Selected AbstractsThe New Cathedral of Oakland, CaliforniaNEW BLACKFRIARS, Issue 1034 2010How Does It Pray? Abstract After an earthquake destroyed the Cathedral of Oakland, California (pop. 450,000) in 1989, it was decided to erect a new one on a different site. After much planning a new, quite striking building was constructed, but one that was to be the centre of a complex of building hosting other church ministries. The building and plan has been much admired by architects, liturgists and theologians. This short article explores how well this building complex will help parishioners to pray and serve needs of the local church. Potts The well-known snake burials from the Late Dilmun building complex at Qalat al-Bahrain are discussed in the context of pre-Islamic Arabian, Mesopotamian, Elamite, Avestan, and Vedic Indian evidence. Ancient attitudes towards snakes are reviewed with the aim of confirming or eliminating one or more of these traditions as the likeliest cultural context for the snake sacrifices of Bahrain. The Swiss stadia of the European Championchip 2008 , aerodynamic investigations to assess windloads, user's comfort and microclimats. The european championchip 2008 will take place in Switzerland and Austria. The following contribution deals with the building aerodynamic investigations to the St. Jakob-Stadium in Basel and the Wankdorf-Stadium in Bern. Both stadia are characterized by their multiple functionality: in Basel the building complex integrates a residential accommodation for seniors, in Bern a shopping mall is arranged underneath the grandstands and the greatest photovoltaics of Switzerland is built in the roof structure. By means of wind tunnel investigations in both projects the decisive windloads for the tribunes and the facades are determined. The users' comfort and the necessary ventilation of the stadium is optimized by the design of the facades openings and the style of the roof. [source] |
