CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS RESEARCH: A RESOURCE FOR COUPLE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 1 2004
    Susan S. Hendrick
This article describes the relatively new field of close relationships research, offering a representative list of topics studied by relationships reseachers. Some of the common interests shared by both close relationships reseachers and couple and family therapists are described, with theshared emphasis on relationships as an anchor for both fields. Some representative love theories are discussed, and Love Styles theory and research are presented in considerable detail. A clinicalcase example indicates how love styles research may be employed to advantage by couple therapists, and the utility of other close relationships theories and measures for therapy is briefly discussed. "I WANT MY MOMMIES": THE CRY FOR MINI-DOMAS TO RECOGNIZE THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILDREN OF SAME-SEX COUPLES*

FAMILY COURT REVIEW, Issue 2 2007
    Oren Goldhaber
In child custody cases, courts will look to the best interests of a child to maintain visitation/custody rights only with the child's biological parent, not third parties. However, with a same-sex couple, it is inevitable that one parent will not be the biological parent. Thus, when that parent is in a mini-DOMA state, where same-sex couples from non-mini-DOMA states do not have to be recognized, that parent will be viewed as a third party and lose all visitation/custody rights if the couple separates. This note advocates that mini-DOMAs allow both the biological and nonbiological parents of a same-sex couple to have visitation/custody rights of their children if it would be in the best interest of the children to do so. CHRONIC ILLNESS IN COUPLES: A CASE FOR EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 3 2003
    John Kowal
The onset of chronic illness is one of the most pervasive health problems facing North Americans today. Only recently have researchers and clinicans seriously examined chronic physical conditions in the context of close relationships. This article briefly reviews the literature on chronic illness in adult couples. Initially, the focus is on the reciprocal link between close relationships and chronic physical conditions. A number of clinical approaches for working with chronic illness in couples are outlined, a particular case is made for the utility of emotionally focused therapy, and a case study is presented. USING EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING TO ENHANCE TREATMENT OF COUPLES

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 2 2001
    Howard Protinsky
Eye Movement Desenitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as a clinical technique may enhance treatment effectiveness when applied within a couple therapy approach that is emotionally and experientially oriented. Clinical experience indicates that EMDR-based interventions are useful for accessing, activating, tolerating, and reprocessing the intense emotions that often fuel dysfunctional couple, interactions. Using EMDR within conjoint to reprocess negative emotions can amplify intimacy, increase connection, and subsequently lead to a change in problematic relationship patterns. [source]

GAY AND LESBIAN COUPLES IN THERAPY: PERSPECTIVES FOR THE CONTEMPORARY FAMILY THERAPIST

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 4 2000
    Claudia Bepko
This paper outlines the major concerns of gay and lesbian couples who seek therapy. Presenting problems are classified as either internal to the relationship or as external (contextual) ones that reflect the influence of oppressive cultural and gender biases. Throughout the article, distinctive therapy methods are described that address the unique concerns of lesbian and gay couples, with special sensitivity to heterosexist and homophobic bias. [source]

RELATIONSHIP STATISFACTION OF MEXICAN AMERICAN AND NON-HISPANIC WHITE AMERICAN INTERETHNIC COUPLES: ISSUES OF ACCULTURATION AND CLINICAL INTERVENTION

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 3 2000
    Charles Negy
Despite the increasing prevalence of interethnic marriages, remarkably little empirical literature exists for guiding clinical interventions offered to these couples. This study compared the marriages of 72 couples with one Mexican-American partner and one non-Hispanic White American partner, 75 Mexican-American couples, and 66 non-Hispanic White couples. Overall, the interethnic couples were more similar to non-Hispanic White couples than they were to Mexican-American couples across multiple domains, with the latter group indicating modestly higher levels of relationship distress. Among interethnic couples, Mexican-American wives' level of acculturation related significantly to both their own marital- and parental-role orientation and to distress in their relationships with children, as well as to their husbands' marital distress regarding child rearing and the couple's interactions regarding finances. Implications for clinical interventions with Mexican- and White-American interethnic couples are discussed. [source]

Redox Couple of DNA on Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Modified Electrode

    ELECTROANALYSIS, Issue 14 2009
    Hongxia Luo
Abstract It has been envisioned that carbon nanotubes could promote electron-transfer reactions when used as electrode materials in electrochemical cells. In the present study, calf thymus DNA was electrochemically oxidized at an electrode modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The potentials for DNA oxidation at pH,7.0 were found to be 0.71 and 0.81,V versus SCE, corresponding to the oxidation of guanine and adenine residues, respectively. An initial oxidation of adenine was observed in the first scan, which was followed by a quasi-reversible redox process of the oxidation product in the subsequent scans. [source]

