELLA BREVIROSTRIS) AND GANGES RIVER DOLPHINS (PLATANISTA GANGETICA GANGETICA) ESTIMATED USING CONCURRENT COUNTS MADE BY INDEPENDENT TEAMS IN WATERWAYS OF THE SUNDARBANS MANGROVE FOREST IN BANGLADESHMARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE, Issue 3 2006Brian D. Smith Abstract Independent observer teams made concurrent counts of Irrawaddy dolphins Orcaella brevirostris and Ganges River dolphins Platanista gangetica gangetica in mangrove channels of the Sundarbans Delta in Bangladesh. These counts were corrected for missed groups using mark-recapture models. For Irrawaddy dolphins, a stratified Lincoln-Petersen model, which incorporated group size and sighting conditions as covariates, and a Huggins conditional likelihood model, which averaged models that individually incorporated group size, sighting conditions, and channel width as covariates, generated abundance estimates of 397 individuals (CV = 10.2%) and 451 individuals (CV = 9.6%), respectively. For Ganges River dolphins, a stratified Lincoln-Petersen model, which incorporated group size as a covariate, and a Huggins conditional likelihood model, which averaged the same models described above, generated abundance estimates of 196 individuals (CV = 12.7%) and 225 individuals (CV = 12.6%), respectively. Although the estimates for both models were relatively close, the analytical advantages of the Huggins models probably outweigh those of the Lincoln-Petersen models. However, the latter should be considered appropriate when simplicity is a priority. This study found that waterways of the Sundarbans support significant numbers of Irrawaddy and Ganges River dolphins, especially compared to other areas where the species have been surveyed. [source] ELICITING A DIRECTED ACYCLIC GRAPH FOR A MULTIVARIATE TIME SERIES OF VEHICLE COUNTS IN A TRAFFIC NETWORKAUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF STATISTICS, Issue 3 2007Catriona M. Queen Summary The problem of modelling multivariate time series of vehicle counts in traffic networks is considered. It is proposed to use a model called the linear multiregression dynamic model (LMDM). The LMDM is a multivariate Bayesian dynamic model which uses any conditional independence and causal structure across the time series to break down the complex multivariate model into simpler univariate dynamic linear models. The conditional independence and causal structure in the time series can be represented by a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The DAG not only gives a useful pictorial representation of the multivariate structure, but it is also used to build the LMDM. Therefore, eliciting a DAG which gives a realistic representation of the series is a crucial part of the modelling process. A DAG is elicited for the multivariate time series of hourly vehicle counts at the junction of three major roads in the UK. A flow diagram is introduced to give a pictorial representation of the possible vehicle routes through the network. It is shown how this flow diagram, together with a map of the network, can suggest a DAG for the time series suitable for use with an LMDM. It derives maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) for the Poisson rate parameter and the two misclassification parameters , the false-negative parameter and the false-positive parameter. It also derives expressions for the information matrix and the asymptotic variances of the MLE for the rate parameter, the MLE for the false-positive parameter, and the MLE for the false-negative parameter. Using these expressions the paper analyses the value of the fallible data. It studies characteristics of the new double-sampling rate estimator via a simulation experiment and applies the new MLE estimators and confidence intervals to a real dataset. [source] Modeling Micro-Spatial Employment Location Patterns: A Comparison of Count and Choice ApproachesGEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS, Issue 2 2008Hyungtai Kim This article studies employment location patterns in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State at a micro level of geography. Traditional discrete choice modeling using multinomial logit (MNL) models may be problematic at a micro level of geography due to the high dimensionality of the set of alternative locations and the likely violations of the independence from irrelevant alternatives (IIA) assumption. Count models are free from the IIA assumption and, unlike logit models, actually benefit from large numbers of alternatives by adding degrees of freedom. This study identifies the best-fitting count model as the zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) model, because this model more effectively addresses the large number of cells with no jobs and reflects a dual process that facilitates the identification of threshold clustering effects such as those found in specialized employment centers. The estimation and prediction results of ZINB are compared with those of MNL with a random sampling of alternatives estimated on an equivalent data set. The ZINB and MNL models largely agree on major trends, with