Urinary incontinence among institutionalized oldest old Chinese men in Taiwan,

NEUROUROLOGY AND URODYNAMICS, Issue 4 2009
Yi-Ming Chen
Abstract Aims To explore prevalence and related factors for urinary incontinence (UI) among the oldest old institutionalized Chinese men in Taiwan. Methods All residents living in Banciao Veterans Care Home were invited for study. UI was defined as urinary leakage at least once weekly. Additional data items from the Minimum Data Set (MDS Nursing Home Chinese Version 2.1) were used to explore impact associated with physical function, cognitive status and quality of life (social engagement, SocE). Depressive symptoms were screened by the Short Form Geriatric Depression Scale. Results Data from 594 male residents (mean age: 80.9,±,5.3 years) were analyzed. Among all study subjects, 92.8% were functionally independent, 20.4% had certain cognitive impairment and 8.2% had depressive symptoms. The prevalence of UI in the Banciao Veterans Care Home was 10.1%. Compared with residents without UI, subjects with UI had poorer physical function, cognitive status, and more depressive symptoms. The mean SocE score was 1.5,±,1.3, and was similar between UI (+) and UI (,) subjects (1.4,±,1.2 vs. 1.6,±,1.3, P,=,0.411). By multivariate logistic regression, poorer physical functional status, cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms were independent risk factors for UI (P,<,0.05). Conclusions Poorer physical function, poorer cognitive status and depressive symptoms were all statistically significant independent risk factors for UI. However, SocE score (proxy indicator of quality of life) did not differ between subjects with and without UI. Further investigations are needed to evaluate the impact of UI on quality of life among oldest old institutionalized Chinese men in Taiwan. Neurourol. Quality of life of patients with ovarian cancer in Taiwan: validation and application of the Taiwan Chinese version of the EORTC QLQ-OV28

PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY, Issue 7 2010
Wei-Chu Chie
Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Taiwan Chinese Version of the EORTC QLQ-OV28. Methods: The authors translated the questionnaire according to the guideline of the EORTC. A total of 96 patients with ovarian cancer in National Taiwan University Hospital were interviewed with the questionnaire and the EORTC QLQ-C30 between September 2004 and September 2007. Answer distribution and psychometric properties of the EORTC QLQ-OV28 were examined. Results: The mean age of the patients was 54 (standard deviation 12 years). Most of the patients were in FIGO stages III or IV. Two thirds were on-treatment (chemotherapy). Items for gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, menopausal symptoms, and sexuality showed more flooring effects than others. Missing values were frequent in further questions about sexual activity. After excluding conditional questions, the Cronbach's alpha coefficients of most scales were satisfactory (0.74,0.89), except other chemotherapy side effects (0.63) and menopausal symptoms (0.39). The item-to-own and item-to-other scales correlation showed satisfactory results. Patients who were on-treatment had significantly poorer quality of life (QoL) scores in most symptom scales. Conclusions: The EORTC QLQ-OV28 is a valid instrument to assess QoL issues of patients with ovarian cancer in Taiwan, a country of a different culture. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 5-HT2A T102C receptor polymorphism and neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY, Issue 6 2004
Linda Chiu Wa Lam
Abstract Objective To investigate the association between 5-HT2A receptor polymorphism and neuropsychiatric (NP) symptoms in Chinese elderly with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods This case-control study evaluated Chinese subjects with AD first presented to an university affiliated psychogeriatric clinic. Eighty-seven subjects with NINCDS-ADRDA diagnosis for probable and possible AD were recruited consecutively from the psychogeriatric clinics of the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong. 5-HT2A receptor polymorphisms were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), enzyme digestion and gel electrophoresis. NP symptoms were assessed by the Chinese version of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Results The genotype frequencies were significantly different in subjects with regards to the presentation of delusions, aggression, aberrant motor behavior and apathy (Pearson Chi Squares, p,<,0.05). If only homozygote states were included, there were significantly fewer subjects of CC genotype with delusion (Pearson chi square, p,<,0.05). Conclusions Specific NP symptoms in AD were significantly associated with 5-HT2A receptor polymorphisms. Possible ethnic differences in the behavioral expression of 5-HT2A receptor polymorphisms are worthy of further exploration. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Behavioral profile of Alzheimer's disease in Chinese elderly , a validation study of the Chinese version of the Alzheimer's disease behavioral pathology rating scale