Voltammetric Investigation of Zinc Release from Metallothioneins Modulated by the Glutathione Redox Couple and Separated with a Porous Membrane

    ELECTROANALYSIS, Issue 20 2008
    Lin Liu
Abstract Glutathione (GSH), in addition to serving as a redox buffer in cellular environment, has been suggested as a modulator in metal regulation and homeostasis by metallothioneins (MTs). The interactions of MTs with both GSH and its oxidized form GSSG have been shown to govern the direction of metal transfer. Common methods for the determination of zinc release from MTs modulated by GSH/GSSG either involve radioactive species or enzymes or are labor-intensive. In this study, upon separation of Zn2+ from the reaction mixture of MTs and GSH with a centrifugal filter membrane, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used for the Zn2+ quantification. The same approach is extended to the studies of metal transfer between Zn7MT with a GSH/GSSG mixture and that between Zn7MT with GSSG. The concomitant conversion between the free thiol and disulfide bonds was confirmed with UV-vis spectrophotometry. The results demonstrate that GSSG, GSH, and the GSH/GSSG mixture all modulate zinc release from Zn7MT. The percentage of zinc release increases in the order of GSH, GSSG, and the GSH/GSSG mixture. The new approach is demonstrated to be well suited for investigation of redox regulation of MT and its reaction with zinc-containing enzymes. [source]

Factorial and Construct Validity of the Revised Short Form Integrative Psychotherapy Alliance Scales for Family, Couple, and Individual Therapy

    FAMILY PROCESS, Issue 3 2008
    WILLIAM M. PINSOF PH.D
The Integrative Psychotherapy Alliance model brought an interpersonal and systemic perspective to bear on theory, research, and practice on the psychotherapeutic alliance. Questions have been raised about the independence of the theoretical factors in the model and their operationalization in the Individual, Couple, and Family Therapy Alliance Scales. This paper presents results of a confirmatory factor analysis of the scales that delineated at least three distinct interpersonal factors as well as shorter versions of the three scales to facilitate their use in research and practice. The paper also presents the results of a study testing each factor's association with client retention and progress over the first eight sessions in individual and couple therapy. At least two of the interpersonal factors were uniquely associated with progress in individual and couple functioning. Implications of the results for theory, research, practice, and training in individual, couple, and family therapy are elaborated. An Odd Couple with Promise: Researchers and Practitioners in Evaluation Settings,

    FAMILY RELATIONS, Issue 3 2000
    Judith A. Myers-Walls
Evaluation of programs for families continues to grow in importance. The best evaluation studies involve collaborations between evaluation researchers and practitioners, but the two groups represent different cultures. Cultural differences are seen in temporal orientation, cognitive resources, values and definitions of excellence, patterns of communication, daily life styles, and use of tools. The author provides eight suggested steps to improve collaboration through the determination of shared goals, clarification of boundaries, and improved communication. [source]

Non-Corrosive, Non-Absorbing Organic Redox Couple for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 19 2010
    Dongmei Li
Abstract A new colorless electrolyte containing an organic redox couple, tetramethylthiourea (TMTU) and its oxidized dimer tetramethylformaminium disulfide dication ([TMFDS]2+), is applied to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Advantages of this redox couple include its non-corrosive nature, low cost, and easy handling. More impressively, it operates well with carbon electrodes. The DSCs fabricated with a lab-made HCS-CB carbon counter-electrode can present up to 3.1% power conversion efficiency under AM 1.5 illumination of 100 mW·cm,2 and 4.5% under weaker light intensities. This result distinctly outperforms the identical DSCs with a Pt electrode. Corrosive experiments reveal that Al and stainless steel (SS) sheets are stable in the [TMFDS]2+/TMTU-based electrolyte. Its electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) is used to evaluate the influence of different counter-electrodes on the cell performance, and preliminary investigations reveal that carbon electrodes with large surface areas and ideal corrosion-inertness toward the sulfur-containing [TMFDS]2+/TMTU redox couple exhibit promise for application in iodine-free DSCs. Specific Processes and Scrambling in the Dehydrogenation of Ethane and the Degenerate Hydrogen Exchange in the Gas-Phase Ion Chemistry of the Ni(C,H3,O)+/C2H6 Couple