the ZINB model providing more insightful details, but with less capacity to predict large count situations. Birders are sometimes dismissed as hobbyists bent on compensating for feelings of inadequacy and lack of control in their personal lives. In this article, utilizing textual references as well as experiences from my own participant-observer status as geographer-cum-birder and bird-tour leader, I construct a geographically oriented approach to understanding the fascinations of bird-watching. I detail ethnographically the annual Christmas Bird Count and a bird walk in the Honduran rain forest. Then, drawing from the nest-as-home metaphors of Gaston Bachelard and the "becoming-bird" relationships suggested by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, I position birding as extraordinarily intimate exploration of place, reinforced by anticipation, repetition, experience of beauty, and the culminating encounter of human self, bird or bird spectacle, and landscape. Kocher Abstract Aim We used data from the annual Fourth of July Butterfly Count for the years 1989,97 to examine patterns of species richness and total butterfly abundance across North America and within topographically diverse and disturbed landscapes. Location We analysed counts from 514 different locations in North America. The counts represent all areas of the USA and southern Canada, with a few Mexican sites as well, although most counts were in the eastern USA. Methods First, we standardized published count data according to the effort expended per count (total party-hours). Using regression analysis and analysis of variance, we then examined the impact of latitude, longitude, topographical relief, habitat disturbance and different climatic measures on the species richness and total abundance of butterflies per count. We also examined the abundance of exotic species in disturbed landscapes. Results Our analyses suggest that: (1) species richness is highest at low latitudes and near Rocky Mountain longitudes; (2) the total abundance of individuals is highest in northern US latitudes and Great Plains longitudes; (3) species richness but not total abundance increases with greater topographical relief; (4) species richness and diversity indices are lower in more disturbed habitats; and (5) the abundance of the introduced Pieris rapae (L.) is greater in more disturbed habitats. Main conclusions Different factors control the abundance and species richness of North American butterflies. Along with geographical location, habitat disturbance and topographical variability affect species richness. Our analysis also shows the value of broad-based monitoring regimes, such as the North American Fourth of July Butterfly Count. [source] Phosphorylcholine-Coated Circuits Improve Preservation of Platelet Count and Reduce Expression of Proinflammatory Cytokines in CABG: A Prospective Randomized TrialJOURNAL OF CARDIAC SURGERY, Issue 4 2009Costas J. Schulze M.D. Phosphorylcholine (PC) is a new-generation coating material designed to ameliorate biocompatibility and thereby to reduce the detrimental interactions of CPB. We studied the effects of PC-coated perfusion circuits on platelet function and the humoral and cellular response to CPB. Methods: Thirty patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting were randomized to PC-coated (PC group, n = 15) and noncoated (control group, n = 15) circuit groups. Clinical data, total blood loss, and pre- and postoperative platelet counts were recorded and IL-6 and TNF-,, CD41a, CD42b, and CD62p were measured at induction of anesthesia, after the initiation of CPB and at termination of CPB. Results: There was a significantly improved preservation of platelet count following CPB in the PC group (p = 0.028), which was sustained over a period of 72 hours. The use of PC-coated circuits further resulted in a significant attenuation of TNF-, and IL-6 expression (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01); however, we were unable to detect any differences in clinical outcomes. Conclusions: Despite similar clinical outcome, the obvious reduction of cytokine expression and improved preservation of platelet count suggest superior biocompatibility of PC-coated circuits. [source] A survey of the apes in the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park, Central African Republic: a comparison between the census and survey methods of estimating the gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) nest group densityAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 1 2001A. Blom Abstract A survey of apes was carried out between October 1996 and May 1997 in the Dzanga sector of the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park, Central African Republic (CAR), to estimate gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) densities. The density estimates were based on nest counts. The strip transect census and the line transect survey method (Standing Crop Nest Count) were used to estimate the gorilla nest group density. The strip transect has been most commonly used to date. It assumes that all nest groups