Summary A wide-ranging study based on compositional and isotopic analyses of minerals and manufactured objects from the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula and their respective archaeological and cultural contexts demonstrates significant lead mineral exploitation in the El Priorat area (Tarragona province) linked to Phoenician trade (seventh,sixth centuries BC). This exploitation continued, despite losing intensity, until the Romanization of the territory. Our project also aims to determine the nature and origin of the lead and silver supply in the northern Iberian territory surrounding the Phocaean enclave of Emporion, especially with regard to the demands of the colonial mint. The behaviour pattern of the circulation of lead, silver and copper in Catalonia in the period studied indicates a plurality of contemporary supply sources, although, at least from the fifth century BC onward, minerals and metals from the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula take on considerable importance. In this paper we present a version of the search theoretical model of money that captures two phenomena that have characterized several episodes of monetary history: currency shortages and the circulation of privately issued notes. As usual in these models, the media of exchange are determined as part of the equilibrium. We characterize all the different equilibria and specify the conditions under which there is a currency shortage and/or privately issued notes are used as means of payment. There always exists an equilibrium in which notes circulate, either alone or together with coins and, hence, credit is a self-fulfilling phenomenon. [source]

Circulation in normal and inflamed dental pulp

In the pulp, arteries branch into a capillary network before they leave the pulp as venules through the apical foramina. The tissue has low compliance, as it is enclosed in dentin, and has a relatively high blood flow and blood volume. The interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) and colloid osmotic pressure are relatively high whereas the net driving blood pressure is low. The high pulsatile IFP is probably the major force for propelling lymph in the dental pulp. Vasodilation in neighboring tissue as well as arteriovenous (AV) shunts in the pulp itself can contribute to a fall in total and coronal pulpal blood flow, respectively. The pulp blood flow is under nervous, humoral, and local control. Inflammatory vascular responses, vasodilation, and increased vessel permeability induce an increase in IFP that can be followed by a temporarily impaired blood flow response. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from bacteria may cause endothelial activation in the pulp, leading to vasoconstriction and reduced vascular perfusion. Lymphatic vessels are identified with specific lymphatic markers in the pulp but so far, little is known about their function. Because of the special circulatory conditions in the pulp, there are several clinical implications that need to be considered in dental treatment. Received 13 February 2009; accepted 28 August 2009. Interannual variability of the Tropical Atlantic independent of and associated with ENSO: Part II.

Abstract Two dominant ocean,atmosphere modes of variability on interannual timescales were defined in part I of this work, namely, the North Tropical Atlantic (NTA) and South Tropical Atlantic (STA) modes. In this paper we focus on the STA mode that covers the equatorial and sub-tropical South Atlantic. We show that STA events occurring in conjunction with ENSO have a preference for the southern summer season and seem to be forced by an atmospheric wave train emanating from the central tropical Pacific and travelling via South America, in addition to the more direct ENSO-induced change in the Walker Circulation. They are lagged by one season from the peak of ENSO. These events show little evidence for other-than-localised coupled ocean,atmosphere interaction. In contrast, STA events occurring in the absence of ENSO favour the southern winter season. They appear to be triggered by a Southern Hemisphere wave train emanating from the Pacific sector, and then exhibit features of a self-sustaining climate mode in the tropical Atlantic. The southward shift of the inter tropical convergence zone that occurs during the warm phase of such an event triggers an extra tropical wave train that propagates downstream in the Southern Hemisphere. This article is a contribution to the theorization of global maritime circulation as a key category of a global biopolitics of security. It seeks to advance knowledge on the ways in which liberal life is promoted and protected by exacerbating global circulation. It focuses on the security effects of a complex maritime insurance apparatus driven by global insurance in which the Joint War Committee of the Lloyd's Market Association and the International Underwriting Association plays a pivotal role. Through the analysis of the inclusion of the Strait of Malacca in the Lloyd' War List in 2006 under the argument of heightened piracy, it is argued that global maritime insurance performs a special security role, that of stewardship, in securing the circulation of the high seas. Constraints on the glacial operation of the atlantic ocean's conveyor circulation