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY, Issue 4 2001
Linda C. W. Lam
Abstract Objectives This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Alzheimer's disease behavioral pathology rating scale (CBehave-AD) and the behavioral profile of Chinese patients with AD. Methods Seventy-one subjects with NINCDS-ADRDA diagnosis of probable and possible AD were assessed for validation of the CBehave-AD. A behavioral symptom frequency checklist, the Chinese version of the Blessed Roth dementia scale (CDS) and the Cantonese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE) were used for comparison. An extended sample of 120 AD patients was then evaluated with the CBehave-AD. Results High correlations between the CBehave-AD and checklist scores were found (paranoid and delusional ideation, hallucinations, activity disturbances, aggressiveness and diurnal rhythm disturbances). The scale also demonstrated satisfactory inter-rater and test-retest reliabilities. The mean (SD) CMMSE score of the 120 patients was 9.4 (7.1). Among them, 32% have delusions, 15% had hallucinations, 54% had activity disturbances, 61% had aggressive behavior, 44% had sleep disturbance, 24% had affective disturbances, 19% had anxiety and phobias. Delusional ideation was significantly associated with hallucinations, aggressiveness, and affective disturbances. Diurnal rhythm disturbances were associated with activity disturbances and aggressiveness. CBehave-AD total scores were not significantly correlated with severity of AD, but individual symptom categories showed different pattern of correlation. Delusions, hallucinations, anxiety and phobias were significantly correlated with dementia staging. Conclusion The findings suggest that the CBehave-AD is a valid assessment tool for behavioral disturbances in patients with AD. Variable associations between different symptom categories and dementia staging suggest a need for further exploration of the complex interactions between behavioral and cognitive disturbances in dementia. Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham, version IV scale , parent form

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF METHODS IN PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH, Issue 1 2008
Susan Shur-Fen Gau
Abstract This study aimed to establish the psychometric properties of parent ratings on the Chinese version of the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham IV scale (SNAP-IV) in a school-based sample of 3534 students in grades 1 to 8 from two cities and two suburbs in Taiwan and 189 children diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (aged 6 to 15) consecutively recruited from a medical center in Taipei. Parents completed the Chinese versions of the SNAP-IV, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and Child Behavior Checklist. The Chinese SNAP-IV demonstrated similar three factor structure (Inattention, Hyperactivity/Impulsivity, and Oppositional) as its English version, and satisfactory test, retest reliability (intraclass correlation = 0.59,0.72), internal consistency (alpha = 0.88,0.90), concurrent validity (Pearson correlations = 0.56,0.72), and discriminant validity. Boys scored higher than girls across the eight school grade levels. The SNAP-IV clearly distinguished children with ADHD from school-based participants. Comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder predicted higher SNAP-IV scores among children with ADHD. Our findings suggest that the Chinese SNAP-IV is a reliable and valid instrument for rating ADHD-related symptoms in both clinical and community settings in Taiwan. Translation and validation of a Chinese language version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS)

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY, Issue 6 2009
GILLIAN H. M. LEE
Objective., This study aimed to adapt the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) for pre-school children in a Chinese speaking community and to investigate its psychometric properties (validity and reliability). Methods., A Chinese language version of the ECOHIS was derived through a forward, backward translation and tested for face and content validity among a focus group. A convenient sample of pre-school children (n = 111) was recruited (including a sub-sample with early childhood caries and caries-free children). Parents of the children self-completed the derived Chinese-ECOHIS measure. Validity of the measure was assessed by investigating the relationship between dental caries status and Chinese-ECOHIS scores (construct and criterion validity). A sub-sample of the parents repeated the ratings of the measure to enable reliability assessments. Both internal and test, retest reliability were determined. Results., A Chinese version of ECOHIS was derived with minor modification to the original version. Chinese-ECOHIS scores were associated with children's caries experience (dmft) (r = 0.66, P < 0.05) supporting convergent validity. In addition, variations in ECOHIS scores were apparent with respect to caries and caries-free groups (P < 0.001), supporting the ability to distinguish between patient groups. Cronbach's alpha values (internal reliability) for total ECOHIS score were 0.91 and intraclass correlation coefficient value (test, retest reliability) was 0.64. Conclusions., A Chinese version of the ECOHIS was developed and demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. These findings can enable assessments of pre-school child oral health-related quality of life in Chinese speaking communities. [source]

Learning organization in mainland China: empirical research on its application to Chinese state-owned enterprises

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT, Issue 4 2004
De Zhang
This paper examines the applicability of the learning organization concept and its measurement in a Chinese context. Based on the theoretical framework proposed by Watkins and Marsick (1993, 1996, 1997), this paper identifies the differences in seven of the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) between traditional state-owned enterprises (SOEs) versus independent listed companies and companies in service versus manufacturing industries in China. Results indicate that the Chinese version of the DLOQ demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties. Service companies exhibit better learning practices than manufacturing companies; however, the independently listed companies failed to show better learning practices than their unlisted counterparts. Implications for practice and future research are discussed. [source]