within the width of the strip are detected, but as this assumption is easily violated in the dense tropical rain forest, the line transect survey was also used. In this method, only the nest groups on the transect line itself should be detected. This method proved to be an adequate and easy technique for estimating animal densities in dense vegetation. The gorilla density of 1.6 individuals km,2 (line transect survey method) found for the Dzanga sector is one of the highest densities ever reported in the literature for the Western lowland gorilla. The density estimate for chimpanzees was 0.16 individuals km,2 (census method). The results of this study confirm the importance of the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park for primate conservation. Résumé Entre octobre 1996 et mai 1997, on a étudié les grands singes du secteur de Dzanga dans le Parc National de Dzanga-Ndoki, en République Centrafricaine (RCA), pour évaluer les densités de gorilles (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) et de chimpanzés (Pan troglodytes). Les estimations de densité se basaient sur le comptage des nids. On a utilisé le recensement par bande transect et la méthode de contrôle par transect linéaire (comptage réel des nids) pour estimer la densité des groupes de nids de gorilles. C'est la bande transect qui est la plus communément utilisée à ce jour. Cela suppose que l'on détecte tous les groupes de nids inclus dans la largeur de la bande, mais comme cette supposition est facilement mise en défaut dans la forêt tropicale humide dense, on a aussi utilisé la méthode des transects en ligne. Avec cette méthode, seuls les groupes de nids qui sont sur la ligne de transect doivent être détectés. Cette méthode s'est révélée une technique adéquate et facile pour estimer les densités animales dans la végétation dense. La densité des gorilles (1,6 individus / km2) relevée pour le secteur de Dzanga est une des plus élevées jamais reportées dans la littérature pour le Gorille de plaine occidental. On a estimé la densité des chimpanzés à 0,16 individus / km2 (par la méthode de recensement). [source] Methodological aspects of 3D and automated 2D analyses of white matter neuronal density in temporal lobe epilepsyNEUROPATHOLOGY & APPLIED NEUROBIOLOGY, Issue 3 2006S. H. Eriksson White matter neuronal density has been correlated with clinical outcome after temporal lobectomy for refractory epilepsy. Both morphometric 2D (two-dimensional) and stereological 3D (three-dimensional) analyses of neuronal density have been performed. 3D analyses are thought to be more accurate than 2D counts, but more time-consuming. We compared 3D and automated 2D measurements in the same specimens. Adjacent 20-µm (for 3D analyses) and 5-µm (for 2D analyses) sections from 10 temporal lobectomies were stained for NeuN immunohistochemistry. Analysis of 100% of a region of interest (ROI) in deep white matter was performed using an image analysis system (Histometrix, Kinetic Imaging, UK). 3D analyses were undertaken using ×,63 magnification (6 h/case). Automated 2D analyses were undertaken using automatic neuronal identification at ×,10 magnification with three to four repeats (1.5 h/case). The range of neuronal densities for 3D measurements was 2120,4910 neurones/mm3, and for automated 2D measurements 17.4,47.1 neurones/mm2. There was a linear correlation between the two methods with an r2 of 0.58. The limits of agreement for the two methods were 1718 to ,2234 neurones/mm3. Count,recount variability was 1.4,9.9% for the 3D and 5.1,36.6% for the automated 2D measurements. We found a wide range of white matter neuronal densities using either analysis. The low agreement between methods, and the high count,recount variability for the automated 2D analyses, indicate that despite being more time-consuming, rigorous 3D stereological analyses have to be performed to obtain reliable results. These findings have implications for studies requiring neuronal counts in normal and disease states. The complement system may play a role in the pathogenesis of this condition. We sought to determine serum complement 3 (C3) levels and its regulatory protein complement factor H (FH) in the HELLP syndrome. Method of study, Twenty-two pre-eclamptic patients with HELLP syndrome (mean age: 27.8 ± 6.2 years), 21 pre-eclamptic patients without HELLP syndrome (mean age: 27.5 ± 6.8 years) and 24 normotensive, healthy pregnant women (mean age: 26.1 ± 4.4 years) were included in this study. Serum concentrations of C3 and FH were measured in all participants. Results, Concentrations of C3 and FH did not differ significantly between the study groups. In patients with the HELLP syndrome, FH levels were positively associated with platelet count. Conclusion, These findings did not support a major role of complement activation in the HELLP syndrome. In patients with HELLP, lower levels of FH are correlated with a reduced platelet count. [source] White Blood Cell Count and the Occurrence of Silent Ischemia after Myocardial InfarctionANNALS OF NONINVASIVE ELECTROCARDIOLOGY, Issue 1 2003gorzata Kurpesa Background: Inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Attempts are made to use markers of inflammation as prognostic factors in coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes. The correlation between inflammation and silent postinfarction ischemia is unknown. Methods: The study population consists of 104 asymptomatic patients who had uncomplicated Q-wave myocardial infarction within 6 months prior to the enrollment. After the white blood cell (WBC) count was assessed, the population was divided into two groups: group I comprising 48 patients with WBC , 7.0 × 103/,l and group II comprising 56 patients with WBC > 7.0 × 103/,l. Twenty-four-hour Holter monitoring was performed to detect the presence of silent ischemia. Results: Eighty-eight silent ischemic episodes were recorded. Ischemia on Holter monitoring was detected in 47 patients (84%) from group II and in five patients (9%) in group I (P < 0.01). We have found a significant positive correlation between WBC count and the number of ischemic episodes (r = 0.25), their maximal amplitude (r = 0.39), duration (r = 0.34), and total ischemic burden (r = 0.36). In multivariate analysis leucocytosis proved to be the only parameter independently correlated with the presence of silent ischemia. Conclusion: Postinfarction asymptomatic patients with increased WBC count are more likely to have residual ischemia. [source] The effects of sub-conjunctival EPO administration on ERG and on the peripheral blood haematocrit in animal model (rabbit)ACTA OPHTHALMOLOGICA, Issue 2009E DELGADO Purpose To assess the effects of subconjunctival EPO administration on retinal eletrophysiology and on the peripheral blood haematocrit. Methods New Zealand White rabbits (n=6) received 100 UI of EPO through the subconjuntival route. Blood for Complete Blood Count (CBC) was collected on day 0, on day 7 and on day 14 of the experimental protocol. Furthermore electroretinograms were performed on day 0 and on day 30 of the experiments. Results Regarding CBC changes, the haematocrit values changed from 35,42±2,7% on day 0 to 34,32±4,3% (p=0,390) on day 7 and to 34,45±4,4% on day 14 (p=0,931), showing no significant changes. Concerning the red blood cells (RBC x10000/µL) count, the values evolved from 6,02±0,48 on day 0 to 5,65±0,67 (p=0,074) on day 7 and to 5,67±0,74 (p=0,948) on day 14, showing no significant alterations. On the contrary, on what regards the electroretinograms, although there were no significant changes on a-wave amplitudes, which evolved from 13,94±1,7 µV on day 0 to 13,67±0,8 µV on day 30 (p=0,844) and no significant differences on N1-P1 amplitudes which changed from 46,60±4,5µV to 55,48±10,5 µV (p=0,438), there was a remarkable increase on b-wave amplitude of 49%, changing from 46,60±7,43 µV to 94,97±13,36 µV (p=0,031). Conclusion On what concerns CBC profiles, subconjuntival EPO administration did not cause any sinificant changes on haematocrit or RBC values. Regarding electrorretinography, there were no significant changes on a-wave or N1-P1 amplitudes, but there was a marked increase in the b-wave amplitude which tests for photoreceptor functionality, which might indicate a protective action against apoptosis of retinal photoreceptors even in physiological conditions. [source] Low Recruitment of Trees Dispersed by Animals in African Forest FragmentsCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 6 2001N. J. Cordeiro We compared adult and juvenile trees in forest transects in a 3500,ha submontane forest with those in four forest fragments of 521, 30, 9, and 0.5 ha. Preliminary results show that recruitment of seedlings and juveniles of 31 animal-dispersed tree species was more than three times greater in continuous forest and large forest fragments (,30 ha) than in small forest fragments (,9 ha), whereas recruitment of eight wind- and gravity-dispersed trees of the forest interior was unaffected. Recruitment of 10 endemic, animal-dispersed tree species was 40 times lower in small fragments than in continuous forest or large fragments. Counts of diurnal primates and birds in all five sites indicated that frugivorous species have declined with decreasing fragment size. These results are consistent with the idea that loss of dispersal agents depresses tree recruitment in the course of forest fragmentation. Resumen: Investigamos los efectos de la fragmentación del bosque en la desaparición de animales frugívoros y el reclutamiento de árboles dispersados por animales y viento en parches de bosques de 80 años de edad en las montañas del este de Usambara, Tanzania. Comparamos árboles adultos y juveniles en transectos de bosque en un bosque submontañoso de 3500 ha con transectos de cuatro fragmentos de bosque de 521, 30, 9 y 0.5 ha. Los resultados preliminares muestran que el reclutamiento de plántulas y juveniles especies de árboles dispersados por animales fue tres veces mayor en el bosque continuo y fragmentos grandes (,30 ha) que en fragmentos pequeños (,9 ha), mientras que el reclutamiento de ocho árboles dispersados por viento y gravedad del interior del bosque no fue afectado. El reclutamiento de 10 