HELVETICA CHIMICA ACTA, Issue 5 2007
    Maria Schlangen
Abstract A mechanistically unprecedented situation characterizes the gas-phase ion chemistry of Ni(C,H3,O)+ when reacted under thermal, single-collision conditions with ethane. A dehydrogenation channel leading to Ni(C3,H7,O)+ is to 90% preceded by a complete loss of positional identity of all nine H-atoms of the encounter complex (,scrambling'), whereas ca. 10% of the reaction exhibit a selective CH bond activation of the alkane. In addition, a degenerate H exchange between ethane and the (C,H3,O) unit occurs as a side reaction, the mechanistic details of which remain unknown for the time being. [source]

The Role of the Oxygen/Water Redox Couple in Suppressing Electron Conduction in Field-Effect Transistors

    ADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 30 2009
    Carla M. Aguirre
The suppression of electron (n-type) conduction observed in back-gated field effect transistors is the result of an electrochemical charge transfer process to the oxygen/water layer adsorbed on hydrophilic substrates. The impact of this phenomenon is demonstrated with nanoscale and thin-film carbon nanotube transistors. [source]

Reflections of Two Trainees: Person-of-the-Therapist Training for Marriage and Family Therapists

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 4 2009
    Lauren Lutz
In this article we share our personal and professional experiences, struggles, and growth, as former trainees of the Person-of-the-Therapist Training pilot study, conducted during our master's coursework in the Couple and Family Therapy Department at Drexel University. We include our perceptions of the training process in vivo, the challenges and benefits of doing this work in an academic setting, case examples to convey our journey of personal discovery, and the use of what we learned about ourselves in our development as therapists. This development includes a deepening of awareness of self in our relationship and work with our clients, a greater ability to work with both our personal assets and vulnerabilities, as well as the acquisition of skills to actively and purposefully use our entire person diagnostically and therapeutically in our work with clients. Training the Person of the Therapist in an Academic Setting

JOURNAL OF MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY, Issue 4 2009
    Harry J. Aponte
Drexel University's Couple and Family Therapy Department recently introduced a formal course on training the person of a therapist. The course is based on Aponte's Person-of-the-Therapist Training Model that up until now has only been applied in private, nonacademic institutes with postgraduate therapists. The model attempts to put into practice a philosophy that views the full person of therapists, and their personal vulnerabilities in particular, as the central tool through which therapists do their work in the context of the client, therapist relationship. This article offers a description of how this model has been tested with a group of volunteer students, and subsequently what had to be considered to formally structure the training into the Drexel curriculum. Lack of Awareness of Partner STD Risk Among Heterosexual Couples

PERSPECTIVES ON SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, Issue 1 2010
    Susan S. Witte
CONTEXT: Individuals' accurate assessment of their exposure to the risk of HIV and other STDs requires awareness of their sexual partners' risk behaviors and disease status. METHODS: In a sample of 217 couples enrolled in a risk intervention trial in 1997,2002, both partners reported on their own risk behaviors and their perceptions of their partner's behavior; concordance of partners' reports was examined using kappa statistics. Individual and relationship characteristics predicting lack of awareness of a partner's risk behavior were explored using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Three percent of women and 14% of men were unaware that their partner had recently had a concurrent partner. Eleven percent and 12%, respectively, were unaware that their partner had ever injected drugs; 10% and 12% were unaware that their partner had recently received an STD diagnosis; and 2% and 4% were unaware that their partner was HIV-positive. Women's lack of awareness of partner risk was associated with increasing age (odds ratio, 1.1), being of a race or ethnicity other than black or Latina (15.8) and having a Latino partner (3.7); it was positively associated with a man's report that he was married (4.4) and with relationship satisfaction as reported by both the woman and her partner (1.2 for each). Among men, lack of awareness was positively associated with partner's age (1.1) and with having a partner who was formerly married (8.2). CONCLUSIONS: Couple-based interventions that assess each partner's awareness of the other's risk behavior may help programs better target couples' STD prevention needs. [source]

A Ferromagnetically Coupled, Bent, Trinuclear Copper(II) Complex: Synthesis, Structure, Hydrogen-Bonding Network, Magnetic Properties and DNA Interaction Study

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 17 2006
    Sumana Sarkar
Abstract A bent trinuclear copper(II) complex (1) incorporating ,-phenoxo, ,- syn - syn carboxylato, and ,3 -chloro bridges and an O,N,N -coordinated reduced Schiff-base ligand is reported. The complex shows an intramolecular ferromagnetic interaction in the solid state. The EPR spectra also support the magnetic behaviour of the complex. In the compound, each copper centre has a square-pyramidal geometry. The separation between the adjacent copper ions is about 3.05 Å and that between the terminal copper ions is about 5.0 Å. The complex forms a supramolecular architecture through N,H···Cl hydrogen bonding between the amine group of the reduced Schiff-base ligand and the counter chloride anions. Absorption and fluorescence spectral studies and viscosity measurements have been performed to determine the type of interaction with calf-thymus DNA. The nuclease activity of the complex with plasmid DNA is also studied. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006) [source]