Insomnia Severity Index: psychometric properties with Chinese community-dwelling older people

JOURNAL OF ADVANCED NURSING, Issue 10 2010
Doris S.F. Yu
yu d.s.f. (2010) Insomnia Severity Index: psychometric properties with Chinese community-dwelling older people. Journal of Advanced Nursing,66(10), 2350,2359. Abstract Aim., This paper is a report of a study to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index. Background., Despite the high prevalence of insomnia in older people and its detrimental impact on well-being and healthcare costs, this problem is almost always undetected and consequently under-treated. The Insomnia Severity Index is psychometrically sound in measuring perceived insomnia severity. However, it has had very limited application in non-White populations. Methods., An instrument validation study was carried out between October 2008 and April 2009. The Insomnia Severity Index was translated into Chinese using Brislin's model and administered to a convenience sample of 585 older Chinese people recruited from three community centres for elders. Other instruments were also administered, including the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Results., Cronbach's alpha of the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index was 0·81, with item-to-total correlations in the range of 0·34,0·67. Construct validity was supported by its moderate relationship with the Chinese Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and sleep efficiency. The Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index also indicated more severe level of insomnia in older people who reported depressed mood on the Geriatric Depression Scale. Discriminant validity was supported as the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index could discriminate poorer sleepers from normal sleepers. Exploratory factor analysis identified a two-factor structure for the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index in measuring the severity and impacts of insomnia on the Chinese older people. Conclusion., The Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index is a culturally-relevant and psychometrically-sound instrument for assessing severity and impact of insomnia in Chinese community-dwelling older people. Nurses can use this tool to assess older people's perceptions of insomnia. [source]

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 19-20 2010
Hsin Chu
Aim and objectives., The aim of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale (C-BSDS) in a Chinese population to serve as an aid to clinical diagnosis of bipolar disorders. Background., Bipolar spectrum disorders are often misdiagnosed because of the wide range of symptoms seen in patients. The consequences of delayed diagnoses or misdiagnoses can be devastating. Design., A cross-sectional research design. Method., Two hundred patients with affective disorders from a psychiatric outpatient clinic in Taiwan were enrolled. Internal consistency reliability and two-week test, retest reliability were performed to evaluate the reliability of the C-BSDS. Expert content validity and factor analysis were used for testing construct validity. To evaluate sensitivity and specificity, the Chinese version of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) was used as the gold standard for diagnosis. Results., The internal consistency coefficient measured by intra-class correlation (ICC) was 0·81, the test, retest reliability coefficient was 0·85 and the expert validity was 0·85. For construct validity, ,irritable and hyper-energetic factors' and ,depressed and lack of energy factors' were extracted by factor analysis. These two factors reflected the structure of the original scale and accounted for 33·27% of the variance. The optimal cut-off was 12, which yielded a sensitivity of 74 and a specificity of 0·97 for detecting bipolar disorder and for bipolar II disorder these were 0·79 and 0·68, respectively. Conclusions., The C-BSDS showed good reliability and validity, and the results were consistent with the English version of the BSDS. Therefore, the C-BSDS is an effective tool for evaluation of a Chinese population. Relevance to clinical practice., The BSDS can further increase the detection rate of bipolar disorders, especially bipolar II disorder, with satisfactory sensitivity and specificity. It can effectively assist with clinical screening of patients for bipolar spectrum disorders. [source]

Assessing health-related quality of life in patients with inflammatory bowel disease in Zhejiang, China

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 1-2 2010
Yunxian Zhou
Aims., The aim of this study was to assess health-related quality of life in patients with inflammatory bowel disease in Zhejiang, Mainland China. Background., The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in China is believed to be low but has been increasing in the past decade. The quality of life of Chinese patients with inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Design., A cross-sectional study. Methods., The study was conducted in 92 patients with inflammatory bowel disease in Zhejiang, China, 52 with ulcerative colitis and 40 with Crohn's disease. Health-related quality of life was measured by the Chinese version of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire and Short Form-36, respectively. Disease activity was assessed by the Walmsley and Harvey,Bradshaw simple indices for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, respectively. Demographic and clinical variables were also recorded. Short Form-36 data from the study sample were compared with a reference population of 1688 Chinese people residing in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Results., No significant health-related quality of life differences were found between patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease (p > 0·05). Pooled data showed that inflammatory bowel disease patients with active disease had significantly lower scores for all eight dimensions of Short Form-36 compared to those in remission (p < 0·01); those with active disease scored significantly lower than population norms in all dimensions of Short Form-36 except mental health (p < 0·05); whereas those in remission scored significantly lower than population norms in role physical (p < 0·01) and general health dimensions (p < 0·05). The regression analyses identified only disease activity index and employment status to explain variations in health-related quality of life (p < 0·01). Conclusions., Inflammatory bowel disease similarly impairs health-related quality of life in patients with both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Relevance to clinical practice., The results suggest that any interventions that produce a stable clinical remission, whether medical or surgical, allowing patients to return to their usual work position can decrease the disease impact on their daily lives. A psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the stage of change-readiness and treatment-eagerness scale

