Selected AbstractsComplete dissolution and hydrolysis of wood in hot waterAICHE JOURNAL, Issue 10 2008Zhen Fang Abstract When willow and water were heated rapidly (7,16°C/s) to high temperatures and high pressures, most of willow (90 vol %) dissolved in water at 341°C in 2.5 s without complete dissolution. Adding 0.8 wt % Na2CO3, complete dissolution of willow (concentration up to 35 vol %) was observed at 329,367°C and water densities of 322,787 kg/m3 (14,106 MPa) in 1.5 s. By cooling the solublized willow immediately, micron particles were obtained via precipitation. If heated further to 400°C, willow was completely hydrolyzed to sugars/sugar oligomers in 14.6 s at homogeneous conditions. A flow reactor was proposed to completely solubilize willow for the production of micron particles, sugars, bio-fuels and chemicals continuously. © 2008 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2008 [source] Botulinum Toxin Type B for Dynamic Glabellar Rhytides Refractory to Botulinum Toxin Type ADERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 5 2003Tina S. Alster MD Background. Botulinum toxin type B (BTX-B; Myobloc) has recently been introduced for the treatment of dynamic rhytides. This serotype is structurally similar to botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A; Botox) and appears to produce equivalent muscular paralysis. Because of the fact that some patients may become resistant to the effects of BTX-A with its continued use or may require large doses of type A to exert adequate muscular paralysis, the use of BTX-B may prove beneficial in these cases. Objective. To determine the effect of BTX-B on glabellar rhytides refractory or showing decreased clinical effect to treatment with BTX-A. Methods. Twenty females (mean age, 43 years) with vertical glabellar rhytides showing decreased or negligible clinical effect to BTX-A were treated with intramuscular injections of BTX-B. Five standardized intramuscular sites (procerus, inferomedial corrugator muscles, superior middle corrugator muscles) received a total dose of 2,500 U. Patients were evaluated at pretreatment and 48 to 72 hours, 1 week, and 2 and 4 months after injection. Results. All glabellar rhytides improved after treatment with BTX-B injections. Peak clinical effect was noted 1 month after treatment, with 50% of peak effect evident at the 2-month follow-up. Near complete dissolution of effect was seen at 4 months after treatment. Side effects were transient and were limited to moderate injectional pain and rare bruising and frontal brow tightness. Conclusions. BTX-B is an effective treatment modality for glabellar rhytides refractory or exhibiting decreased clinical effect to BTX-A. The duration of effect using the 2,500 U dosing schedule described herein was shorter than that typically achieved after equivalent BTX-A injection. Sequential extraction was used to separate polymers into colloidal (CL), colloidal extracellular polymeric substances (cEPS), hot water soluble (HW), hot bicarbonate soluble (HB), and hot alkali (HA) soluble fractions. Media-soluble polymers (CL and cEPS) were enriched in 4-linked mannosyl, glucosyl, and galactosyl residues as well as terminal and 3-linked xylosyl residues, whereas HW polymers consisted mainly of 3-linked glucosyl as well as terminal and 2,4-linked glucuronosyl residues. The HB fraction was enriched in terminal and 2-linked rhamnosyl residues derived from the mucilage coating solubilized by this treatment. Hot alkali treatment resulted in the complete dissolution of the frustule releasing 2,3- and 3-linked mannosyl residues. The fusiform morphotype predominated in standard and P-limited cultures and cultures subjected to salinity variations, but growth on solid media resulted in an enrichment of the oval morphotype. The proportion and linkages of 15 residues, including neutral, uronic acid, and O -methylated sugars, varied with environmental conditions. P limitation and salinity changes resulted in 1.5- to 2.5,fold increase in carbohydrate production, with enrichment of highly branched/substituted and terminal rhamnose, xylose, and fucose as well as O -methylated sugars, uronic acids, and sulfate. The increased deoxy- and O -methylated sugar content under unfavorable environments enhances the hydrophobicity of the polymers, whereas the anionic components may play important roles in ionic cross-linking, suggesting that these changes could ameliorate the effects of salinity or P-stress and that these altered polysaccharide characteristics may be useful as bioindicators for environmental stress. Balter It has been repeatedly shown that palaeoecological inferences from the elemental and isotopic content of carbonate hydroxylapatite of fossil teeth and bones are unrecoverable without removing diagenetic overprinting by chemical pretreatments. Such pretreatments may in turn cause modification of the biogenic signature. In this paper, we focus upon optimal removal of Ca,bearing carbonates (mainly calcite). In order to control the progress with time of calcite dissolution, we perform leaching under vacuum, and we monitor the evolution of the pH, pCO2, ,13C of released CO2, %C, ,13C and ,18O of the remaining mineral. For a set of different Quaternary bones and teeth, mass and isotopic balances indicate that 1 hour at most is necessary for complete dissolution of calcite with an optimal conservation of carbonate hydroxylapatite. Long,lasting experiments lead to a fractionation of hydroxylapatite 18O/16O carbonates. [source] Prolonged low-dose thrombolytic therapy: A novel adjunctive strategy in the management of an infected right atrial thrombusCLINICAL CARDIOLOGY, Issue 7 2002Sheila Chuang M.D. Abstract An 81-year-old man presented with a large, infected right atrial thrombus that was refractory to anticoagulants and several courses of antibiotics. The risk of surgical removal of the thrombus, which was associated with a pacemaker electrode, was considered prohibitive. The patient was treated for 7 days with low-dose (40 mg/day) tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA). Hemostatic monitoring during infusion revealed (1) aplasma t-PA antigen that was approximately 5% of that achieved during short-course t-PA for acute myocardial infarction, (2) biochemical evidence of prolonged clot lysis, and (3) no significant depletion of fibrinogen or plas-minogen. Nearly complete dissolution of the thrombus was observed. His bacteremia was eradicated by intravenous penicillin despite the presence of the pacemaker lead. This case highlights the benefits of combined antibiotic and thrombolytic therapy and documents for the first time the response of the human hemostatic system to prolonged t-PA infusion and the plasma t-PA levels attained when thrombolytic therapy is administered in this manner. Prolonged courses of fibrinolytic agents may be a good alternative to surgical intervention in selected patients with infected, right-sided intracardiac thrombi. [source] |