Circulation in the Atlantic Ocean is currently dominated by a northward flow of upper waters balanced by a return flow of deep water (i.e., the conveyor). Paleoproxies tell us that, unlike today, during the glacial age the deep Atlantic was stratified. Rather than being flooded with one nearly homogeneous water mass, there were two distinctly different ones. In this paper, the paleoproxy results are analyzed in an attempt to constrain the sources and ventilation rate of the deeper of these two glacial Atlantic water masses. Taken together, the cadmium and carbon isotope measurements on benthic foraminifera and the radiocarbon measurements on coexisting benthic and planktonic foraminifera appear to require a conveyor-like circulation no weaker than half of today's. This conclusion is at odds with geostrophic reconstructions. This seeming disagreement could be eliminated if, as suggested by Keigwin and Schlegel, the radiocarbon measurements by Broecker et al. significantly underestimate the difference between the 14C to C ratio for glacialage surface water and deep water in the equatorial Atlantic. Precautionary Balances and the Velocity of Circulation of Money

E41; E52 The low velocity of circulation of money implies that households hold more money than they normally spend. This behavior is explained if households face uncertain expenditure needs, so that they have a precautionary motive for holding money. We investigate this motive in a search model where households are subject to preference shocks. The model predicts that velocity is not only low but also interest elastic. The model closely fits U.S. data on velocity and interest rates (1892,2004). The empirical analysis reveals a dramatic reduction in precautionary balances toward the end of our sample, which is important for policy issues. [source]

The entrapment of corrosion products from CoCr implant alloys in the deposits of calcium phosphate: A comparison of serum, synovial fluid, albumin, EDTA, and water

Abstract Physical wear of orthopedic implants is inevitable. CoCr alloy samples, typically used in joint reconstruction, corrode rapidly after removal of the protective oxide layer. The behavior of CoCr pellets immersed in human serum, foetal bovine serum (FBS), synovial fluid, albumin in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), EDTA in PBS, and water were studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS). The difference in the corrosive nature of human serum, water, albumin in PBS and synovial fluid after 5 days of immersion was highlighted by the oxide layer, which was respectively 15, 3.5, 1.5, and 1.5 nm thick. The thickness of an additional calcium phosphate deposit from human serum and synovial fluid was 40 and 2 nm, respectively. Co and Cr ions migrated from the bulk metal surface and were trapped in this deposit by the phosphate anion. This may account for the composition of wear debris from CoCr orthopedic implants, which is known to consist predominantly of hydroxy-phosphate compounds. Known components of synovial fluid including proteoglycans, pyrophosphates, phospholipids, lubricin, and superficial zone protein (SZP), have been identified as possible causes for the lack of significant calcium phosphate deposition in this environment. Circulation of Books in the Medieval Franciscan Order: Attitude, Methods, and Critics

One of the significant advantages that the Franciscan friars had over their secular colleagues in the medieval intellectual domain was easy access to books. Not only did the order establish well-endowed libraries, but also facilitated the circulation of books among the friars who were involved in preaching and studying. The notes on Franciscan manuscripts indicating a loan or a borrower, the library inventories, together with the constitutional evidence reveal some interesting practices in this respect. Although it was the nature of scholastic teaching that necessitated private use, and hence the assignment of books, the practice nevertheless remained unpopular with the faction in the order known as the Spirituals. They saw it as the cause of the multiplication of books, thereby a serious breach in the order's creed of evangelical poverty. The circulation of books nevertheless continued with increasing momentum and was one of the issues responsible for the schism in the order. [source]

Induction of purple sulfur bacterial growth in dairy wastewater lagoons by circulation

Abstract Aims:, To determine whether circulation of dairy wastewater induces the growth of phototrophic purple sulfur bacteria (PSB). Methods and Results:, Two dairy wastewater lagoons that were similar in size, geographic location, number and type of cattle loading the lagoons were chosen. The only obvious visual difference between them was that one was stagnant and the water was brown in colour (Farm 1), and the other was circulated and the water was red in colour because of the presence of PSB that contained carotenoid pigments (Farm 2). Both wastewaters were sampled monthly for 3 months and assayed for PSB and extractable carotenoid pigments (ECP). After this point, circulators were placed in the wastewater lagoon on Farm 1, and samples were taken monthly for 9 months and assayed for PSB and ECP. Before the installation of circulators, no PSB-like 16S rRNA sequences or ECP were observed in the wastewater from Farm 1; however, both were observed in the wastewater from Farm 2. After the installation of circulators, statistically greater levels of PSB and extractable carotenoid pigments were observed in the wastewater from Farm 1. Conclusions:, Circulation enhances the growth of PSB in dairy wastewater. Significance and Impact of this Study:, Because PSB utilize H2S and volatile organic acids (VOA) as an electron source for photosynthesis, and VOA and alcohols as a carbon source for growth, the increase in these bacteria should reduce H2S, volatile organic compounds and alcohol emissions from the lagoons, enhancing the air quality in dairy farming areas. Penile replantation, complication management, and technique refinement