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 17 2009
Mei-Yu Yeh
Aims., The present study analysed the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the stage of change-readiness and treatment-eagerness scale among alcohol-dependent patients and investigated whether a three-factor structure fit the data. Background., The stage of change-readiness and treatment-eagerness scale is a 19-item instrument designed to measure alcohol-dependent patients' motivation for change. However, this instrument had not been translated and validated for use in Taiwan. Design., Survey. Methods., A sample of 161 alcohol-dependent patients receiving alcohol-related treatment in psychiatric hospital outpatient and inpatient units was included. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on three-factor measurement models of the stage of change-readiness and treatment-eagerness scale. Results., Confirmatory factor analyses supported the presence of a three-factor modified model (ambivalence, recognition and taking steps) among alcohol-dependent patients. Higher internal item consistency was found for the recognition and taking step factors, while the ambivalence factor was shown to have lower internal consistency. Convergent, discriminant and concurrent validity were obtained for the assessment of severity of alcohol dependence. Conclusions., The results indicated that the 11-item, three-factor modified Chinese version of the stage of change readiness and treatment eagerness scale provided best goodness of fit for the data in this study. This study demonstrated that the Chinese version of the stage of change readiness and treatment eagerness scale is a reliable and valid self-report measure for the assessment of changing motivation in alcohol-dependent patients. Relevance to clinical practice., The Chinese version of stage of change readiness and treatment eagerness scale is applicable for use in clinical treatment and research, predicting motivation for change and evaluating intervention outcomes in Taiwan. A psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the Cardiovascular Limitations and Symptoms Profile in patients with coronary heart disease

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 17 2008
Violeta Lopez
Aims and objectives., The aim of this study was to translate from English and evaluate the validity, reliability and cultural relevance of the Cardiovascular Limitations and Symptoms Profile (CLASP) as a health-related quality-of-life (HRQL) measure in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease. Background., Improvement in HRQL is increasingly used as a primary outcome in determining the treatment benefit using a generic instrument. However, disease-specific instruments are being cited as more responsive and sensitive in detecting even the smallest changes in health status. Therefore, valid and reliable disease-specific measures for patients with coronary heart disease are now being developed and evaluated. Design., Questionnaire design. Methods., The translation equivalence and content validity of the Chinese version of CLASP were evaluated by an expert panel. Measurement performance was tested on a convenience sample of 369 Chinese coronary heart disease patients. Results., The instrument demonstrated good content validity (content validity index 0·94), acceptable internal consistency (>0·70), except for two subscales of angina and tiredness and significant positive correlations among the subscales of CLASP, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale and the Short Form 36 Health Survey. Principal components analysis revealed nine factors that together explained 69% of the variance. Conclusions., The results of this study support that CLASP is a valid and reliable disease-specific health status measure for Chinese patients with coronary heart disease. However, further item modifications and testings are needed when considering the cross-cultural context. Relevance to clinical practice., The use of disease-specific HRQL measures could effectively evaluate nursing interventions in clinical practice. Further validations of CLASP among different diagnostic groups, such as patients with heart failure and those who have survived an acute myocardial infarction, would provide further empirical support for its use with all patients with heart disorders. Validation of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 12 2006
Linda YK Lee MNurs
Aim., To assess the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument. Background., Resident's satisfaction has been regarded by the literature as a gold standard for quality of nursing home care. Accurate assessment of resident's satisfaction can provide valuable information for implementation of quality nursing home care. However, there is not a validated Chinese tool to serve the purpose. Design., A cross-sectional descriptive survey design. Methods., Content validity of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument was assessed by the use of expert panel. Construct validity of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument was determined by assessing the correlation between satisfaction with other theoretically related constructs. Internal consistency and stability of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument were determined by Cronbach's method and two-week test, retest reliability. The six-factor structure of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis. Testing was performed on a cluster sample of 330 residents from 16 nursing homes in Hong Kong. Results., The Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument demonstrated good content validity by having content validity index of 0·93. High construct validity of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument was supported by its significant correlation with depression (r = ,0·42, P = 0·000), health-related quality of life (physical component) (r = 0·16, P = 0·042), health-related quality of life (mental component) (r = 0·41, P = 0·000) and global quality of care (r = 0·49, P = 0·000). The Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency and good stability by having Cronbach's alpha of 0·79 and intra-class correlation coefficient of 0·94, respectively. The six-factor structure of the Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument was not fully supported by confirmatory factor analysis. Conclusions., The Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument is a useful instrument for assessing satisfaction of cognitively intact Chinese nursing home residents. Findings provided initial evidence on its validity and reliability. Further empirical testing is recommended to explore its factor structure. Relevance to clinical practice., The Chinese version of the Satisfaction with the Nursing Home Instrument can provide guidance to enhance delivery of high-quality nursing home care for the Chinese population. Validation of the Chinese version of the MacNew Heart Disease Health-related Quality of Life questionnaire