especies endémicas de árboles dispersados por animales fue 40 veces menor en los fragmentos pequeños que en el bosque continuo o en los fragmentos grandes. [source] Alcohol outlet density and university student drinking: a national studyADDICTION, Issue 7 2008Kypros Kypri ABSTRACT Aims To examine the geographic density of alcohol outlets and associations with drinking levels and related problems among university students. Design Cross-sectional survey study using geospatial data, with campus-level and individual-level analyses. Participants A total of 2550 students (mean age 20.2, 60% women) at six university campuses in New Zealand (63% response). Measurements Counts of alcohol outlets within 3 km of each campus were tested for their non-parametric correlation with aggregated campus drinking levels and related problems. Generalized estimating equations were used to model the relation between outlet counts within 1 km and 3 km of student residences and individual drinking levels/problems, with control for gender, age, ethnicity and high school binge drinking frequency, and adjustment for campus-level clustering. Findings Correlations for campus-level data were 0.77 (P = 0.07) for drinking and personal problems, and 0.31 (P = 0.54) for second-hand effects. There were consistent significant associations of both on- and off-licence outlet densities with all outcomes in student-level adjusted models. Effects were largest for 1 km densities and off-licence outlets. Conclusions There are positive associations between alcohol outlet density and individual drinking and related problems. Associations remain after controlling for demographic variables and pre-university drinking, i.e. the associations are unlikely to be due to self-selection effects. Increasing alcohol outlet density, and particularly off-licences, may increase alcohol-related harm among university students. [source] FDG-PET Images Quantified by Probabilistic Atlas of Brain and Surgical Prognosis of Temporal Lobe EpilepsyEPILEPSIA, Issue 9 2002Sang Kun Lee Summary: ,Purpose: This study evaluated the relation between hypometabolism, diagnosed by fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), and the surgical outcome of a large and homogeneous series of cases of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE), by using a probabilistic atlas of the human brain (statistical probabilistic anatomical maps: SPAM). Methods: Ninety-five surgically proven intractable mTLE patients and 22 age-matched controls were spatially normalized to the average brain PET template of international consortium of brain mapping (ICBM). The diagnosis of mTLE was confirmed by the presence of hippocampal sclerosis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and video-EEG monitoring. Counts from normalized PET images were multiplied by the probability from 98 volumes of interest (VOIs) of SPAM. Asymmetric indexes (AIs) reflecting the severity of hypometabolism were calculated by counts of selected 12 VOIs from SPAM images in both temporal lobes. Extent of hypometabolism was determined by the number of voxels showing decreased metabolism in each VOI segmented by SPAM. Results: Of the 95 patients studied, 76 (80%) were seizure free, and 19 (20%) had postoperative seizures for the ,2-year follow-up period. No significant association between the severity of hypometabolism in each VOI of the temporal lobe and surgical outcome was identified (p > 0.05). The number of voxels showing decreased hypometabolism was not significantly different between the good- and poor-outcome groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that focal severity and extent of hypometabolism quantified by a probabilistic atlas of brain were not related to the surgical outcome in mTLE patients who had hippocampal sclerosis on MRI. We should develop a more localized and specified anatomic map for mTLE for further results. [source] Situation of the whiteflies Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum in protected tomato crops in Algarve (Portugal),EPPO BULLETIN, Issue 1 2002N. E. Ramos Protected tomato is the most important horticultural crop in the Algarve (south of Portugal). However, the growing area has decreased by almost 48% since 1995, mainly as a result of the pests Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum and the epidemics of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), a Begomovirus transmitted by B. tabaci. Both whiteflies are vectors of economically important viruses. Recently, Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), a member of the genus Crinivirus, transmitted by both B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum, was reported infecting tomato crops in Algarve. A study was carried out to evaluate the dynamics of whitefly populations on tomato crops in Algarve. Population counts of B. tabaci were high in the first months of autumn, then decreased until January, when numbers of T. vaporariorum became higher. Counts of B. tabaci then increased again. Smith Abstract Primary care outreach placements increasingly feature in UK undergraduate dental