Selected AbstractsImmediate and Midterm Complications of Sclerotherapy: Report of a Prospective Multicenter Registry of 12,173 Sclerotherapy SessionsDERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 2 2005FACPH, Jean-Jérôme Guex MD Background Growing interest in sclerotherapy has emphasized the need for complete knowledge of all aspects of this method. Objective To precisely delineate the actual incidence of immediate and delayed untoward events of daily sclerotherapy. Methods A multicenter prospective registry was established in 22 phlebology clinics to report their activity and complications. Results During the study period, 12,173 sessions of sclerotherapy were carried out, 5,434 with liquid, 6,395 with foam, and 344 using both. Four thousand eighty-eight (33.9%) sessions were carried out with ultrasound guidance. Forty-nine incidents or accidents (0.4%) occurred, of which 12 were with liquid and 37 with foam. These were reported during the time of the study and an additional 1-month follow-up. Most numerous were 20 cases of visual disturbances (in 19 cases, foam or air block was used); all resolved shortly, without any after-effects. A femoral vein thrombosis was the only severe adverse event in this study. Conclusions This study demonstrates that sclerotherapy is a safe technique. [source] Testimony and Trauma in Herta Müller's HerztierGERMAN LIFE AND LETTERS, Issue 1 2000Beverley Driver Eddy This article attempts to distinguish between testimony (an account of one's personal, limited knowledge of a crime or an atrocity) and trauma (a reconstructed life-story intended to overcome a troubling, recurring memory by locating that memory within its larger, historical context). It is the author's contention that Herta Müller's novel Herztier is a skilful blending of testimony and trauma narrative that illuminates the terrors of the Ceaus¸escu dictatorship and their lasting impact on its survivors. The testimonial aspects of the novel reveal one's inability to achieve complete knowledge of another's trauma, while the trauma narrative, through skilful incorporation of recurring, ,transfinite' images into the text, links the personal stories of the narrator and her friends by subsuming them and making them part of the history of a larger, national trauma. As Müller's novel makes clear, neither testimony nor trauma narrative is able to heal or bring closure to the victims of the Romanian state terror. [source] Pair designing as practice for enforcing and diffusing design knowledgeJOURNAL OF SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE AND EVOLUTION: RESEARCH AND PRACTICE, Issue 6 2005Emilio Bellini Abstract Evolving software's design requires that the members of the team acquire a deep and complete knowledge of the domain, the architectural components, and their integration. Such information is scarcely addressed within the design documentation and it is not trivial to derive it. A strategy for enforcing the consciousness of such hidden aspects of software's design is needed. One of the expected benefits of pair programming is fostering (tacit) knowledge building between the components of the pair and fastening its diffusion within the project's team. We have applied the paradigm of pair programming to the design phase and we have named it ,pair designing'. We have realized an experiment and a replica in order to understand if pair designing can be used as an effective means for diffusing and enforcing the design knowledge while evolving the system's design. [source] Elementary Propositions and Essentially Incomplete Knowledge: A Framework for the Interpretation of Quantum MechanicsNOUS, Issue 1 2004William Demopoulos A central problem in the interpretation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics is to relate the conceptual structure of the theory to the classical idea of the state of a physical system. This paper approaches the problem by presenting an analysis of the notion of an elementary physical proposition. The notion is shown to be realized in standard formulations of the theory and to illuminate the significance of proofs of the impossibility of hidden variable extensions. In the interpretation of quantum mechanics that emerges from this analysis, the philosophically distinctive features of the theory derive from the fact that it seeks to represent a reality of which complete knowledge is essentially unattainable. Therefore, complete knowledge about the activation patterns of the chewing muscles belonging to a specific resultant bite force can only be gained either by simultaneous force- and EMG-measurement or with the help of optimization strategies. In this study, such EMG and force measurements were carried out with 10 test persons and the results compared to those computed with several objective functions. The results show an increase of the joint forces with an increase of the horizontal component of the resultant bite force. The test persons seem to favor energy minimization as control mechanism. Rojas Abstract Gas hydrates attracted intense research interest when it was first recognised some 70 years ago that they were responsible for the blockage of flow lines, valves and well heads, thereby causing great loss of production and other severe safety hazards to the oil and gas industry. After many decades, these compounds are still the topic of research activities in various multi-disciplinary fields, including chemical and petroleum engineering, earth and geophysics, chemistry and environmental sciences. This is not only due to the great impact that these compounds have on the oil and gas industry, but also to the potential applications they have in many evolving areas, including, but not only, natural gas storage and transportation, carbon dioxide sequestration, and sea-water desalination. It is generally accepted that gas hydrates represent the largest source of hydrocarbons on earth, something which has not been appreciated until only recently. Management, either prevention or application or both, of gas hydrates requires a complete knowledge and understanding of the formation, decomposition and inhibition mechanisms of gas hydrates, which in turn demands advanced experimental methods and instrumental techniques for gas hydrate characterisation. This paper reviews a broad range of techniques that have been used for natural gas hydrate characterisation. It includes the basic physical science principles of each method and the gas hydrate properties that each method is capable of detecting, including some modern instrumental analyses that enable direct determination of gas hydrate phases and possible measurement of molecular interactions within the fluid phases. [source] Aggregation characteristics of ovalbumin in ,-sheet conformation determined by spectroscopyBIOPOLYMERS, Issue 2 2002Raimon Sabaté Abstract Protein misfolding and aggregation are involved in a number of the so-called "conformational" diseases (e.g., transmissible spongiform encephalopathies and Alzheimer disease). The development of rational strategies to interfere with aggregation is a potential therapeutic approach that requires complete knowledge of the aggregation process. We studied the aggregation of ovalbumin in ,-sheet conformation using mainly the spectral changes in the spectra of two dyes (Congo Red and pinacyanol) caused by the aggregates. We assumed a linear model of polymerization that fit to the experimental data. The critical aggregation constant, concentration of half-aggregation, nucleation parameter, growth parameter, and number of aggregation and free energy changes (total and per residue) were determined as aggregation-related parameters. ,-Ovalbumin aggregates in a cooperative way. Moreover, the differences between such parameters obtained with Congo Red and pinacyanol suggest that each dye interacts with the protein in its own way. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