Numerical simulation of thermal, hydraulic characteristics in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 5 2003
    Y.M. Ferng
Abstract The thermal, hydraulic characteristics of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) are numerically simulated by a simplified two-phase, multi-component flow model. This model consists of continuity, momentum, energy and concentration equations, and appropriate equations to consider the varying flow properties of the gas, liquid two-phase region in a PEMFC. This gas, liquid two-phase characteristic is not considered in most of the previous simulation works. The calculated thermal, hydraulic phenomena of a PEMFC are reasonably presented in this paper, which include the distributions of flow vector, temperature, oxygen concentration, liquid water saturation, and current density, etc. Coupled with the electrochemical reaction equations, current flow model can predict the cell voltage vs current density curves (i.e. performance curves), which are validated by the single-cell tests. The predicted performance curves for a PEMFC agree well with the experimental data. In addition, the positive effect of temperature on the cell performance is also precisely captured by this model. The model presented herein is essentially developed from the thermal, hydraulic point of view and can be considered as a stepping-stone towards a full complete PEMFC simulation model that can help the optima design for the PEMFC and the enhancement of cell efficiency. Roll-Bonded Titanium/Stainless-Steel Couples, Part 1: Diffusion and Interface-Layer Investigations

ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATERIALS, Issue 1-2 2009
    S. Dziallach
A survey of the diffusion of the alloying elements Fe, Ni and Cr in a roll-bonded titanium/stainless-steel couple after an application-orientated heat treatment is presented. Diffusion profiles of the investigated elements by means of EPMA, and the diffusion coefficients and activation energies for application-oriented short annealing times up to 12,min in a temperature range of 750 to 950,°C are determined. The transformation of the hcp , -titanium into bcc , -titanium has a significant influence on the diffusion of the elements. The forming interface layers are characterised by LOM and SEM pictures. The accessible mechanical properties of a roll-bonded titanium/stainless-steel couple, consisting of grade-1 titanium and a low-carbon Cr-Ni-Mo-steel (1.4404), after different heat treatments are described. The mechanical properties, determined by tensile and stretch-forming tests, facilitate the optimum process widow for the heat-treatment parameters after roll bonding. The results of stretch-forming tests to determine the forming limits of the composite are shown. These tests also give important indications of the failure mechanism of the composite. Deep-drawing tests allow a first estimation of the deep-drawing functional area for a subsequent forming process to be made. [source]

Precautionary Savings Behavior of Maritally Stressed Couples

FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES RESEARCH JOURNAL, Issue 3 2006
    Michael S. Finke
According to precautionary savings theory, households tend to save more when future income is less certain. Divorce often results in reduced levels of household income and individual consumption comparable to other potential income shocks. Households that will divorce or separate in 5 years are identified from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (1994,1999) to determine whether these households maintain greater wealth holdings in anticipation of divorce. When spouses earn comparable incomes, divorce-prone households have significantly higher wealth levels (p < .01) than households that remain married. When there is a higher-earning spouse, households have significantly lower wealth levels (p < .01) than households that remain married. Results suggest that spouses with comparable earnings treat divorce as a wealth shock, whereas higher-earning spouses rationally dissave when divorce is imminent. Equitable wealth allocation for lower-earning spouses may require a more detailed investigation of predivorce wealth changes. [source]

Couples with Schizophrenia "Becoming like Others" in South Korea: Marriage as Part of a Recovery Process

    FAMILY PROCESS, Issue 3 2009
    MYUNG-YEE YU PH.D.
Very little is known about the married life of couples with schizophrenia. In this paper, authors report perceptions and experiences of 5 married couples with schizophrenia on their strategies in forming and maintaining healthy marriage. Our data reveal that participants had realistic expectations of marriage, and recognized benefits as well as obstacles in their marriages with respect to their recovery. This paper examines the importance of extended family members, mental health professionals, and the larger society's attitudes toward marriage as a factor in the recovery process for persons with schizophrenia. The authors identify implications for mental health professionals regarding the respect of client dignity and the applicability of a strengths perspective when working with couples with schizophrenia. The authors argue that mental health professionals' decisions regarding the balance between respecting a client's self-determination and protecting a client from risks associated with cohabitation and marriage should no longer be a dilemma for those working with people with mental illness.