curricula. The profile of clinical work undertaken on placement may differ from traditional hospital-based programmes and between outreach settings. An appreciation of any differences could inform curriculum development. Objective:, To compare the profiles of clinical work experienced on a traditional hospital-based programme and outreach placements in different settings. Setting:, One dental hospital and eight existing primary care block placements in England. Subjects and methods:, Subjects were four cohorts of senior dental students in one UK dental school. Departmental records provided data on students' clinical experience in different settings and their achievement of placement learning objectives. Descriptive statistics for groups were compared. Main outcome measures:, (1) Counts of patients encountered and of clinical procedures completed in the following categories: simple plastic restorations, endodontics, cast restorations, dentures, extractions and children's dentistry. (2) Student perceptions of placement learning reported via Likert scales. Results:, Outreach students encountered twice as many patients and typically completed about three times as much clinical work as students in the hospital, e.g. 44 cf 16 simple plastic restorations, seven cf two endodontic procedures. There were variations in profiles by setting. For example, amalgam being more likely to be used on outreach especially in the General Dental Service; more children's dentistry in community services and more extractions in Dental Access Centres. Students reported learning outcomes generally being achieved (average 94%) although with some variation by setting. Conclusion:, Dental outreach training greatly increases the quantity of students' clinical experience in everyday dentistry compared to a hospital-based programme. Placements also increase awareness of service delivery and develop clinical skills. There are appreciable variations between outreach settings possibly reflecting their purposes. Multiple contrasting outreach placements for each student might increase the uniformity of learning experiences. Gatzinsky Abstract We have examined the hypothesis that differences in nerve growth factor (NGF) uptake and transport determine vulnerability to age-related neurodegeneration. Neurons projecting to cerebral blood vessels (CV) in aged rats are more vulnerable to age-related degeneration than those projecting to the iris. Uptake of NGF was therefore examined in sympathetic neurons projecting from the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) to CV and iris in young and old rats by treating the peripheral processes of these neurons with different doses of I125 -NGF. Total uptake of I125 -NGF was reduced in old CV-projecting, but not iris-projecting, neurons. Numbers of radiolabelled neurons projecting to each target were counted in sectioned ganglia. The data showed age-related reductions in numbers of labelled neurons projecting to CV, but no change in numbers of neurons projecting to the iris. Calculation of uptake of I125 -NGF per neuron unexpectedly showed no major age-related differences in either of the two neuron populations. However, uptake per neuron was considerably lower for young and old CV-projecting, compared to iris-projecting, SCG neurons. We hypothesized that variations in NGF uptake might affect neuronal survival in old age. Counts of SCG neurons using a physical disector following retrograde tracing with Fluorogold confirmed the selective vulnerability of CV-projecting neurons by showing a significant 37% loss of these neurons in the period between 15 and 24 months. In contrast, there was no significant loss of iris-projecting neurons. We conclude that vulnerability to, or protection from, age-related neurodegeneration and neuronal cell death are associated with life-long low, or high, levels of NGF uptake, respectively. [source] Of squeezers and skippers: factors determining the age at moult of immature African Penguins Spheniscus demersus in NamibiaIBIS, Issue 2 2005JESSICA KEMPER We used banding and resighting records of 391 African Penguins Spheniscus demersus banded as chicks and later resighted during immature moult to explain the roles of date of fledging and age at moult in determining the season of moult and its timing within the season. Breeding was continuous, but immature moult occurred mainly during spring and summer. Age at immature moult extended over 11 months, from 12 to 23 months after hatching. Birds that fledged during summer and early autumn generally moulted during the next moult season (squeezers), whereas birds that fledged in late autumn, winter and spring skipped the next moult season to moult only the following season (skippers). There was a significant relationship between age at moult and moult date, with young birds moulting later in the season than older birds. The age at moult of immature birds appears to be constrained by minimum age, moult seasonality and plumage wear. Birds that fledged over nearly 2 years moult during one season. Counts of moulting immature African Penguins have not been used to estimate year-class