We describe a case of complete guillotine-type penile amputation at the proximal penile shaft. The blood flow was established 10 h after trauma. Circulation in the replanted penis was quite good but there was progressive prepuce necrosis after the hematoma. Cosmetic and urinary outcome was good 6 weeks later. The repair of deep dorsal penile vessels helps in corpus tissue healing and glans circulation. The blood supply from the corpus tissue is sufficient for the survival of the replanted penis even when the repaired dorsal vessels were occluded. Patients want to stop ,Z' drugs more than benzos A study from Lincolnshire has revealed that patients prescribed a ,Z' drug - zaleplon (Sonata), zolpidem or zopiclone - for insomnia are more likely to want to stop treatment than those prescribed a benzodiazepine (Br J Gen Pract 2008;58:417-22). The cross-sectional survey of 705 patients prescribed a hypnotic for insomnia found that more patients taking a Z drug wanted to stop (23 vs 12 per cent prescribed a benzodiazepine) and tried to stop treatment (52 vs 41 per cent). New NICE guidance NICE has published an updated clinical guideline for the management of type 2 diabetes, covering: the control of blood glucose with lifestyle modification, oral hypoglycaemic drugs and insulin; reducing blood pressure and lipids, antithrombotic therapy and estimating cardiovascular risk; and screening and treatment for long-term complications. There is also a new clinical guideline on cardiovascular risk assessment and the modification of blood lipids for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. New technology appraisals include the use of erythropoietin analogues for cancer-associated anaemia, and adalimumab (Humira) and etanercept (Enbrel) for ankylosing spondylitis; infliximab (Remicade) is not recommended. Prescriber consultant editor wins award Professor Tony Avery, professor of primary care at Nottingham University and consultant editor for Prescriber, has won the John Fry Award for his work in promoting the discipline of general practice through research and publishing as a practising GP. The citation acknowledges Professor Avery as ,quite simply one of the best researchers we have had in general practice,' describing his output of original work and research as impressive. The award commemorates the work of the late Dr John Fry, perhaps the most prominent GP of his generation involved in research. Antihypertensive dose ignores adherence Clinicians take no account of poor adherence when they increase the dose of antihypertensive therapy due to apparent lack of effect, US researchers say (Circulation 2008; published online May 27; doi 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.107.724104). Their retrospective analysis included reimbursement records for 38 327 patients with hypertension who presented with elevated BP (140-200/>90mmHg) in one year (mean 1.8 events per patient). After adjusting for potential confounders, they found that antihypertensive medications were added or the dose of medication increased in about one-third of patients regardless of the degree of nonadherence in the previous year. LABAs improve COPD Inhaled long-acting beta2-agonists (LABAs) improve COPD and do not increase the risk of death, a new safety review has concluded (Chest 2008;133:1079-87). The meta-analysis of 27 RCTs in patients with moderate to severe stable COPD found that LABAs reduced exacerbations by 22 per cent, improved lung function, reduced use of rescue medication and improved quality of life. There was no effect on respiratory deaths, though a combination of a LABA with an inhaled steroid reduced the risk by two-thirds compared with LABA monotherapy. Tiotropium (Spiriva) was associated with a 50 per cent lower risk of exacerbations than LABAs. These findings follow the MHRA's review of LABAs in the treatment of asthma, which found no increase in mortality provided they are used with an inhaled steroid (Drug Safety Update 2008;1:9). Naproxen as effective in acute gouty arthritis Naproxen is as effective as prednisolone in the treatment of acute gouty arthritis, say researchers from The Netherlands (Lancet 2008;371:1854-60). Their study in 118 primary care patients showed that five days' treatment with naproxen 500mg twice daily or prednisolone 35mg daily reduced pain scores to a similar extent with a comparable incidence of adverse effects.