JOURNAL OF EVALUATION IN CLINICAL PRACTICE, Issue 2 2008
Doris S. F. Yu RN PhD
Abstract Rationale, Patient-reported outcomes such as health-related quality of life (HRQL) describe or characterize what patients have experienced as a result of their health care. However, treatment outcome comparisons among different pure or mixed populations of patients with myocardial infarction, angina or heart failure cannot be made using existing coronary heart disease (CHD)-specific HRQL instruments. Aims and objectives, The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the MacNew in a cohort of Hong Kong patients diagnosed with CHD. Methods, Chinese translations of a CHD-specific HRQL instrument, the MacNew Heart Disease HRQL questionnaire (MacNew), the Short-form 36 Health Survey and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were administered to 365 Chinese-speaking patients with CHD at baseline and again 3 months later (n = 363). The Medical Outcomes Trust Scientific Advisory Committee criteria were used to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese MacNew Heart Disease HRQL questionnaire. Results, The results warrant recommending the use of the MacNew as an outcome measure to enhance treatment evaluation in Chinese patients with CHD and a diagnosis of myocardial infarction, angina or heart failure, substantiating previous psychometric data on the MacNew in a number of different studies in patients speaking seven different languages. Conclusion, The MacNew questionnaire may have value as a core CHD questionnaire for treatment outcome comparisons among pure or mixed populations of patients with myocardial infarction, angina or heart failure. Glutamate Decarboxylase Genes and Alcoholism in Han Taiwanese Men

ALCOHOLISM, Issue 11 2006
El-Wui Loh
Objective: Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of , -aminobutyric acid (GABA), may be involved in the development of alcoholism. This study examined the possible roles of the genes that code for 2 forms of GAD (GAD1 and GAD2) in the development of alcoholism. Method: An association study was conducted among 140 male alcoholic subjects meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for alcohol dependence and 146 controls recruited from the Han Taiwanese in community and clinical settings. Psychiatric assessment of drinking conditions was conducted using a Chinese version of the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry. The SHEsis and Haploview programs were used in statistical analyses. Results: Nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at the GAD1 gene were valid for further statistics. Between alcoholic subjects and controls, significant differences were found in genotype distributions of SNP1 (p=0.000), SNP2 (p=0.015), SNP4 (p=0.015), SNP5 (p=0.031), SNP6 (p=0.012), and SNP8 (p=0.004) and in allele distributions of SNP1 (p=0.001), SNP2 (p=0.009), and SNP8 (p=0.009). Permutation tests of SNP1, SNP2, and SNP8 demonstrated significant differences in allele frequencies but not in 2 major haplotype blocks. Three valid SNPs at the GAD2 gene demonstrated no associations with alcoholism. Further permutation tests in the only 1 haplotype block or individual SNPs demonstrated no significant differences. Conclusions: This is the first report indicating a possible significant role of the GAD1 gene in the development of alcohol dependence and/or the course of alcohol withdrawal and outcome of alcoholism. Summary Background :,The detailed population-based data on irritable bowel syndrome in South China are lacking. Aims :,To assess the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in South China and its impact on health-related quality of life. Subjects and methods :,A face-to-face interview was carried out in South China to assess the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome. Random clustered sampling of permanent inhabitants aged 18,80 years was carried out under stratification of urban and suburban areas. The impact of irritable bowel syndrome on health-related quality of life was evaluated using the Chinese version of SF-36. Results :,A total of 4178 subjects (1907 male and 2271 female) were interviewed. The adjusted prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in South China is 11.50% according to the Manning criteria and 5.67% according to the Rome II criteria. Factors including history of analgesic use such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (odds ratio 3.83), history of food allergies (odds ratio 2.68), psychological distress (odds ratio 2.18), life events (odds ratio 1.89), history of dysentery (odds ratio 1.63) and negative coping style (odds ratio 1.28) were significantly associated with the presence of irritable bowel syndrome (P < 0.05). Irritable bowel syndrome was significantly associated with a decrement in health-related quality of life score. Conclusion :,Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder in South China and has a negative impact on health-related quality of life. [source]