strength and post-fledging survival owing to the wide range of ages at immature moult. Our results provide the means of assigning recruits to specific age groups. Gent Conventional wisdom suggests that biased military interventions in civil conflicts should increase the probability that the supported side will win. However, while this is the case for rebel groups, the same is not true for governments. The explanation for this surprising finding becomes clear once one considers the decision of a third-party intervener. Since interveners want to impact the outcomes of civil conflict, government- and rebel-biased interventions will be more likely when the government is facing a stronger rebel group. Given that government-biased third parties intervene in the ,,toughest'' cases, empirically they appear to be less effective than rebel-biased interveners. Milsom 1.,Coastal grazing marshes comprise an important habitat for wetland biota but are threatened by agricultural intensification and conversion to arable farmland. In Britain, the Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) scheme addresses these problems by providing financial incentives to farmers to retain their grazing marshes, and to follow conservation management prescriptions. 2.,A modelling approach was used to aid the development of management prescriptions for ground-nesting birds in the North Kent Marshes ESA. This ESA contains the largest area of coastal grazing marsh remaining in England and Wales (c. 6500 ha) and supports nationally important breeding populations of lapwing Vanellus vanellus and redshank Tringa totanus. 3.,Counts of ground-nesting birds, and assessments of sward structure, surface topography and wetness, landscape structure and sources of human disturbance were made in 1995 and again in 1996, on 19 land-holdings with a combined area of c. 3000 ha. The land-holdings varied from nature reserves at one extreme to an intensive dairy farm at the other. 4.,Models of relationship between the presence or absence of ground-nesting birds and the grazing marsh habitat in each of c. 430 marshes were constructed using a generalized linear mixed modelling (GLMM) method. This is an extension to the conventional logistic regression approach, in which a random term is used to model differences in the proportion of marshes occupied on different land-holdings. 5.,The combined species models predicted that the probability of marshes being occupied by at least one ground-nesting species increased concomitantly with the complexity of the grass sward and surface topography but decreased in the presence of hedgerows, roads and power lines. 6.,Models were also prepared for each of the 10 most widespread species, including lapwing and redshank. Their composition differed between species. Variables describing the sward were included in models for five species: heterogeneity of sward height tended to be more important than mean sward height. Surface topography and wetness were important for waders and wildfowl but not for other species. Effects of boundaries, proximity to roads and power lines were included in some models and were negative in all cases. 7.,Binomial GLMMs are useful for investigating habitat factors that affect the distribution of birds at two nested spatial scales, in this case fields (marshes) grouped within farms. Fegan Abstract Aims:, A survey to determine the prevalence and numbers of Salmonella in beef cattle presented for slaughter at abattoirs across Australia was conducted between September 2002 and January 2003. Methods and Results:, Automated immunomagnetic separation (AIMS) was used for detection and isolation of Salmonella enriched from cattle faeces. Salmonella were enumerated from positive samples using a combination of the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique and AIMS. A total of 310 faecal samples were tested, 155 were from lot-fed cattle and 155 from grass-fed cattle. Salmonella spp. were isolated from 21 (6·8%) of the cattle and the prevalence amongst grass-fed cattle (4·5%) was not significantly different to that found in lot-fed cattle (9%). Counts of Salmonella in positive faeces varied from <3 MPN g,1 of faeces to 2·8 × 103 MPN g,1 and 71% of positive samples had counts <10 MPN g,1 faeces. There was no significant difference in the mean log10 number of Salmonella in faeces of cattle from each production system. Conclusion:, Low numbers of beef cattle were found to shed Salmonella at the time of slaughter and the prevalence and the associated faecal concentrations did not vary significantly with the pre-slaughter production system (grass or lot feeding). The faecal concentration of Salmonella in the majority of faeces was low (<10 MPN g,1) with few high concentrations up to 3 × 103 MPN g,1, suggesting there may be a low risk of carcase contamination. Significance and Impact of the Study:, Beef cattle do not appear to be a major source of entry of Salmonella into the human food chain and the quantitative information contained in this study can be used in quantitative assessments of the associated risk of human salmonellosis.
