Selected AbstractsBreast cancer risk factors in Korean women: a literature reviewINTERNATIONAL NURSING REVIEW, Issue 3 2008S.-M. Lee rn Aim:, To compile a complete list of risk factors from the Korean breast cancer studies to obtain relevant predictor information essential in developing a predictive model for breast cancer. Background:, Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed female cancer in Korea. However, the breast cancer-screening rate in Korea is relatively low compared with that in other countries. In order to promote early health screening, there is a need to identify those individuals who are most likely to develop breast cancer by using an accurate predictive model. Methods:, Thirty-four breast cancer studies were selected from MEDLINE and two Korean literature databases. Two researchers summarized the risk factors and their effects in each article using a checklist. Findings:, Most of the studies were case,control studies conducted after 2000. In 34 articles, a total of 84 risk factors for breast cancer in Korean women were identified; of these, 58 factors were determined as statistically significant factors. The factors identified most often were body mass index, menarche, menopause, family history, pregnancy and delivery, breastfeeding, alcohol use, smoking habits, diet, education and use of oral contraceptives. None of 34 studies looked at stress as a risk factor of which influence on cancer has been reported in other populations. Conclusion:, The next steps will be to construct a questionnaire consisting of relevant variables based on these study results and to develop a predictive model. This would be used to encourage those Koreans who are more likely to develop breast cancer to have early check-ups. [source] X-Cell: a novel indexing algorithm for routine tasks and difficult casesJOURNAL OF APPLIED CRYSTALLOGRAPHY, Issue 2 2003Marcus A. Neumann X-Cell is a novel indexing algorithm that makes explicit use of systematic absences to search for possible indexing solutions from cells with low numbers of calculated reflections to cells with high numbers of reflections. Space groups with the same pattern of systematic absences are grouped together in powder extinction classes, and for a given peak number range an independent search is carried out in each powder extinction class. The method has the advantage that the correct cell is likely to be found before the rapid increase of possible solutions slows down the search significantly. A successive dichotomy approach is used to establish a complete list of all possible indexing solutions. The dichotomy procedure is combined with a search for the zero-point shift of the diffraction pattern, and impurity peaks can be dealt with by allowing for a user-defined portion of unindexed reflections. To rank indexing solutions with varying numbers of unindexed reflections, a new figure of merit is introduced that takes into account the highest level of agreement typically obtained for completely incorrect unit cells. The indexing of long and flat unit cells is facilitated by the possibility to search for rows or zones in reciprocal space first and then to use the lattice parameters of the dominant row or zone in the unit-cell search. The main advantages of X-Cell are robustness and completeness, as demonstrated by a validation study on a variety of compounds. The dominant phase of phase mixtures can be indexed in the presence of up to 50% of impurity peaks if high-quality synchrotron data are available. [source] Knowledge creation and exploitation in collaborative R&D projects: lessons learned on success factorsKNOWLEDGE AND PROCESS MANAGEMENT: THE JOURNAL OF CORPORATE TRANSFORMATION, Issue 4 2006Mona Weck This paper examines the management of collaborative R&D projects with customers. Prior research on social network theory and the knowledge-based view has identified some of the key conditions of successful collaboration. However, the actual management of project dynamics has received less attention. This paper addresses this gap in existing research through a case study on the management of inter-firm R&D projects in a large European telecommunications operator. It provides a cross-project comparison on the process of knowledge creation and exploitation in five collaborative R&D projects with customers. The objective of this research is to increase current understanding on the success factors of collaborative R&D projects. As a result of this paper, the creation of a genuine ,win-win' situation, clear roles and responsibilities, the customer-oriented approach and the exchange of complementary specialist knowledge are found to be key critical success factors in the process of inter-firm knowledge creation. Moreover, this paper indicates that the viability of the business opportunity is the primary success factor in knowledge exploitation. In addition to identifying these success factors, the paper provides a more complete list of lessons learned from collaborative R&D projects with customers. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Time series analysis of ultraviolet B radiation and type 1 diabetes in NewfoundlandPEDIATRIC DIABETES, Issue 2 2008Scott Sloka Background:, Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been previously been associated with decreased levels of vitamin D. This study investigates the temporal association between average daily ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiance and T1DM in Newfoundland. Methods:, A complete list of patients diagnosed with T1DM in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador was constructed using multiple sources. Pooled and unpooled monthly incidence data along with monthly UVB measurements were used to build a time series transfer function model. The model was used to predict the future incidence of T1DM based on previous monthly trends, and these predictions were compared with actual measured incidences. Results:, A seasonal variation in pooled monthly incidence was observed. The transfer function model was able to reasonably predict the future incidence of T1DM based on previous observations and monthly UVB measurements. Tests of seasonality demonstrated a significant seasonal trend (p = 0.0003). Conclusions:, This study suggests that erythemal UVB radiation may be temporally associated with the incidence of T1DM. [source] Do child psychiatrists in Germany diagnose bipolar disorders in children and adolescents?BIPOLAR DISORDERS, Issue 5 2004Results from a survey Objectives:, There is a controversy about the prevalence of childhood bipolar disorders (BD). Based on discrepant results, we studied if German psychiatrists in outpatient settings diagnose BD in children and adolescents at all, and if there are possible correlates of the diagnoses of pediatric BD. We also asked how often typical manic symptoms (e.g. elated mood) are actually seen in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients. Methods:, Provided by the medical register we had a complete list of all 251 psychiatrists in the area. Using a questionnaire we asked if and how often they diagnose BD among children and adolescents and how often they observe manic-like symptoms in children with ADHD (response rate 61%). Results:, While 63% of all psychiatrists have diagnosed BD in adolescents, only 7.8% did so in children. Age and therapeutic approach of the psychiatrists were associated with the likelihood of having diagnosed BD in children. Furthermore some typical bipolar symptoms were also present in ADHD patients. Conclusions:, Our study only relied on self-reports of the psychiatrists about the diagnoses and number of cases, but BD in children seems to be rarely diagnosed in outpatient settings in Germany. The design of our study, however, cannot resolve the questions what the reasons are for this low rate of BD diagnoses, e.g. misdiagnoses, overlooking comorbidity or referral strategies. Epidemiological studies are needed and should consider multiple follow-ups. [source] Photoaffinity Isolation and Identification of Proteins in Cancer Cell Extracts that Bind to Platinum-Modified DNACHEMBIOCHEM, Issue 1 2009Evan R. Guggenheim Dr. Abstract The activity of the anticancer drug cisplatin is a consequence of its ability to bind DNA. Platinum adducts bend and unwind the DNA duplex, creating recognition sites for nuclear proteins. Following DNA damage recognition, the lesions will either be repaired, facilitating cell viability, or if repair is unsuccessful and the Pt adduct interrupts vital cellular functions, apoptosis will follow. With the use of the benzophenone-modified cisplatin analogue Pt-BP6, 25 bp DNA duplexes containing either a 1,2-d(G*pG*) intrastrand or a 1,3-d(G*pTpG*) intrastrand crosslink were synthesized, where the asterisks designate platinated nucleobases. Proteins having affinity for these platinated DNAs were photocrosslinked and identified in cervical, testicular, pancreatic and bone cancer-cell nuclear extracts. Proteins identified in this manner include the DNA repair factors RPA1, Ku70, Ku80, Msh2, DNA ligase III, PARP-1, and DNA,PKcs, as well as HMG-domain proteins HMGB1, HMGB2, HMGB3, and UBF1. The latter strongly associate with the 1,2-d(G*pG*) adduct and weakly or not at all with the 1,3-d(G*pTpG*) adduct. The nucleotide excision repair protein RPA1 was photocrosslinked only by the probe containing a 1,3-d(G*pTpG*) intrastrand crosslink. The affinity of PARP-1 for platinum-modified DNA was established using this type of probe for the first time. To ensure that the proteins were not photocrosslinked because of an affinity for DNA ends, a 90-base dumbbell probe modified with Pt-BP6 was investigated. Photocrosslinking experiments with this longer probe revealed the same proteins, as well as some additional proteins involved in chromatin remodeling, transcription, or repair. These findings reveal a more complete list of proteins involved in the early steps of the mechanism of action of the cisplatin and its close analogue carboplatin than previously was available. [source] Biomarkers for exposure to estrogenic compounds: Gene expression analysis in zebrafish (Danio rerio)ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY, Issue 1 2008Ulf Kausch Abstract Gene expression analyses in male zebrafish (Danio rerio) were carried out using microarray technique and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Genes responding to the exposure to 17,-estradiol, bisphenol A and genistein were identified, among them genes involved in metabolism, reproductional and developmental processes. Threshold levels of 17,-estradiol (200 ng/L), bisphenol A (2000 ,g/L), and genistein (5000 ,g/L) for the upregulation of the vtg1 gene in short-time exposures (11 days) were determined by qPCR. 14k microarrays were used to generate complete lists of genes regulated by these estrogenic compounds. For this purpose, liver samples from 10 exposed zebrafish and 10 controls were processed. In this case the expressions of 211 genes were significantly regulated by 17,-estradiol, 47 by bisphenol A and 231 by genistein. Furthermore, it is shown that fish exposed to 