Translation and validation of the standard Chinese version of PDQ-39: A quality-of-life measure for patients with Parkinson's disease

MOVEMENT DISORDERS, Issue 5 2002
Kin-Lun Tsang MBBS
Abstract PDQ-39 has been widely used in the research and clinical management of Parkinson's disease. It has been translated into and validated in various non-English languages. We report here on the validity and reliability results for the translated standard Chinese PDQ-39 questionnaire. Fifty-four patients were recruited from a movement disorder clinic and two regional patient groups, and data were collected by direct interview. Nineteen patients had the tests repeated 4 weeks later to assess the test, retest and interrater reliability. The standard Chinese version of PDQ-39 demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's , = 0.54,0.90) and was comparable to versions in other languages. Further analysis showed good construct validity and test, retest reliability. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed. © 2002 Movement Disorder Society [source]

The development of the School Function Assessment , Chinese version for cross-cultural use in Taiwan

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERNATIONAL, Issue 1 2004
Jeng-Liang Hwang
Abstract The primary purpose of this research project was to translate and adapt the School Function Assessment (SFA), a standardized criterion-referenced instrument that measures school-related functional skills, for its cross-cultural use in Taiwan. The project consisted of four study phases: translation, cultural adaptation, pilot testing, and field testing for standardization. A series of rigorous procedures including the method of translation and back-translation, team consensus for cultural adaptation, and Rasch modelling techniques were used to address various dimensions of cross-cultural equivalence and psychometric properties of the translated SFA. The protocols that were developed as well as technical issues that were addressed in this project provide useful guidelines for international occupational therapists who are interested in translating and adapting instruments for cross-cultural use. Evaluating motivational deficits in individuals with mental illness: the Chinese General Causality Orientations Scale

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERNATIONAL, Issue 1 2000
Chin-Yu Wu
Abstract The study examined the adequacy of the Chinese version of the General Causality Orientations Scale in measuring motivational deficits among clients with mental illness. The scale was part of a motivational frame of reference designed to evaluate and resolve motivational deficits. The study was carried out in Taiwan, and data were collected at multiple psychiatric facilities. Based on a sample of 353 participants, the translated version was found to be internally consistent and valid. To make the scale more suitable for clinical use, a mixed category was added to the three previously suggested typological categories. It is concluded that the scale can be used in this patient population. Further research is needed to investigate temporal stability and other validity traits of the scale. Deterioration of intelligence in methamphetamine-induced psychosis: Comparison with alcohol dependence on WAIS-III

PSYCHIATRY AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCES, Issue 1 2010
Shih-Ku Lin md
Aims:, Long-term use of methamphetamine could induce psychosis, but consequences with regards to intelligence have seldom been investigated. Long-term use of alcohol could also result in intellectual deterioration. Methods:, The IQ of 34 methamphetamine-induced psychosis (MIP) patients (age, 28.7 ± 6.1 years) and 34 alcohol-dependent (AD) patients (age, 40.7 ± 7.3 years) was compared using the Chinese version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale,Third Edition (WAIS-III). Results:, The average full-scale IQ, verbal IQ, performance IQ, verbal comprehension index, working memory index, perceptual organization index, and processing speed index was 82.3 ± 10.8, 84.3 ± 11.9, 81.9 ± 12.1, 85.5 ± 11.9, 84.7 ± 12.5, 85.4 ± 13.6, and 78.5 ± 12.7 in MIP patients and 90.5 ± 12.0, 95.2 ± 11.3, 86.0 ± 13.7, 95.5 ± 11.0, 87.1 ± 14.5, 96.2 ± 13.1, and 84.5 ± 15.0 in AD patients, respectively. There were six MIP patients (17.6%) whose full-scale IQ was <70 and 13 (38.2%) whose full-scale IQ was <85 and >70, while one AD patient had a full-scale IQ <70 (2.9%) and 10 (22%) had full-scale IQ <85 and >70. Conclusions:, Long-term use of methamphetamine can result not only in psychosis, but also in mentality deterioration. Intelligence deterioration is more severe in clinical MIP patients than AD patients. Assessment of the mentality of MIP patients is suggested to help with the implementation of rehabilitative programs for these patients. [source]

