Selected AbstractsHLA real-time extensionCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 15 2004Hui Zhao Abstract The IEEE 1516 Standard ,High Level Architecture (HLA)' and its implementation ,Run-Time Infra-structure (RTI)' defines a general-purpose network communication mechanism for Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). However, it does not address real-time requirements of DIS. Current operating system technologies can provide real-time processing through some real-time operating systems (RTOSs) and the Internet is also moving to an age of Quality of Service (QoS), providing delay and jitter bounded services. With the availability of RTOSs and IP QoS, it is possible for HLA to be extended to take advantage of these technologies in order to construct an architecture for Real-Time DIS (RT-DIS). This extension will be a critical aspect of applications in virtual medicine, distributed virtual environments, weapon simulation, aerospace simulation and others. This paper outlines the current real-time technology with respect to operating systems and at the network infrastructure level. After summarizing the requirements and our experiences with RT-DIS, we present a proposal for HLA real-time extension and architecture for real-time RTI. Similar to the growth of real-time CORBA (Common Object Request Broker) after the mature based CORBA standard suite, Real-Time HLA is a natural extension following the standardization of HLA into IEEE 1516 in September 2000. We identified two novel neuropeptides in the neuronal projections innervating the salivary glands of the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis (Say, 1821). Myoinhibitory peptide (MIP) and SIFamide immunoreactivities were colocalized in the protocerebral cells and their projections terminating on specific cells of salivary gland acini (types II and III). Immunoreactive substances were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) analysis: a 1,321.6-Da peptide with the sequence typical for MIP (ASDWNRLSGMWamide) and a 1,395.7-Da SIFamide (AYRKPPFNGSIFamide), which are highly conserved among arthropods. Genes encoding these peptides were identified in the available Ixodes genome and expressed sequence tag (EST) database. In addition, the cDNA encoding the MIP prepropeptide was isolated by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). In this report, we describe the anatomical structure of specific central neurons innervating salivary gland acini and identify different neuropeptides and their precursors expressed by these neurons. Our data provide evidence for neural control of salivary gland by MIP and SIFamide from the synganglion, thus lending a basis for functional studies of these two distinct classes of neuropeptides. J. [source] A social network service solution based on mobile subscriber contact-booksBELL LABS TECHNICAL JOURNAL, Issue 1 2010Xiang Feng Telecom carriers today are focused on finding ways to leverage their resources and capabilities to transform themselves into integrated service providers. Provisioning of social networking services is one of their considerations; however, the Web 2.0 social networking paradigm is not a good fit for carriers. This paper introduces a solution to address this need. The solution integrates the contacts list subscribers maintain within their cell phone contact-book with a subscriber profile maintained by the telecom carrier to provide a social network and social networking service built upon real world relationships rather than digital world relationships. It uses a built-in communication mechanism and subscriber-driven privacy management system to ensure subscriber privacy protection. It also provides an avenue for a new operator service model. In short, the solution lets carriers provide their customers with useful and reliable social networking services in a trusted and secure environment. © 2010 Alcatel-Lucent. [source] Design and implementation of a high-performance CCA event service,CONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 9 2009Ian Gorton Abstract Event services based on publish,subscribe architectures are well-established components of distributed computing applications. Recently, an event service has been proposed as part of the common component architecture (CCA) for high-performance computing (HPC) applications. In this paper we describe our implementation, experimental evaluation, and initial experience with a high-performance CCA event service that exploits efficient communications mechanisms commonly used on HPC platforms. We describe the CCA event service model and briefly discuss the possible implementation strategies of the model. We then present the design and implementation of the event service using the aggregate remote memory copy interface as an underlying communication layer for this mechanism. Two alternative implementations are presented and evaluated on a Cray XD-1 platform. The performance results demonstrate that event delivery latencies are low and that the event service is able to achieve high-throughput levels. Finally, we describe the use of the event service in an application for high-speed processing of data from a mass spectrometer and conclude by discussing some possible extensions to the event service for other HPC applications.