17,-estradiol and genistein have similarities in their gene expression patterns, whereas bisphenol A apparently affected gene expression in a different way. Only genes coding for egg-yolk precursor protein vitellogenin were found to be regulated by all three compounds, which shows that these genes are the only suitable markers for exposure to different estrogenic compounds. The regulated genes were assigned to gene ontology classes. All three estrogenic compounds regulated genes mainly involved in primary and cellular metabolism, but genistein regulated several genes involved in cell cycle-regulation and bisphenol A several genes involved in protein biosynthesis. [source] Uncountable graphs and invariant measures on the set of universal countable graphsRANDOM STRUCTURES AND ALGORITHMS, Issue 3 2010Fedor Petrov Abstract We give new examples and describe the complete lists of all measures on the set of countable homogeneous universal graphs and Ks -free homogeneous universal graphs (for s , 3) that are invariant with respect to the group of all permutations of the vertices. Such measures can be regarded as random graphs (respectively, random Ks -free graphs). The well-known example of Erdös,Rényi (ER) of the random graph corresponds to the Bernoulli measure on the set of adjacency matrices. For the case of the universal Ks -free graphs there were no previously known examples of the invariant measures on the space of such graphs. The main idea of our construction is based on the new notions of measurable universal, and topologically universal graphs, which are interesting themselves. The realization of the construction can be regarded as two-step randomization for universal measurable graph : "randomization in vertices" and "randomization in edges." For Ks -free, s , 3, there is only randomization in vertices of the measurable graphs. Alg., 2010 [source] Bat Species Richness in Atlantic Forest: What Is the Minimum Sampling Effort?BIOTROPICA, Issue 2 2003Helena Godoy Bergallo ABSTRACT Species lists are sources of information for studies of both conservation and macroecology. It is, however, important to differentiate between relatively complete lists and extremely incomplete ones. The aim of this study was to evaluate how sampling effort typically used in inventories affects the number of bat species captured in areas of Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. We also evaluated if the number of sampled sites, size of the sampled area, and sampling effort (net hours) affect species richness. We used previously reported data from studies in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais States, and our own data collected during 1989 and 2001. Nonlinear models fit well the data for Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais States and all states together, but not for São Paulo State. Genera richness showed a similar pattern to that of species richness. The model used to explain the relationship between species richness and size of the study area, number of sites, and sampling effort sampled was significant. The number of sites sampled explained a significant part of the variation observed; however, other variables contributed nothing to the model, suggesting that capturing beta diversity is the most important aspect of biodiversity surveys for bats, and that increasing net hours at a given location is much more inefficient than distributing net hours across locations. We suggest 1000 captures as the minimum necessary when sampling with mist nets to capture the majority of phyllostomid species for a given site (alpha diversity). In addition, we suggest that shifting the position of the mist nets between nights will increase the probability of capturing more species. RESUMO As listas de espécies são fontes de informações para estudos, tanto de conservação quanto de macroecologia. Entretanto, é importante diferenciar entre listas relativamente completas daquelas seriamente incompletas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar como o esforco amostral mínimo tipicamente usado em inventários afeta o número de especies de morcegos capturados em áreas de Mata Atlãntica do sudeste do Brasil. Nós também avaliamos se o número de pontos amostrados, o tamanho da área amostrada e o esforço de captura (hora-rede) afetam a riqueza de espécies. Nós usamos dados disponíveis de estudos desenvolvidos nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Minas Gerais, e os nossos próprios dados coletados de 1989 a 2001. Modelos não-lineares se ajustaram para os estados do Rio de Janeiro e Minas Gerais e todos os estados juntos, mas não para o Estado de São Paulo. A riqueza de g,neros mostrou o mesmo padrão da riqueza de espécies. O modelo usado para expliçãr a relacao entre riqueza de espécies e tamanho da área de estudo, número de pontos amostrados e esforço amostral foi significative. O número de pontos amostrados explicou uma parte significante da variação observada. Contudo, as outras variáveis não contribuiram para o modelo, sugerindo que capturar a diversidade Beta é o aspecto mais importante de inventários de biodiversidade para morcegos, e que o aumento de horas-rede numa dada localidade é muito mais ineficiente do que distribuir horas-rede entre localidades. Nós sugerimos 1000 capturas como o mínimo necessário para amostrar, com redes de neblina, a maioria das espécies de filostomídeos de uma dada área (diversidade Alfa). Adicionalmente, sugerimos que mudando a posição das redes entre noites aumentará a probabilidade de capturar um maior número de espéciesS. [source] |