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MINI-MAC) scale

PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY, Issue 6 2003
Samuel M.Y. Ho
The psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale (Mini-MAC) were examined among 115 Chinese cancer patients in Hong Kong. The five subscales from the original Mini-MAC (Anxious Preoccupation, Helpless,Hopeless, Fighting Spirit, Fatalism, Cognitive Avoidance) had acceptable internal reliabilities (Cronbach's , ranged from 0.65 to 0.88) and construct validities in our sample. Factor analysis suggested three factors: (1) Negative Emotion (,=0.91) contained items of the Anxious Preoccupation and the Helpless,Hopeless subscales of the original Mini-MAC, (2) Positive Attitude (,=0.77) combined the Fighting Spirit and the Fatalism subscales of the original version, and (3) Cognitive Avoidance (,=0.65) which was identical to the Cognitive Avoidance subscale of the original Mini-MAC. Construct validities of the novel factors were shown by their correlations with HADS Anxiety and Depression scores in the predicted directions. It was concluded that both the 5-factor model from the original Mini-MAC and the 3-factor model from the present study were valid in Hong Kong Chinese cancer patients. The results were discussed in terms of the meaning of the original Mini-MAC factors and cultural differences in coping functions between Chinese and UK cancer patients. Translation and Testing of the Cardiac Diet Self-Efficacy Scale for Use With Taiwanese Older Adults

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING, Issue 5 2009
Su-Hui Chen
ABSTRACT Objectives: The purposes of this investigation were to translate the Cardiac Diet Self-Efficacy (CDSE) scale from English to Mandarin Chinese and to test the validity, reliability, and feasibility of the translated scale in a sample of Taiwanese older adults. Design and Sample: This study used a methodological design to translate the CDSE based on the Brislin's model: (1) translation from source language (SL) of English to the target language (TL) of Chinese, (2) evaluation of Chinese version, (3) blind back translation from Chinese to English, (4) comparison of original and back-translated English versions, and (5) evaluation of the translated scale by a committee of bilingual Taiwanese experts. The translated CDSE scale was tested with 156 community-dwelling Taiwanese older adults, and any problems occurring during the administration of the scale were documented. Results and Conclusions: The validity and reliability of the Chinese version of CDSE scale were acceptable. However, the validity of items may have been impacted by differences in culture, language, and educational levels between English-speaking and Chinese-speaking populations. These findings suggest the need for further methodological study to evaluate and refine translation tools to resolve differences in culture, language, and educational levels between SL and TL. Understanding Israelite Religion: New Challenges for Chinese Bible Translations

RELIGION COMPASS (ELECTRONIC), Issue 1 2007
Yiyi Chen
With improvements in archaeological methodology, new discoveries in Syria-Palestine, as well as tremendous progress of knowledge about the Ancient Near East in the past several decades, we have never understood Israelite religion as reflected in the geographical and chronological scope of the Hebrew Bible better than now. However, today the most widely distributed and utilized Chinese translation of the Bible is the Union version, which was produced more than 100 years ago. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the preparation of an improved translation of the Bible based on our better understanding of Israelite religion is brought to the agenda. However, in order not to produce yet another paraphrased Chinese version of one or a combination of several existing English versions that most probably would not outlast the one-hundred-year-old Union version, a group effort of seminary-trained theologians, scholars in the Ancient Near East fields, as well as different sectarians among Christians, is called for. Never before in the history of China is this country more ready than today to execute such a plan, and the general public to embrace a translation reflecting Israelite religion as recorded in the Bible. Cross-cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Chinese Voice Handicap Index-10

THE LARYNGOSCOPE, Issue 7 2006
Paul K. Y. Lam FRCSEd
Abstract Objectives/Hypothesis: Recent developments in voice assessment propose the use of quality of life measurements. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) is one of the most psychometrically robust and well-studied instruments among the various instruments for measuring quality of life. Two versions of VHI (VHI-30 and VHI-10) have been shown to be valid instruments for distinguishing dysphonic from nondysphonic individuals and also for documenting treatment effect for dysphonic patients. The VHI has been used worldwide; however, the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of VHI remains untested. This study aimed to investigate such properties of the Chinese VHI-30 and VHI-10 in the Hong Kong Chinese population. Study Design: Psychometric analysis of the Chinese VHI-30 and VHI-10 in dysphonic patients and control subjects. Methods: The original VHI-30 was translated into Chinese and was completed by 131 dysphonic patients and 54 nondysphonic individuals. The dysphonic patients also self-rated their dysphonic severity. Results: Results showed high test-retest reliability and high item-total correlation for both Chinese VHI-30 and VHI-10. Both Chinese versions could be used to distinguish different dysphonic groups and between dysphonic and nondysphonic groups. Significant correlation was found between the VHI scores and the patients' self-rated dysphonic severity. Conclusion: The present study supported the original three-factorial structures of the VHI-30 and the use of the VHI for the Chinese population. It is shown that the Chinese VHI-10 is a strong representation of VHI-30 and is recommended for use in clinics because of its validity and ease of use by patients. [source]

