[source] Synthesis and Characterization of Hypervalent Organoantimony(III) Compounds Containing the [2-(Me2NCH2)C6H4]2Sb FragmentEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 9 2009Laura M. Opris Abstract Compounds containing the [2-(Me2NCH2)C6H4]2Sb moiety were prepared by using R2SbX [X = Cl (1), Br (2)] as starting materials. The reaction of 1 with Me3SiCH2MgCl gave the mixed alkyl, aryl stibine R2SbCH2SiMe3 (3). Reduction of 2 with Mg in thf followed by in situ air oxidation or treatment with S8 resulted in the isolation of (R2Sb)2E [E = O (4), S (5)]. Compound 5 is also formed from R2SbCl and Na2S. The reaction of 4 with [W(CO)5(thf)] gives the unexpected complex [(R2SbOH)W(CO)5] (6). The new compounds were investigated by IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, as well as by mass spectrometry. The structures of 3,6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. For compounds 3,5, both nitrogen atoms from the pendant arms are involved in intramolecular N,Sb coordination, which results in distorted square-pyramidal (C,N)2SbC or (C,N)2SbE (E = O, S) cores. By contrast, in 6 only one nitrogen atom is strongly coordinated to the antimony center, whereas the second nitrogen atom is involved in N···H,O bonding. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Their structures were confirmed by means of elemental analysis, MS, 1H NMR, IR and X-ray crystallography. The results of preliminary biological tests showed that all of these compounds possess some antifungal and plant growth regulatory activities. [source] Synthesis of Dicarboxylate "C-Clamp" 1,2-Diethynylarene Compounds as Potential Transition-Metal Ion HostsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 1 2008Erwin Reisner Abstract We report an efficient convergent synthesis of a new type of C-clamp ligand with a 1,2-diethynylarene scaffold involving a chelate host capable of binding a guest molecule in its endo -dicarboxylate pocket. The chemistry involves a combination of palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira, Heck, and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. The compounds 2,3-bis[2-(2,-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)ethynyl]triptycene and 4,5-bis[2-(2,-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)ethynyl]veratrole and their 2,-carboxy- m -terphenyl-4-yl analogues were designed as dinucleating ligands to assemble carboxylate-bridged transition-metal complexes with a windmill geometry. The X-ray crystal structure of one such C-clamp compound containing co-crystallized water molecules reveals strong hydrogen bonds of the aqua guest to the endo -oriented carboxylic acid entities of the C-clamp host. In addition, two syn -N-donor ligands were prepared as a synthetic scaffold to mimic the geometric arrangement of N-donor atoms in carboxylate-bridged dinuclear proteins. During the in situ production, the layered silicates are dispersed in the monomer caprolactam before the polymerisation in a twin screw extruder, leading to an intercalation of the silicates. The production of a polyamide compound containing 0, 2 and 4 wt.-% nanoscale silicates was successful. An improvement of the elastic modulus of approximately 30,60% was reached. The figure shows the TEM micrograph of a nanocompound containing 2 wt.-% nanoclay at a magnification of 30,000×. [source] Thermally stable and high molecular weight poly(propylene carbonate)s from carbon dioxide and propylene oxide,POLYMER INTERNATIONAL, Issue 10 2002Q Zhu Abstract The copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide was carried out to afford alternating poly(propylene carbonate) in high yield. Thermal stable and high molecular weight copolymers were successfully obtained by optimizing the reaction conditions. The catalyst used was zinc glutarate supported on a perfluorinated compound containing 7,12 carbon atoms. Copolymerization parameters, such as the ratio of propylene oxide to catalyst, stirring strength and purity of propylene oxide, were studied. The alternating copolymer with a molecular weight of 56,100 in a very high yield (126,g polymer per gram of catalyst) was achieved, which is the highest yield ever reported. The thermal and mechanical properties of the alternating PPC copolymer were examined by the means of modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile test. MDSC and TGA results showed that the alternating PPC copolymer exhibits an extremely high glass transition temperature (maximum 46.46,°C) and decomposition temperature (255.8,°C) when compared to those values reported in literature. Tensile test revealed that thin film of alternating PPC copolymer exhibits superior mechanical strength. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Synthesis of new proton-ionizable crown ether compounds containing substituted lh-pyridin-4-one subcyclic unitsJOURNAL OF HETEROCYCLIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 6 2001Peter Huszthy Five novel pyridono-18-crown-6 (10-14) and two new benzyloxy-substituted pyridino-18-crown-6 (15 and 16) ligands have been prepared. By the catalytic hydrogenative removal of the benzyl group from the benzyloxy moiety at position 4 of the pyridine ring of 15 and 16, pyridono-18-crown-6 ethers 5 and 12 were obtained. These ligands were transformed to their 3,5-dibromo (10 and 13) and 3,5-dinitro derivatives (11 and 14) by treatment with bromine in methylene chloride and nitric acid in acetic anhydride, respectively. The latter proton-ionizable crown ethers have pKavalues of about 7.5 for 10 and 13 and 4.5 for 11 and 14. Thus, they are good candidates for complexation and proton-coupled transport of selected cations.