Preliminary validation of a Chinese version of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2

ASIAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 1 2009
Jonathan P. Maxwell
The increased globalization of psychology and related fields necessitates the availability of psychometric instruments in a number of languages, countries and cultures. Unfortunately, research on anger and aggression in Chinese populations has suffered from a lack of valid and reliable measurement instruments. Therefore, the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2) was translated into Chinese (Chinese STAXI-2). Two samples of Hong Kong Chinese (N = 489 and N = 775) completed the Chinese STAXI-2. Participants in the second sample also completed measures of anger rumination and aggression. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of responses from the first sample resulted in the loss of nine items from the 57 original items due to misspecification. A second CFA, using responses from the second sample, supported the construct validity of the modified scale. Moderate correlations were observed with measures of aggression and anger rumination, and significant differences were found between males and females on three anger expression subscales (Anger Expression-In, Anger Control-Out, and Anger Control-In). The preliminary evidence suggests that the abbreviated inventory may be a useful measure of state and trait anger, and anger expression in some Chinese populations. [source]

Efficacy of aromatherapy (Lavandula angustifolia) as an intervention for agitated behaviours in Chinese older persons with dementia: a cross-over randomized trial

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY, Issue 5 2007
Pamela Wan-ki Lin
Abstract Background Agitated behaviours among persons with dementia are distressing to both patients and their caregivers. As pharmacological interventions may be limited by their potentially adverse effects, the use of complementary therapies for treatment of agitation has become more popular and aromatherapy is the fastest growing one. Objectives This study investigates the effectiveness of lavandula angustifolia (lavender) in treating agitated behaviours of demented people in Hong Kong. Methods It was a cross-over randomized trial. Seventy Chinese older adults with dementia were recruited; half were randomly assigned to the active group (lavender inhalation) for three weeks and then switched to control group (sunflower inhalation) for another three weeks; the other half did the opposite. Clinical response was evaluated using the Chinese versions of Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CCMAI) and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (CNPI). Results The mean CCMAI total scores decreased from 24.68 to 17.77(t,=,10.79, df,=,69, p,<,0.001). The CNPI scores changed from 63.17 (SD,=,17.81) to 58.77 (SD,=,16.74) (t,=,14.59, df,=,69, p,<,0.001) after receiving Treatment A (Lavandula Angustifolia). There were no period and sequential effects noted. Conclusion In summary, lavender is effective as an adjunctive therapy in alleviating agitated behaviours in Chinese patients with dementia. In a patient population particularly vulnerable to side effects of psychotropic medications, aromatherapy using lavender may offer an alternative option. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Relationship Between Work Performance and Personality Traits in Hong Kong Organizational Settings

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SELECTION AND ASSESSMENT, Issue 1 2006
Graham P. Tyler
Four hundred and thirty-seven employees from four Hong Kong organizations completed the Traditional Chinese versions of the Fifteen Factor Personality Questionnaire Plus (15FQ+) and the Cross-Cultural Personality Assessment Inventory (CPAI-2) (indigenous scales) and provided objective and memory-based recent performance appraisal scores. A number of significant bivariate correlations were found between personality and performance scores. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that a number of the scales from the 15FQ+ contributed to significantly predicting four of the performance competency dimensions, but that the CPAI-2 indigenous scales contributed no incremental validity in performance prediction over and above the 15FQ+. Results are discussed in the light of previous research and a call made for continued research to further develop and increase the reliability of the Chinese instruments used in the study and to enable generalization of the findings with confidence. Risky Business in China

JOURNAL OF CORPORATE ACCOUNTING & FINANCE, Issue 2 2008
J. Ralph Byington
Want to do an M&A deal in China? Be very careful! Remember that corruption and white-collar crime (WCC) is not confined to the United States. It is an epidemic that has infected business abroad as well. And while the penalties for WCC in the United States are tame, in China the punishment can be death. The authors review WCC in China, including who is doing it, what the penalties are, and protective measures executives can take to avoid and prevent encounters with the Chinese versions of WCC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
